This year’s gala will pay special tribute to our esteemed World War II and Korean War Veterans, as well as to all Veterans who have dedicated themselves to the service of our country.

To make this event a success, we are seeking sponsors who share our commitment to honoring the U.S. Military. We warmly invite you to consider supporting this mission by becoming a sponsor. As a sponsor, your company’s name and logo (or your personal name) will be prominently featured in our elegantly designed program book, displayed on a large screen throughout the evening, and recognized on our website. Additionally, sponsors are welcome to place a custom ad in our program book.

For The Troops is a completely volunteer-run organization dedicated to sending ‘We Care’ packages to deployed service members. To date, we’ve shipped over 304,000 packages to locations worldwide, including Eastern Europe, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, and Africa. Our annual shipping costs exceed $15,000 per month, a significant expense that is only possible through the generous support of our donors and sponsors. Every donation makes a tangible impact, as reflected in the heartfelt thank-you letters we receive from recipients. As one service member shared, “Receiving these packages felt like Christmas, which was nice since we’ll be missing Christmas with our families.”

Our fundraising goal for this year’s gala is $125,000, which will cover approximately eight months of shipping costs. While many items in our packages are donated, the cost of delivering them remains high. Your support is greatly appreciated and essential to sustaining our mission.

“All You Need is Love”

As Robin will tell you I am NOT a Beatles fan. But since February is our “Love” issue I thought I would share some of their love. After all, they are members of my badly mislabeled Silent Generation…along with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mick Jagger, Joni Mitchell and many others. All of them are muses for the underachieving and overrated Baby Boomer generation. Since I am a jazz aficionado, I am not a generational muse or follower, however, most everyone else is and they LOVE it. Oops, I am already being edgy (I am from Philadelphia and can’t help it) and losing the spirit, so let’s get it back by taking a quick look at what there Is to LOVE right here in our Conejo Valley and Santa Rosa Valley communities.

• We may all disagree on some or even many issues, but we get along and resolve them without the inflexible polarization and isolation that is prevalent in much of our country. Frankly, I LOVE most everyone for that civility.

• Robin and I LOVE the entrepreneurial spirit that we just learned about with the new owner of Marcello Ristorante in Thousand Oaks. Edwin Khaziran and his brother bought this venerable Italian restaurant several months ago. It is high risk (it was on a decline when they took over) and high reward. Bringing it back for old patrons (it’s been there for 30+ years) and introducing it to new patrons is a huge challenge. We are rooting for Edwin. I am biased because their osso buco is the best within hundreds of miles

• I LOVE waking up each morning and going to the YMCA and as I work out, I gaze at the incredible view from the second floor gym. A beautiful sunrise and no smog.

• We LOVE the Giving Back spirit of the families we live amongst. Whether it is money if they can afford it or just volunteering time and effort, the spirit is there. There are a multitude of nonprofits in the Conejo Valley, and they could not be in a better place. We recently featured John Notter and Rosemary Allison as two leading philanthropists. There are many more who give as much as possible as well. Well, that’s enough lovin’ for now. I think I’ll go watch the Eagles game, boo a few times and return to my gnarly Philly Guy, City of Brotherly Shove roots.

Why More Sellers Are Hiring Real Estate Agents

Putting your house for sale on your own – often called “For Sale by Owner” or FSBO – might be on your mind. But you should know that it gets complicated very quickly, especially in today’s complex market.

That’s why data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) shows a record low number are going the route of selling on their own.

Instead, more and more homeowners are choosing to work with a real estate agent (see graph below):

And here’s why partnering with an expert is the go-to choice. Selling your home is a big deal, and while FSBO might seem like a way to save time or money, it comes with a lot of responsibilities, and can harm your bottom line when your Buyers decide that they should receive the credit for the representation you are not getting.

The selling process requires setting the right price, navigating a growing amount of legal paperwork, and creating a solid strategy to attract buyers. And going it alone often means taking on more than you bargained for.

Let’s look at two big reasons why working with a pro can make all the difference.

