INVESTING IN Our Community

Urban Kitchens Celebrates 25 Years

Urban Kitchens proudly celebrates 25 years of excellence in innovative kitchen and bath design and historic renovation. We have seen all the trends from Tuscan to Shabby Chic to Urban Farmhouse to a return to preserving the historic character of homes nearly a century old.

With rising home prices, a move to aging in place has led owners to renovate the homes they have lived in, many for decades. Opening walls to enlarge tiny kitchens, replacing bathtubs with no threshold walk in showers, widening doorways, and adding master suites are a few of the popular options. Adding drama to bland powder baths with fun wallpaper and bold paint choices is one of our favorite ways to add joy to a home.

Over the years, Urban Kitchens has built a reputation for outstanding customer service and a commitment to sustainability, ensuring that every project not only meets but exceeds client expectations. As we reflect on our journey, our team looks forward to continuing to inspire and create beautiful, functional spaces for years to come.

NORMAN NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

I won the South Central Jr. Golf Championship last summer, and I was accepted into the National Honor Society this year.

Personal highlights?

I’m the son of Keith and Jennifer Russ, and I’ve been playing golf since 7th grade. Outside of golf, one of my biggest passions is hunting. I love spending time outdoors with my friends.

How do you maintain balance?

Golf and school have always been my top priorities. My parents have always told me that school comes first, and that’s something I focus on the most. For me, time management is key!

Plans for the future?

My goal is to play golf at a Division I college—that’s been a huge dream of mine since I first picked up a club. I’m also thinking about pursuing a career in business.

Turning Setbacks into Comebacks

NORMAN NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

I’m excited to play #1 singles for Norman North’s girls’ tennis team. Academically, I’ve maintained a 4.0 unweighted GPA while challenging myself with several AP courses, earning the AP Scholar with Distinction award.

Personal highlights?

My parents are Xiao Huang and Min Luo. I play tennis for Norman North High School, but beyond that, I also play the viola and have performed in several state orchestras, including the Oklahoma All-State Orchestra and the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Orchestra. In my free time, I love playing Word Hunt.

How do you maintain balance?

As a student-athlete, I have a pretty demanding schedule. For me, prioritization is key. Academics come first (I have to stay eligible!), so I try to finish most of my assignments at school. That way, I can focus on tennis practice when I get home.

Plans for the future?

I’m interested in attending a college with a strong STEM program and exploring different career opportunities in the field.

TRUE SKY credit union

INVESTMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY OFFER MEMBERS GREATER FLEXIBILITY, FASTER SERVICE AND ENHANCED SECURITY

It’s not your parents’ credit union. Nor is it just any credit union.

Over the past four years, True Sky Federal Credit Union ( TrueSkyCU.org) has invested heavily in technology that is making banking easier, faster and more convenient for its members, as well as giving members more options and control over how they manage their finances.

The new technology also addresses critical security upgrades to address various and ongoing cyber security threats.

“At True Sky, we recognize that banking needs are constantly evolving, so in 2020 we began a complete overhaul of our technology framework to better serve both current and potential members,” said Alex Michaud, True Sky senior vice president and chief information officer.

'ENGINE’ AND CUSTOMER SERVICE UPGRADES

“First and foremost, we upgraded our core account processing system—essentially the ‘engine’ that drives all member account activities. This switch allows us to process transactions faster, streamline internal workflows and ultimately provide a more personalized experience for our members.

“We also implemented new online and mobile banking platforms, carefully integrating added functionalities to give members a truly convenient, user-friendly experience,” Alex added.

“Whether it’s depositing checks, transferring funds, paying bills or monitoring account activity, members can manage their finances from anywhere, at any time, with greater ease and security.”

Another major step forward, Alex notes, has been the rollout of Interactive Teller Machines, which combine the convenience of an ATM with the personalized service of a live teller. The ITMs offer extended service hours, and members can speak directly to a True Sky associate via video link to handle virtually any transaction they could at a branch.

“Ultimately,” he added, “every one of these investments—modernizing our core, enhancing our digital platforms and introducing ITMs—reflects True Sky’s commitment to meeting you wherever you feel most comfortable, whether that’s in-person at one of our branches, online

From left: Kevin Carrel, Board of Directors; Alex Michaud, SVP/CIO; Stefy Tomlin, VP of innovation; Terry Davidson, Board of Directors

through your smartphone or computer, or even just by picking up the phone.

