Here's to Your Heart!
FEBRUARY 2016 publisher
Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@LifestylePubs.com
Well here we are approaching the zenith of the holiday season. As I write this two days before Christmas and nine days before the New Year, there is plenty going on—almost too much—lots of fun stuff, while also madly wrapping up year-end business. As February is American Heart Month, the subjects of stress, diet and lack of exercise come to the forefront. As much fun as the holiday season offers, these busy times make it too easy to overdo everything as we're rushing around trying to fit 10 pounds of activity into a 5-pound bag, all while eating and drinking too much. Walking this path for too long may lead to high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. To prevent heart attack or stroke, we can follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidelines: • CONTROL YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE While high blood pressure is often asymptomatic, more than 67 million Americans have high blood pressure, making it a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. • JOIN THE MILLION HEARTS® CAMPAIGN This national effort aims to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the United States by 2017, raising awareness about high blood pressure and how to keep it under control. • GET IT CHECKED Having your blood pressure checked regularly is important and easy. Doctors' offices and drugstores offer screenings, and you can even check it yourself at home with a home blood pressure monitor. • WORK WITH YOUR HEALTH CARE TEAM Ask your doctor what your blood pressure should be, and if it's not on target, set a goal to lower it with tips from your doctor and health care team to ensure you meet that goal. • MONITOR AND TREAT Track your blood pressure frequently and take any prescribed medication as directed. • QUIT SMOKING! It goes without say, if you don't smoke, don't start! Smoking cessation tips and resources are online at CDC's Smoking and Tobacco website. • REDUCE SODIUM Too much sodium can raise blood pressure. Find heart-healthy, lower-sodium recipes, meal plans and helpful articles at the Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Resource Center. Here’s to your healthy heart and a long life…L’chaim!!

Casual Fine Dining. You’re Always Welcome. WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND CUISINE?
Back in New Zealand, whether surrounded by the backdrop of the Auckland harbour or the rolling hills of green grass and the smell of feijoa trees, locals are accustomed to fresh and organic meals at home and at the local restaurants. In one of Auckland City’s top restaurants or at the nearby pizza bar, dining out is not just another outing but a oneof-a-kind experience complete with top quality ingredients, beautifully plated dishes, and most importantly, an environment designed for the laid back Kiwi lifestyle. Many restaurants flaunt their trustworthy kitchens with open passes, allowing the customers to view the chefs from their seats. While a typical United States kitchen relies on pepper and other strong seasonings, the Kiwi chef prepares dishes designed to emphasize the natural flavor of the food and allow those flavors to pop.
ORGANIC, FRESH, & ALLERGY FRIENDLY.
Our menu consists of locally sourced handgrown and predominantly organic produce; free-range and grass-fed organic meats; and fresh seafood that’s flown in directly from New Zealand and served less than 48 hours fresh out of the water. Our kitchen and waitstaff are dedicated to providing a welcoming and safe environment for guests with allergies and dietary restrictions. Whether you’re gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, or otherwise, our chefs are always happy to accomodate you without sacrificing the flavors of the dish.

