The Fine Art of the Brentwood Lifestyle I

’ve never considered myself to be someone who truly appreciates art. At least not in the academic or historical sense. If you want to talk to me about classic works, great galleries or technical innovations, the conversation will be brief. But as we were producing this Arts & Entertainment issue of Brentwood Lifestyle, I began to realize what a significant role art has played in my life. I’ve been a writer throughout my career, have been trying to figure out how to play guitar since I was in middle school and haven’t given up on becoming a decent photographer. Throughout the years I’ve amassed what is, to me, a fairly substantial private collection. About two-dozen paintings hang on the walls inside my house, many more are in storage and I have more urns, bowls, vases and painted porcelain pieces than I can possibly count. While I can’t tell you much about the artists, I can tell you everything about what the pieces mean to me. For example, the picture that hangs above my office desk is not significant for its aesthetics, but for decades it hung in my late grandfather’s office. In this issue you will find some fascinating stories about how art has inspired so many different people from so many different walks of life, right here in Brentwood. Michael Phillips of Ansbach Artisans is a self-taught woodworker. For generations the Emamalie family has produced incredible custom pieces at Brentwood Jewelry. At Murff’s Craft Brews and Burgers, owner Woods Murphy displays a framed collection of brown-paper lunch bags that he carried to school – with colorful drawings by his famous cartoonist father. And few people anywhere have done more to make artists look their best than has Melissa Schleicher of Parlour3. These are the types of stories that we will try to present to you every month through the pages of Brentwood Lifestyle. We hope you enjoy them.

The city is soliciting the community for great photos that capture the essence of Brentwood. Images of sunsets, tree canopies, scenic vistas, historic stone walls, and anything that truly shows off Brentwood's character are of particular interest. The best submissions will appear not only on the website, but also in social media posts and print publications. Some photos will be selected for inclusion in the Citizen Update newsletter that is published every spring and fall. Information on how to upload pictures is available by visiting the city’s official website at Brentwood-TN.org.

ravel a few miles south on Wilson Pike and you’ll find an art gallery with a history that’s as quirky as the one-lane, beneath-therailroad-tracks, hairpin-turn you have to make to get there. You know you’re in for something special when you pull into the parking lot and see the original, 1970s-era gas pumps in front of the boxy old general store that’s now Ansbach Artisans. Once inside, the surprises continue. Instead of a dim and dusty 14

space, the room is open, bright and engaging. But you’ll note the contrast when owner Michael Phillips describes the building’s fascinating, if somewhat seedy past. “When it was built in the 1920s, this was the only place for miles where people could go to spend money,” he says. “The original building burned down and was rebuilt in 1956 and this is where we’re standing now. “There was a lady who baked biscuits for a group of men who were playing cards in the back. That eventually became breakfast and they opened to serve the public. Then they added lunch.

“So it’s been a diner and a gas station and a workshop. But I’ve heard stories from some of the neighbors so there’s really no telling what has happened here.” The building was last known as Jamison’s Market but it stood empty for about a year before Phillips bought it in February of last year. It needed upkeep, to say the least, and was completely gutted and renovated. That renovation resulted in a gallery that is fulfilling Phillips’ longstanding dream of providing an “artist friendly” environment. “I wanted more than a great contract for artists; I wanted a great gallery,” he says. “Everything in here is original. There are no reproductions and all the artists are from middle Tennessee.” The gallery takes its name from Ansbach, Germany, a town near the small village where Phillips and his wife, Regina, lived before moving to Tennessee with their four children in 2014. A self-taught woodworker, Phillips spent 20 years in the Army flying Huey and Black Hawk helicopters in Iraq, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. He began honing his craft after retiring in 2009 and focuses on creating functional furniture made from exotic hardwoods. When his house could no longer contain all the things he built, he decided to sell some pieces online. Within two hours he sold his first piece.

His personal workshop is in a room next to the gallery and it is there that he turns out desks, tables, chairs and unique wine racks that are converted from old upright pianos. “As we traveled, we’d always meet artists. In this gallery we try to promote that connection between artists and clients. There are so many great artists in this area so there is no need to go anywhere else.” Ansbach Artisans brings artists and prospective clients together on the final Saturday of each month with its ongoing Saturday Night Live Art program. The gallery bustles from 6 to 9 p.m. with featured artists painting, carving and creating as they interact with guests. Admission to the event is free and open to the public. “It started shortly after we opened last May because we are too far removed to be a part of the Franklin ArtScene,” says Phillips. “Artists enjoy it as much as, if not more than, the visitors. They’re able to collaborate. It’s a stimulating environment. They get instant feedback.” And they do so in one of the most unlikely of places. ith a growing roster of chain restaurants going up in Brentwood over the past few years, there has been a real hunger for new restaurants with more of a true local flavor. Murff’s Craft Brews & Burgers is helping to fill that unique niche with its own brand of friendly service, inventive burgers and craft brews. “Although it’s a little off the beaten path, once you find us, we believe you’ll be back,” said owner Woods Murphy. “Word of mouth has done very well for us.” Murff’s is located off Harpeth Drive, in the former location of Phillip’s Delicatessen. Murphy, who also owns Corner Pub in the Woods in Bellevue, saw the potential to expand Phillip’s brisk lunch business into dinner and craft beer. When you come to Murff’s, you’ll notice right away that burgers are the featured attraction. All of their burgers come in four sizes and are carefully ground by hand with fresh ribeye and ground chuck. Simply pick your meat, bun, cheese and favorite toppings. 16

