T
here’s something so rejuvenating about the month of May. The trees are awakening, flowers are budding to say hello to the sun, summer travel plans are closer than ever, and it’s finally wedding season. I’m starting to think May is my favorite time of year. That’s why this issue revolves around wedding & travel, two of the loveliest topics. We went to the heart of Denver and set up a Pantone-inspired wedding shoot at the Denver Botanic Gardens. With mid-century elements, geometric shapes and plenty of pastel florals it turned into dreamland. We also played around with confectionary centerpieces, a trend we love this wedding season. By far our biggest obsession this month was colorful Cuba. My Grandparents immigrated to the United States from Cuba many years ago and the culture has survived the passage of time and generations in my family. With tensions loosening for the first time since the Cold War, it’s an exciting time to share stories and useful travel tips with our readers for adventuring in Havana and the countryside. I hope you all enjoy the May flowers and we encourage you to read Cherry Creek Lifestyle alfresco. This special month only comes around once a year, so enjoy it!

A
s a child, Katelyn Stalowy recognized the agony of giving single gifts, so she decided to give many things in place of just one. As an
adult the only thing that has changed is her job. “I hate the pressure of a single gift,” says Stalowy. “So, even since I was a kid, and really in the last couple of years, I started to gift to people in my life in a selection—an assortment of things that I thought were a better gift than a single, one item.” The custom gift boxes business was born out of long family talks during Christmas of 2014 and the natural talents of the Stalowy and Lobascio families. Katelyn’s husband, Craig, builds the boxes by hand; her sister, Gabby, handwrites calligraphy; and Katelyn curates all of the contents. Gift boxes come in small and large and can be shipped all over and outside of the United States.

hand—that’s something that’s different from a lot of the others.” Blooms, salted caramels, single origin coffee and wood wick candles are a small handful of items in inventory. Gift boxes are typically created from item-specific customer requests, budgets, holidays or themes. “I essentially create gifts for any season,” says Stalowy. ”Any category, any type of holiday. I have a ton of different stuff in inventory.” Through the participation in farmers' and flea markets around town and forming relationships with other local business owners, Manofatto is finding its place in the city of Denver.

“I think there are people here that just have a huge appreciation for things that are locally made, locally sourced and handmade,” says Stalowy. “You can see it in the coffee shops, you can see it in the breweries and you can see it in our restaurants.” For the past year, Stalowy and her family have sanded, stained, curated and shipped gift boxes from home. While planning for the future, the principle stays the same: providing a better option for giving gifts. “The purpose of the business and the business model was to create a better gift,” says Stalowy. “Build a gift that actually feels like there’s heart in it or thought in it.” ManofattoHomemade.com CONTINUED >

LUSH ROMANCE
A Touch of Bliss had a unique vision that could only be facilitated by the right venue. For us, the right venue was the Denver Botanic Gardens in the heart of Denver. The always-romantic and lush space (that real brides, too, enjoy each wedding season) was the perfect dreamy setting for a color-filled shoot. Specifically, the Solarium and Orangery set the mood, but with so many different gardens, settings and displays, it was hard for us to decide on just a couple whimsical spaces. “My vision for the shoot was to bring to life the fairytale vibe of a wedding that I feel like we have all been missing lately,” says CONTINUED > Hope Bradford.

The fairytale came to life starting in the Solarium, a pastel-green glass house tucked away behind the garden’s fresh foliage. Filled with hexagon marble tables and geometric glass terrariums decorated by local artist Moire Parker, each element included flushed pastels and Pantone’s pink and blue. “I’m obsessed with the geometric shape trend, so the mid-century modern idea just fit,” says Sarah McGinnis. Our “Bride” Lacey Spruce is the lifestyle blogger behind My Boring Closet. The “Groom” Julius Kilpatrick is a local designer of the clothing line, A Lion Inside, and personal trainer at Vital Fitness. With the help of so many creative local businesses, this collaboration was everything we could ever dream of. CONTINUED >

