Three cheers for Chandler Unified School District Nutrition for implementing the Clean Label Initiative, an effort to remove unnecessary additives from breakfast and lunch meals served to kids at Chandler schools. The team removed more than 30 additives and is utilizing wholesome ingredients in each meal. As a mom, I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. So dust off those tennis shoes, charge your iPod, and head out the door for 30 minutes of exercise. Reward yourself with a delicious green smoothie packed with plenty of vitamins and nutrients. Your mind and body will thank you. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2016!

SCHOOL CENTS Chandler Fashion Center is supporting local schools through the School Cents program. Since 2008, the program has donated more than $110,000 to participating schools. Points are earned for schools when customers submit receipts from businesses at Chandler Fashion Center and The Boulevard Shops. Stores participating include Barnes & Noble, California Pizza Kitchen and Jamba Juice. An annual prize ranging from $300 to $3,000 is awarded in the form of mall gift cards to each participating school. Schools can then use the cards to purchase classroom items or student incentives. School Cents runs through March 31. For a list of participating schools or to learn more information “As an artist, when I convert a digital color photograph to black and white I call it the new old way of photography. These photographs are my new old way of looking at the new old world,” says Granzow. “I’ve given the location, but no title because I don’t want you to be influenced by what I think the story in the photographs should be," he says. "I’ve chosen black and white for this exhibition because I feel the subtlety of monochromatic tones suits these images, and in some cases color can detract from the story or the direction a viewer’s eye follows through the scene.” Granzow’s black and white photographs show the Old World of Europe with sprinklings of New World throughout. PURE BARRE OPENS NEW STUDIO LOW IMPACT, HIGH INTENSITY BARRE WORKOUT

t is officially the New Year, and with that comes New Year’s resolutions. Many New Year’s resolutions focus on making healthy lifestyle changes. For some people, simply purchasing a new gym membership isn’t enough. Fortunately, there is a new option for those looking to improve their health and adjust their fitness regimen: Pure Barre. Pure Barre, a fitness studio chain, opened a new location in the San Tan Village area. The new studio celebrated its opening in November.

PERFECT FOR EVERY FITNESS LEVEL

Pure Barre is an innovative full-body workout that involves exercising each muscle group and stretching. “Pure Barre is one of the most effective ways to change someone’s body," says Nicole Hines, owner of Pure Barre San Tan Village. "It is a low impact, high intensity workout that focuses on isometric movements centered around a ballet barre.” Hines has always valued athletics and fitness, but an illness prevented her from fully embracing her love for an active lifestyle.

owns her own Pure Barre studio, she is looking forward to sharing her love for Pure Barre with the Southeast Valley. “I really want to share that passion, help others discover the workout and see it change their lives as it did mine,” she says.

"I couldn't do anything," she says. "I lost all my muscle strength for three years and I had to walk with a cane." Everything changed for Hines when her friend took her to a Pure Barre class for her birthday. “I hadn’t been able to work out for three years and for my birthday she found out about Pure Barre," Hines says. "She took me to a class and since that day I have been going six days a week. It completely changed my life; it was the first workout that my body could sustain after going through illness." FINDING HER PASSION

That gift has had an incredible impact on her life and over time she has developed a strong passion for Pure Barre. Now that Hines

Hines decided to open her studio in Gilbert because she grew up there and because of the growing community. She believes that Pure Barre is a wonderful option for busy mothers and families in need of a quick and effective workout that can fit into any schedule. The studio offers 30 classes a week, seven days a week. There are classes in the morning, afternoon and evening. A typical Pure Barre class aims to engage the entire body. Throughout the 55 to 60 minute class, you will work each muscle group and then stretch. The exercise routines are always changing in order to keep workouts exciting and fresh. “It takes a few classes to understand the technique, but clients see results in as few as 10 classes,” Hines says. GET YOUR BARRE ON

When attending a Pure Barre class, one should wear leggings or capris and a shirt that covers the midriff. One should also bring a pair of sticky socks, a type of sock that aids in balance and prevents one from slipping when doing the workout. These socks can be purchased at the studio. Hines also recommends you bring a bottle of water and a towel. The rest of the equipment will be provided for you. CONTINUED >

“A lot of people think they need dance experience or ballet experience,” says Hines, but that is not true, she says, “If you can hold onto the barre you can do Pure Barre.”