1. Getting the Price Right

One of the biggest hurdles when selling a house on your own is figuring out the right price. It’s not as simple as picking a number that sounds good – you need to hit the bullseye. Price your home too high, and buyers may overlook your listing. Price it too low, and you could leave money on the table or even raise red flags about the condition of your home.

Real estate agents are experts in finding the right price for today’s market trends. As Zillow explains:

“Agents are pros when it comes to pricing properties and have their finger on the pulse of your local market. They understand current buying trends and can provide insight into how your home compares to others for sale nearby.”

With their knowledge of the local market, buyer behavior, and what homes like yours are selling for, an agent will help you make sure you set a price that’s competitive and that’ll draw in buyers. And it’s that perfectly strategic price that’ll set the stage for selling at top dollar.

2. Understanding & Managing the Paperwork

Another part of the process is dealing with a growing stack of paperwork, from disclosure forms to contracts. Each document needs to be completed accurately, and there are legal requirements to follow that can feel overwhelming if you’re not familiar with them.

This is another area where an agent’s expertise really shines. They’ve handled these documents countless times and know exactly what’s needed to keep everything on track. Your agent will guide you through the paperwork step by step, making sure it’s done right the first time and you understand what you’re signing. With their help, you can avoid unnecessary stress and mistakes that can lead to delays, legal complications, and more.

Bottom Line

Selling your house is a big decision, and having a trusted real estate agent on your side can make all the difference.

Let’s connect so you have a pro to help with everything from pricing your home to managing the details. That way we can take the guesswork out of the process and help you sell with confidence.

PROTECTING HOMES WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY SERVICE, MATERIALS AND A SMILE

NEMA ROOFING

We love our homes, so investing significant time, energy and finances to create and maintain them is well worth the effort. While most homeowners tend to focus on decorating and remodeling their interior space, they oftentimes overlook the crown jewel of the home—

a proper evaluation,” explains Adam, who learned about best practices in roofing from his father. “As a child in South Africa, my dad had a roofing company,” he shares, remembering, “As a little kid, dad would make me pick up nails—he would never let me get on

“I THINK A LOT OF HOMEOWNERS DON’T KNOW THAT THERE ARE SPECIAL MATERIALS THAT CAN SERVE AS SOLUTIONS FOR FIRE PREVENTION.”

the roof. When it comes to protecting your biggest investment and everything inside of it, the importance of a quality roof cannot be overstated.

It’s usually a leak or some other problem that prompts homeowners to give their roof the attention it deserves. Such was the case with Thousand Oaks residents Tore and Roxanne Livia. When a rainstorm resulted in a leak in their bedroom, they reached out to NEMA Roofing to investigate.

“We found NEMA Roofing through Yelp; they had nothing but five-star reviews, so we decided to give them a shot,” says Roxanne. As is customary for NEMA Roofing, Owner Adam Gringuez promptly inspected the Livia’s roof.

“It’s important for me to come out and personally meet the people and do

the roof because I was too little—but he had me pick up nails because he was so precise in making sure the job site was clean and taking care of all the details.”

Growing up around construction and roofing taught Adam the importance of valuing customers’ time and property and treating people right, lessons he applies daily as the owner of NEMA Roofing.

“NEMA is amen spelled backwards,” Adam points out, noting that in following his father’s footsteps and founding his own roofing company, he embraces the same family values and commitment to integrity with which he was raised.

Adam’s honesty and sincere work ethic is apparent to clients like the Livias. After their first meeting with Adam, the couple knew NEMA Roofing was their answer.

“When Adam explained the materials he uses and why he uses them, that was the biggest motivator to pick NEMA,” Tore shares. “We knew we were paying for quality, and that’s why we went with NEMA,” he adds, noting that the new roof was installed with impressive speed and the highest quality.

“I would recommend NEMA Roofing to anybody! Our roof is just fabulous, and we absolutely love it,” says Roxanne.

TOP QUALITY SERVICES

Whether a needed repair or a whole new roof, NEMA Roofing provides customers with top notch customer service they can rely on.

“As a family run, high-end roofing contractor specializing in roofing systems of the highest quality, it’s our mission is to provide our services with the highest standards of integrity and honesty,” says Adam. Ensuring that every member of his crew adheres to his high standards, Adam carefully vets each one before hiring. “All of my technicians are hand-selected and go through a rigorous selection process,” he explains, adding that the team is like a family, with several cousins and extended members upholding NEMA’s customer-centric values.

