Summer Fun EVER SINCE I WAS A CHILD, JUNE HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE MONTH OF THE YEAR. Warm sunshine, pool days and backyard bbq’s give way to all the fun that is to be had. June is also similar to the first couple days of a week-long vacation. You can actually enjoy it, without the realization that it’s inevitably coming to an end. We are so fortunate to live in a state where summer activities are literally endless. These are the things our family is looking forward to the most this summer: TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL June 20-23 / Telluride, CO

PASTORA L HENRY DAVID THOREAU FAMOUSLY ASKED,
HOW RODWIN ARCHITECTURE CREATED A CONTEMPORARY MARVEL IN A NET-ZERO ENERGY BOULDER HOME
“WHAT’S THE USE OF A FINE HOUSE IF YOU HAVEN’T GOT A TOLERABLE PLANET TO PUT IT ON?” It’s a sentiment that Scott Rodwin, AIA, LEED AP, founder of Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Construction, took to heart when he began his firm 20 years ago. It’s a north star that guides his company’s mission, and the firm’s Seeblick project is its latest achievement in stunning sustainable home design. Perched on an active hayfield with sweeping

rural views in East Boulder County, Seeblick (which means “lake view” in German), embodies a passive solar ranch design, gathering the sun in the winter and screening it out in the summer. Surrounded by a pastoral panorama with a lake to the south, the 3 bedroom/3.5 bath home covers 3,400 square feet and was completed in 2018. The home is tucked discretely into a sloping south hill, subtly sculpting the land around it to maintain a modest profile on the front while opening up broadly to the view and the sun on the back. “Every project is unique. Every home is created just for its owner and just for its specific site. Our goal is to find the ideal marriage between the two,” says Brandon David, LEED AP, principal at Rodwin Architecture and co-owner of Skycastle Construction. Simplicity, modern design and sustainability were paramount to the homeowners for Seeblick. The home is Net-Zero Energy, meaning that it produces as much energy as it consumes over the year. This house is all-electric (there’s no gas connection), and utilizes passive solar design, a 10kW solar electric system and a ground source heat pump to achieve its energy performance. This emphasis on sustainability is a signature of Rodwin Architecture/Skycastle Construction, which is recognized as one of the Rocky Mountain region’s leaders in creating deep green custom homes.

The home is arranged into three sections (with the garage on one end, master suite on the other, and living spaces in the middle), with the center section spanned by a spacious outdoor deck. The bright, airy open living space is flooded with light spilling in through tall glass walls and clerestory windows from both sides of the home, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. The Many Sides of Jimmy Moore ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE PHOTOGRAPHY LADD FORDE
HOW ONE LOCAL BUSINESSMAN BRINGS PASSION AND A COMPETITIVE SPIRIT TO ALL HIS PROJECTS
CONSTRUCTION EXPERT. Avid scratch golfer. Outdoor enthusiast. Native Boulderite. However, if you know Jimmy Moore, founder of Boulder’s Petra Custom Builders, chances are his passion for building meaningful, collaborative relationships has shone through all of your interactions. From his childhood in Boulder County to his days as an NCAA Division I athlete and now as a successful local business owner, Jimmy’s multifaceted experiences and pursuits embody the open, sincere and fun-loving nature that is so characteristic of Boulder living. Jimmy grew up involved in a variety of sports and activities, developing a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a passion for exploring alongside his brother, Bill. An affinity for working with his hands likewise sprouted early on. “I was always interested in building things from a hobbyist level,” says Jimmy. “But my deeper interest in construction really was fueled starting in my early teenage years.” After working alongside his dad to build an 800 square foot addition onto his family’s home, Jimmy spent his teenage summers working as an apprentice for a local contractor. The role gave him a glimpse into all aspects of construction and, after college, Jimmy continued in the field working as a lead carpenter with a large commercial construction company. Specializing in building schools,