“We believe that by embracing innovation and staying agile, we can deliver the best possible financial solutions to our members now and into the future.”

KEEPING DATA SECURE

Asked about how the credit union has addressed the issue of keeping sensitive member information secure, Alex stated, “Security is at the heart of everything we do at True Sky.”

“We allocate a significant portion of our technology budget to safeguarding member data, and we have rigorous systems in place to protect against cyber threats,” he explained.

“Our critical systems are monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and we’re regularly audited to ensure compliance with industry-leading security standards. We also stay proactive by partnering with cybersecurity experts, deploying advanced threat detection tools, and continuously testing our defenses to stay ahead of emerging risks.”

Pretty impressive, but that’s only the start.

“Technology alone isn’t enough—we believe informed members are our first line of defense,” Alex said. “That’s why we invest in comprehensive education around the latest fraud and phishing techniques, empowering our members to identify and avoid potential scams.

“By combining state-of-the-art infrastructure with ongoing community education, we strive to create a secure banking environment where our members can have peace of mind every time they manage their finances.”

MEANINGFUL INNOVATION

With the significant technological advances implemented over the past four years, some businesses might call it done, at least for a time. But the leadership at this credit union isn’t willing to sit on its laurels, basking in customers’ praise (though they are happy to receive it!).

“At True Sky, we believe that meaningful innovation is about anticipating our members’ needs before they even arise,” said Vice President of Innovation Stefy Tomlin.

“Our Innovation Department constantly analyzes data and trends to understand how our members prefer to bank, and then seeks out the cutting-edge solutions that will best serve them— whether it’s through developing new digital channels or perfecting in-person experiences.”

Currently, Stefy said, they are rolling out video banking services accessible through any internet-connected device, which will make it easier than ever for members to connect with a knowledgeable True Sky representative from wherever they are.

“We’re also integrating member-facing AI tools designed to provide quick answers and assistance—offering 24/7 access to information and reducing wait times for routine inquiries,” she said.

“Beyond our own walls, we collaborate with leading industry think tanks across the country, sharing insights and testing emerging technologies. These partnerships help us stay at the forefront of financial innovation, ensuring that our services not only keep pace with evolving member expectations, but also set new standards for convenience and personalization.

“In short, our focus to become a ‘technology company with purpose’ is about blending human expertise with the

latest technology so our members can enjoy secure, efficient and personalized banking experiences—today and in the years ahead.”

The technological upgrades implemented by the credit union in the past few years also will be used by True Sky to create efficiencies and open up new avenues to grow and thrive, Stefy said.

“By leveraging advanced data analytics and member-focused AI tools, we’re able to understand our members’ needs more deeply and deliver products and services that genuinely resonate,” she explained.

“That better alignment between what we offer and what our members want fosters loyalty, attracts new membership and ensures True Sky can continue to invest in cutting-edge solutions.”

And as True Sky grows, so does its ability to support the communities it serves.

“Healthy growth means we can invest in local branches, hire more talent and contribute resources to neighborhood initiatives—ultimately fueling the economic vitality of the areas around us. By empowering our members to manage their finances securely and efficiently, we help build stronger, more financially confident communities for everyone,” Stefy said.

SUPPORTING SMALLER CREDIT UNIONS AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES

Supporting smaller credit unions and the surrounding communities “is deeply woven into True Sky’s core identity, which is grounded in the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people,’” said CEO Sean Cahill.

He explains: “Smaller credit unions often have fewer resources to invest in technology and infrastructure upgrades, making it harder for them to compete with larger financial institutions. By lending a hand—whether through shared services, collaborative partnerships or strategic guidance—True Sky helps these credit unions thrive so they can continue providing critical financial services to their local communities.

“We feel that small credit unions, serving very specific subsets of the community are the lifeblood of the credit union ‘movement’. Rising technology costs and competition from larger credit unions are threatening their existence. In 2024, True Sky opened its new state-of-the-art data center. One of the purposes for this building is to be able to provide affordable technology solutions to these smaller institutions, therefor prolonging their ability to provide valuable services to their membership.”