COLORFUL CUBA
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SAM ALVIANI
SAM SAYS SERIES Sam grew up roaming the green meadows and river valleys of Vermont. Iit was there that she gleaned an appreciation—and a curiosity—for the small towns of America, and later, for farther corners of the world. She has a deep-rooted penchant for exploring the connection between people and place. As a writer, Sam has focused on food, travel and lifestyle storytelling.
P

beautiful, a disarming time warp, both bucolic bliss and urban grit, an old-school kind of cool derived from economic isolation and a rich, enduring cultural backbone. Cuba can leave you inspired and incensed in the same moment. It’s a place that is misunderstood and deeply entrenched in its sense of place. As ease of travel improves, tourism has brought a sweep of visitors that populate the white-sand beaches of Varadero, the cobbled streets of colonial Trinidad and the sprawling, music-filled cafes of colorful Havana. Cuba—all 42,000 square miles of it—is a sight to see. A lesson in poverty, happiness, beauty, simplicity. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to visit the diverse range of landscapes in its entirety. On a recent trip there, I homed in on two locations in the western region of the country: Havana and Viñales, a small valley town nestled in the mountains of the Pinar del Río. Here are some best practices—a collection of things to know before you make your own trek to the Pearl of the Antilles. GETTING THERE & WHEN TO GO
You can generally expect warmer weather (and more tourists) in the dry season between November and April. If rain doesn’t put you off, May through October is the rainy season. Travelers might want to avoid September and October when the threat of hurricanes is at its highest. Although most organized tour trips now arrange chartered flights directly from the United States, we booked flights to Cancún and worked with a Canadian travel agent to book our Cancún to Havana leg, all without a hitch. HAVANA
A feast for the senses, an untamed energy, a place of contradictions. The steady beat of horse hooves and salsa music. Havana is a place that emanates spirit, even in the face of neglect, and survival through its people and its multitude of awe-inspiring architectural treasures. Explore the sun-washed streets, sip a rum at an open-air bar, share an ice cream walking the leafy promenades of Vedado—it holds a beauty and contagious state of mind that is all its own. Where to Stay
Keep an open mind: skip the hotels and explore the local casas particulares, a private homestay similar to a bed and breakfast. Knock on the door of any building with the tell-tale white and blue symbol to check nightly availability. If you’d like to plan farther in advance, Airbnb has a growing roster of casa owners who list properties. What to See
The Malecón is a quintessential eight kilometer stretch of road that flanks the sea. Walk it, and you’ll see the culture of Cuba: fisherman, 1950s-era automobiles, rowdy teenagers and a host of street food vendors. The road snakes up into the leafy Vedado neighborhood, site of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba and streets evocative of aging grandeur. Getting Around
Let your feet take you where they will. Get lost. The best way to learn about Havana is to explore the crowded neighborhoods, quiet back CONTINUED >