Trying a new workout can be intimidating and, at times, requires one to step out of his or her comfort zone. “A lot of people think they need dance experience or ballet experience,” says Hines, but that is not true, she says, “If you can hold onto the barre you can do Pure Barre.” The workout is for women and men of all ages and fitness levels. “You work at your own level,” she says. Hines describes the Pure Barre workout as an “act of community.” It is the perfect workout to do with friends and family. It has a positive impact on one’s health and also allows one to share a social experience with others. When asked what Hines looks forward to most about her new studio, she says that she is most looking forward to working with clients, hearing their stories and working especially with women in the community. "I am excited to help change bodies, change minds, change lives and build confidence," she says. Pure Barre is located at 2556 S. Val Vista Drive Suite 103, in Gilbert. To learn more visit

SCOTT'S TRAINING SYSTEMS

Changing Lives By Building Courage And Strength ARTICLE ERICA FORST | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

20

Chandler Lifestyle | January 2016

“I

wanted to change people’s lives.” This simple idea has been a constant motivator in Scott Keppel's life. The idea came to be during a time when Arnold, Hulk Hogan, and Rocky were every little kid’s idols. Since he was 13 years old, Keppel has strived to be like his fitness heroes. He read weightlifting books and magazines and hit the weight room hard. The results of this intense weight training showed on the field when he played football in high school and college.

FUELING THE FLAME

Keppel earned a degree in business, but that was not where his fire burned. After working for a major rental car company, he decided his passion was fitness. His desire to change lives led him to develop Scott’s Training Systems (STS). This system provides a team of coaches--not simply trainers--to clients. The trainers give one-on-one attention and cover everything from home workouts to nutrition. After a free consultation, the client is paired with a trainer who best fits the client’s fitness goals and personality. Setting both physical goals and mental goals is part of the training. TURNING ADVERSITY INTO GOOD WILL

The journey has not always been straightforward, though. Fitness took on a new meaning when Keppel’s wife, Melissa, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July

of 2011. This changed Keppel’s outlook on life forever. He obtained his certification in post-breast cancer recovery and his specialized training enables him to appropriately guide survivors of cancer in their fitness goals. Keppel wrote the e-book A Fit Guide to Post Breast Cancer Recovery and also started the Busting Butts to Save Breasts charity event to bring awareness to the disease and educate the community about the importance of both diet and exercise in cancer prevention. The Busting Butts to Save Breasts 5K Run/Walk and Bootcamp, in its 5th year, donated its proceeds to Face in the Mirror, a non-profit focused on nurturing cancer patients.

BEARING FITNESS

And clients are seeing the results. “I spent a lifetime of being the last kid picked in gym class when I was introduced

to Scott," says Stephanie S. Wade, M.D. "I was turning 40 and had accomplished so much in every other aspect of my life, yet never felt confident with my body image. I decided to challenge myself by entering a figure competition. Scott assessed my fitness level and set a 10-month plan for training and nutrition. Some trainers can create a nutrition and exercise plan, but what I love about Scott is that he always – subtly – knows how to train you mentally to get out of your own way.”

for my well-being allows me to trust in him, so I can focus on building strength and the activities of fitness and wellness.” Through a lot of hard work and tenacity, Keppel has earned a position as the official trainer for various pageants, including Miss Arizona USA and Miss Teen Arizona USA. Keppel is well known in the world of bikini, figure, fitness and body building competitions. Many of his clients have earned top standings after his coaching. A CHANDLER LIFESTYLE

His clients trust his expertise. “Scott is my champion," says Ashleigh Graham. "He gives me the courage to push myself by believing in my abilities, my potential and me. My fear of physical activity is deep rooted and only intensifies based on my medical history. Scott makes intelligent decisions based on knowing the human body’s abilities during times of medical stress, such as cancer or injury. His knowledge and genuine care 22