ore than 20 million Americans have trouble seeing, even with glasses, and that number is expected to more than double by the year 2050, says the National Eye Institute. Aging, poor diet, and lack of exercise are taking their toll on our eyesight, but there is hope in improving our vision of tomorrow. Dr. Stuart Stoll, noted ophthalmologist and chairman of the nonprofit Center for the Partially Sighted, believes this disturbing trend can be slowed dramatically with early, proper diagnoses, better health habits, and counseling with trained professionals. A Westlake Village resident, Dr. Stoll grew up in the Los Angeles area with elderly parents and saw firsthand how age and other factors affected health. When he enrolled at the University of Southern CalARTICLE KEN PHILLIPS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED ifornia, he focused on gerontology, intent upon becoming a physician. While an undergraduate at USC, he learned about the Center for the Partially Sighted and studied under Dr. David Boyer, one of the top eye surgeons in the country. Inspired by his experiences at the Center, Dr. Stoll obtained his medical degree and later become Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Wishing to specialize even further, he completed an additional year of fellowship training under Dr. Howard Gimbel, an internationally known authority in the field of cataract and refractive surgery. In 2001, Dr. Stoll returned to California and began his practice in the Los Angeles area. As a highly regarded ophthalmic surgeon, he also has a passion for teaching and discovering innovative ways to train others. One of the ways he gives back is through the Center for the Partially Sighted, where he had previously interned. Now serving his second term as Chairman of the Center’s Board of Directors, Dr. Stoll strives “to enhance the lives of those with vision impairment by allowing them to function more independently, remain productive, and even pursue their dreams.” Treating some 2,400 individuals annually, many of whom have had eye surgeries and continue to experience sight loss, Dr. Stoll and the Center work to maximize the vision people still have to improve their lifestyles as much as possible through psychological assessment and therapy, help with physical navigation, evaluation and training with low-vision magnifying devices, and other services. “The key to better vision is to take care of the body, which will take care of your eyes," says Dr. Stoll. DR. SHARON CROWDER DDS IN ASSOCIATION WITH diabetes, and related conditions can be mitigated with proper diet, exercise, and regular checkups. Even wearing sunglasses can help.” Dr. Stoll supports the nonprofit Center, sharing his expertise and guiding the organization, while acknowledging their work only reaches a limited number of people, just scratching the surface of the need. “We’re at the perfect storm,” says Dr. Stoll. “The largest population segment—the Baby Boomers—are reaching the ages where more vision loss is likely. There is a surge in diabetes caused by poor food choices. People are not exercising as they should. Glaucoma is going unchecked. All of these factors contribute significantly to ocular health and must be addressed.” While the low-vision population is growing exponentially, the economy has also made it more difficult to obtain funding to support the Center’s efforts. With five locations in the Los Angeles and Santa Barbara areas, the Center is also needed in other communities, like the Conejo Valley. “As a nonprofit, part of our job is to help streamline costs, while seeking contributions from many sources, including foundation and government grants, public and private donations, fundraisers, and other means," Dr. Stoll notes. "We need more financial support in serving the ever-growing, low-vision population.” When he's not practicing medicine or strategizing with the Center, Dr. Stoll looks to build a better vision—literally. His passion for improving sight has led him to develop several patents that are already providing greatly enhanced surgical training methods. One device, the SimulEYE, presents some 12 models of the eye for ophthalmology residents to use in developing their surgical techniques and practicing skills. Dr. Stoll’s busy schedule is eased somewhat when he retreats to his North Ranch home with his wife, Mendy, and 5-year-old son, Eli. He also enjoys skiing, mountain biking, traveling, and working on his sports car. For additional information on eye care and treat-

Peace of Mind for Pet Owners ARTICLE CONEJO VALLEY LIFESTYLE
T
aking a vacation or work trip sans pets is so much easier when you know they're happy and in good hands. Pet owners find that peace of mind at Paw Hills Luxury Pet Hotel & Spa in Agoura Hills. The 100% full-service facility offers the finest accommodations, organic food and spa treatments for your pets. Providing boarding, grooming, training, day care, a social club for dogs in training and puppy/kitten adoptions, Paw Hills' knowledgeable staff care for your pet's every need. Paw Hills' owner talks about the business. Q. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR PAW HILLS? WHAT IS YOUR MISSION?
A. I started this operation because of my love of animals. My mission was then and is now to ensure that every pet owner has a safe environment to send their furry child to while they are away so they don’t have to worry. This allows them some peace of mind. Plus we enjoy it! Q. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS OR WAS THIS SOMETHING THAT GREW FROM YOUR LOVE OF ANIMALS?
A. I went to Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, a school that specializes in business, so yes, I always knew that I would operate my own business and because of my love and passion for animals, I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else. I have an extensive back18
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | February 2016
ground in this field, which only adds to the love I have for this industry and my work. Q. PAW HILLS OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF SERVICES. CAN YOU OUTLINE A NORMAL DAY FOR US?