Brentwood Lifestyle | March 2016

In addition to sliders, wraps and salads, the menu features unique appetizers like Redneck Calamari, Bill’s Dills and Boom Boom Buffalo Chips. Sandwiches are given a local twist with names like the Maryland Farm-Raised Fish Sandwich, Nash-Philly Steak, Franklin Road French Dip and Brentwood’s Best BLT. Capitalizing on the growing international renown of Nashville’s dining scene, Murff’s features its own version of “Nashville Hot Chicken." To help quench the growing thirst for local beer, the restaurant also features about 20 taps of brews from Nashville and the state of Tennessee. You can even fill up a growler of beer to take home to enjoy. As a lifelong resident of Middle Tennessee, Murphy’s roots run deep throughout the area. As a child, he attended local Scales Elementary and still maintains strong connections with friends in the Brentwood community. Naturally, he wants to run and own a successful restaurant, but his reasoning for opening Murff ’s is very special and personal to him.

“I opened the restaurant up to honor my Dad,” said Murphy. His father, Wayne Murphy, was a lifetime resident, real estate broker, Marine and cartoonist for The Tennessean. His artwork lovingly adorns the walls of the restaurant, along with a selection of his cherished golf clubs. One of the more unique pieces of framed art in Murff’s is a collection of school lunch bags, drawn and painted by Wayne for his son, Woods. Wayne is also known for creating Murff ’s Magic Mix Seasonings. The special mix has been a closely guarded secret for decades, known only to select family members. The seasoning serves as the foundation for the Murff ’s Craft Beers & Burgers’ signature flavor. “I still use it on everything I make both here and at home,” Murphy says. In March, Murff ’s will commemorate its one-year anniversary in Brentwood

with a special St. Patrick ’s Day celebration. They plan on starting a new local tradition with Irish food and Irishinspired specials. “We’re hoping it inspires more people to come on out and try to find us,” said Murphy. Possible future plans for Murff’s include a patio, a screened-in porch and an expanded menu featuring “meat-andthree” options. With its rich history, local beers and Nashville-centric dishes, Murff’s has all the ingredients of a a new Brentwood dining destination for both locals and visitors.

participants through downtown Franklin’s diverse historic buildings and celebrates Williamson County’s unique artistic talent. ArtScene includes dozens of galleries, studios and restaurants spread throughout an area of downtown Franklin flourishing with locations on the National Register of Historic Places. ArtScene celebrates Williamson County’s local craftsmanship, and provides both the novice and art connoisseur the opportunity to see art ranging from blown glass to turned wood and mixed media. To date, over 300 artists have participated in ArtScene and new artists are welcome to join each month. Gallery 202, a diverse art studio in historic downtown Franklin, has been the cornerstone of ArtScene for several years. Says Gallery 202 owner Kelly Harwood, “A few of the local artists and merchants wanted to bring more awareness to the art community and build a platform for artists to showcase their work, while also giving patrons a wonderful Friday evening out in downtown Franklin.” ArtScene administrator Linda Childs works diligently with the artists and galleries to ensure each event is enjoyed by all. “We are blessed with great sponsors and supporters who make ArtScene fabulous to attend,” says Childs. “We have a great team of volunteers who join us each month, working as trolley ambassadors and site visitors. We call them our ArtScene Aficionados.” Franklin’s Damico Frame & Art Gallery serves as Map Master for each event and a 20

Built in 1866, it represents a restrained version of the Italianate Revival style. The Mansion includes administrative offices, classrooms, the Robert N. Moore, Jr. Gallery, Café Eloise, the Entrepreneurship Center, and the McAfee Library and resource center. Located at 202 Second Avenue South, Clouston Hall was built as a "town home" for when the

newly formed ArtScene committee will work together with city and county organizations to promote art in Franklin. September 2016 will mark the fifth anniversary of the Franklin ArtScene and Childs says the celebration that month will comprise an entire week. Passports, glow sticks and chalk art are just a few of the fun things planned for that month’s ArtScene. Harwood sees the ArtScene growing in the coming years. “We are still going strong and as long as we keep supplying fresh art and patrons are attending and purchasing, the Franklin ArtScene will continue.” Childs agrees. “The Franklin ArtScene will evolve and progress, but the purpose will not change - which is to promote art in Franklin in a fun, casual way. ArtScene provides local artists an opportunity to display their work in a way that would not otherwise bring people to our beautiful, historic downtown.”

