It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

T

he holidays are upon us and that means more gatherings with family and friends, admiring glittering lights, enjoying decadent treats and decorating a beautifully adorned tree – all of which put me in the holiday spirit. Yet there is something else beyond all the hustle and bustle that give meaning to the season – the gift of giving. It’s become a tradition for my family to gather new and used toys for a local women’s shelter each year. A few days before Christmas we load up the kids and head into downtown Phoenix. On the ride there we talk about why it's important to give back and we remind our children about how fortunate we are for the simple things in life which are often taken for granted. The first year I thought our kids would have a hard time parting with their toys and understanding why something new wasn't theirs to keep. But they didn't. They began to search around their playroom, looking in their toy bins, bookshelves, and closets to find more items. At that moment I remember feeling overcome with emotion, mostly grateful and proud, that my children had understood the true meaning of giving. To this day we haven't been inside the shelter and we'll never have the opportunity to meet the deserving women and children who receive these gifts. It’s knowing that we might have made Christmas just a little brighter for those women struggling to make ends meet or trying to start a new life, and for the children who wouldn’t otherwise get to unwrap a special toy, that’s what I love the most. It’s what makes the season so special.

In this issue you’ll learn about the magic behind Zoppé Italian Circus. Your heart will ache for the surviving families of fallen officers who come together in the midst of tragedy. You’ll be inspired by the words of Steve Zabilski, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul, encouraging families to give back not only this holiday season but all year long. From all of us at Chandler Lifestyle, we want to wish you and your family a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season. Cheers! Meghann Finn Sepulveda by Community ™

Christian Brothers Automotive

Opens First Arizona Location UNIQUE REPAIR SHOP DEDICATED TO PROVIDING CUSTOMERS WITH INTEGRITY AND RESPECT ARTICLE AMY AGUIRRE | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

C

hristian Brothers Automotive is a rapidly growing franchise that originally began in Houston, Texas in 1982. The franchise now has over 145 different locations across the United States. Christian Brothers Automotive opened a new location in Chandler on August 24, 2015. Located at 290 E. Ocotillo Rd, the new Chandler location is the first Christian Brothers Automotive in the state of Arizona. A FAMILY BUSINESS

Tony Schottenbauer co-owns the new Chandler location with his wife Shoko Schottenbauer. After working in operations management and independent consulting, Schottenbauer realized he wanted to pursue a new career that would allow him to “walk his faith.” He was drawn to Christian Brothers Automotive because of its commitment to Biblical principles and veterans and because of his lifelong automotive hobby. Christian Brothers Automotive is different than many auto repair shops, and that difference is evident right when customers walk through the door. “The waiting room has wood floors, leather couches, crown molding and is a very upscale waiting and lounge area,” says Schottenbauer. Customers can wait for their car in the waiting room, or they can take advantage of the courtesy shuttle. Schottenbauer and his staff provide all major auto services and repairs and they invest in advanced technology in order to provide customers with the best service. Christian Brothers also has a staff of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified technicians. COMMITTED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE

Schottenbauer and his staff take a different approach to how they work with customers. Instead of telling the customer what is wrong with their car, they prefer to show the customer the problem. 14

Chandler Lifestyle | December 2015

Schottenbauer explained that they do not view their job as salespeople, but as educators. Christian Brothers Automotive offers a warranty called the “nice difference warranty.” According to Schottenbauer, the warranty is all about providing options for their customers. “Our warranty is two years or 24,000 miles, whatever works best for you,” he says. Depending on driving habits, the warranty can last until 24,000 miles or the end of the two years if that amount has not yet been reached. Christian Brothers Automotive is also strongly dedicated to the military; veterans receive discounts and Schottenbauer--who is a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam in 1972--aims to hire veterans. He currently has two veterans on his staff. Schottenbauer expressed that one of the reasons he wanted to own a Christian Brothers Automotive was to build relationships. “I would rather have 5,000 customers that love us and want to come back to us for their needs, year-over-year, and once their kids grow up, they come here, rather than have 100,000 customers that I only see one time,” he says. The Christian Brothers Automotive mission is to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Schottenbauer and his staff follow this motto by running the business with integrity, inspiring trust and treating people with courtesy and respect. “Part of our mission is to be a light in the community, in the state and in the world,” Schottenbauer adds. The franchise looks to make a positive impact on the city of Chandler, one customer at a time. To learn more call 480.264.0990 or visit CBac.com.