THE MANY SIDES OF JIMMY MOORE
(CON TI N UED)
Jimmy moved up the chain of command and became the youngest superintendent the company had ever known. After paying his dues working for a large operation, Jimmy decided it was time to branch out and create his own business, his way. “Starting Petra Custom Builders, I knew I wanted to build it on the relational aspect of the business, which was definitely a deviation from how it has been done in the past,” says Jimmy. “The construction industry has always been very transactional, and I feel like something is lost in that.” With a vision to revive the collaborative side of construction, Jimmy launched local designbuild firm Petra Custom Builders with the intent to provide incomparable service with a personal touch, focusing on building meaningful partnerships with clients. The company’s main business is working with local homeowners on their residential remodels, with Jimmy noting that, in Boulder County, there is much more freedom and flexibility for homeowners to create their dream homes by reworking their existing spaces versus starting from scratch. “We really enjoy seeing homeowners who’ve had challenges with their home’s functionality transform those spaces so they work ideally for the lives they live within them and serve as an inspirational space from which they can attack life,” says Jimmy. While Petra engages in projects from historical preservations to ground-up builds, Jimmy says it’s delivering homes that define their homeowners’ lifestyles that is the most rewarding. While the market for home remodels in Boulder County is ever-growing, Jimmy has remained steadfast in his commitment to keep his core business values of exceptional customer service and experience thriving. He has intentionally taken a slower approach to his business’s growth, letting it grow organically versus expanding for the sake of running congruent to the size of the market. Yet there is always room for internal growth and development in Jimmy’s view. Relentless forward momentum, a motto at Petra, is an idea that permeates the professional and personal lives of its whole team. At Petra, Jimmy notes that he’s most proud that the values of his “pack” include being part of a team that facilitates fulfillment for everyone involved in a project. It’s a culture that consists of treating the business as its own entity and in which no one, including Jimmy, feels that Petra is part of their identity. This allows everyone to be part of a company that serves both its clients and its employees. In his free time, Jimmy has also long had the drive to push himself to his limits in his athletic endeavors. A graduate of Lyons High School, Jimmy spent a large percentage of his time at school in the wrestling room working towards his goals and ultimately achieving them. Jimmy then attended the University of Wyoming on a wrestling scholarship but, after four surgeries in three years, decided to retire from the sport and walk onto the golf team instead. Having started golfing with his brother and dad at a young age, Jimmy finds enjoyment in being able to partake in an outdoor sport and sees golf as an outlet for his (admittedly perhaps overly) competitive nature. He can often be found on the greens and fairways at Fox Hill taking colleagues and business acquaintances out for a round to get away for a while. At the end of the day, whether it’s as a businessman, as a golfer, or in any of his other pursuits, it’s being part of and watching people succeed that’s most rewarding for Jimmy. And just as he encourages Petra’s clients to do through the company’s purposeful home design, Jimmy looks forward to continuing to “attack life” in all his many undertakings.

FOUR MEN ELEVATING THE BOULDER EXPERIENCE
THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THE CITY OF BOULDER THAT BRINGS A LITTLE EXTRA OUT OF PEOPLE. It’s weird, it’s innovative, it’s gorgeous and it’s defined by the many talented folks sprawled out across it. Be it adding technology to clients' homes, guiding a customer perusing a jewelry section, helping people achieve their dreams with a bank loan, or grabbing a bite with someone in a food truck park, these four men have consistently embodied the loving spirit of Boulder by striving to serve the people around them however they can. 62