Chandler Lifestyle | January 2016

Keppel chose to base his business in Chandler for several reasons, mainly because of the sense of community. “I like the fact that many people in Chandler are hard workers and the town is small enough that it still has the community feel we strive to have at STS," he says. Keppel also has goals outside of fitness related to the Chandler community and family, including wife Melissa and children Gavin, 13, Alexandra (Alex), 11 and Gabriel (Gabe), 8. Keppel says his goals are simple. "I want to be the best husband and father I can be," he says. "I enjoy holding charity events and giving back to the community.” He also takes pride in coaching Gabe in flag football and helping Gavin with football conditioning. Scott’s Training Systems is located at 6100 West Gila Springs Place #23 in Chandler near West Chandler Boulevard and North Kyrene Road. nyone who has ever glided across a dance floor or danced at a wedding (or even alone in the living room) can tell you that dancing makes you smile. Sometimes (and I speak from experience) the worse you dance the bigger you smile! Dancing wakes up a hidden part of your soul and often brings people together in unique and personal ways. Dance can also be healing. That’s precisely what Dignity Health Foundation is working so diligently to facilitate through programs like its dance class for stroke survivors. Every Tuesday a dance team comprised of 15 survivors meets in the Arizona Ballroom Champions Dance Studio in Tempe to dance, at no cost, to the participants. “If you have the money, you can do anything you want, but I’m trying to start philanthropic programs that make sense for everyone so people don’t get left out,” says Rex Albright, development officer for Dignity Health Foundation East Valley. “Dancing is free so anyone can participate. To me that’s what community health care is all about.” STEP-BY-STEP

Chandler Lifestyle | January 2016

The dance program evolved from a class offered at Dignity Health Foundation East Valley's Stroke Camp that takes place twice a year. Terri Lamb, a volunteer and community liaison and Shawn Nerdahl, owner of Arizona Ballroom Champions, were inspired to take the class one step further. “We need more of this. We need this all the time,” says Lamb. A group of caretakers and volunteers collaborated to create the weekly dance program and they have been dancing their way to happiness ever since. The foundation supports several programs designed to heal, inspire and encourage people to not just live life, but to enjoy and experience it to the fullest.

What they have found is that often the social interaction in the dance class is more important than the actual movement. It gives participants a sense of connection with others and a support system of likeminded survivors. “Dignity Health is supporting community health," says Albright. "It’s not just about helping someone who has a symptom. What we want to do is offer hope. There is hope after stroke.”

healing meaningful," says Albright. "If you have any ideas on what more we could be doing in the East Valley, please let us know." If you or a loved one or friend is a stroke survivor and would like to join the team, the ballroom doors are always open and dancers are being accepted. Author and visionary Vivian Greene, who famously said "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to

dance in the rain," also said, “Giving is the highest expression of our power.”

MOVING FORWARD

Dignity Health also offers several programs for people struggling to dance their way through life’s challenges so they can move forward, including caretakers, diabetics and people who have had hip or joint replacements. They even have programs for new mothers. “What we want to accomplish is getting your soul and mind together for the healing process," Albright says. "Once we get your heart right, you can focus on healing you." A large number of the programs have spun from ideas shared by community members and philanthropic, volunteer-minded individuals who are inspired to help others. “Our mission as a foundation is to work with our community and hospital to make

Relax and relish in the fact that it’s a new year and you can make a new start. What’s more, eating healthy and light is easier than you might imagine, thanks to many of the menu offerings at Whole Foods Market Chandler. The spacious store, located off the Loop 101 and Chandler Boulevard, features a number of food bars and dining areas – including a pizzeria, hot food, a smokehouse, a taqueria and a sandwich station – where you can get a quick meal to go for one or bring in the whole family to dine in. Indeed, there’s something here for everyone, even those with vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegetarian diets.

“This is the place to come to get a lot of different meal options,” says Amber Gough, metro marketing field team leader for Tempe and Chandler Whole Foods locations. “Even if we don’t have something listed on the menu, we can probably pull it from the grocery aisle for you. If we can say ‘yes’ to it, we will.” CONTINUED >

Not sure where to begin? Gough suggested starting with a few customer favorites: • Vegan Italian Pizza – Made with seasonal vegetables (our version was topped with squash, button mushrooms, spinach and zucchini, then seasoned with fresh rosemary, sage, thyme, Italian seasoning and olive oil), this nutrient-packed slice of greens is so satisfying you won’t even notice there’s no cheese. “It’s one of our biggest sellers,” says Joe LaSpina, prepared foods team leader, adding that Whole Foods also uses locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. • California Quinoa Salad – The slightly nutty-tasting combo of red quinoa and edamame is mixed with mango pieces, red bell pepper, almonds, raisins, cilantro, red onion and coconut flakes plus a splash of lime juice and balsamic vinegar for a delightful spicy-meets-sweet experience that also packs in the protein. This salad is labeled as one of the store’s Health Starts Here® options, which means they are nutrient-dense, contain only healthy fats, are plant-strong™ (the fiber, protein and phytonutrients come from plants) and made using whole foods, those in a pure and unprocessed form. “That label means it’s food that’s good for you,” Gough says. “You don’t have to read the ingredients or even think about it.” • Kale Waldorf Salad – This pretty little mountain of kale – which is full of vitamins and minerals – gets dressed to the nines with bits of apples, celery, carrots, walnuts and raisins, and then topped off with mint and a dressing made of Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, apple syrup and salt. And the bonus? “This is pretty easy to make at home,” LaSpina says. • Beef Lettuce-Wrap Tacos – Romaine lettuce envelops shredded sharp cheddar cheese, onion and chunks of Step 1 Rated beef that’s been treated to a zesty green-chili marinade that