he owners of Crust are delighted to introduce their East Coast Italian cuisine to Chandler and at the same time preserve a bit of Chandler’s history. Michael Merendino, Ryan Mitchell and Duke Hornia opened the doors of their new restaurant this past August. They are elated about moving into a historic building, the impressive Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort. It’s taken months of hard work to convert the dirt basement that sits directly under their Crust Chandler restaurant into a late night lounge. Once a speakeasy during the prohibition, with a separate unmarked entrance from the street, has now been rebirthed as The Ostrich with food, specials and cocktail service. In keeping with the preservation of history, the owners salvaged wonderful keepsakes, a rustic wood bar and beautiful leather booths from the legendary Monti’s La Casa Vieja restaurant in Tempe, which closed last year after nearly 60 years. The Ostrich has a deep history; not only is it housed in Arizona’s first golf resort, but Dr. A.J. Chandler, who owned an ostrich farm, stored ostrich feathers there in hopes of them becoming a fashion trend back in the flapper dress era. Now you can enjoy this legendary ambiance for an evening or when holding your next special occasion there. CONTINUED >

“Downtown Chandler is vibrant and exciting and we are happy to be part of the community,” says Merendino. Not new to the restaurant scene, the owners successfully operate two other Crust locations in the Valley: two pizzerias, My Pie, and a catering business all serving delicious, homemade fare that converts locals into regulars. In fulfilling their vision of opening neighborhood restaurants, they continue to use only fresh, homemade ingredients and offer them at affordable prices.

BIG ON TASTE

Fri-Sat

Merendino is from Long Island, New York and grew up helping his father in their pizzeria using many of his grandfather’s recipes. An appealing menu starts with six appetizers that include fried calamari, a meat and cheese board and filet sliders. The bruschetta board offers many tempting choices. My favorites are the apple and fig, the cucumber and feta, the artichoke and mushroom and the Soppressata, which is served with a basil pesto. If you love pizza, you are in for a treat. Baked in a wood burning oven, you have a choice of thin crust, Sicilian style crust or the original Rustica individual pizza. The original recipe for Pizza Rustica came from Sicily where the town’s people would bake their bread in a community oven, leaving scraps of dough. The less fortunate would gather the dough and stretch it to make thin, odd shape pizzettes. They’d top the dough with sauce and whatever simple ingredients they had. Merendino’s grandfather brought this concept to America and it’s become a favorite among diners. Other Italian savory specialties include Shrimp Scampi, Chicken Francese, Chicken Parmigiana and Eggplant Parmigiana. The pasta dishes are so good you may have trouble picking one. My suggestion is to try a different one each time you visit until you’ve tasted them all and then decide which you enjoyed the most. I recommend you start with the Penne alla Vodka or the Rigatoni Pesto Shrimp. You’ll want to save room for dessert. Selections include delicious mini cannolis, tiramisu, New York cheesecake, a warm cookie ice cream sandwich and a strawberry mascarpone cake. There is also a nice selection of after dinner drinks.

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS

With a selection of eight wonderfully crafted cocktails, I know you’ll be tempted to try a few. The Aperol Spritz is the Italian happy hour favorite and includes liquors Lunetta Prosecco, Aperol and soda water. The Moscow Mule includes vodka, lime and Bundaberg ginger beer. There is also the Crust Manhattan and the Hemmingway Daiquiri, and a wide offering of wine and beer. Yes, the Crust team is happy to be a part of the downtown Chandler community. “We’re here to stay. We love what we do and enjoy serving our East Coast Italian food,” Merendino says. 20

AT ZOPPÉ ITALIAN CIRCUS Entertainment for audiences of all ages ARTICLE JACKIE BINSFELD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

n today’s world, we find ourselves absorbed by a multitude of technological distractions. Be it our phone, computer or television, there always seems to be a screen for us to stare at. Escape the draw of the digital world with Zoppé Italian Circus. This small, one-ring circus seats no more than 500 guests and provides an intimate entertainment experience. Seated only 20 feet away from the ring, audience members are able to interact with the protagonist, Nino the Clown. The show features its classic performances as well as two new acts. Audiences will now be able to enjoy the exquisite acrobatic act of the world-famous Black Bear Group as well as the Rolla bolla and hair hanging performances from Jose and Elizabeth Ayala of Mexico. Tosca Zoppé, a sixth generation circus performer and cousin of the high-wire walking Nik Wallenda, provides insight on what it’s like to be inside the ring and the magic that the show provides its audience. GROWING UP INSIDE THE RING

Zoppé has been a part of the circus world her whole life. She explains that her first performance took place when she was just two years old, balancing on her father’s hands. Although this is a remarkable age to start any career, Zoppé says this is actually how most children start in the circus. In fact, there were many other children that she grew up and performed with. Zoppé explains that a single circus can have up to ten families. Each family has their own special skill that they bring to the show, the Zoppé’s being horse experts. The families teach each other to learn new skills and performances. Zoppé calls the circus a “playground” and explains that circus performers have a “beautiful life” in which they get to travel and try new things, while being protected by the circus environment where “everyone takes care of each other.” CONTINUED >

