I
often tell my A-type husband that someday he is going to miss tripping over those Hot Wheels left in hallway, or the loud noises coming from the toy room as our kids play super hero’s. Eventually, he cannot help but agree with me. What makes a home isn’t necessarily the items in that home, but more importantly, the feeling you create within the walls.
As a child, my parents rarely spent money on cosmetic accents for our home. My mom, however, could bargain shop like nobody’s business. She found an original Knoll chair at the thrift store and only purchased it because she thought it was pretty. In a way, we are all connected to each other by design, and to the past, through the objects in our home.

While I certainly did not grow up in a lavishly designed home, I grew up in a beautifully loving home. Yes, I love and respect all that involves home design. At the end of the day, what truly matters in our home is the joy and love that resides within.

BOULDER PHILHARMONIC IN DENVER April is a big month for the Boulder Philharmonic with the premier of Boulder Philharmonic: Bach’s St. Matthew Passion on Sunday April 24 at 2pm at Central Presbyterian Church in Denver. Bach never wrote and opera, yet his St. Matthew Passion is as theatrical and dramatically
paced as anything ever presented on an operatic stage. In an unprecedented collaboration, the Boulder Phil, along with Central City Opera, Boulder Bach Festival and the CU college of Music present a semi-staged realization of this masterpiece. It is, without a doubt, a very human drama that examines core matters of faith, spirituality and life itself. BoulderPhil.org

Development Report, sponsored by The Kenney Group and produced by the Cherry Creek Area Business Alliance and the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District, shows impressive numbers with seven projects completed in 2015 and another 15 projects announced or under construction as of February 2016. In summer 2012 the Cherry Creek Area plan was adopted. The new area plan outlined a vision for a connected, distinctive, green and prosperous Cherry Creek, a vision that required updating outdated zoning rules for the one square-mile area, bordered by Colorado to University Boulevards and 6th Avenue to Cherry Creek South Drive. The new zoning was unanimously adopted by city council in 2014 and has since paved the way for development and growth in the area. When planned and under construction projects are complete, Cherry Creek will see a 225% increase in residential units, 300% increase in hotel rooms, a 33% increase in square feet of office space and a 25% increase in square feet of retail space. “The Cherry Creek Area development report tells a unique story about the Cherry Creek area and the effectiveness of long-term place making efforts,” said David Steel, Chair of the Cherry Creek Area Business Alliance and President of Western Development Group. “For decades, we saw minimal redevelopment activity in the area. Now, with the new zoning in place, the area is one of the most desirable mixed-use, walkable urban nodes in the country.” CherryCreekNorth.com March 2016 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

20,000 square foot greenhouse with three working farms, The GrowHaus functions as a nonprofit indoor farm in
Denver's Elyria-Swansea neighborhood with a vision to catalyze a neighborhood-based food system in a community that is healthy, equitable and resident-driven. This is essentially achieved through three program areas: food production, food distribution and food education. Situated inside what’s known as a food desert—the majority of the local population doesn’t live within three miles of a grocery store. Most residents commute via bus, which means taking two buses to the nearest grocery store. If you’ve ever carted your groceries home on public transportation, you know first hand what a challenge this can be. Determined to be more than a quick fix type solution, GrowHaus partners with local co-ops and farmers to offer food and education to the public. It operates on a sliding scale fee so individuals who shop in the market can pay what they can.

DENVER FOOD RESCUE
A cooking class each Monday is taught with whatever items come in over the weekend from Denver Food Rescue. Residents are shown how to prepare produce and sent home with a box containing approximately $80-100 worth of food products. But it doesn’t end there. Students are also educated about terms they may not be familiar with like GMO, organic and local, along with various fundamental growing principals that, in turn, spark more interest. EDUCATION
“We’re training community members to become caterers and open restaurants,” says Program Director Isabel Sanchez. She’s also a permaculture designer, teacher, urban farmer, activist

Providing many options for local food for the neighborhood and their families, GrowHaus aims to be an education hub revolving around nutrition, gardening, cooking and other essential skills for building healthy communities. The Seed2Seed 8-week program focuses on healthy diet, healthy soil and healthy communities. Participants learn
ez
about the essentials of nutrition, growing food, social justice and entrepreneurship. And since many neighborhood residents are without health insurance as well, the organization also teaches an herb and nutrition class with an emphasis on healing home remedies. GrowHaus believes that healthy food is a right, not a privilege. Sanchez says, “The goal is that it changes.” Meaning that the nonprofit helps to provide healthy food and education to lift its neighboring community out of its current food desert status. HOW TO GET INVOLVED
In addition to volunteering or interning, you can also become a member. También, a monthly donation-based membership club in support of The GrowHaus, is where members make up a diverse network of change makers who are passionate about creating positive change in Denver's food system. Look for an upcoming annual seed swap in March, along with an Earth Day event in April. "The goal is that it changes," says Sanchez. "The goal is that it changes," says Sanchez.