A. It starts off with morning walks and feeding. Then we plan for any grooming that needs to be done so there is enough time that they are properly groomed for the arrival of their parents. Then we do all of the personal play times. Of course, there are drop offs all day, so the lobby is very busy and full of people and furry family members. My staff is in and out of the accommodations all day to ensure that all of our guests are happy and getting the attention that they deserve. Then we do more walks and play times again, feed dinner and then evening walks. At the end of the day, we set up for the next day while all of our guests are sleeping in their rooms.
Q. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER LUXURY PET LOCATIONS?
A. We have a variety of accommodations, including a special division for seniors and special needs. We have a great crew and a few of our employees are going to school to be vet techs, so that sets us apart. The care factor is in everything we do. If an owner forgets their leash, we have one. If they need food, we have it. We have great recommendations and a great wealth of knowledge about what is available and good for their pets. Plus, our wide range of services makes it very convenient for every owner. We make it as comfortable for every pet as possible, after all, they are our guests! Q. WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE THING PET OWNERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THEIR FURRY CHILD’S STAY AT PAW HILLS?
A. Our hotel packages are tailored and if for some reason they can’t be in Day Care during the day, well, that would be adjusted and their pet would have their own room and maybe some personal play time with a staff member if the owner chooses that. We offer a full range of hotel, day care, grooming and training services for dogs and cats, as well as anesthesia-free teeth cleaning by two vet techs supervised by a vet with an ultrasonic machine to clean the front and back of the teeth of dogs and cats.

Some of the incredible scenery of the Sacred Valley.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COLIN ROOHAN
P
eru is a beautiful country where the topography varies drastically. When I flew into mountainous Cusco from coastal Lima, the beauty (and the altitude) took my breath away! My tour visited some of the popular towns and archaeological sites in and around what is called the Sacred Valley, which runs from Machu Picchu to Urcos along the Urubamba River in the south-central region of Peru. This valley encompasses a large area, so trying to pick a feasible number of destinations within the valley can be daunting. I had an incredible itinerary, including the ancient city of Cusco, the colonial settlement of Chinchero, the agricultural sites of Maras and Moray, the small yet busy Machu Picchu Pueblo, and, of course, Machu Picchu itself. Perhaps the best place to start exploring the area around the Sacred Valley is from the once capital city of the Incas, Cusco. Cusco is a beautiful city wherein the locals have a strong link to their Inca

ancestors, as most structures are literally built on top of old Inca foundations. Central Cusco seems like a complex maze of streets and alleys, but it is surprisingly easy to navigate on foot. The Plaza de Armas is both scenic and centrally located, making it a great place to start exploring Cusco. One structure that shouldn’t be missed is the La Catedral (and the attached Church of Jesus Maria). The ornate cathedral that was built in the 1500s is a great example of the Spanish religious influence in the region. Another Spanish influence is the Portal de Panes—a covered area of sidewalk surrounding the plaza, where numerous handicraft shops and relaxing cafes offer views overlooking the plaza. It makes for an ideal place to sit and have a drink or simply people watch. Leaving Cusco, driving through the Sacred Valley was incredible; the Andes provide a dramatic backdrop and the random live-

stock make you feel miles from civilization. We made stops at the Moray agricultural and ceremonial tiered ruins and at the breathtaking, centuries-old Salinas salt pans, but the most moving local experience was our stop at the Chinchero Weaving Cooperative. As we entered the collective I felt bombarded by color. Some 25 women of varying ages worked on some type of loom. The woman who greeted us also gave us a very engaging presentation that explained how these women create such stunning, intricate pieces. We learned how the alpaca and llama wool are turned into yarn, how the yarns are dyed, and how some of the looms operate. It was a thought-provoking presentation and the women working at the cooperative were so welcoming and kind. I later learned that Chinchero means “Village of the Rainbow,” a perfect name and quite befitting of my experience. The next stop was the town of Aguas Calientes, or what is now called Machu Picchu Pueblo. As I stepped off the train in Aquas Calientes, I was immediately surprised by the change in climate; the chilly breezes vanished and made way for a mask of humid air and a continuous sequence of fog and cloud seemed to roll through the small town perched above the Rio Aquas Calientes. The town itself is rather small and can be explored on foot in a couple of hours. Judging by a conversation we had with locals, most people only spend one night in the town. It is a beautiful quaint town, but when you’re standing in the shadow of a giant (Machu Picchu), it’s tough to truly shine as an attraction. Additionally, Machu Picchu Pueblo is a challenging place to get to, which only adds to the allure of Machu Picchu. On the day we were to visit Machu Picchu, I awoke early and joined the queue for the buses that drive up to Machu Picchu around 5 a.m. With a bus full of almost palpable anxiety, we ascended for the next twenty minutes, traversing one switchback after another into a thick blanket of clouds. We arrived at the entrance and made our way over to what is known as the Viewing Platform. Despite some light rain and overcast skies, the ruins of Machu Picchu looked glorious. My tour guides gave a very informative tour and I learned a lot about the former residents of the Citadel. However, after hearing about Hiram Bingham and the 11-year-old boy who led him around the area that first time, I had a hard time replacing that image in my head. We spent a few hours walking around, giving us time to see all the angles of the complex. This incredible place moves everyone in a different way and is a rare gem of magnificent ingenuity that truly is a wonder.

