their child for the first time at the Nashville location of Gigi’s Playhouse in late March. Laughter and excitement were plentiful as the students and children hugged, played, and talked together. Each student also spent time with their child’s parents to get an idea of their child’s fashion preferences and unique needs in an outfit. The children were, of course, excited for the opportunity to dress up. But, the students were just as overjoyed to have a new and slightly unconventional design opportunity. Macy Harmon, a Fashion Design major in her junior year at O’More, was paired with Emmaline, an energetic young lady who loves to be the star of any room, and can’t wait to walk the runway. “Normally, we’re just designing something to fit a model form,” Harmon said, “but this particular piece will be just for Emmaline—it’s not made for anybody else.” Harmon plans to incorporate plenty of Emmaline’s favorite color—purple—into her custom outfit, along with “hopefully some wrinkle-free fabric” to withstand Emmaline’s playful, active demeanor. Parents are also grateful for the love and care being shown to their children by O’More and its students. TAKING THE GUESS WORK OUT OF PAINTING YOUR HOME EXPERT ADVICE FOR A WORRY-FREE HOME PAINTING EXPERIENCE.

COLOR SELECTION

Choosing paint colors for the home is not everyone’s forte. Prosise says people should choose colors they love for both interior and exterior because, typically, they will live with that exterior color for five-to-seven years, and interior colors for 10 years or more. It is important to consider colors that provide a natural flow throughout the interior of the home. In main living areas and hallways, homeowners are still gravitating toward neutrals such as gray and variations of gray. The trend is to brighten-up with bolder colors in bedrooms and other rooms. Sherwin Williams’ color of the year is Poised Taupe, which celebrates everything people love about cool gray as a neutral and also brings in the warmth of brown. PPG's (Porter Paint) color of the year is Violet Verbena, which is considered both nostalgic as well as modern. Tans and grays are still the most popular colors for exteriors. Variations of white, light greens and light blues are popular trim colors as they provide a classic, timeless and elegant look. The most popular color for front doors that are not natural stained wood is, by far, some

sort of red variation. It makes the door pop and provides a focal point. PAINT SELECTION

If you’re DIY-ing your next painting project, here are some things you should be aware of before applying the first coat of paint. First, paint technology has come a long way. In the past you could not put a water-based paint over an oil-based paint. Today there are hybrids

Second, there are many brands of paint with several different sheens. For interior walls, flat sheens will show fewer imperfections. Eggshell is easier to clean but it presents imperfections more easily. For exteriors, a stain sheen works best for siding, brick or trim. Don’t forget, preparation is the most important part of any painting project. No job will look as good as it could if it is not prepared properly. Poor prep, especially on the exterior, can cause the paint to fail prematurely. If you do not have a steady hand, invest in some painters tape for ceilings and other parts you do not wish to paint and make sure any furniture or valuables as well as the floor are covered by a quality drop cloth.

hen he went away to college, Howard Wiggins aspired to be a veterinarian. But it wasn’t long

before he called home to tell his parents he had a change of heart. “I told my parents I wanted to do design,” says Wiggins. “They said, ‘Well, O’More is down the street.’” And with that the lifelong Brentwood resident returned to Williamson County to enroll at Franklin’s O’More College of Design. That decision, in a very substantive way, continues to set the tone for his work as one of most acclaimed interior designers in the world. Wiggins trusts his own judgment and encourages clients to buy what they love without regard to what’s in vogue at the time. “Trends come and go; whatever’s in style is going out of style,” he says. “It’s a pendulum swing. Don’t make your house look like a time capsule. I’ve never seen so many mistakes as I see now.” He covers many of those mistakes in his book, What Were You Thinking? Recognizing costly mistakes that everyone makes. Some of the more common mistakes include beginning a project without a floor plan and buying furnishings in the incorrect order. “You have to know what you’re shopping for so it’s important to have a floor plan before you begin,” says Wiggins. “And you should buy the rug first, then upholstery followed by case goods.” He

From Abandoned Junkyard to

PREFERRED DESTINATION GRAYSTONE QUARRY'S SPECTACULAR TRANSFORMATION HAS TO BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED.

Y

ou know the old cliché: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. For Rick and Nancy McEachern,

a 76-acre property once filled with hundreds of tons of "trash," became their prize. But only after a transformational vision and lots of elbow grease. Graystone Quarry in Thompson's Station was once an abandoned rock quarry that was used to build I-65 from Nashville to Columbia. When the McEacherns purchased the property, the site had been used as a dump for 50 years. Now it's one of the area's most unique event venues. “It was abandoned with 900 tons of junk – wire and cement – in it from the highway project,” Nancy McEachern said. Construction crews used limestone from the quarry to build the highway stretch, and the McEacherns were determined to make the best of everything they left behind a half a century ago.

Over a period of more than two years, the couple recycled and repurposed wire, boulders, and other debris on site to create roads on the property, and eventually to build multiple event spaces. Nancy said, “We used it all, and very little ended up in a landfill.” The venue now boasts a 10,000 square foot Gathering Hall, adjacent to a waterfall, as well as the Hillside Pavilion—complete with three walls of slide-away glass doors for taking in the beautiful view. The spaces can each accommodate 300 people, and can be set up for weddings, corporate events, or private parties. The McEacherns wanted the venue to be “refined rustic,” so they brought in as many natural, locally sourced materials as possible. They used stone from the quarry, and any wood that wasn’t already on the property was grown and milled in nearby Leiper’s Fork. The venue officially opened with its first wedding in October, and it quickly became a popular choice for brides not just from Nashville but from Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey and as far away as California. Word spread quickly and by January 1, every Saturday in 2017 had been booked. “Now we’re booking Fridays and Sundays,” says Nancy. Before beginning this venture, the McEacherns worked for multiple startups and tech companies during the 20 years they lived in California. Nancy’s strength and experience is in event planning, and her vision for her own venue began when their son moved to Nashville in 2009 to attend Belmont University. The couple fell in love with Middle Tennessee, and knew they wanted to move here, eventually. They began looking for property that they could develop into an event space, and found the abandoned quarry while scanning Google Earth.

“Rick was looking every single night on listings,” Nancy said. “When we found the [quarry], we sent our realtor and son over. They liked it and we tried to get it but so were some others.” After the long process of acquiring the property, Rick and Nancy built their private residence on it. Similar to the event spaces, their 7,000 square foot home also makes use of as many natural elements from the property as possible. The McEacherns have no intention of slowing down, and the next planned project on the property is an amphitheater that will accommodate more than 5,000 seats. Nancy will continue to manage the wedding and events arm of the business, and Rick will be heavily involved in the amphitheater once it’s running. As their event calendar continues to fill, the couple’s dedication is making Graystone Quarry into an incredibly unique, world-class destination—right here in Middle Tennessee.