Nothing But The Finest
When did you know you wanted to pursue different roles in different industries? I am inherently a better starter than a manager. I learned early on in my career that my skills are best used in the startup phase. I have been blessed to work at places that viewed me working in multiple fields as a benefit. How do your roles with Yard On Mass and The Well tie into your passions in life? I am passionate about bringing people together. A hospitable church community brings all different kinds of people together, and a great meal or great drink brings people together. I have never viewed myself as having multiple vocations. My job is to bring people together and help them experience joy.
Matt Patrick Founder of Yard On Mass food truck park and Lead Pastor of vision and teaching at The Well Church
What do you do to maintain a balanced life? How do you disconnect from work? I focus on managing my energy, not just my time. I try and do what I am best at when I am at my best. What’s the best life advice you’ve received? The only way people grow is through prayer or pain, and no one prays enough. What’s something you’ve learned recently that surprised you? Awesome usually lies on the other side of awful. I’ve learned to persevere through the difficulties because if I give up, then I’ll never see the awesome on the other side. It is not that difficulty in and of itself is good, but it can produce great outcomes.

What’s your day-to-day role like with Great Western Bank? I collaborate with great teammates on putting loan and banking products together for customers that best fit their needs. When and how did you begin working in the banking world? Was this a job you had your eye on for some time? I started as a teller at a small bank in Aspen, CO, in 1988. I had family and friends in the banking industry, and I saw how they enjoyed helping people achieve their dreams and wanted to be a part of that process. What do you do to maintain a balanced life? How do you disconnect from work? I don’t take work or worries home and enjoy as much time as I can with family and friends doing the activities I enjoy. What’s the best life advice you’ve received? Treat people how you like to be treated. What’s something you’ve learned recently that surprised you? Nothing surprises me around Boulder anymore!

When and how did you get into the home tech industry? I started in 1995. I was looking for a new job and met with a head hunter. They set up an interview with a company in the industry, and I thought it was pretty damn cool. I pursued the opportunity and excelled at it. I liked the technology but was always focused more on the design, and I found technology could be used to enhance the overall look and design of our clients’ homes. How does Aurum Home Tech tie into your passions in life? I’ve always been very focused on details and felt little things made a difference. From the way you treat people and interact with friends and family to the way you dress and present yourself. If you had to have a choose a different job in a different industry, what would you pick and why? I don’t know. I’ve been doing this for the past 25 years, and I am incredibly passionate about it. I never knew I would love it as much as I do. What do you do to maintain a balanced life? How do you disconnect from work? Mountain bike, ski, hike and spend time with my son, Ari, and fiancé, Joy. I love to cook and eat. I really enjoy traveling and recently got into scuba diving with Joy. That has been an incredible experience. I find I have a hard time fully disconnecting, but I am trying. Turning off the phone is an effort I have been making lately. What’s something you’ve learned recently that surprised you? The amount of pleasure that having a dog in our lives brings us. PLEASE SHARE THE BACKSTORY ON HOW NED CAME TO FRUITION? RET: When in 2015, my mom, Win, was diagnosed with cancer. I was scared and wanted to help as best I could. She received excellent treatment from her doctors, however, that included little in the way of nutrition and natural remedies. I decided I’d learn all I could, first about battling cancer through natural remedies and later about using them to truly thrive. CBD was one of the remedies that came highly recommended. I spent two years trying the various brands on the market. However, I didn’t develop an affinity toward any of them. There was no transparency around the products or the "why" of the business. I became interested in starting my own — one that would raise the bar concerning quality and transparency. I was extremely fortunate my business partner, Adriaan saw the vision as well. ADRIAAN: As Ret and his mom were beginning their journey towards her recovery back in 2015, I was 5,000 miles away, starting a big new job in the UK. While I should have been celebrating a defining moment of my career, I was privately battling severe stress, anxiety and questions about my existence. While I did my best to suppress those struggles, the avoidance finally erupted like a volcano, resulting in a full-blown panic attack in front of my new company and my exit. I was presented with the rare opportunity to take a step back. What I initially thought would be two months, turned into two years of traveling, writing, taking photos and exploring sustainability for my life, career and existence. Which I found in nature, simplicity and human connection. Upon my return and eventual move to Colorado, I got an excited call from my old friend Ret. He had just met an epic hemp farmer, found out where we could produce hemp oil, and thought we should start a CBD company together. After numerous discussions, we knew that this company would be way beyond a CBD company. It would be a wellness brand that would stand for reconnecting the world with nature. NATURE IS CLEARLY YOUR MUSE. HOW DO YOU HELP OTHERS RECONNECT WITH NATURE? RET: We do so in several ways. Nature is at the core of all we do. One way is through our Ned Walks, which bring people together to hike and 74
Boulder Lifestyle | June 2019
practice the art of nature bathing. Another way is through our products, the entirely natural ingredients they contain, and the transparency. Also, through our marketing and voice on social media, shedding light on ways in which people can bring nature back into their lives. Without that connection — or rather reconnection — it can be difficult for one to truly care about the planet. YOUR LATEST NEDVENTURE BROUGHT YOU TO ICELAND FOR A PIT STOP ON YOUR WAY TO THE NETHERLANDS FOR YOUR NEXT PRODUCT LINE. CAN YOU DROP A LITTLE INSIDER SECRET ON WHAT YOU’RE WORKING ON NEXT? RET: Sure. It was a blast! Travel and the act of seeking is a foundational part of Ned. The mission to the Netherlands was to visit a family business that extracts the world's purest magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral responsible for a host of biomechanical systems in the body. Because so much has been depleted from our soil due to overfarming, more than 70% of Americans are magnesium deficient. We’re working on a line of magnesium products that will help people become and experience the benefits of being magnesium-optimal. ADRIAAN: And it doesn’t stop there! We have plenty of new products on our radar and are actively plotting our next Nedventures (and pit stops) as we build what we’ve already created. YOU HAVE A VERY POSITIVE AURA ABOUT YOU? WHERE DOES THAT STEM FROM? RET: Thank you. Knowing you're on the right path and truly walking the walk will do that to a person. Also, I am one of the lucky ones who knows his purpose. Blessed as I am by this, I believe I have a responsibility to myself and others to pursue that purpose. The act of doing so has proven one of the most fulfilling ways of manifesting that positivity. IN OUR SOCIETY, WE ARE TAUGHT THAT WE NEED TO HAVE SUCCESS TO BE HAPPY. WHAT WISDOM WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE THAT IS LOST IN THEIR CAREER, FEELING VERY UNFULFILLED? RET: Focus on finding purpose. This might sound cliché, but the alignment and energy that can come from purpose are only topped by that of love.