After NEMA Roofing’s initial scrupulous inspection of each project, Adam meets with clients to formulate a plan, including making recommendations about the best materials to protect against fire, rain and significant temperature variations.

“The life of a roof depends on many factors, including what type of roof one installs, such as a metal roof, concrete roof or roofs utilizing clay or asphalt,” explains Adam, noting that with proper maintenance, roofs can last for 2 to 3 decades.

In California, where fire storms are a frequent issue, the choice of roofing

“I WOULD

RECOMMEND

NEMA ROOFING TO ANYBODY!”

materials can play a huge role in keeping homes safe.

“I think a lot of homeowners don’t know that there are special materials that can serve as solutions for fire prevention. Our metal roofs are fire-rated and our company is proud to be one of the few roofing contractors that custom-fabricate standing seam metal roofs directly on-site,” says Adam.

As fire-rated materials have fireproof wire mesh that prevents embers from getting into the roof, “we can often save the house by using the right materials,” which turns out to be less expensive than repairing fire damage would be in the long run, Adam explains.

In addition, “Our materials are more energy efficient than those of many other companies in Southern California.” Working with reputable manufacturers, NEMA Roofing sources the highest quality self-adhesive materials to seal roofs and ensure leak-free areas around all nails, pipes, chimneys and skylights.

Licensed, bonded and insured with more than 25 years of experience, NEMA Roofing takes pride in its reputation for constructing high-quality roofs that are built to last with a smile.

For more information, contact NEMA Roofing at 805.977.5949 or visit NEMARoofing.com

A ROOF – everyone needs one, and most people have one, but we still tend to take them for granted until they start leaking. Whether it’s damage to be fixed or a well-planned roofing project, NEMA Roofing can provide you with the high-quality roofing services that you’re looking for in the Conejo Valley, Santa Rosa Valley and throughout Ventura County. The rainy season will be here before you know it. Most people wait until it is too late. Water damage and mold can be a real headache. Repairing damage costs more than smart maintenance or a new roof. Get ahead of the game!

LOVING THE ARTS!

NONPROFITS SHARE THEIR MAGIC WITH THE COMMUNITY

The Conejo Valley region is fortunate to have numerous arts organizations dedicated to sharing the magic of live theatre with community members of all ages. Here, we spotlight some of our favorites. Be sure to support these talented teams by attending their events and showing your love and appreciation for their invaluable efforts to entertain, uplift and inspire.

CONEJO PLAYERS THEATRE

Conejo Players Theatre was born in 1958 with a “Let’s start a theatre” attitude, a meager treasury and a handful of volunteers to build a stage in a barn and put on shows. Within 7 years, that attitude evolved into: “Let’s build a theater!”

Conejo Players Theatre presents an eclectic mix of musicals, plays, improv (adult and youth), and youth shows run completely by volunteers and at no cost to the participants. The theatre provides opportunities to both seasoned and novice performers, directors, technical staff and other production-related positions. The nonprofit services the community with quality entertainment at affordable ticket prices.

Mission: The mission of Conejo Players Theatre is to provide the community with a year-round schedule of live theatre and events produced to serve the cultural, educational and entertainment needs of the community. Also, to welcome and provide an avocational opportunity for all volunteers interested in the theater arts to participate in the many activities of community theatre.

2025 Season Highlights: Conejo Players Theatre’s 67th season main stage opens with the farce comedy “Hotbed Hotel” on January 10. The beloved musical “Anastasia” opens on March 21. They will be producing the Ventura County premiere of “The Book of Will” on June 6. Ken Ludwig’s clever adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” takes the stage on August 8. The musical “A Chorus Line” will close out the season; it opens on November 7.

Youth shows include the play, “Velveteen Rabbit: A Toy Story,” (May 2) and the hit musical, “Disney’s Descendants: The Musical” (October 3).

