this one makes you smile. Thanksgiving has always been a big deal in my family. Between my mom and dad, I have 14 aunts and uncles! I spent an idyllic life enjoying many holidays with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. While my parents came from large families, they decided I would be their only child, much to my disappointment. You see, I always wanted a sibling. Remember Sally Struthers asking viewers to adopt children in other countries? I always wanted my parents to adopt one of those kids. I yearned for a big brother who would be my hero, a sometimes pain in the butt and someone I could always count on. Dad passed in 2002 and Mom in 2009. Thankfully I had my husband, Jim, my kids and extended family to get me through the loneliness of being an “orphan.” Recently, I learned I had a brother who had been adopted in 1960 but didn’t know much else about him. Jim and I submitted our DNA to find out about our heritage several years ago on Ancestry.com, so I thought I’d give it a shot and check my DNA matches. Much to my delight, a close match popped up, and I found my brother, Bill! He has a family with a beautiful wife and three gorgeous daughters! Now I’m a SISTER and an AUNT and a SISTER-IN-LAW—and all that comes with it! This year, I am thankful for many things—my family, this magazine, our community—and I’m very thankful for finding my brother! And yes, we will have a huge Thanksgiving holiday meal with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents, and Bill and his family too! As you read through the stories in this issue, remember our first responders, many of whom will not be with their families over the holidays. We also profile two amazing friends who have made a real difference in the fight against cancer, as well as the local

The town’s boutique scene offers a variety of clothing and accessories, and with a little research, you can narrow that buffet of options into a customized experience that’s perfect for you and whoever’s on your list. RAINEY STREET BOUTIQUE Rainey Street Boutique, named after the popular Austin neighborhood, is as hip as its namesake. Owner Cadi Winters says that when she’s purchasing clothing and accessories to stock her shelves, she always has what’s “in” today on her mind. “We try to be up on today’s fashion trends,” she says. “There are some who think we cater to a younger crowd, but honestly, I think we’re for everyone.” Rainey Street is a new store—it only opened in Fairfield Town Center last August—and that freshness shines through in Cadi’s independent understanding of what she wants to provide to people in Cypress. “Just being able to do my own vision, how I would do it, is so rewarding,” she says. “I think we’re just different. We’re trendy and edgy.”

MAGPIES GIFTS Magpies Gifts is a stalwart institution of the Houston-area boutique scene, with three locations across the map. The store, which began in Montrose, is now in Bellaire, Sugar Land and Cypress, but despite all the changes, it’s still a family-run business. “I think we’re more than a boutique,” says Chrissy Hignett, who co-owns the store with her sister and cousin. “A boutique is for clothing and accessories, but we sell home and gift items, men’s products and lots of things for babies, too. It’s a one-stop shop.” Chrissy says there will be plenty on sale for the holidays, and she’s looking forward to seeing her favorite customers. “I just love Cypress,” she says. “Our customers make coming to work so easy.” Magpies

Haute Suburban Mess isn’t your typical shopping trip; it’s a twoin-one cosmetics-boutique experience. One half of the store features Merle Norman skin care products, which you can’t buy online. The other half offers unique clothing, handbags and jewelry that you can’t find anywhere else in the Cypress area. “It’s very personable here,” says Angee Ruffinno, the store owner. “We spend time with customers and make sure they have everything they need—the perfect colors, the perfect skin routine, the perfect products. This is something you can’t do online.” Although the store is less than 2 years old, Angee has managed to keep up with more established competitors by offering one-of-akind clothes and jewelry for mature women. “We try to be unique,” she says. The concept shines through in the store’s name, obviously. Ruffino says she was trying to come up with an eye-catcher when she wrote it down for the first time. “It’s so competitive out there,” she says. “You want something that grabs people’s attention.” 25712 Highway 290, Suite I 281.304.4000 HauteSuburbanMess.com Instagram: @merle_norman_and_more

B. ELLEN BOUTIQUE Brandy Ellen Divin is a fourth-generation retailer, and the experience shows in the eclectic selection of apparel, handbags and gifts she stocks at her Cypress boutique, B. Ellen. “My great-grandfather bought a general store in the 1920s, and it was passed down to my grandparents, and now my parents have it,” she says. “It’s 80 miles from here, so I wanted something closer to where I live, but still that family experience stays with me.” Brandy says she tries to keep it personal with the products she sells, and she tries out all the beauty products, shampoos and makeup before offering it to her customers. “I do a lot of research,” she says. It’s her customers, after all, that keep her going—and they keep coming back. Brandy chalks it up to the Texas and USA theme she aims to maintain

(NOT)HOME FOR THE HOLI DAYS THREE LOCAL FIRST RESPONDERS ON SPENDING THE HOLIDAYS AT WORK
THE HOLIDAYS ARE WHEN FAMILIES CAN GET TOGETHER, WATCH FOOT-
BALL AND EAT AS MUCH AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE. But that’s not the case for
everyone. Many firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement officers are working when
everyone else in town is sipping eggnog
and swapping stories around the dinner table. We spoke with three of Cypress’ first responders who explain what it’s like to be on duty for the holidays.

