A local hospital has an interesting advertising campaign running these days that ends with a tagline: “breathe!” And it comes as timely advice well taken.
It’s been a year. And sometimes we — I! — need to take a moment. So much has been flying at and around us, from elections to wars to horrible hurricanes and the dogs at PACC that need a family.
All of those are important and urgent topics. But to “breathe”...is critical while we hopefully move forward into a safer and more united community.
Even the local pack of coyotes is yipping away under the night sky at the moment. Something is in the air. And we need to make adjustments.
To that end... we have some ideas about where to go, what to do, what to eat and drink, and where to shop. We hope these little lists make it a little easier to kick back and relax. So here’s to an easier afternoon out and about. Or an evening home enjoying great meals with those we love.

Recipes to Set That Holiday Tone
Festive Foothills Fun: here are some dandy drinks to experiment with. And enjoy. Holiday greetings to all!
(Note: All recipes can be made non-alcoholic by substituting spirits with alternatives like extra juice, soda, or non-alcoholic spirits.)
Winter White Chocolate Martini
A decadent dessert cocktail perfect for holiday parties.
ingredients:
• 2 oz vanilla vodka
• 2 oz white chocolate liqueur
• 1 oz white crème de cacao
• 1 oz heavy cream
• White chocolate shavings for garnish
• Sugar and crushed candy cane for rim
directions:
Step 1. Rim a martini glass with sugar and crushed candy cane mixture
Step 2. Combine all liquid ingredients in a shaker with ice
Step 3. Shake vigorously until well-chilled
Step 4.Strain into prepared glass
Step 5. Garnish with white chocolate shavings
Winter White Chocolate Martini
Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate
A boozy take on the winter favorite.
ingredients:
• 2 oz caramel vodka
• 6 oz hot chocolate
• 1 oz salted caramel sauce
• Whipped cream
• Chocolate shavings
• Caramel drizzle
directions:
Step 1. Rim a mug with caramel sauce and flaky salt
Step 2. Combine hot chocolate and vodka in the mug
Step 3. Stir in salted caramel sauce until fully incorporated
Step 4. Top with whipped cream
Step 5. Garnish with chocolate shavings and caramel drizzle

ingredients:
• 1 bottle prosecco or champagne
• 1 cup pomegranate juice
• ½ cup Cointreau
• ¼ cup fresh lime juice
• Pomegranate seeds (aka arils)
• Fresh mint leaves
• Orange slices
directions:
Step 1. In a large punch bowl, combine pomegranate juice, Cointreau, and lime juice
Step 2. Slowly add the champagne
Step 3. Float orange slices, pomegranate seeds, and mint leaves

• 4 oz prosecco
• 2 oz cranberry juice
• 1 oz Grand Marnier
• Fresh rosemary sprig

• Gold sugar for rim
directions:
Step 1. Rim champagne flute with gold sugar
Step 2. Pour cranberry juice and Grand Marnier into glass
Step 3. Top with chilled prosecco

Wine Sangria
A cool twist on traditional mulled wine.
ingredients:
• 1 bottle red wine
• 1 cup apple cider
• ¼ cup brandy
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 3 star anise pods
• 4 whole cloves
• 1 orange, sliced
• 1 apple, diced
• Fresh cranberries
directions:
Step 1. Combine wine, cider, and brandy in a large pitcher
Step 2. Add spices and fruit
Step 3. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight
Step 4. Serve over ice, garnished with extra fruit and a cinnamon stick

Maple Old Fashioned
A winter variation of the classic cocktail.
• 2 oz bourbon
• ¼ oz pure maple syrup
• 2 dashes orange bitters
• 2 dashes Angostura bitters
• Orange peel
• Cinnamon stick
directions:
Step 1. In a mixing glass, combine bourbon, maple syrup, and both bitters
Step 2. Add ice and stir for 30 seconds
Step 3. Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube
Step 4. Express orange peel oils over drink and garnish with peel and cinnamon stick

A magical winter version of the G&T.

• 2 oz gin
• 4 oz premium tonic water
• ½ oz elderflower liqueur

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

DIY WINTER CRAFTS

ORNAMENT CLUSTERS
SUPPLIES
• 22 gauge wire
• Ornaments of at least 3 varying shades and sizes
• Wire snips
STEP 1
Cut desired length of wire for a cluster, about 24”
STEP 2
Add an ornament about 4” from one end of the wire and twist the wire around the top of the ornament to provide a base for your cluster. Twist about 5 times. You should still have about 4” of wire at the end; you will need it to tie onto your garland, tree, or wreath.
STEP 3
Continue adding ornaments to the wire, alternating sizes and colors until you have 4-6” of wire remaining.
STEP 4
Twist the remaining wire around the top of your final ornament 5 times to secure all of your ornaments in place. Making sure to leave at least 4” of wire in place at the end in order to tie onto garland, tree, or wreath.
STEP 5
Use the ends of the wire to attach to your holiday item of choice!!
Pro tip: Keep your clusters to the 24” length to keep from getting too heavy and/or having ornaments pop off. Ornaments will pop off at times, but they will still look gorgeous and you can always glue the ornament back onto to the top. Simple, gorgeous, and impactful!
