Growing up on a lake in the midwest, I was a huge fan of the rustic, fishing lodge style of home design. If there wasn’t a dead animal over the stone fireplace, something was not right. I can vividly recall an old lake cabin being torn down across the lake, and being replaced by a contemporary style home. I was furious! How could someone want a white concrete box for a lake home? Fortunately, the more I was exposed to modern design style, the more I have grown to enjoy it. With fall settling in, the temperatures are cooling, leaves are changing, and awesome new beer releases are hitting the market. Throw in fantasy football and stellar mountain biking weather, and this is my favorite season of the year.

TOMECEK STUDIO ARCHITECTURE DOES MORE THAN JUST DESIGN A HOME, THEIR VISION IS TO DESIGN AN OVERALL EXPERIENCE THAT POSITIVELY IMPACTS THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO USE THE HOME. CLIENT + ARCHITECT + TASK + PLACE
B
rad Tomecek, founder and owner of Tomecek Studio Architecture, approaches building in a different way. His boutique design firm operates on the progressive edge of its field. While fundamentally concerned with issues of space, light and texture, it’s underpinned by an exploration of “how to build.” In order to provide creative solutions to specific circumstances, it employs research-driven processes that yield efficient and unique solutions—believing quality is the ultimate measure of value. “We’re more academic than most firms,” says Tomecek, who is no newbie to the world of architecture. For over a decade, he was co-owner and co-founder of Studio H:T before he launched Tomecek Studio Architecture in 2013. He’s also been on the board of directors for AIA Colorado North and AIA Colorado Denver and currently lectures at University of Colorado Denver. Tomecek says, “Construction technology is hundreds of years old, and while other industries have rapidly adopted new fabrication technologies, the fields of architecture and construction have been averse to exploring similar possibilities. In our own small rebellion, we have explored modular prefabrication with shipping containers and wood-frame boxes, panelized prefabrication with Structural Insulated Panels and German eco-panels, and are currently reviewing opportunities to utilize cross laminated timber panels in construction.” The firm also leans heavily on the systems side and openly admits to obsessing about the different natural elements that come into play with how a building will function. “In theory, if you know the answers to how the wind, sun and weather work, the houses almost design themselves … almost,” says Tomecek. With invigorating energy and zeal, the studio visually captures the essence of what clients’ desire, deCONTINUED >

vises a plan and then constructs it using a variety of methods. Most clients want one-of-a-kind, creative structures either commercial or residential. Some projects involve introducing high quality design to a prefabricated factory setting. “One house concept can be based completely on light, while another could be based more on technology,” says Tomecek. “Prefabrication is only a small fraction of our work.” PREFABRICATION
Tomecek Studio Architecture’s approach to prefabrication is one of the many tools it utilizes under the right circumstances, the goal being to marry architecture and design to a manufacturing process in hopes to produce a unique project within an efficient time schedule and effective budget. “In the world, we manufacture tons of things, but housing has never really caught on,” says Tomecek. “You need someone overseeing it with a designer’s eye. It’s about balancing both manufacturing and design worlds.” 32ND STREET MODULAR (SHOWN ON FRONT COVER)
The modular home was conceived as two boxes that slide above one another to create outdoor living space and a lower covered rear entry. Keeping in line with utilizing natural elements, the house’s passive solar design brings in plenty of light from the south while minimizing openings to the east and west. Both time and cost were saved with factory construction built just north of Denver. Eighty percent of the residence was completed in the factory in less than three weeks and other items were finished on site, including the exterior stucco, garage, metal railing and stair. Upgraded lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, doors, door hardware, windows, tile and bamboo flooring were incorporated into the design. It also earned a LEED-Home Pilot certification. Tomecek says, “Stack-Slide-Stitch describes the conceptual process of how to tie together two distinct modular boxes. Stack refers to setting one modular directly on top of the other. Slide refers to the action that creates an upper southern deck area while simultaneously providing a covered rear entry area. The stitching or interlocking occurs with the upward extension of the lower volume with the front deck walls and with the rear, two-story vertical.” 3222 Tejon Street, Studio C Denver 303.955.0562 TomecekStudio.com 18