ADRIAAN: I could go on for hours about this subject so I’ll try to keep it simple. What I can say to anyone lost in their careers is this …you can always make money, but you can never take back time. Respect the time you have, but know that there is enough time to honor yourself and if that means making a significant change, that's okay. It may feel like your peers will advance past you if you're not always "moving forward" (which can be unsettling), acknowledge that you can live many lives in your career, and careers in your life. Listen to what it is you truly want. Be patient. And follow that path. The universe has a way of aligning. WHAT DOES AN OPTIMAL HEALTHY DAY IN THE LIFE LOOK LIKE FOR YOU IN BOULDER, CO? RET: Rise with the sun and connect with nature, movement and proper nutrition. Meaningfully connect with family, friends, colleagues and customers. Focus on creating an alignment with purpose. Throughout the day, I try to take mini breaks to get outside, move and reconnect. One of my favorite practices is dipping my hands in Boulder Creek after lunch. The rivers and streams of the world are the chords that bind it together. In my mind's eye, I can transport myself to any other body of water in the world. ADRIAAN: What immediately comes to mind is a day that my partner, Brittany, had last weekend. We woke up to the sunrise painting the Continental Divide then had a nice slow morning with coffee on our deck. After taking in the mountains from a distance, we headed over to South Boulder and climbed Bear Peak via the Canyon route. We spent the hike just talking, then stopping and admiring the beautiful place we’re lucky to call home.

In 1989 when Harvey launched his firm, he was a modern-enthusiast, and at that time, it wasn’t all the rage. In fact, “I think architecture was lost during the 90s,” Harvey laughs. “It really was.” It was lost in a sea of what was trending at the time—McMansions, traditional homes.

