Lifestyle Letter
Happy New Year BuckHaven I
’m not going to hammer you with New Year’s resolution guilt in this letter, or urge you to forgive and forget. I’m sure you’re getting that at every turn. Personally, I set my goals every summer when I head to the lake and review and reset with my friends while sailing and gazing out into the clear deep water. (Uh oh, I just realized I only have six more months to get my act together!)
This month, we bring you stories of local entrepreneurs working to make their dreams come true while honing ideas and products for the modern marketplace. I met Ruben Rodriguez at my Crossfit gym and we competed on a masters team (he’s a beast!) before I found out he runs a Buckhead company that makes tens of thousands of tortillas every day from scratch, supplying some of our favorite restaurants with chips, and corn and flour tortillas. His parents started the business more than 35 years ago and he works at Los Amigos Tortillas every day to keep the family dream alive. You’ll also meet two entrepreneurial power houses from Garden Hills (on the cover) who brainstormed over pizza and wine while their children played in the next room and developed an award-winning high tech fabric, launching a gorgeous line of ready-to-wear apparel at Neiman Marcus. The Brrr! brand, based in Buckhead, hits QVC in fashion-forward Italy in June. There are big ideas all around us. What’s yours? We hope this issue inspires you to listen to your creative voice in 2016.

Since 1969, over 10 million students across the nation have taken part in this popular PTA program and SRS is once again proud to be a participant. In previous years, multiple students have been state winners and last year an entry in the Literature division moved on to the National competition. This year students submitted 226 entries in five categories (visual arts, literature, photography, film production and dance choreography) based on the theme "Let Your Imagination Fly."

onsider the tortilla chip. After all, most of us don’t — we just assume they’ll arrive on our table, basket after basket. The ubiquity of the tortilla almost makes it invisible, and most think of the filling of burritos, enchiladas, gorditas and the like as the star. But whether flour or corn, that tortilla’s got to come from somewhere. That somewhere is right here in Buckhead. Located in an Armour Drive industrial park just off I-85 that’s home also to SweetWater Brewing and Open Hand Atlanta, Los Amigos Tortilla Manufacturing, Inc. has been turning out top-quality tortillas for years. When it was founded in 1969, Los Amigos was one of the first tortilla manufacturing companies in the entire Southeast. Almost half a century on, there are now multiple CONTINUED > tortillerias based just in metro Atlanta. January 2016 | BuckHavenLifestyle.com

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2016
Look to the three flags on the packages of either Los Amigos’ corn or flour tortillas — a Mexican and a Guatemalan flag sit alongside the Stars & Stripes. The company was founded by the parents of Ruben Rodriguez, Jr., who currently runs the business. His father came from Mexico and his mother from Guatemala, and the company’s wholly American. The 38,000-square-foot facility can turn out 6,400 dozen tortillas per hour, around the clock. That’s literally millions of tortillas made within the space of a few days. The process is remarkably simple, relying on traditional processes Rodriguez’s parents established at the company’s beginnings. Whole-kernel Kentucky corn is steam-cooked and soaked, then ground into masa dough with water and lime (food-grade calcium hydroxide, not the citrus fruit). The factory’s grinding mechanisms are made from volcanic stone that pulverize the cooked corn, handling up to 1,000 lbs of corn per hour. Los Amigos, which engages with the community by offering school tours, among other initiatives, splits its facility into flour and corn production. The softer, puffier flour tortillas are proofed, pressed and baked on one side while the corn tortillas — a naturally gluten-free product — are created on the other, then either bagged whole or cut into quarters for use as tortilla chips. Restaurants and retailers eager for these local products can get their hands on Los Amigos tortillas through food distributors like U.S. Food and Sysco, but they’re also available to Atlanta shoppers at the Acapulco Supermarket… or just sit down for a meal at spots like Bone Garden, No Más Cantina, Twisted Taco or El Taco Veloz, among others. Not only will you be dining on delicious Mexican food, you’ll also be tasting a part of Atlanta small-business history.

or more than five years, Mary-Cathryn Kolb kept a journal of good ideas, inspired inventions and business concepts. Two years ago,
she called a friend she formerly worked with at Spanx, Tosha Hays, and asked to meet for coffee. They bonded while brainstorming on a design for a bra for breast cancer patients. Then, Kolb shared the pages of that journal, running ideas by Hays who listened with interest, but not feeling the fire until Kolb described a high-tech fashion fabric that was cool to the touch. The Buckhead women and their husbands, met every Sunday for four months, honing the idea and developing a viable business plan while their five (now six) children played together. They unabashedly asked business savvy friends to listen to their pitch and contribute financial, marketing and manufacturing know-how to the plan. In November of 2014, they launched a fashion technology company, Brrr!TM and created a proprietary cool-touch fabric that is moisture wicking, offers SPF protection and is permanently cooling due to a compilation of all-natural ingredients. The fabric has a patent pending and the line got a thumbsup from the people at QVC here in the USA, and will be on air on QVC Italy in June. CONTINUED >