streets and sunlit squares. If you’re heading somewhere that requires a taxi, you can grab one easily near hotels and plazas; most rides are equivalent to five U.S. dollars or less. What to Expect
Havana can be overwhelming, but if you’re there for longer than a day you’ll settle into the mindset and movement of the city. The same things—same contradictions—that can inspire confusion (or even anger) are also what make the city so soulful. VIÑALES
A lush, rolling expanse of jade fields, sprawling tobacco crops and thatched tobacco-drying houses. A valley cradled by towering mogotes and rugged hills. In the quiet of the valley, you’ll find endless opportunity for hiking, rock climbing, cave exploring and swimming hole-hopping. The spirited, cigar-smoke laced village is easygoing; travelers kick-off their shoes (or lace them up) to trek the landscape, seek out dramatic vistas and take in the countryside bliss of the simple life on a porch swing. Where to Stay
If you go the casa particulares route, opt for a room in a house on Viñales’ main drag; most have inviting porches for taking in the activity of the town or relaxing with a book. There are two hotels that can provide the definitive Cuban experience: La Ermita and the class Hotel Los Jazmines; both offer stunning panoramic views of the valley. Rates start at $61 CUC. What to See
Viñales is a Unesco World Heritage site, meaning you’ll want to take in the traditional agriculture at the tobacco farms and take advantage of the otherworldly natural surroundings. Yoan and Yarelis Reyes can guide you on a trek through the Valle de Silencio, a gentle, unexplored stretch of valley, where the majority of the municipality’s tobacco is grown. They’ll take you through fields dotted with oxen and ploughs, as well as the Finca Raul Reyes, the family farm where you can sample hand-rolled cigars and a dose of local rum. Getting Around
To get to Viñales from Havana, we arranged a taxi collectivo (or shared taxi) with several other travelers. Our casa host was happy to help us with this, but you can ask any taxi driver if they know of groups that are leaving and have extra space. Once you get there, Viñales is entirely walkable, but there are plenty of taxis available by the town plaza for longer trips to nearby caves or national parks. What to Expect
Viñales is simple: you’ll find a slow, relaxed pace here—a far cry from the frenetic energy of Havana, and a welcome measure of peace and quiet—a pint-sized agricultural settlement situated in CONTINUED > one of Cuba’s most beautiful natural corners. 36
Cherry Creek Lifestyle | May 2016
Steer clear of hotel restaurants and opt for paladares—in-home restaurants—for the most authentic, innovative tastes of Cuba (like cumin-laced ropa vieja and taro fritters). A few to try in Havana: Atelier, La Guarida and El Cocinero. Check exchange rates before you go; it might be worth it to bring euros instead of U.S. dollars to avoid the 10 percent surcharge tacked on at most currency exchanges in Cuba. We did this in advance at our U.S. bank; you’ll have no access to credit or ATM cards. Assume you’ll have little to no internet connection and no cell service—trust me, you’ll embrace the quiet and connection with your travel partner. Pack light for easy transit between your casa and your next destination. Skip the tourist lines at La Floridita, where Hemingway once threw a few back—visit La Bodeguita Del Medio for a daiquiri instead. Do some reading—our picks were Waiting for Snow in Havana by Carlos Eire and Havana Nocturne by T.J. English.

hen a couple makes that exciting decision to bring their lives together, it’s inevitable that their financial lives, too, will become intertwined. And while the sentiment that “love conquers all” may overshadow financial concerns early on in the relationship, the reality is that how each partner handles money could have a major impact on their shared financial future. The biggest thing to remember with this big life step is open communication. With that in mind, here are a few key areas that every couple should discuss before merging their finances:
INCOME AND EXPENSES
One of the biggest decisions you should agree on is how much of your income will be directed to individual accounts or to a joint account. Individuals who are used to managing their money may want to maintain their own account or have a separate account for discretionary spending. If this is your preference, discuss who is responsible for each expense. Opening a joint account that both parties contribute to is a common way to pay for shared expenses, like rent or mortgage payments, utilities and food. If you decide only to have a joint account, discuss how you’ll handle discretionary spending. Many couples agree to discuss any purchase made above an agreed-upon amount, so both partners feel involved in the decision. EXISTING DEBTS
If one or both of you is bringing debt to the relationship, such as student loans or credit card debt, it is important to agree how those will be paid off. Will both of you contribute to loan payments, or will the person who brought those debts to the relationship take sole responsibility? Reducing and eventually eliminating these debts should be a priority. EMERGENCY FUND
It’s important to have money saved for emergencies or to fund special opportunities that may come up. A general rule of thumb is to have six-to-nine months of income set aside in a cash account that is easily accessible when the money is needed. Communicate what type of expenses warrant dipping into this fund in order to avoid a potentially stressful situation. FINANCIAL PRIORITIES
Before you merge your finances, talk about your financial goals. Put together a plan that prioritizes each goal and factors in the ideal timeframe for achieving each goal. Also, talk about your spending habits, your approach to saving and how you will resolve disagreements about money. Be upfront about any issues you might have had with money in the past and how that might affect your lives going forward. Putting it all on the table now can help avoid problems related to money matters in the future. AmeripriseAdvisors.com/jacqueline.m.battista