HMH found a niche in modern. Then, about ten years ago “modern” became the poster child—in glossy magazines and firms who specialized in McMansions—now everyone wanted a piece of the pie. Today there’s more competition and business but, “In a way, it’s not as special as it used to be,” says Harvey. And that statement …that mentality is what makes Harvey and his team artists. Instead of focusing on growth and profit—they concentrate on architecture. 90

backstage with trout steak revival HOW TROUT STEAK REVIVAL IS KEEPING THE CATCH FRESH AFTER 10 YEARS
TROUT STEAK REVIVAL IS KNOWN FOR THEIR PROGRESSIVE, OUTSIDE THE BOX SOUND, INSPIRING LYRICS AND POSITIVE, UPBEAT DEMEANOR. It's no wonder this dynamic quintet has increasingly won the hearts of Colorado’s thriving bluegrass community. After winning Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s band competition in 2014, the group released their fourth album, Spirit to the Sea in 2017, and played 180 shows in the last two years. While being a successful band is one part of the story, tour
what’s strumming in their hearts as we begin 2019. After a long pause last winter, the band is firing up their brand new, currently unnamed red Sprinter van. Foltz laughed at the idea of naming it Adam La Van, a twist on the lead singer of Maroon 5, Adam Levine, though a fan's suggestion of Patty Ketchup was also a top pick (TSR’s last white van was Patty Mayonnaise). TBA. Foltz welcomed the time off from touring as a paternity leave for his newborn child. After the break, TSR starts this year with a drive for exploration and to release smaller albums more frequently to keep things fresh. Foltz shares, “at some point you have to come up with a successful model that keeps you going…get a pattern going that works for us”. Producing music is not cheap, and with two Kickstarter campaigns under their belt, they’re looking for new ways to be sustainable. When can fans expect new music from Trout Steak Revival? According to Foltz, late spring/summer they’ll likely start to release three-to-six song EPs. With consumers streaming various songs and bouncing around genres and playlists, the band sees the value of serving up digestible enjoyment instead of the usual full-length LP. The shift to bite-sized albums is also a sign of the times. As for recent accomplishments, the band is committed to rejuvenating their connection as bandmates and spent the new year clearing any outdated expectations or misunderstandings in their relationships. Foltz shared that they, “started to talk about all of the stuff, all of the barriers we put up, all the ways our communication has become less than fluid.” People change over time, including interests,

expectations and desires; this natural evolution certainly does not exempt musicians. It can be easy to gloss over the not so comfortable parts of being human, but it’s all part of the process when you’re spending countless hours on the road in close quarters and creating potentially vulnerable pieces of personalized self-expression. “Creativity is so trust-based and being in a band is a trust-based thing, we started to realize expectations equal trust, and we haven’t always been communicative about our expectations.” Foltz is “happy to report that I’m really excited about the band and that we’re in a new place with each other, on a creative level too.” Through thick and thin, Trout Steak Revival is here to stay. The band has hit the refresh button and fans will likely hear much of their realizations and reconciliations reflected in their upcoming new music and shows. A FEW OF THEIR FAVORITE THINGS … + VINYL RECORDS Call it nostalgic or traditional, Foltz is a big fan of listening to entire albums. + TRUE DETECTIVE & BOARDWALK EMPIRE No shame in HBO binges, these shows are a surprising source of inspiration for TSR. + HIS NEW LIFE As a new dad, Foltz expressed the beauty and simplicity of watching his baby experience life. He’s inspired to put words to this sense of awe he feels. + MAGNOLIA NORTH Foltz and his wife, Jen Middleton, spent time co-creating last year as a side project to mix up the routine and find new outlets for their expression together. + FESTIVAL CAMPFIRE JAMS It is common to see musicians riffing around a fire during festivals, learning new songs, and experimenting. An explosion of startup bands provides tons of opportunity to collaborate and ideate.