Throughout the year they will also be hosting Adult and Youth Improv Team Shows, Readers Theatre’s staged readings of classic and original works, and special community events including Broadway Karaoke. This month on February 22, Conejo Players Theatre participates in the first Conejo Valley Comedy Fest!

GOLD COAST THEATRE CONSERVATORY

For 30 years Gold Coast Theatre Conservatory has provided classes in all aspects of theatre arts for students who value creative expression and the powerful idea of process over performance. Classes focus on training, tools and a classic approach to true character development. Students are urged to act, rather than perform. Here, theatre is a group activity, a team sport, a publicly shared journey into worthwhile material and into the self.

Each year Gold Coast Theatre Conservatory teaches classes through Conejo Recreation and Park District. Classes include Beginning and Intermediate Acting and Improvisation and the popular Acting in a Production, which features approximately 20 students in a production class that culminates in a final production that runs for three performances in the Theatre on the Hill at the Hillcrest Center. In 2024, students performed “The Hotel Key” and “Mythical Creatures: Tournament of Champions,” two original plays written by Kati Olexiewicz and directed by Stephanie Wilson and Olexiewicz. Through the process students participate in workshopping the play through early readings where they provide their own script notes and assist in character and story development. Students also enjoy classes in Audition

Technique, Stage Combat and Character Breakdown throughout the rehearsal process.

In 2025, classes will be held on Sundays at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts. Beginning and Intermediate Acting & Improv takes place Sundays from 9 to 10 a.m. Each of these classes runs for 6 weeks and this class is suggested as a prerequisite for Acting in a Production, an approximately 13-week course culminating in June and again in December with a production.

THE ENDLESS LOVE OF TRAVEL:

Travel is more than just a journey between points on a map—it's a transformative experience that awakens the soul, challenges perspectives and creates memories that last a lifetime. In an increasingly connected yet strangely divided world, travel remains the ultimate bridge between cultures, experiences and human understanding.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF TRAVEL

Every stamp in a passport tells a story. It's not just about the miles traveled but also about the memories

gathered, the conversations shared and the personal growth experienced. Today’s travelers aren't just tourists but folks seeking genuine connections, unique experiences and a deeper understanding of our wonderfully diverse planet.

Travel exposes us to different ways of life, customs and traditions. This exposure fosters empathy and tolerance, helping us become more open-minded global citizens. By immersing ourselves in new cultures, we gain a deeper understanding of the world and our place within it.

Discovering the World’s Most Inspiring Destinations in 2025

The true magic of travel lies not in the photographs we collect but in the moments that photographs can never fully capture. A breathtaking sunset over the Namibian desert, the unexpected kindness of a stranger in a remote Andean village, the laughter shared with fellow travelers—these experiences become permanent threads in the fabric of our narratives. Jessica Haff’s first thought when the doctor’s office called to request a follow-up appointment for further exams was, “I am too young to have breast cancer.” A 39-year-old nurse at Adventist Health Simi Valley, she felt her stomach tighten, aware of what the request for a follow-up appointment might mean. The result? An aggressive form of cancer was discovered after her routine annual mammogram at the Nancy Reagan Breast Center, which is owned and operated by Adventist Health Simi Valley.

Within a month of the mammogram appointment, Jessica underwent a lumpectomy and double radical mastectomy and began chemotherapy. Each step of her treatment was designed by a team of physicians who focused on her needs as they selected each element of her care plan. Today, Jessica is 2 years in her journey to becoming cancer-free.

Breast cancer rates continue to increase in Ventura County, and shockingly, younger women like Jessica are being diagnosed.

“Breast screening services are more important than ever,” states Dr. Jenna Gharzeddine,

Jessica’s primary care physician. “It is concerning that we are seeing and treating younger women for breast cancer. In order to meet the growing needs for early detection and screening, we will need to expand our capacity significantly.”

Adventist Health Simi Valley plans to do just that—to add new mammography and ultrasound rooms. The Nancy Reagan Breast Center opened 30 years ago, when Simi Valley was a much smaller community. While the center is fully equipped with 3-D mammography, ultrasound and DEXA-scanning equipment, along with excellent physicians, technicians and staff, the building needs to

Adventist Health Simi Valley’s Breast Center

be expanded and renovated to meet the community’s growing need. Renovations to the center will add another mammography room and a new ultrasound room, improving scheduling options and helping more patients gain access to a trusted way to detect breast cancer.