T
he start of Teakoe Tea is something you may find in a 1980s movie starring Matthew Broderick. The premise? A former professional lacrosse player who used to mix and create his own tea concoctions for him and his team. The plot thickens when they’re all huddled in a locker room raving about the energy they have after drinking the tea and then, BOOM. Matthew Broderick’s character just goes out and starts his business at farmers markets and it just takes off from there. Just replace Matthew Broderick with Pete Jokisch, owner of Teakoe Tea Supply Company, and our Hollywood film comes to life. Pete found a passion for tea during his days with the Colorado Mammoth to help with his energy and the all-encompassing health benefits that come with drinking it. “Guys on the team enjoyed the blends and thought I should start selling them at local farmers markets. Just a few months later I launched Teakoe at the Cherry Creek Farmers Market—and the journey began,” says Pete. Now you can find the small batch from scratch teas across Colorado in some of your favorite eateries, grocery stores and coffee shops from Wynkoop Brewing Company to the Brown Palace Hotel. “Being in Colorado has been instrumental,” says Pete, “Because we have so many entrepreneurial businesses and individuals supporting our efforts.” So how does the tea make it to the bag and then to your cup? They start by purchasing bulk ingredients such as teas, herbs and spices from a number of specialty importers, then blend the ingredients together based on their proprietary recipes, creating fun and unique teas. “Tea for the longest time has been seen as a very traditional beverage,” says Pete. “Early on it was a challenge getting people past that perception, but as we continued to grow, we saw customers really gravitate towards our craft teas and overall brand appeal.” Now that fall is upon us and the leaves begin to change, UGG boots are seen across college campuses and the ski industry gears up for an El Niño season, it’s time to get real with your tea cups. Every fall and winter, Teakoe starts focusing more on their Trailhead Chai collection, which is geared more for the cold weather and enjoyed most while out exploring our fantastic state. If you’re more of an iced tea person whether in snow or on a beach, you’ll love their seasonal iced tea, the Slopeside Spiced Plum. You can purchase Teakoe from their website with most ranging from $6-$10 per pack. Or you can use their site to find a restaurant or retailer near you. Visit Teakoe.com for more details. Now excuse us as we go watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and sip back on some Teakoe in our Halloween pajamas.

at. Sleep. Drink. Art. Repeat. That’s the theme behind the ART—a new, luxury hotel (and city attraction) that’s winning over the hearts of art lovers. Positioned in the center of Denver’s burgeoning cultural scene, the ART’s situated inside the boundaries of Broadway, Speer and Colfax. Being centered in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District, the ART is just a stone's throw away from the Colorado History Center and Denver Art Museum. Literally. Former curator of the Denver Art Museum Dianne Vanderlip recruited the crème de la crème of artists’ work in order to weave thought-provoking pieces throughout the building. Immediately upon arrival, look up to witness a spectacular light show. Here you can view New York-based artist Leo Villareal’s Threshold, an installation combining 22,000 LED light bulbs where no two light combinations are ever the same. Villareal’s also the creator of Bay Lights, a well-known installation that lines San Francisco’s Bay Bridge. This multisensory arrival experience sets the tone for what’s ahead as it welcomes people to the building. You’ll find multiple contemporary pieces are on display inside the first floor, while
check-in on the fourth floor continues the art-going experience. Art is everywhere—at reception, in the hallways and conference rooms, even in the elevators. Each room also comes adorned with art, well lit art at that, a rare find in a hotel room. The hotel’s collection stems from an impressive array of contemporary artists including Ed Ruscha, Deborah Butterfield, Claus Oldenberg, Tracey Emin, Sol CONTINUED >