n recent years, the health food trend has reached a new level. Everyone wants products made locally, from natural ingredients, with easily identifiable contents. Jaime
Foster of Brookhaven, creator and owner of Georgia Grinders Premium Nut Butters, has carved herself a niche in this ever-increasing circle of healthy, natural food. What began as almond butter made from a family recipe has grown into a national brand with numerous nut butters on its menu. Foster, who has a background in medical sales, realized that the passion she originally felt for her career dissipated after having her second child. She and her husband had strived to live a healthy lifestyle and create recipes for their family that reflected that. So they took the leap, taking CONTINUED >

her grandfather’s almond butter recipe, crafting it into a larger scale format. Originally, NaturAlmond was sold only at farmer’s markets, where Foster could be face-to-face with consumers and receive feedback and ideas as to what would sell. Soon after, she added three additional flavors of almond butter to her offerings. In the fall of 2014, she rebranded her business to include different nuts and flavors, and in January of 2015 Georgia Grinders Peanut Butter was launched and Georgia Grinders Cashew Butter was added to the mix. NaturAlmond is almond butter made from Foster’s grandfather’s personal recipe and provides a lighter, milder flavor than traditional peanut butter. Flavors include honey roasted, maple caramel, salt free, and original. If peanut butter is what satisfies your craving, Georgia Grinders offers both creamy and crunchy. Lastly, cashew butter is available, as well, if you’re looking for a creamy, and flavorful alternative nut butter. All of Georgia Grinders nut butters are vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, and made with completely natural ingredients. In fact, Foster was adamant about staying local. “We take pride that we own and operate every facet of NaturAlmond and Georgia Grinders. We can guarantee quality because we produce, manufacture, and track every single jar of nut butter that goes out.” Product purity is guaranteed; in fact, most of her recipes are quite simple: nuts and sea salt, both of the highest quality Foster can find. Georgia Grinders is made and shipped from a facility in Chamblee; all butters are produced in small batches by machines owned by Georgia Grinders. Every single jar of nut butter can be tracked, anywhere in the world, a hands-on approach that is important to Foster. In fact, Georgia Grinders is the only handcrafted peanut butter in the state of Georgia. A resident of Brookhaven, Foster is an avid health enthusiast who carves time to in her busy schedule to exercise six days every week. In addition to her constant work raising funds for ALS, a disease her mother was diagnosed with four years ago, Foster has partnered with Dekalb County School’s Vocational Training Program for Students with intellectual disabilities, teaching students on the job skills for the past two years at Georgia Grinders. You can find the nut butters at Whole Foods, Sprouts, Westside Provisions, and The Fresh Market. Foster also stays true to her roots, working alongside her husband Harry, every week at local farmers markets including Peachtree Road Farmers Market, Marietta Square Farm-

Add the brown sugar and vanilla and combine. • Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. • Add the dry ingredients to the batter and stir together until well combined. Stir in the white chocolate. • Bake for 25 minutes or longer. Check for doneness with a toothpick but these are best just baked enough to still be gooey!

015 was a great year in the automotive industry with the debut of new models, high-
tech gadgetry, and more engine power, while answering the challenges of gas conservation and the demands for all-electric. KIA’s 2016 Optima SX LTD successfully proves that there still can be room for improvement on last year’s already sound four-door sedan with enhancements to the body and cabin, and refinement of numerous driver-friendly features. KIA’s extraordinary surge over the last decade has made them one of the top brands with no signs of regression; their 2016 KIA Optima SX LTD solidifies this position. Its sleek body is beautified with HID headlights boasting auto leveling and dynamic bending; a full panoramic sunroof to provide both the front and backseat passengers with optimal stargazing; 18-inch alloy wheels; and sport LED rear tail lights collectively spell “sexy” effortlessly. The interior is equally impressive. The cushy, quilted “Aubergine Nappa” leather seats are temperature controlled, and Harmon Kardon’s QLS premium surround sound system puts ears in bliss. Bluetooth wireless technology, Sirius XM capability (the first three months are free), dual-zone climate control, and electronic stability control leave the passengers with little to be desired. As for the driving experience, everyone will have to draw straws in order to get behind the wheel thanks to the extensive list of amenities such as the front collision warning system, rear parking assist, a brilliant eight-inch monitor with navigation, advanced smart cruise control, blind spot detection, and surround view monitor for full awareness of anything near. Activating the push-button start, the 2.0-liter turbo engine controlled by a six-speed automatic transmission is set to push out 245 horses, which is more than satisfactory for four cylinders and of equal importance, gas conservation at a combined 25 miles per gallon. Its value seals the deal at a generous $36,615 with all the fixings. Ultimately, 2016 is destined to be an even more impressive year drivers will be happy to embrace thanks largely to KIA. Once upon a time I thought every bookshelf should be lined with books and so I collected and I kept every book I finished.