Former first lady Nancy Reagan was the leader in breast health awareness when she went public with her own breast cancer diagnosis in 1987. In a routine annual mammogram her cancer was detected early and she chose to have a mastectomy. She remained cancer-free for 29 years until she passed in 2016 from natural age-related causes. In 1994, Mrs. Reagan gave her name to the newly opened breast center in Simi

Valley owned by Adventist Health. Because of her revered name and high profile, she had an immense impact on bringing awareness to breast health and the need for consistent annual screenings. Adventist Health is proud to continue her legacy with the expansion and renovation of the center to be able to serve more women and families.

As a local, faith-based, not-for-profit hospital, Adventist Health Simi Valley is known for its personalized caring environment. Their mission,” Living God’s love by inspiring health, wholeness and hope,” is the foundation of their decisions to continually improve and prioritize patient care. Love is at the center of their culture and they express that love in their commitment to growing and improving the breast center. If you have been impacted by breast cancer and want to get involved, you can learn more about the center and our expansion here: simivalley.give.adventisthealth.org

Both Dr. Rastegar and Dr. Kohanchi are proud graduates of the Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. Dr. Kohanchi went on to specialize in dental anesthesiology at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and is currently a faculty member at USC’s dental school. Dr. Kohanchi is highly skilled at treating a variety of patients, including children and those with special needs or other unique considerations. His expertise in both dentistry and anesthesia allows him to seamlessly combine these specialties to provide exceptional, comfortable care for all his patients.

Dr. Rastegar loves providing a wide range of dental care for patients of all ages. Since becoming a mother, she finds it especially meaningful to share in the excitement of first-time dental visits for little ones. She has a particular passion and talent for cosmetic and implant dentistry, having placed thousands of dental implants throughout her career. Dr. Rastegar is also an instructor for Stabili-Teeth, a nationally renowned company offering innovative implant solutions for missing teeth. Together, their combined experience and dedication create a practice that prioritizes patient comfort and outstanding results.

WHAT TYPES OF CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT WHILE PATIENTS ARE ASLEEP?

We can treat a wide range of dental conditions, from routine procedures to more complex treatments. This includes addressing tooth decay with fillings or crowns, performing root canals, extracting teeth (including wisdom teeth), placing dental implants and completing full-mouth rehabilitations. We can also provide gum disease treatments, cosmetic procedures like veneers and even extensive restorative work in a single visit. Sleep dentistry allows us to complete multiple treatments efficiently and comfortably, making it ideal for patients with dental anxiety, time constraints or extensive dental needs.

IS SLEEP DENTISTRY SAFE?

Yes, sleep dentistry is very safe when performed by trained professionals in a controlled environment. Our office prioritizes patient safety by using the latest monitoring technology and tailoring sedation levels to every individual’s needs. We conduct a thorough health review before any sedation procedure to ensure it’s the right option for you. Our Dentist Anesthesiologists work directly with our patient’s other health care providers to ensure optimal conditions prior to treatment. Whether it’s nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation, we closely monitor your vital signs throughout the entire process. Sleep dentistry is especially beneficial for patients with dental anxiety, sensitive teeth, strong gag reflexes or complex treatment needs, allowing them to receive the care they need comfortably and safely.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF SLEEP DENTISTRY?

Sleep dentistry offers several advantages, especially for patients who experience dental anxiety, have a low pain threshold or need extensive dental work. The primary benefit is comfort—patients can relax completely or even sleep through their procedure without feeling any pain or stress.  Sleep dentistry provides a vital pathway to care for individuals in the special-needs community and those who are highly medically compromised as well. For patients with sensory sensitivities, severe anxiety or conditions that make traditional dental care challenging, sedation ensures a calm, stress-free experience. Additionally, medically compromised individuals benefit from the controlled environment of sleep dentistry, where their vital signs can be closely monitored by trained professionals throughout the procedure, reducing risks and enhancing safety. This approach makes essential dental treatments accessible to those who might otherwise avoid care due to their unique needs. Sleep dentistry allows us to perform multiple treatments in a single session, saving patients time and avoiding the need for multiple visits. This is particularly helpful for individuals with busy schedules or those requiring significant dental work. Overall, it makes the experience smoother, faster and much more manageable for patients seeking comprehensive care.