Sophisticated palates will find their favorite fare in Chef Chris Jakubiec’s “simple, yet polished” entrée options at the hotel’s premier restaurant, FIRE Lounge & Terrace that overlooks the city. The menu honors classic techniques while utilizing Denver’s proximity to locally-grown and sustainably raised foods whenever possible. Like the rest of the hotel, the restaurant and lounge double as an art gallery, with works and installations in multiple areas. Floor-to-ceiling window panels are able to fully disappear during warmer months to create a fluid connection between the Welcome Gallery and FIRE Lounge & Terrace. There’s also plenty of room for creative gatherings and team building with the hotel’s 4,100 square feet of space devoted solely to events, Distinct group programming with an artistic flare is currently being designed. High Design in Denver A closer look at three of Denver's favorite museums of modern art.
ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL Clyfford Still Museum, Photography Raul Garcia
CLYFFORD STILL MUSEUM WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW
As the name implies, this museum features the work of the late American artist, Clyfford Still. Still was a leading figure in the first generation of Abstract Expressionists. This was a new style of painting that evolved right after World War II. His non-figurative paintings largely are composed of juxtaposing different color and shapes, particularly with impasto (thick layers of paint). WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
For at least three decades about 95 percent of Clyfford Still’s work was hidden from the public when he decided to further himself from the art world. Although in 1978, two years before his death, Still left his collection of work and archives with his wife Patricia and stated in his will: “I give and bequeath all the remaining works of art executed by me in my collection to an American city that will agree to build or assign and maintain permanent quarters exclusively for these works of art…” With that being said, Patricia chose Denver in 2004 as the lucky city that would house approximately 3,200 works created by Still from 1920-1980, the majority of which had never been shown to the public eye. The museum now hosts a rotating series of his extensive work and explores his life, career and creativity. “It was no easy feat. Many other cities failed at convincing her,” says Dean Sobel director of the Clyfford Still Museum. “In fact, the Clyfford Still Museum is the world’s most intact public collection of any major American artist. It’s possible to see small collections of Still’s work in Museums in San Francisco and New York, but there is quite literally nothing else on this planet like this museum.” 30

KIRKLAND MUSEUM OF FINE & DECORATIVE ART WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW
Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art displays a total of three collections. • A large collection of international decorative from Arts & Crafts through Modern and now Postmodern (with many styles in-between). • Regional and Colorado artists are shown to demonstrate the importance of Colorado art in the larger spectrum of American Art. • A retrospective of Colorado’s distinguished painter, Vance Kirkland (1904-1981). Kirkland was a known driving force for the modern art movement in Colorado. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vance Kirkland's Studio Workroom
The salon style display method really makes the whole experience intimate and distinctive compared to a typical trip to a museum. The decorative art is in the same galleries as the fine art, vintage furniture is next to various vignettes, and displays are done with more than one art style making it an eclectic experience. “For thousands of years, in castles, mansions and houses, people have placed decorative art together with fine art. Therefore it seems natural to display like this,” says Founding Director and Curator Hugh Grant. CONTINUED >

The exhibit explores the life and artistic style of American painter and photographer Marilyn Minter who currently resides in New York. Minter is a known cultural producer whose images reflect our current times (for better or worse). It’s an interesting display of the artist’s interest and evaluation of fashion, feminism and celebrity throughout her creative career.

ARTFUL ARRANGEMENTS (CONTINUED)
SCULPTOR, JOSHUA PASS MODERN ANTIQUE SCULPTURE
His work is architecturally inspired adornment for space, both functional and non-functional, that is reaction to life, nature and interpersonal communication.a unique way of fusing modern design and material advancements with the simplicity of the past. “Through these visual stories I try to help the viewer feel and notice the balance or imbalance of people’s relation’s to one another and the environment.” ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM, CARLENE FRANCES Her inspiration is drawn from the powerful Asian aesthetics that lives within me, a striving for serenity in a world inundated by input: conscious acts of eliminating the unnecessary so the necessary may speak. Through this inspiration, the work found its own apartness: its own peace. ‘My love for the creative process allows me to seek new ideas, a visual language of self-expression that will inspire others to see the world from a different viewpoint. “ ABSTRACT PAINTER, MARK VILLARREAL JOYFUL AND PLAYFUL
Mark is continuing to explore non-objective abstraction with the use of symbols and mark-making. The use of a lyrical line can be consistently traced throughout the paintings, creating negative space and organic shapes. ”I have been painting and exhibiting work for over three decades building up a collection of shapes, along with an ever-evolving sophisticated palette.” ABSTRACT PAINTER, LISA KOWALSKI BOLD, MINIMAL, CREATIVE, VISUAL EXPLORATIONS
Lisa describes her methods of line and stroke as, “ deliberate, intuitively unidentified.” These explorations evoke sensation in the viewer that are not bounded by the literal, but can be broadly identified as physical, spiritual or psychological. “I am in love with the eloquence of sparseness and everything to do with the act of painting: the smell, the lushness of oil paint, color.”