From 1964 until his death in 2001, the house was owned by Bunn Gray, a local artist whose works were purchased for private galleries owned by notables such as Elizabeth Taylor and Neil Simon. SS

o much has been written and sung about holding on to one’s dreams that stories tend to lose their meaning. But

there’s often a lot of truth in those whimsical words and lyrics. In Brentwood, Melissa Schleicher personifies that message.

The owner of Parlour3 salon and Barbour3 has fashioned herself as a stylist from the time she could hold a pair of scissors. “I’ve always wanted to do hair, ever since I was a little girl,” says Schleicher. “I cut the hair of every Barbie doll I had. I started cutting hair for kids in the neighborhood when I was 10 years old. Then my mom would get mannequins from a beauty school and I practiced on those.” By her own admission, Schleicher was not a stellar student at Nashville’s Overton High School. But it was not due to a lack of passion for knowledge or learning. Quite the opposite. Her childhood dream to make it big as a stylist never wavered and evolved to the point that she attended beauty school to become a hair and makeup artist. While her career path was unconventional, no one can argue with where it led. She’s had steady work for more than 20 years. Her salon and barbershop in the heart of Brentwood are destinations unto themselves. And she has developed a niche as hair and makeup stylist for some of Nashville’s most recognizable celebrities. While working as a salon assistant many years ago, she was asked to work with some musician clients. As she does with anyone and everyone, Schleicher became their friend, “and one thing led to another,” she says. Alan Jackson has been her client for 18 years. Lee Ann Womack followed shortly thereafter, as did Rascal Flatts and Jason Aldean. And more than a decade ago she connected with an up-and-coming artist named Carrie Underwood who was bound for international stardom. While most people would be content with that type of career and clientele, Schleicher never stops thinking ahead. “I’m a freelancer and work can be hit-or-miss,” she said recently while working on tour with Underwood. “You can

work every day for two months, then be off for a month. So my wheels are always turning.” That relentless motivation is how Parlour3 came to be. And when it was time for her dream to become reality, she turned to her Brentwood roots for a location. “Brentwood really didn’t have anything and I have a lot of clients who live between here and Franklin,” she says. “I knew hairstylists everywhere and knew that they were interested in my idea of a salon that is high-end and glamorous. Something that’s fresh and new.” When her realtor showed her vacant space in an old building on Franklin Road

Real Wives

WIFE, MOM, BAKER, PUBLIC SERVANT. THOSE ALL-ENCOMPASSING TITLES REPRESENT THE PILLARS OF JILL BURGIN’S LIFE. YOUR VICE MAYOR AND THE FIRST “REAL WIFE” OF BRENTWOOD LIFESTYLE.

BL: Who and what lives in your house?

JB: My husband Tim and I, plus our youngest son Owen, a sixth-grader at Brentwood Middle. Our two older sons, twins Henry and Mason, are college freshmen. We have a Mastiff named Lucy and a French bulldog named Piglet.

BL: Do you work outside the home?

JB: Yes. I serve as the Vice Mayor in the City of Brentwood.

BL: Where are you from?

JB: I was born and raised in Memphis, but moved here in 1991 when I married my husband, who grew up here.

BL: What’s on the floor of your car right now?

JB: An empty Powerade bottle from my son’s carpool to basketball practice.

BL: What is your guilty-food pleasure? JB: Reduced-fat Jif peanut butter.

BL: What is the title of the last book you read?

JB: I haven’t read any fiction in a long time. Last book I read was Visioneering by Andy Stanley.

BL: What is the best thing about living in Brentwood?

JB: The area’s natural beauty and the people. The residents truly care about their community.

BL: What shows do you DVR?

JB: Downton Abbey. Genealogy shows Finding Your Roots and Who Do You Think You Are? Keeping Up With the Kardashians (my guilty TV pleasure) and The Middle. 26

Brentwood Lifestyle | March 2016

BL: What is your favorite cocktail? JB: I only drink red wine.

BL: What is your favorite sports team? JB: University of Tennessee Volunteers

BL: Where did you attend college and did you earn a degree?

JB: I attended UTK for three years, then transferred to the University of Memphis, where I earned a B.A in journalism. I also have an M.Ed. from Vanderbilt.

BL: Tell us something about yourself that others may not know?