Hard of Hearing? CONEJO HEARING CENTER MAKES LISTENING EASIER
Christine Wilson, Conejo Hearing Center Owner & Audiologist
ARTICLE CONEJO VALLEY LIFESTYLE
H
earing loss can affect quality of life and left untreated, may lead to isolation, frustration and even dementia. Conejo Hearing Center aims to improve lives by providing appropriate solutions for hearing impairments and caring for each patient like a family member. The compassionate staff works with patients to diagnose and treat hearing issues, using the latest equipment and years of experience. Conejo Hearing Center Owner and Audiologist Christine Wilson provides answers to the most frequently asked questions about hearing loss. Q: WHEN SHOULD I GET MY HEARING TESTED?
A: It is a very good idea to have a baseline of your hearing as part of your health records. This should be done as a young adult, especially by the age of 40 or 50. Then as any changes occur, they can be detected and monitored. Genetics and the degree of noise we have been exposed to in our lifetime are the most common contributing factors. In addition, there are other reasons that hearing may change besides advancing age. Many insurance plans cover a hearing evaluation and Medicare covers an annual test as part of their healthy program. Q: HOW DO I KNOW I NEED HELP WITH MY HEARING?
A: The first signs of hearing decline can start as early as our 40s, but become
more significant in our 60s and 70s. Usually the ability to hear in quiet and closed environments is fine, but the difficulty understanding in the presence of background noise and hearing people talk from a distance are the first signs that our hearing may be declining. Also, the television may be turned up louder and hearing on the telephone is more difficult. Q: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START USING HEARING DEVICES?
A: The best time to start is when a person begins to feel frustrated in certain listening environments. The goal of using devices is to ease the communication process and reduce the mental strain that can come from having to work harder at understanding. Sometimes it’s friends or family members who notice the changes first. This is common, as decline in hearing is often a slow process for most people and can feel very normal to them. Untreated hearing loss can also contribute to isolation and depression in the individual. Since social isolation is a known risk factor for dementia and other cognitive disorders, emerging 32

studies show a link between untreated hearing loss and dementia. It’s good brain health to stimulate our hearing nerve pathways as they can and should be. Q: WHERE SHOULD I GO TO BE EVALUATED FOR MY HEAR-
ING? THERE ARE SO MANY ADVERTISEMENTS TODAY!! A: A physician recommendation is a good place to start, or look for an audiologist’s office, which is a licensed hearing professional. Audiologists are trained in the science of hearing as well as the evaluation and appropriate fitting of hearing devices. Our office gives a free trial of hearing devices, with no obligation to purchase. This is the best way for someone to make an educated decision about whether hearing devices can provide the benefit you are looking for. Today’s digital technology results in very successful and significant improvement in one’s communication ability. An experienced audiologist can help you select the right solutions for you and your listening needs. Bluetooth connectivity also allows for easier phone conversations and listening to the television. Cabrillo Music Theatre's Children of Eden a Family Affair ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN
C
onejo Valley audiences are in for a treat this spring with Cabrillo Music Theatre's production of Children of Eden April 8-17 at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. In today’s pop-culture environment, filled with reality shows and one-liners, it’s challenging to find family-friendly entertainment that will spark meaningful conversation and appeal to multiple generations. Cabrillo Music Theatre’s production of Children of Eden will do all of that, and more. Children of Eden's combination of music, dance and storytelling makes it a contemporary and vibrant story for all ages. "It's one of those stories that you can apply to your own life, no matter how old you are,” says Maureen Feldman, Cabrillo’s Director of Development and Communications. “Over the years we’ve discovered this community really responds to family-friendly entertainment that can be experienced together. This production is absolutely for them and we’re betting it will exceed all of their expectations. We invite families to bring their kids, parents, grandparents, and friends. If they liked Wicked, they're going to love this," says Feldman, highlighting the production's powerful musical score. Composed by Stephen Schwartz, of Wicked, Godspell and Pip34