ABSTRACT PAINTER, MICHAEL KESSLER NATURE-BASED ABSTRACTION
His paintings are mostly about paint and color... An event frozen in time and space... Obviously produced by a human being in love with nature and the act of painting. “I emphasisize on material steeped in the spirit of love and celebration.” ABSTRACT OIL PAINTER, ROBERT STRIFFOLINO INSPIRED BY NATURE
He finds joy and inspiration in the more subtle details in nature, such as wildflowers and grasses. Most of his work falls into three series: waterscapes, tree-forms and garden. “Painting for me, as simply and succinctly as I can say it, is a journey." ABSTRACT PAINTER, MARY MORRISON ABSTRACT, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON COLOR FIELD PAINTING
Inspired by the colors and patterns that surround us, the world of light and color found in nature. Mary’s paintings focus on the interplay of canvas and large areas of color. “ I love the various forms color can take in painting, from thin veils that stain the canvas to denser more opaque, printed forms.” OIL PAINTER, STEVE CIESLAWSKI His technique is based on the 17th Century Dutch Masters. He uses layers and layers of oil glazes to achieve an inner luminosity. He uses symbolism to stimulate the psyche and touch people emotionally. "As an observer of life, to be able to create something that has the ability to transport people visually and touch them on an emotional level, is a profound experience for me". ENCAUSTIC PAINTER, BILL FISHER The encaustic painting technique is also known as hot wax painting, and involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. “I paint in a reductivist manner relying on surface and spatial tensions to convey the content. The imagery in my work is based on childhood memory, appropriated diagrams and reflections of the visual realities of urban decay. My work expresses a continuing dynamic of time, experience, and personal perception. October 2015 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

M
odernist cuisine gets a bad rap. It’s too "out there." The portions are too small. What’s with all the foams? While all of those criticisms can be valid (depending on the restaurant), modernist cuisine can also be extremely inventive, surprising and – most importantly – delicious, when done right. Downtown’s 1515 Restaurant is doing it right. For the uninitiated, modern cooking techniques tend to blend science and food. Often called molecular gastronomy, it uses the principles of chemistry, physics and biology to create amazing food presented in new and interesting ways. While the food may look different – common tricks are to turn everyday edibles into powders, caviar-like beads and, yes, foams – the flavors should still be familiar, just in a different presentation. It’s basically just creative chefs playing with their food. And who doesn’t want to have fun with their dining experience? At 1515, it’s more than just modern. The flavor combinations and dishes are traditional, just with an avant garde spin put on them. Think rack of lamb with tarragon powder, or butter-poached lobster with wasabi foam. It’s food you’re already comfortable with, but with an extra dash of fun. The atmosphere at 1515 has a similar feel to the food – traditional, with a twist. The restaurant, which has been at its namesake location for 18 years, consists of a spacious downstairs bar (one of downtown’s best-kept happy hour secrets) and an upstairs dining room. The dining room has a clean, contemporary feel, but it’s still very warm. It also houses an impressive wine collection, displayed in a wine cellar that separates the main dining room from another large space used for private events. Appetizers are among the menu’s highlights, with the Ishiyaki-style cooking of Colorado 7X Wagyu beef ($19) providing some hands-on entertainment. The beef – almost melt-in-your-mouth buttery if you leave it on the rare side – is served alongside a hot, steaming stone. Set the meat on the stone, add a bit of the accompanying ponzu sauce, and within a minute of sizzling you’ve got a delicious mouthful. Entrees are plentiful and tend to be meat-centric. The Boulder Lamb Trio ($34) features rack of lamb, shoulder and belly with a bean ragout and tarragon powder. 1515 respects their meats, sourcing the best quality products and cooking them just enough to bring out the best flavor. The lamb is no exception, coming out perfectly pink and tender. The Bouillabaisse ($37) has great presentation – liquid nitrogen is poured under the bowl tableside to create a smoky, aromatic platter. Once the smoke has cleared, you’re left with a bowl full of clams, mussels, snapper, lobster and velvety sauce. The sauce is so good that you’ll want to scoop up every last drop. We just wish that the bread was left plain instead of being topped with unnecessary crab. The playfulness extends to the dessert menu, and the flaming Cherries Jubilee ($12) is a standout. The Bing cherry, brown butter caramel ice cream and cinnamon crumble concoction is set afire with Bacardi 151 rum. It’s owner Gene Tang’s favorite dessert, and with good reason. Instead of being modern, cocktails are a throwback, with names like the 1940s Lauren Bacall (sparkling wine and grapefruit) and Picasso Wine Cocktail (merlot, spiced rum, lavender foam and an absinthe rinse). They’re light and well-balanced, but many people come for the wine. After all, 1515 has won Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence every year since 2001. The list is impressive, with an above average by the glass selection. 1515 believes that food should be fun, but still refined and familiar. It’s classic, but with a distinctly contemporary flourish. And what could be more modern than that? October 2015 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