HOLIDAY MAGIC AT ZOPPÉ ITALIAN CIRCUS

(CON TI N U ED)

Zoppé says the show will be carried into the next generation, as it has for the past 173 years. The circus was founded in 1842 by a French clown and a Hungarian ballerina who fell in love and immigrated to Italy. Although Zoppé comes from a long line of performers, she says this career was “never forced upon” her and her siblings. Instead, her parents encouraged them to follow their own passions and dreams. However, Zoppé’s passion is for the circus. “When you grow up in this environment, it is hard to imagine doing anything else,” she says. THE SHOW

Zoppé’s performs in the show with her beautiful horses. With them, she provides an incredible act that consists of horseback ballet and fire jumping. She also has experience performing with other animals, as well as aerial work. As mentioned, the performers teach each other their skills and try different roles in the shows. Although Zoppé “loves the aerial work,” she says “the horses are my passion” and “the root of what we are.” Aside from performing in the show, Zoppé finds herself behind the scenes. She holds several different responsibilities including directing, programming, music and costuming. She holds all of the performers in high respect. When asked what her favorite performance is, she says, “I love all of them.” 24

Chandler Lifestyle | December 2015

"Being a performer is much more than having a skill,” she says. "Performers need to both connect with and feel the audience.” A PERFORMANCE LIKE NO OTHER

Keeping in line with “Old World” Italian tradition, Zoppé Italian Circus provides its audience with a unique experience. Guests enter the exquisite, European style tents and quickly find themselves interacting with performers and other audience members. They then continue their journey into what Zoppé calls the “most intimate, beautiful performance experience” in a “warm and beautiful atmosphere.” Zoppé credits the performers’ ability to connect with the guests as what makes the “circus so different and special.” They do not simply roll out acts. “We give our soul to the audience,” she says. The performers help us break free from a world imbedded with technology and distractions. We are at a point in this world where we are disconnected with reality. This show brings people back to reality and allows them to experience every emotion.” Audience members find themselves cheering, laughing, crying, and becoming immersed in the show. This is why Zoppé Italian Circus can truly say that guests “come as strangers but leave as family.” “I wouldn’t trade my life for any other life in the world,” Zoppé says. She not only loves what she does, but the people she is with.

“I wouldn’t trade my life for any other life in the world,” Zoppé says. She not only loves what she does, but the people she is with.

Even though not all of the performers are blood related, they are still part of the family. “It takes a whole company to make [the show] happen,” she explains. “The beauty comes out of everyone, not just one person.” A HOLIDAY TRADITION

This holiday season, allow yourself to escape from the digital world and enjoy the magic of Zoppé Italian Circus. Michelle Mac Lennan, General Manager of Chandler Center for the Arts, is thrilled to have the circus return to Chandler in time for the holidays. “Having Zoppé return year after year is one of those rare instances where, as a director, you know you have a very special tradition.

In this case, Zoppé returning for a seventh straight year indicates how much of an impression they have with our audience and our community. We have several families that plan their holiday festivities around Zoppé, and many who consider themselves a part of the Zoppé family,” she says. This year’s show features beloved classics including Nino the Clown, Papino the Clown, Tosca Zoppé and her beautiful horses, Rudolf Heinen and his performing canines, and many new performances. The show runs from December 22 through January 3 at Chandler Center for the Arts. Ticket prices range from $15 to $40. For more information, visit ChandlerCenter.org.

an Blaser-Upchurch will welcome nine new families to the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) Holiday Party this month with open arms and an open heart. It will be a bittersweet welcoming, because each of these families represents an officer lost in the line of duty. However, the gathering will be a happy one for surviving spouses, Bl a

children, family and co-workers and an opportunity to share memories and support each other through the holiday season. Blaser-Upchurch is the president of C.O.P.S. Arizona and a victim advocate at the Arizona Department of Corrections. She is also the surviving spouse of DPS Sgt. John Blaser and knows all too well how challenging the first holidays can be for someone who has lost a loved one. “My husband had been an officer for four years when I met him. He was such a good person and a good man. We get through it by thinking something like that isn’t going to happen to them, but we know the risks,” says Blaser-Upchurch. “You can’t think about that every day, and then something like this happens and it’s shattering. And that’s what C.O.P.S. does, it helps rebuild those shattered lives.”