DENVER FOOD RESCUE
According to Feed America, 48.1 million Americans lived in food-insecure households last year. This is not only a national issue; it’s alarmingly local. Denver Food Rescue prevents fresh, but bruised produce from getting chucked in the dumpster from food vendors (i.e. grocery stores, farmers markets, etc.) and then directly redistributes it into the communities of food insecure families. About 1000 pounds of food is transported daily as part of its Free Grocery Program. To keep the system sustainable, all of the food is hauled via bicycle, except for cases of extreme weather or extremely large food rescue events. Programs are led/facilitated/sustained by members of the community. DenverFoodRescue.org

've always kind of joked around with my girlfriends that we should do a dip potluck, because whenever we get together for dinners we
are most excited for the dip appetizer to start. So when deciding what kind of food to have for the Among the Colors launch party, the Dip Bar was my fantasy made reality. The best thing about entertaining with dips is that most dips do best made a day in advance. Which makes entertaining super easy when all you have to do is pull the dips out of the fridge and serve with crudities, chips, crackers, etc. My suggestion when hosting a dip bar is to having something cheesy, something creamy, and something herby. If for a larger party,

SUN-DRIED TOMATO BACON GOAT CHEESE DIP • 8 oz goat cheese, plan and soft. • 3 pieces of cooked bacon, crumbled. • 6 oz plain yogurt. I use sheep yogurt. • 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes • handful of basil, tarragon and oregano. • salt and pepper to taste. Let goat cheese get to room temperature. Place yogurt, goatcheese, herbs and bacon in a blender or food processor. I have a Vitamix, which works great. If you are not sure how strong your blender is, try a food processor. Designer Tips: 1
Embrace emptiness. I find people are afraid of leaving walls blank or corners empty, but when your eye travels through a space it needs a place to “rest” or the room ends up feeling crowded.
2 Choose plants. Hands down, plants are the easiest and quickest way to add style to a space. Cacti or ferns will add a boho vibe while snake plants and fiddle leaf figs feel more mid-century. 3 Avoid visual clutter. If you’re a minimalist, it doesn’t mean you have to sell all your possessions. Keeping a tight color palette throughout your home and using attractive storage (like baskets) will go a long way towards reducing the chaos. 4 Don’t be afraid to start over. So many of my clients hold on to things they don’t love any more because they were initially expensive, but it’s easy to sell an item on Craigslist and use the money to find something that is actually “you”. And so worth it in the end!

DIY Leather wedge by Annabode & Co. HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED.
• A piece of wood, about 1.5″ wide & 6.5″ long • White paint (preferably high gloss) • Minwax Polycrylic (again, gloss) • Whatever kind of saw you have on hand • Drill • Leather strip, about .5″ wide & 5″ long • #6 brass finishing washer • #6 3/4 in. brass phillips flat head wood screw • Sander or sandpaper • Paintbrushes, pencil, ruler First, use your pencil and ruler to draw a straight line diagonally across the wood. Saw along the line and sand to a smooth finish. Here’s a tip: if you have a longer length of wood, it’s easier to mark the 6.5″ length and saw the diagonal line before cutting it off the larger piece. Otherwise, you might need a clamp so you don’t saw your fingers off. Use the ruler to mark off a section at the bottom of the wedge and paint it white. Then use the polycrylic to coat the unpainted wood. Do NOT use the polycrylic on the white paint — it will yellow it. Take your leather strip and fold it in half, so that the two ends meet. kitchen needs to be many things. It needs to be a functional space where
you can easily cook and work, but it should also be inviting; a comfortable space that people can enjoy spending time in. In the case of this kitchen remodel on 7th Avenue in the Historic District of Cherry Creek, Thurston Kitchen and Bath Designer Tamar Chang, has created a timeless space that both pays homage to its historic roots and facilitates the needs of a modern kitchen. The goal for this kitchen remodel was to simultaneously match the space to the historic grandeur of the rest of the house, and to make it a more functional working space. This home is 100 years old and required a unique and creative mixture of keeping some of the kitchen’s signature historic elements and updating other features to not only keep, but enhance both the kitchen and the house’s character and style.

With granite countertops and white marble backsplash, these elements of the kitchen are quiet and work well together with some of the space’s more unique features. THE LITTLE DETAILS
Unique features in the kitchen include a handmade glass mosaic sink and the room’s big, oversized crown molding. Modern and personalized details, such as the felt-lined drawers to protect silverware and some of the other pullouts with various purposes work with these historic elements to create a sense of calm productivity. According to Chang, it’s when all of these elements work well together that a kitchen can come together as a whole and singular space. TIPS FOR A TIMELESS KITCHEN:

DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE.
My art exists at the intersection of conceptual art and painting. What that essentially means is that the style is determined by the content. Right now that content focuses on acts of mass violence and domestic and international terrorism, and I latch onto the symbols associated with those acts. These symbols lead me to create minimal paintings and other artwork that mesh into one larger work. My paintings themselves are often torn or look beaten, like they’ve been bruised. I like that aesthetic because it reflects the violent acts that inspired the paintings.

The spatial relationships between these monumentally sized two-dimensional spaces and three-dimensional pieces deliver a context where the viewer can relive the haunting violence of these events. HOW DOES COLOR, OR THE ABSENCE OF IT, PLAY INTO YOUR ART?