JB: The summer after my freshman year in college, I worked on the crew of my grandfather’s concrete crew, running errands to buy supplies and helping him build forms, scraping the chute during the pour and smoothing the concrete afterward as he built curbs and sidewalks for an office park in Germantown. There was a heat wave in Memphis that summer, but it was a great way to get to know my grandfather even better.

EMAMALIE FAMILY PROVIDING CUSTOM JEWELRY FOR MORE THAN HALF CENTURY ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOGRAPHY TINA GIONIS

A

t its core, Brentwood is a quintessential American hometown. It’s a place where generations of families have worked and played, graduated and married. That might explain how, even in a day of mass merchandising, a family-run jewelry store becomes an enduring and trusted source. For over 50 years, Brentwood Jewelry has been owned and operated by the Emamalie family. And with three generations of service under their belts, they’re proud to have remained true to their family values by providing rewarding experiences for their customers. Stop by on any given morning and it’s not unusual to see the owners, Salem and his son Brandon, holding court around the counters with customers and friends. “When you walk into Brentwood Jewelry we want it to be a fun and inviting experience, not intimidating or high-pressure,” says Brandon Emamalie. You will always see the same people and our priority is to always provide what the customer wants. “We strive each and every day to make sure we have the best quality and best reputation we can, all while adapting to fit the increasing needs of Middle Tennessee.” As a full-service jewelry store, Brentwood Jewelry offers unique, custom-designed pieces. In fact, it’s become somewhat of a calling card for a store that has operated in town for more than half a century. Emamalie says that customers ask frequently how the store comes up with their custom jewelry designs. “Truth be told, for the majority of our pieces we will make a rough sketch and then go back and complete it once we have all the details clear in our minds,” he says. He also notes that they can repurpose customers’ older and outdated jewelry. “Some people want to use all of the original material so the piece can stay as sentimental as possible, while others would rather trade and exchange their old jewelry for something new that will make them happy.” Brentwood Jewelry also offers a broad range of jewelry repair, with five craftsmen onsite to provide all types of jewelry and watch refurbishing. Emamalie says they also have an authorized CW21 watchmaker, which allows them to repair watches in any category and condition. It’s the kind of service that can continue to build trust for generations to come.

More information about the Emamalie family and Brentwood Jewelry is available online at BrentwoodJewelry.com. 30

Engine: 5.0-liter, 550-horsepower V-8 Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Four-wheel drive Wheelbase: 115 inches Curb weight: 5,148 pounds Base price: $112,345 As driven: $127,920 MPG rating: 14 in the city, 19 on the highway

eck-snapping acceleration and cackling exhaust pipes are the first signs that the Range Rover Sport SVR is a performance car dressed in SUV clothes. The snarling 550-horsepower V-8, borrowed from Jaguar F-Type, is capable of propelling this two-and-a-half-ton rig to 60 miles per hour is 4.5 seconds and has a top track speed of 162 mph. The eightspeed automatic is a perfect partner. Land Rover says the SVR completed a lap of the famous Nurburgring Nordschliefe racetrack in 8 minutes and 14 seconds, a time that is competitive with many sports cars. Large Brembo front brakes are installed to cope with the higher speeds. Fuel economy is rated at 14 miles per gallon in the city and 19 on the highway. The test vehicle, from Land Rover’s press fleet, was also equipped with lane departure warning, automatic parallel parking and 360-degree parking assist. The Range Rover’s interior is as plush as one would expect for a vehicle in this price segment. The two-tone sports seats have pronounced shoulder bolsters for support during high-speed driving. First-class materials are used throughout. Carbon fiber trim is used as a counterpoint to the leather and brushed aluminum. Knobs are used for the climate control, but navigation and audio are controlled by a less-than-intuitive touchscreen.

32

Brentwood Lifestyle | March 2016

The instrument cluster is a 12-inch Thin Film Transistor screen. The gauges are digital representations of analog gauges. The numbers on either side of the tachometer and speedometer needles grow slightly brighter as the needles sweep around each virtual dial. Upscale items included the heated windshield, Meridian audio system, adaptive cruise control, navigation and Bluetooth telephone connectivity. PRICE: The base price of the test vehicle was $112,345. Options included the SVR’s more powerful engine, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, metallic paint, ebony headliner, black roof, carbon fiber veneer, heated windshield and a carbon-fiber engine cover. The sticker price was $127,920. WARRANTY: Four years or 50,000 miles. POINT: The Range Rover Sport SVR has a whopping 550 horsepower and a 162-mph top track speed, yet it is capable of serious off-road activity because the air suspension increases ground clearance and the Terrain Response System has settings for nearly any condition. COUNTERPOINT: High-performance luxury SUVs seem like expensive toys.