gives it a real kick. Lots of other toppings are available, too, at the made-to-order taqueria station. Whole Foods is proud to use the Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Standards on its beef, chicken and pork, and Step 1 calls for no antibiotics, no added growth hormones and no animal by-products in the feed. “We love the program because it’s all about transparency,” Gough says. • Vegan Chicken and Slaw Sandwich – Either ensconced within a flour tortilla or nestled inside a hoagie roll, Beyond Meat’s vegan chicken may surprise even the most hardcore carnivore with its authentic-looking texture and appearance. “A lot of people love this brand of vegan meat, and it comes in a lot of varieties,” Gough says of Beyond Meat, the chicken version of which is made with soy and pea protein. Pile on the healthy extras – crisp cucumber slices, creamy avocado slices, lettuce and a spicy ranch-style dressing with slaw – and you’ll have a plate that’s clean in no time. • Chandler Garden Smoothie – That luscious green color alone (courtesy of spinach, cucumber, basil and kale) makes your brain realize this is one über-healthy beverage, but the bright, sweet undertones (courtesy of coconut water, frozen pineapple and mango) make your mouth say, “It’s a treat!” Grab a straw and slurp down some of the tastiest nourishment around. And if greens aren’t your thing, there are 17 other smoothie flavors to try, plus four kinds of juice and plenty of wheat grass shots. See? It really is simple to eat right and even to do so, so to speak, in your own backyard. So, let (caloric) bygones be bygones and welcome 2016 with a healthy new approach. Parting Thoughts

Keeping Kids Healthy WESLEY DELBRIDGE, R.D., DIRECTOR OF FOOD AND NUTRITION AT CHANDLER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

T

he word is out: Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) Nutrition has embarked on a Clean Label Initiative. Your first question may be, "What is a clean label?" Since there are no official guidelines defining the term, every individual and organization is open to its own interpretation. At CUSD Nutrition, we see a clean label as one free of unnecessary additives. For the first phase of our initiative, this will include eliminating 30 common artificial colors and f lavors, hydrogenated fats, MSG and artificial sweeteners, just to name a few. Over time, our definition will evolve as research and the food industry continue to progress. We have three registered dietitians on staff to help improve the nutrition of our menus and work with students and parents who have special dietary needs. Through the addition of simple, wholesome ingredients and the elimination of avoidable additives, CUSD Nutrition wants to bring simplicity to food labels. We believe artificial, highly processed additives have no nutritional value to your child’s diet. That is why we will be utiliz34

ing our 25,000 square-foot, fully equipped central kitchen to create numerous items from scratch. Ground white meat turkey for taco meat, whole grains for all bakery items, homemade hummus and high fiber, and Vitamin A-rich sweet potatoes will be used as a base for many of our recipes. We will continue to evolve, and by 2020 our goal is to eliminate more than 70 total additives from the food we serve. We feel a strong sense of responsibility to equip your students with the best possible health for future success and we believe these additives provide no nutritional benefit or advantage. With advancing research and technology, we are becoming aware of some of the potential risks associated with common additives. Evidence-based research from Whole Foods Market and the shared concern from numerous parents, have inspired our transition. We are transitioning to food in its purest form so that our students can experience locally grown food that is made fresh daily. You can trust that CUSD Nutrition is providing healthy, safe, nutritious food each day, all at a very low cost.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for daily tips and information to help you at home and see the way we are revolutionizing school nutrition at CUSD. Our free app gives parents real time nutritional information and is available for download at the iTunes App Store. Learn more about CUSD Nutrition and the Clean Label Initiative, access school breakfast and lunch menus, find nutritional resources and submit suggestions at ww2. Chandler.K12.Az.Us/CusdNutrition.