WHAT CAN CLIENTS EXPECT FROM THEIR FIRST VISIT?

For your first dental visit with us, you can expect a warm, relaxing experience from the moment you walk in. We’ll take the time to get to know you, discuss your dental goals, and make sure you feel completely comfortable. Our team will guide you through a thorough exam and any necessary imaging, all while creating a stress-free, personalized plan for your care. It’s all about building trust and making you feel right at home!

HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS STAND APART FROM OTHERS?

Our dental office stands apart because we focus on creating a family-oriented, comforting environment while delivering the highest quality dental care. What truly sets us apart is our ability to offer such a wide variety of dental services all under one roof—a rarity in the dental world. This allows us to care for a broad range of patients, including those with complex needs, without the hassle of constant referrals to other specialists.

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?

We’re so excited to share that our office is brand new, having just opened in the fall of 2024! While the office itself is new, we bring with us years of experience in dentistry. After practicing individually for many years, we decided to combine our expertise and vision to create something truly special—a dental office that feels calming, personalized, and completely focused on the patient experience. It’s been an incredible journey coming together to build this unique space, and we’re thrilled to welcome our community into what we’ve worked so hard to create!

WHAT PATIENT SPECIALS DOES SOCAL SLEEP DENTISTRY OFFER?

Additionally, we provide flexible payment plans to ensure our patients can comfortably receive the treatments they need.

MC AESTHETICS: love your look

Natural beauty comes from within, believes Thousand Oaks med spa Owner Marichu Cortes. At MC Aesthetics, Marichu’s clients love her ability to bring their inner beauty to light for all to see. Delivering beautiful, natural-looking results using advanced skincare technology and procedures is an artform that Marichu takes pride in perfecting.

“When clients walk into my medical spa, I want them to be wowed from start to finish. It's not just injecting and poking somebody in the face. There's an art to it. The face is very vascular and there are many different capillaries, muscles and nerves,” says Marichu, whose extensive experience as a registered nurse provides a solid foundation for safely serving clients.

“I always wanted to go into the beauty industry, and I felt in order to be a great aesthetic nurse, you have to start from the beginning,” she says. “Being a floor nurse gave me a great foundation,” says Marichu, who worked at several prestigious hospitals, including Cedars Sinai, St. Luke's, Mercy and St. Mary's, and honed her aesthetician skills at plastic surgeons’ offices and private med spas before founding MC Aesthetics in 2021

Ensuring the comfort and safety of patients starts with a thorough consultation to assess their goals and tailor a customized plan.

“It's important to really make sure that whatever I'm doing for my clients, that they're well informed and well educated,” notes Marichu. “I’m very thorough with my consultation. If somebody comes in for say, Botox®, I fully assess their entire face and let them know their options.”

Marichu’s services include Botox®, fillers and Sculptra®, a poly-L-lactic acid collagen stimulator which helps stimulate a person's own collagen. Lasting for many years, the procedure provides a fullface rejuvenation and adds volume, plumpness and tightness in the whole the face for a more natural look.

MC Aesthetics’ clients are also delighted with their results from Marichu’s new service, DiamondGlow®. The dermabrasion treatment exfoliates, extracts and infuses customized serums into the skin, leaving clients with an immediate glow and lasting results.

MC Aesthetics also offers their newest device called Venus Versa Pro, which includes radio frequency noninvasive skin tightening, body contouring, Intense Photo Light Therapy (IPL) and Radio Frequency Microneedling (skin resurfacing). Seeing her clients’ elation about their results post-service makes Marichu smile.

“I'm very blessed that I found my passion because I love what I do,” says Marichu. “I love waking up every morning and walking into my own practice. It’s pretty awesome! Of course, it's a lot of hard work too, but it's worth it.”