On a broader level, True Sky is heavily invested in each community it serves. The credit union currently

“At True Sky, we believe that meaningful innovation is about anticipating our members’ needs before they even arise.”

has branches serving a large part of the OKC metro and beyond: Oklahoma City (four locations), Norman, Edmond, Newcastle, Mustang, Midwest City, Yukon, Chandler and Davenport. That’s not counting the shared service centers.

“We’ve built a food bank on 23rd Street, partnered with New Bethel Baptist Church to create a community center for their patrons, and donated a building in Davenport, Oklahoma, to support a Head Start program.

Through the True Sky Foundation, we also contribute annually to the Children’s Miracle Network to support pediatric health care,” Sean noted.

“These are just a few examples of how we channel resources into projects that make a positive impact—nurturing not only the financial well-being of our members but also the overall health and vitality of the neighborhoods we serve.”

It’s a win-win situation.

“Ultimately, when we lift up smaller credit unions and invest in community initiatives, everyone benefits,” Sean explained. “Local economies grow stronger, essential services reach those who need them most and the overall cooperative spirit of ‘people helping people’ continues to flourish.”

THE BOTTOM LINE

“Our technology investments bring tangible benefits for the credit union’s members on multiple levels,” Sean said.

“The most immediate impact is greater flexibility,” he explained. “Whether they’re depositing checks through their phone, using an Interactive Teller Machine for extended service hours or chatting with a representative via video banking, they have more control over how—and when—they manage their finances.

“This convenience goes hand-in-hand with a more seamless, personalized experience, helping people save time and focus on what matters most in their lives.”

True Sky may not be your parents’ credit union, but they may want to join.

‘ACE’ YOUR NEXT CELEBRATORY EVENT

ACE PARTY SUPPLIES & SHOWTIME

CONCESSION: YOUR ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR PLANNING MEMORABLE PARTIES

Parents invest in their children in many ways: providing the staples of life (food, shelter, etc.); their education, including not only their formal education, but also extracurricular activities; insurance; medical and dental care; and so on.

Those investments have both tangible and nontangible “pay offs” … as a parent, your “lists” may differ from others and, indeed, may evolve as baby grows into child, then into teenager, then young adult…

Ace also offers plenty of concession stand supplies.
“We have partnered with many organizations and nonprofits to help support our community and give back to our supporters, and we continue to remind our community to shop local and support small business.”

Parties—celebrations of all sizes and shapes—are one way we celebrate our “investments” milestones. Whether you’re planning for a baby shower, birthday, graduation or other celebratory event, you’re in luck if you live in Cleveland County and Oklahoma City, home to one of this area’s only party, concession and balloon stores.

We asked Mara English, owner of Ace Party Supplies & Showtime Concession (AcePartySupplies.com), to talk a bit about what they have to offer those planning for graduation celebrations, as well as details on the store.

Q.  WE'RE COMING UP ON GRADUATION TIME. WHAT DO YOU OFFER EVENT PLANNERS?

A. We have custom high school-printed items for nine local high schools (Oklahoma City, Moore, Norman and Edmond), and are adding to this list every year! We offer a large selection of graduation party and decor supplies. And we have the ability to create custom balloon decor for graduation ceremonies, parties and celebrations, large or intimate.

Q. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE STORE?

A. ACE stands for 'Always Celebrate Everything,' and I believe there is always something to celebrate! Ace Party Supplies & Showtime

Mara English takes her dogs, Miss Hudson, a silver chocolate lab, and Miss Mina, an American terrier German shepherd mix, with her to the Moore store every day.
“ACE stands for ‘Always Celebrate Everything,’ and I believe there is always something to celebrate!”

Concession has been serving the community since early 2018. We are the Oklahoma City area's largest locally owned, woman-owned party and concession supply store. In our 9,000-square-foot-plus store, you’ll find balloons, birthday supplies, theme parties, and concession equipment and supplies (popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, nachos, etc). We also carry the largest selection of balloons and offer delivery services throughout the metro. We will even inflate balloons that are brought in or purchased elsewhere.

Additionally, we offer 10% discount days off party supplies (with ID), along with specials on Military and First Responder Mondays, Teacher, Student and Support Staff Tuesdays, and Senior Wednesdays. With the closing of Party City, a lot of families will be wondering where to go locally for party supplies and balloons, and we are here to help in every way we can!