Fallen DPS Sgt. John Blaser

WHAT NEXT

There are a lot of great organizations that help when tragedy strikes, but C.O.P.S. services are lifelong. Blaser-Upchurch remembers her husband’s funeral and the immense support she felt. However, after all was said and done, she was left in a fog and couldn’t figure out what next. Even though her husband passed away 25 years ago, she recalls the name of the C.O.P.S. volunteer who knocked on her door. Her name was Cathy and she too had suffered the loss of her husband just three years prior. Cathy told her that she could help her walk this path. “We did not have children and I had to reinvent myself. Cathy helped me figure out what I was going to do with my life. By helping others, I’ve helped myself so much and it helps me honor John’s loss, because he paid the ultimate sacrifice. I’m honored that I was married to him. He was taken way too soon, but we don’t have choices in these matters and we get through the best we can,” says Blaser-Upchurch.

MCSO Bill Coleman's surviving daughter and spouse

C.O.P.S. supports parents, spouses, children, siblings and co-workers after the loss of an officer. They find ways to work with each unique situation, because everyone grieves differently. Members of C.O.P.S. meet the families and tailor support services to their needs and each group will connect with others who truly have walked in their shoes. In addition to localized support, C.O.P.S. also hosts retreats - offered at no cost - to families and co-workers. The retreats and services are there for these survivors no matter where they are in life. Sometimes adults who experience loss at a young age discover when they start having a family of their own that it brings up emotions and grief. “It’s amazing seeing children connecting with other children, when they go to C.O.P.S. Kids Camp. They really connect throughout life,” says Blaser-Upchurch. Everyone at camp will be offered grief counseling, but they’ll also have some fun, too.

gathering. Blaser-Upchurch loves seeing the officers interacting with the families. Plus, it’s not another memorial, it’s a happy place to share stories and make new memories. “It’s a very positive experience and it’s so fun to see the kids excited about Santa. It renews your excitement about Christmas, especially for the new survivors. The kids are smiling and laughing and having a good time with other kids,” says Blaser-Upchurch. Santa will be taking photographs with the guests and passing out gifts. Stuffington Bear Factory will help kids make a special toy to take home. There will be fun surprises for the teens as well, along with dinner and treats for all. “For some of the families it might be the first year or second year and they need to have new, different traditions and find comfort in those who understand. Sometimes people just need to know we are a family. I’ll walk up and give them a hug and let them know that we are here for them,” says Blaser-Upchurch. The party’s theme is Project Blue Light after the C.O.P.S. national campaign, in which people light a blue light for fallen officers. The event will glow in remembrance of loved ones lost and survivors will be gifted a light to take home to help keep memories bright.

Parting Thoughts Main Campus Family Dining Room

Open Your Heart WORDS STEVE ZABILSKI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

H

ere at St. Vincent de Paul, we are dedicated to feeding, clothing, housing and healing the most vulnerable in our community who have no where else to turn for help. Restoring hope also is at the essence of our mission. Just as important, we provide opportunities for volunteers to carry out this mission for their neighbors in need. Every day there are countless opportunities to give others a new chance at life. And during the holidays, there are many different ways to give back to St. Vincent de Paul. We operate five dining rooms across the Valley that are excellent places for volunteers to serve those who are hungry. In these dining rooms, we’re able to serve more than 1.2 million meals each year to hungry families and individuals. But we couldn’t do it without our volunteers. Duties include set up, serving, bussing tables and clean-up. For those who want to give a gift online, our Compassion Catalog allows you to see real needs in our community and the tangible ways you can make a difference in someone’s life. You can purchase these items as gifts for Christmas and all year-round. Simply select the Tribute option when giving online and we’ll send a note to your loved ones so they know a gift of compassion was made in their name. 34

Chandler Lifestyle | December 2015

If you belong to an organization, club, business or school, perhaps you’d be interested in serving as a group. Many groups do that and find it a rewarding experience. Another great way to help people with specific needs is by organizing a drive. You can help by holding collection drives for items that are in great need at St. Vincent de Paul. Holiday drives are very special, as they provide Thanksgiving food and Christmas gifts to families and children who may not experience that otherwise. Throughout the year, items such as clothing, hygiene articles, diapers, new or gently-used blankets, shoes, toys, school supplies, books and canned food are great for hosted drives. Lastly, we are very excited about our annual Adopt-A-Family Program, which aims to help families who cannot afford to buy food or gifts for Christmas. Our Valley-wide food pantries interview families in the community who want to be adopted and get information to assess their needs. Sponsors such as you then provide the food and gifts for the participating families. We have found that it is a transformative experience for all involved, and leaves lasting memories for both the family and the sponsor. To learn more about our programs and ways you can get involved, please visit our website at StVincentdePaul.net and join thousands of others who are serving those in our community with love, hope and compassion.
