LOOKING FORWARD TO AN EXCITING NEW YEAR
At CCB if you know us, you know everything we do, we do for family. In reflecting on the challenges of 2020 and looking onward, I cannot help but let an assured smile overtake me. I am filled with such encouragement thinking about the strength of our community. We have been separated, isolated, tested and yet, we have endured. I see a closeness being cultivated that fills me with a love and pride I can only describe as “Familial.” No matter our struggles, we continue to find a way not just to survive, but to thrive. A prosperous year is just beginning to take shape. Let us keep encouraging one another as you have encouraged me. This is a record-breaking year for us all; within business, community and most importantly, family. May it be our best year yet!

You're sure to be inspired by these and the other articles featuring your neighbors and local businesses inside this issue. Here's to a bright 2021!

NETFLIX DECKS OUT NORMAN DOWNTOWN Downtown Norman was all decked out for the 2020 holiday season, thanks to the popular streaming service Netflix. Norman was one of several smaller cities selected by the company to have their downtown streets adorned with Christmas lights for Netflix’s “Here for the Holidays” display. A crew began working on the display,

located on the 200 block of East Main Street, on Dec. 9. A spokesperson for Netflix said they only reached out to smaller cities like Norman during the selection process. They said the year has been hard for many people and the holidays bring an opportunity to escape to a joyous time. The event was covered by all the local television services as well as through social media. Several city leaders expressed gratitude to Netflix for selecting Norman and helping make the season a little brighter, including the Downtown Association President Stephen Koranda and Norman Mayor Breea Clark.

KUR K UATH STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, IT IS READILY APPARENT THAT OU’S KUR KUATH IS A POWERHOUSE ON THE COURT. He led the University of Oklahoma Men’s Basketball team in blocks last season, with his 5.8 blocks per 40 minutes ranking him second among Division I players. He came to OU following a successful junior college career, where he netted both regional and District I titles. As a senior in the 2020-21 season, the 6’10” Kuath (pronounced “Kweth”) has no intentions of slowing down and has his sights set on the NBA. “I would love to play professional basketball, and my biggest goal would be to make it to the NBA. I know there are also other options overseas. Depending on how this season goes, it will determine what path I end up on.” Thinking about life after basketball, Kur is excited about using his degree to help other athletes. “It allows me to pursue my interest in therapy,” he explains. “My dream is to help fellow athletes. Being an athlete is very stressful, especially if you are far from home and not able to see your family.” No matter where the next chapter of his life takes him, Kur will treasure his time in Norman. “I love the culture in Norman, and Oklahoma is a great place to be. I’ve been in a position where I’ve had nothing before, so I don’t ever take the little things for granted. I am really grateful for every opportunity I have.”

Transitional memory care is also available for residents who have some memory loss but are still able to live independently in assisted living apartments. Respite care services, in both assisted living and memory care, provide short-term solutions for families that need temporary care. “We have a dedicated apartment available for guests who stay with us for periods of time ranging from three days to 30 days. It’s a great option for families taking vacations, or who want to see how their loved one might enjoy being part of our community. Often, after they see how happy their family member is, they end up moving in!” HarborChase offers both one- and two-bedroom apartments in their assisted living neighborhood, with comparable rates to other facilities in the area. “Just because we are brand-new doesn’t mean it has to cost more,” Willena concludes. “My goal is for each family member to know that their loved one is receiving the best possible care in the most engaging and enjoyable environment. Our facility is truly amazing!”

HOMETOWN HERO (CONTINUED) “It was challenging, to say the least,” McPeek said of his time with the shuttle program. “There are so many different parts, and the process to put them together is so precise, and there’s no room for error, of course. There are literally miles and miles of welds on the shuttle fuel tanks, just as one example. So, it was challenging, but at the same time it was great because of the visibility and importance of what we were doing.” After living in Louisiana for several decades, McPeek and his wife, Sandra, moved to Norman several years ago to be near her daughter and grandson. He had been an inactive member of the American Legion for many years, but decided it was time to become involved. Since March 2018, McPeek has served as an accredited Veterans Service Officer for Norman’s Post, where he works to help veterans and their dependents obtain disability and other benefits. He’s also a big part of its community outreach programs, helps organize the annual Veterans’ Day parade, and serves as the Post’s unofficial photographer. Of his VSO duties, McPeek said, “I feel like I’m contributing to other vets. They’re a group that’s uncared for, especially from Vietnam and some of the more recent conflicts. They have needs that haven’t been met, and it just seemed the Christian thing for me to do at this point.” McPeek said he is fiercely proud of his time in the service, and stays in touch with many of his fellow comrades in arms. “You go through so many things together as a team,” he said. “You make friendships in the military that you just don’t make anywhere else.”

VERY FEW PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY (AND ABROAD) MADE IT THROUGH 2020 UNSCATHED. Even if you and your family managed not to fall ill with COVID-19, it’s likely your business took a hit, or you have had to work from home for a time, and/or your children were forced to stay home when their schools, kindergartens and daycare centers closed. Michael Corrales
For those living in the metro area, an early ice storm in November meant more school closings, widespread power outages and treacherous roadways due to massive overhanging branches that threatened to fall on people, vehicles, homes and businesses alike. Of course, real threats—to life, property and prosperity—surround us in even “good” years. In Oklahoma, we face tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and other natural phenomena, as well as random events such as vehicular accidents, accidental falls at home and burglaries. While there’s no way to totally protect yourself and your family from these and other threats, there is one thing everyone—homeowners, renters, business people, etc.—can do to help mitigate the negative effects. Purchase adequate insurance. Michael “Mike” Corrales with Corrales & Associates Allstate Team has, quite literally, made it his life mission to ensure that an unfortunate situation like a house fire or F-4 tornado doesn’t prove catastrophic for his agency’s clients. This is done by helping each client come up with an affordable, prudent insurance plan to protect their major investments, including policies for the home, auto, motorcycle, boat and/or RV. Corrales & Associates also offers commercial, life and even pet health insurance. Mike established Corrales & Associates in October 2020, but while the agency itself is young, it’s a part of Allstate, which has been a trusted company for almost 90 years. “Our agency’s mission is to make sure that your family is protected like we would protect our very own,” Mike says, adding, “I love being able to help fam-

ilies and protect them from a potential catastrophe.” During the pandemic, Mike and his agency staff have worked closely with clients to help them purchase or maintain insurance policies adequate to cover any possible obligations following a claim but that’s affordable when wages/income has been negatively affected over the short term. Looking at insurance policies in general, Mike says the one that is too often neglected is life insurance.