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | February 2016
pin fame, Children of Eden tells the story of the first 10 chapters of Genesis. The stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel and Noah's Ark address universal themes about parents and children, love, faith and choices. This contemporary and timeless production combines humor, romance, drama and heart into a unique theatrical event. “When we present songs from Children of Eden at community events, I’ve witnessed grown men and women drying their eyes. Schwartz’s lyrics have a universal appeal and his melodies are so moving they stir the senses in a very beautiful and touching way. We're so excited to introduce this beautiful, relatively unknown production to the community." Based on the book by John Ciarde, Children of Eden tells the Biblically-based story of Genesis from the point of view of Eve, depicted as a curious woman who bites into the apple to taste the spark of creation. The story of Noah and the flood tells about Cain and Abel, featuring Cain's daughter singing to Noah's son about why she can't board the ark. "I'm not a stranger to the rain," she explains. "You feel it on so many levels," says Feldman. "Do you choose love and conquer all or do what is expected?" Beautifully written, produced and performed, Children of Eden provides entertainment for the family of all ages. As with the material on which it is based, Cabrillo Music Theatre’s Children of Eden ends with hope and a promise—and the rich storytelling, music, dance and humanity serve as an inspirational reminder that we are ALL the Children of Eden. "This is one production not to miss!" promises Feldman. For ticket information, call 805-497-8613 or visit CabrilloMusicTheatre.com. To arrange a special introductory presentation of Children of Eden prior to the production at a church or for a community group, please contact Maureen Feldman, Director of Development and Communications, at 805.497.8613 ext. 3.

Financial Buzz
At the Corner of
Wall Street
& Memory Lane ARTICLE ROCKY MILLS
I
started in the investment biz in 1977. Jimmy Carter was in the White House. The Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 840— it’s now approaching 18,000! Our industry has changed a lot in these four decades. Stroll with me down memory lane. My career began at one of the larger national firms of its day, Paine Webber Jackson & Curtis. In the early 80s, it became simply Paine Webber. Remember those great “Thank you Paine Webber” TV ads? In the early 80s, I headed up Paine Webber’s National Marketing Center in New York, broadcasting investment information to our 8,000 advisors via the firm’s private “squawk box” (speaker boxes located on every advisor’s desk, with live commentary coming directly from the New York headquarters). Whatever happened to Paine Webber and other old-line firms from the late 70s like E.F. Hutton, Dean Witter, Shearson, Lehman Brothers, Sutro, Prudential Securities, and Bateman Eichler? The first bunch—Hutton, Witter, Shearson and Lehman—eventually became part of Morgan Stanley. Sutro, after more than 100 years of independence, is now part of RBC Wealth Management. “Pru” and Bateman are among the many predecessor firms of Wells Fargo. All this was well before the advent of online brokers. Heck, it was well before the advent of the internet! Double-heck—it was before PCs! Today, we process client stock trades electronically, with near-instantaneous execution and confirmation. Back then, we (a) wrote up a paper trade “ticket” and (b) walked the ticket to a wire operator who transmitted the order to a central office who would, in turn, send it on to the floor of the exchange. When the trade was executed, our central office would send a wire back to our wire operator, who, in turn, would put the confirmation slip in our wire-room slot and turn on a light that was visible throughout the office. Running to the wire room with a ticket in hand (or running back to the wire room to check a confirmation when our light went on) usually meant that we had a very market-sensitive order. Big offices used pneumatic tubes to take the place of wind-sprinting brokers. Do you remember the electronic stock tickers with the stock symbols racing across them? Our office housed some 20 brokers in one large
36
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | February 2016