Q. AS THIS IS OUR INVESTMENT ISSUE, COULD YOU TALK ABOUT HOW YOU ARE INVESTED IN THE COMMUNITY?

A. We work very closely with our community, helping schools with everything from popcorn days to spirit weeks. We have give-back programs where we donate up to 25% of sales to organizations

and nonprofits. Have a local bulletin board in the store to help share announcements and news from industry partners and other small business owners. We have partnered with many organizations and nonprofits to help support our community and give back to our supporters, and we continue to remind our community to shop local and support small business.

Q.  CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND?

A. I’m originally from Oklahoma, moved away as a child and then moved back in 2015. I have always loved being involved in my community and in helping create happy moments. My husband, Mike, and I also own Waters Edge Winery in Moore, and appreciate the opportunity to bring new experiences to our guests and customers.

Q. WHAT, NOT COVERED ABOVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT YOURSELF/ THE BUSINESS?

A. Our shop’s success reflects our customers’ successes; we love helping them plan celebrations that will create lasting memories. I’d also like to share a piece of advice for anyone planning a party: Find a theme or a couple of decorations that excite you, then plan around those!

Firehouse Art Center

Invest in Yourself - People of All Levels of Skill Welcomed

Most people spend their lives investing in their families, their work and their community. However, they often forget to invest in themselves.

The Firehouse Art Center has been investing in the community for decades, and they offer a myriad of creative opportunities for individuals of any skill level to take some time exploring the arts.

“We are beginner-friendly,” said Nikki Krumwiede, programs coordinator for the Firehouse Art Center.

“People come for one class and then come back over and over again. They make friends in class and then take other classes together—it’s a great place to network with artistic people.”

Through innovative programming, the Firehouse Art Center continuously reevaluates its course offerings to meet the community’s interests. Glass and jewelry classes always fill quickly, but the subject matter varies greatly from there.

A painting class may focus on landscapes, people, multimedia, animals or abstract designs. Other offerings include photography, pottery, drawing, crocheting, sculpting, calligraphy and paper arts. Classes are offered in four- and eight-week courses, with additional, shorter workshops that usually take place on weekends.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Classes may be skill-level restricted, but most offer individuals of any interest or skill level the opportunity to start and try their hand at a new art.

“It’s not about perfection; it’s about the process,” Krumwide said. “Art allows individuals to learn a new skill, but they also get to express themselves in ways that they might never previously have had.”

There is a post-COVID movement for empty nesters to get out of the house, learn something new, and engage with others faceto-face. Investing in a community art center through courses, art exhibitions and art events allows individuals to make new friends, explore new skills that they are interested in at their own pace, and positively engage in their community.

“Investing in yourself expands what you believe is possible,” said Tricia Edwards, artist and international inner flow guide.

The Firehouse Art Center has been investing in the community for decades.

“Whether learning a skill that fuels your imagination or flexing it through creative expression, you break free from rigid thinking and open doors to new opportunities. By strengthening your capacity for curiosity, imagination and expression, you ‘unlimit your beliefs,’ your choices and the life you never knew was possible.”

The Firehouse Art Center offers art courses and events for children and parents/ children. They haven’t forgotten Fido and Fluffy, either, hosting events that feature and benefit pets.

“We are a community resource,” Krumwiede said. “We welcome anyone to come by; pop your head in and see what is going on and how you can get involved. We love meeting new people and showing them around the Firehouse.”

For anyone who is ready to start giving back, the Firehouse Art Center offers several

opportunities to invest in the community. Individuals can volunteer in classes, at art events or at the Healing Studio—for individuals who are differently abled. If a person is artistically inclined, they might want to teach a workshop, and if the response to their workshop is positive, they might be asked to teach a course.

Other opportunities to get involved in community arts include Art Forces, a free program for veterans and active service members; Zoo Sketch, where individuals learn about drawing through sketching animals at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens; Equality Club, dedicated to promoting equality through the creative expression of visual arts; and Art After School, which offers a delightful array of creative courses for children of all ages. Spending time in any creative endeavor is key to a well-balanced lifestyle. Expressing yourself, learning new skills, making and sustaining relationships in a positive community culture, and giving back are all integral to destressing, exploring your community and investing in the most important person in your life—you.

A list of events and courses is available at the Firehouse Art Center, 444 S. Flood Ave. in Norman, or online at NormanFirehouse.com.