Hammond's Candies LOCAL, HANDMADE, DELICIOUS

here have been many changes of the American lifestyle since the 1920s. Although at Hammond’s Candy factory, many things, including the recipes and machinery, have survived the passage of time. For more than 90 years, Denver has been home to Hammond’s Candies, first founded in 1920 by Carl T. Hammond. “Denver is a great place to make candy, especially hard candies because of the dry climate. We are also able to get most of our ingredients locally which is a big advantage,” says Sales and Marketing Coordinator Anna Abromovich. As Abromovich showed us around the factory, I had no idea that when they say their candy is made by hand, they really mean it. At Hammond’s, each marshmallow is meticulously placed for their famous Mitchell Sweets, dollops of hard candy are stretched and molded into colorful lollipops, and lines of peanut brittle are decorated with chocolate by a flick of the hand. Long story short, every step of the candy production process is done by hand. “Hammond’s is the largest handmade-candy manufacturer in the country. There are very few candy companies that are still making any by hand. It is a lot easier to create millions of candy canes from a machine, but they will not have the look of handmade candy,” says Abromovich. Or the same delicious taste for that matter. Today Hammond’s continues to make their famous lollipops, ribbon candies, and its best-known product: oversized candy canes. “I have heard many people talk about Hammond’s Candy Canes being a tradition in their family for multiple generations,” says Abromovich.
Although throughout the years Hammond’s has also expanded its offerings to include a variety of chocolates, taffy, caramel corn and cotton candy. All made in-house and anyone can stop by for a free tour to see how it’s all made. Making it a perfect outing for kids. “Hammond’s will never switch to machine-made candy, that is what sets us apart and makes us special,” says Abromovich. “I think it is important for us to keep our methods the same, as this is what people know and look for from us.” “Hammond’s will never switch to machine-made candy, that is what sets us apart and makes us special,” says Abromovich. The Future of Cars is the i3 ARTICLE KEELEY MAHANES

ith the rise of energy efficient homes, environmentally conscious clothing, and organically made food, it is no wonder that car companies are adhering to this trend as well. BMW has been on the forefront of producing environmentally-friendly sports cars that maintain their sleek appearance, while also preserving the integrity of the BMW trademark. Unfortunately, many of these beautiful hybrids have a price tag that is impractical for the majority of car owners, but BMW has finally created a cost effective hybrid that appeals to the everyday driver- the i3. The BMW i3 looks different from most cars. At first glance, it’s futuristic façade and interior depict an abnormality that may not be appealing to most people, however the i3 takes pride in its physical differences, boasting modernity, intelligence and boldness with its full carbon fiber cabin and aluminum frame. The i3 is relatively tall and spacious for an electric car with minimal blind spots and maximal space for passengers and luggage. The inside of the i3 is just as aesthetically distinctive with 90 percent being comprised of recycled materials, which includes a bamboo interior trim as well as revolutionary-looking dials. The car’s interior is compounded by two computer screens, while the familiar iDrive system sits between the 46
Cherry Creek Lifestyle | October 2015
two front seats and controls the main screen. With iDrive, the driver can quickly scroll, draw, type and speak in order to find a destination or to control other features within the car. While the unique appearance of the i3 will initially captivate you, it is the environmentally friendly features that will keep you enticed. While most electric cars have one large battery, the i3 has individual ones, which reduces the weight of the car significantly. The individual batteries of the car are located in the center creating a nearly perfect 50/50 weight balance. This practically perfect weight distribution allows the car to handle effortlessly with a very impressive turn radius and a speed that is unmatched by all other electric cars. Weighing in at only 2,800 pounds, the i3 proves to be the fastest and most nimble of full electric cars being sold, allowing it to speed from 0 to 30 mph quicker than even an M3. The i3 is a prime example of the age old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” While the exterior may not appeal to everyone, its speed, swiftness, silence and ability to transport four adults plus luggage comfortably make it a sensible yet alluring option for drivers looking to go green.