high-ceiling room, with the brokers’ private offices separated by glass. The “tape” (as it was called—a vestige from the pre-electronic days when the same information was actually printed on a narrow roll of paper) ran the entire width of the office. In front of this ticker you could always see a half-dozen or so “regulars”—tape watchers who stared at every trade for hours on end. By the time I started, we used Quotron terminals to get our stock quotes. They weren’t anything like today’s robust quote delivery systems, but it was a quantum leap ahead of the ticker tape. Thank goodness! I used to do a stock market update on a local radio show. I can remember getting very excited about big movements in the Dow—up 30 points in a single day! Nowadays, the Dow can move 30 points in a few seconds! And, of course, the volume of shares traded then paled in comparison to the volume today. In 1977, the NYSE reports that their average volume per month was 440 million shares. CNN Money shows that we now trade that much before lunch in a single day! (NYSE Composite volume has averaged 962 million per day for the three months ending Dec. 7, 2015.) Thanks for letting me wax nostalgic. Let me be clear: I like most of the changes: more and quicker information, better investment tools with lower expenses, easier communication methods, but in many ways, nothing has changed. We still practice our craft one client at a time. We still build relationships with families who depend on us to make sense of all this stuff. And, after nearly 40 years, it’s still intrinsically rewarding to help people achieve their financial goals. Parting Thoughts
February: The Month of the Heart GIVE YOURS SOME LOVING CARE ARTICLE CORIE GOODSON
T
he heart is often referred to as the symbol of love. While love is vital to a fulfilling life, a healthy heart is crucial to it. A healthy heart functions without us having to even think about it. It beats about 100,000 times per day and pumps 1.5 gallons of blood through the body per minute. The more in shape the heart is, the lower the heart rate because a stronger heart can pump more volume per beat. Made up of its own specialized cells that are not found anywhere else in the body, the heart pumps nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood through the cardiovascular system. The blood is essentially a delivery system and a garbage truck. It first nourishes us, and then transports toxins and metabolic waste to the kidneys and liver for disposal. Without this vital system, we would all cease to exist. Unless we develop a problem, we don’t pay much attention to what our heart does for us 24 hours a day. Kind of makes you want to give it a bit more respect, right? That’s especially true when you hear the statistics that say heart disease and diseases of the cardiovascular system remain the number one reason lives are cut short. Heart disease can go undetected and be asymptomatic for decades before an incident occurs. No one gets critically ill overnight, which means heart issues cannot be reversed overnight either. The good news is that we can often help change destiny. While heart disease can be hereditary, it may not necessarily have to dominate one’s landscape.

We do have a lot of control over how healthy we are by taking some simple steps. Small changes can add up to big results over time, especially if there isn’t a major defect that cannot be altered by lifestyle alone. Most of us know now that the traditional food pyramid we grew up with is completely upside down and antiquated. It has long been thought that reducing fat in the diet was the primary way to reduce heart disease. When it comes to convenience and fast food, I would agree. The more modern contention is that we should eat food that doesn’t come with labels. Fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds, eggs, meat and fish should dominate your grocery cart. Single-ingredient, nature-made food eliminates the often confusing list of ingredients. Avoiding the inner aisles of the grocery store as much as possible makes this easier. Cardiovascular exercise is as important to keeping the heart healthy as what we eat. As little as 30 minutes a day can change your health profile. So, instead of perpetuating the saying that “we are a nation of people living short and dying long,” let’s get up, get moving and put nutrient-dense foods on our plates to keep that wonderful small, but mighty, organ running its best for as long as possible. Corie Goodson, MPH, CNC, earned her master’s degree in public health in 1995. She is a health educator, wellness promotion speaker, author and certified nutrition coach.