CERTIFIED PA AMANDA BOYD HEADS UP NEW BONE HEALTH CLINIC

Bone-a-fide Excellence

Bottom left: Physician associate Amanda Boyd with husband Chris, daughter Presley, and son Marshall Bottom right: Amanda Boyd heads Ortho Central’s new Bone Health Clinic.
““Osteoporosis by itself is a silent disease, but very deadly.”

Ortho Central has expanded its patient care yet again through a new Bone Health Clinic, under the direction of Amanda Boyd, board-certified physician associate.

Boyd took the helm of the clinic in early January, and said she is dedicated to not just treating patients but also helping them learn about and prevent bone-related diseases. She noted that half of all adults over age 50 have experienced bone loss, and it is one of the least recognized health issues in the general public.

Boyd originally had worked as a clinic and human resources manager, with several members of her current team in a different capacity. After several years, however, the urge to provide more tangible, direct patient assistance became overwhelming.

That’s when she returned to school, earning her degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center’s Physician Associate program. Transitioning away from her established HR career was an unexpected change, but a welcome one.

“I chose to go back for a few reasons,” Boyd said. “As a first-generation college student, I have always been driven by the desire to pursue an advanced degree. I chose to become a physician associate not only to make my family proud and to show my children that it is never too late to chase your dreams, but also to make a meaningful impact on my community through health care.

“This path allows me to combine my personal aspirations with a deep commitment to improving the well-being of those around me.”

During this period of time, Boyd also suffered a tremendous loss in losing her dad to prostate cancer.

“It was a pivotal moment for me,” she said. “Going through this experience made me want to be better educated and more prepared to care for and support my family, friends and a greater patient population in the future. My dad and I had many conversations before he passed about my dream of becoming a PA. I know that if he were still here with us, he would be proud that I was able to accomplish this goal. I am incredibly fortunate to have a team of family that supports me with my mom, husband, kids (and previously my dad) being my biggest cheerleaders.”

Boyd noted that bone loss, especially in older people, can occur as the result of hormonal deficiencies, medications, endocrine diseases and other factors—well beyond a simple lack of calcium. Genetics, along with lifestyle choices such as smoking, heavy drinking and a sedentary lifestyle, can also contribute to bone loss-related issues.

“Bone health issues are often overlooked,” she said. “There is a significant need for earlier screenings across both sexes. While osteoporosis is commonly thought of as a women’s disease, it also greatly affects men. For individuals over 45 with any risk factors, screening is strongly recommended to detect potential issues early and implement preventive measures whenever possible.

“Osteoporosis by itself is a silent disease, but very deadly,” she added. “In women, the total death rate from osteo-related fractures is larger than the number of breast, cervical and ovarian cancers combined. In men, the lifetime risk of fragility fracture is greater than that of prostate cancer.

She said approximately 300,000 hip fractures occur in the United States every year, and that about 50% of those who suffer a hip fracture never regain their previous function. However, if these individuals had been screened, made aware of potential risks and educated on fracture prevention, those numbers would likely be much lower.

Boyd and her clinic team work closely with sports medicine doctors and orthopedic surgeons, plus primary care physicians, to offer personalized, multidisciplinary care for each specific patient. Among the services her clinic provides are multiple levels of osteoporosis management, bone density testing, risk assessments, fracture prevention strategies, and treatment for Vitamin D and calcium deficiencies crucial to bone strength, plus exercise and lifestyle counseling.

"Beyond my passion for patient care, the reason I re-joined the Ortho Central team is because I’ve had the privilege of working with them before, and they are like family to me,” she shared.

“In addition to their exceptional professional skills, our providers uphold the highest standards of integrity, morals and values—qualities that I feel are crucial when it comes to delivering the best patient care.

The Ortho Central Bone Health Clinic is located at 3400 Tecumseh Road, Suite 305, within the West Professional Building. More information is available at NormanRegional.com/locations/ortho-centralbone-health-clinic/ or by calling 405.515.8094.

Outside the office, Boyd said she spends time with her family, which includes husband Chris Boyd, a business owner and consultant. The two are parents to a son, Marshall, who’s a junior at OU, and daughter, Presley, a senior at Norman North High School. She enjoys cooking, baking, running, working out, playing guitar, and hosting get-togethers with friends and family.

“I believe in a holistic approach, in both my professional and personal life,” she said. “It reflects my dedication to health, wellness and building meaningful relationships.”