Caring in the Conejo

9TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF THE TREES BENEFITS HOSPICE

In December, Hospice of the Conejo held their 9th Annual Festival of the Trees. Many local businesses gave their support by sponsoring and decorating the trees, including Christine Wilson and Ann Castle of Conejo Hearing Center (pictured). The community then voted on their favorite Christmas tree and had the opportunity to purchase them. All proceeds went to benefit Hospice of the Conejo’s Care Giving Programs and Services.

What Is Love?

Discover the Power of Love

Love is such a powerful word. What do you love, who do you love and how do you share your love? Do you love yourself? What makes you love something or someone?

Were you loved? If you were, did you feel loved? Do you make others feel loved? There are so many ways to look at love. How does love make you feel? When you love someone, how do you want them to feel?

Security comes to my mind, and not feeling alone. Feeling complete and happy is another gift from feeling loved. Is love the ultimate gift? It is when you love yourself.

If you are a mom or a dad, I encourage you to teach your children to love themselves. If you are a teacher, I encourage you to teach your students to love themselves. If you are a grandparent, teach your grands to love themselves.

Whatever career you're in, find what you love in your work and in your everyday life. Because when you love something you not only enjoy it, but you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

When I was doing my clients' hair, my first question to them was what they loved

about themselves. They looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. It truly helped them see their own beauty.

I invite you to a love party with yourself. Here's a story that I hope will make you realize we are all individually special:

"Three good friends went to a party. The one who was heavier wished she was thin. The one who was curvy wished she was clever. The one who was clever wished she loved how she looked. The really outgoing one wished she was witty. The one who was witty wished she was pretty.

“All three friends thought the other two were just fine. If only they could let their own bright light shine. So, throw on your smile if you're feeling heavier or too thin. Enjoy fun and friendship .... love the skin that you're in."

SOLO ON VALENTINE’S DAY

Fall in Love

ARTICLE BY BARTON GOLDSMITH
Being alone or single on Valentine’s Day is not a condemnation of your worth as a person or a reflection of your desirability—the timing just isn’t good this year.

Some think Valentine’s Day should be a national holiday while others would like to see it banned from the calendar. Others, who are alone, would rather ignore the whole thing. But that’s almost impossible to do. You can’t even go into a pet store without seeing something with Cupid on it. Wherever you are in life, February 14 conjures up all kinds of feelings.

Being alone or single on Valentine’s Day is not a condemnation of your worth as a person or a reflection of your desirability—the timing just isn’t good this year. If you have made the choice to be single, you may have developed your own unique set of coping skills. Whether by choice or by circumstance, however, if you find yourself without a date on 2/14, you will need to create ways to make it a good day for yourself.

We all make choices every day. By making the decision that you are going to, at the very least, be content on Valentine’s Day, you have just relieved yourself of a great burden. You don’t have to look for ways or reasons to feel bad. And yes, it is a choice.

There are many articles and blogs on how to cope, yet coping may not be easy. For instance, you really can’t ignore it when your friends are going to a party that you weren’t invited to. That being the case, millions of people make up their own celebrations rather than try to ignore Saint Valentine. Women do seem to be better at this than men. If there’s a game on television, the guys will make it through the evening, but women generally know how to have more fun. Some women I know go out as a group and whoop it up around town, going to

dinner and enjoying the festivities. Others have suggested scavenger hunts or girls-only parties. There are endless activities. The trick here is to engage in one.

If being alone is your only option, you can make it better for yourself by planning some entertainment. Doing something that you wouldn’t typically do with a partner, such as go-cart racing or scrapbooking, will allow you to relax and help you feel that you are not the only one going through this. Valentine’s Day may also inspire you to take that scary step of going online or getting introduced to that cousin of your friend.

There is no shame in being alone on Valentine’s or on any other day. Sometimes it’s a choice, and sometimes it’s not. But being alone is a part of most people’s lives, and allowing yourself to feel beaten down because you can’t participate in “national couples’ day” is unnecessary.

Take the parts of the holiday that you like and enjoy them—then let the rest of it go. Knowing that you would rather be with the right person than with someone who is a placeholder will help you make sense of your current relationship status.

Remember that false love is more painful than no love. And don’t settle for less than you deserve.