Cypress Lifestyle | November 2018
HOW OFTEN DO YOU WORK DURING THE HOLIDAYS? We’re on a rotating schedule—a one day on, one day off sort of thing—so it’s luck of the draw. Last year I had off, but this year I’m working Thanksgiving and Christmas. HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY HANDLE THE WORK SCHEDULE? Over the years, we’ve just gotten used to it. It’s not too bad, but you kind of start noticing it when you miss birthdays and holidays with the kids, so we try to have it the day before or the day after. But also, there are times when I’m just not there. ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL HOLIDAY TRADITIONS AT WORK? We usually have a catered dinner. I think Landry’s or someone is catering this year, so that’ll be great. Last year was Chick-fil-A. The best one was barbecue. I can’t remember which place, but the Christmas the year before last it was a full barbecue spread. HAVE YOU EVER RECEIVED ANY INTERESTING CALLS FOR SERVICE WHEN YOU’RE WORKING OVER THANKSGIVING? Not Thanksgiving, but I believe it was 2012 or 2013 during New Year’s Eve. The clock was striking midnight, and there was a guy who had drunk too many 40s. He had been holding a firecracker the wrong way, and it blew his whole arm off, pretty much from the lower humorous down. Luckily, he had had enough booze that he wasn’t too mad about it at the time, but I’m sure he felt it the next day.

(NOT) HOME(CON TI N U ED)
HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY DEAL WITH YOU HAVING TO WORK OVER THE HOLIDAYS? It’s a little tough. I’m not from Texas, so my family is up north and a lot of times my twin sister and her family come to visit. They’ll prepare dinner while I’m at work and just wait until 10 or 11 at night until I get home. DO YOU USUALLY WORK DURING THANKSGIVING? I’ve actually worked the Thanksgiving shift for the last 10 years. And my husband is a police officer, so we kind of go with the flow. We’ll both get together when we can. We’re used to it. HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY MEMORABLE CALLS ON A HOLIDAY SHIFT? I would have to say the most interesting thing is we got a call that we thought would be a disturbance call, and we thought it would be really weird, but it was actually a family who had made us Thanksgiving dinner. They knew we only had 10 minutes to eat, so we just ate in their driveway. They had a big table set up for us.

CASEY PARKER
SHERIFF’S DEPUTY
HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY HANDLE YOU HAVING TO WORK OVER THE HOLIDAYS? They handle it pretty well. My wife is a paramedic, so sometimes she’s at work and I’m at home. My family is very understanding with the whole thing. We just take it as it comes, and there’s usually no issues. I’ve been doing this for 11 years, so we know how it works by now. DO YOU HAVE ANY HOLIDAY TRADITIONS AT THE FIRE STATION? Usually, the fire department will supply lunch for us over the holidays, and sometimes we’ll invite families up to the station for dinner. It gives everyone time to spend a holiday meal with each other. Sometimes we’ll have 20 or more people come. WHAT DO YOU GUYS EAT? Usually, we’ll do a potluck situation, where our families bring different kinds of food. Sometimes we’ll cook a main course at the station.
BLAKE CHUMLEY FIREFIGHTER
HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY MEMORABLE CALLS WHILE YOU’VE BEEN WORKING OVER THANKSGIVING? Let’s just say don’t put a frozen turkey into hot grease. The cold mixed with the hot grease can cause the grease to boil over. I haven’t seen it happen myself, but I’ve responded to calls where it’s happened before.

JOHN AND CASEY HUGHES WANTED TO CREATE A MOVIE ROOM FOR A LONG TIME, DEBRA CRUZ, THEIR INTERIOR DESIGNER SAYS. But from Debra's perspective, the Hughes family could have more than just a big screen.
A THEATER ROOM FOR MORE THAN JUST MOVIES ARTICLE AARON WEST | PHOTOGRAPHY RANDY DELPILAR | LANAKI PHOTO

Cypress Lifestyle | November 2018
“I recommended for them to build a stage below the screen for the kids to play instruments and put on shows,” she says. “I had a client where we did that before, and it worked out really well.” The Hughes family and Debra decided to move forward with the stage, made out of a beautiful quartz board, created and painted by a professional carpenter. Custom linen draperies adorn both sides, and they can be opened or closed from underneath the stage. Equipped with surround sound, the room even has columns with sconces and backlit movie posters to complete the mood. At first, Debra says the couple wanted a simple stage, but they decided to go all out instead. “We started out just wanting to make a little platform, but as we were discussing it, we decided to just make it a real stage like in a real theater,” Debra says. “Why not, you know?” Now the children watch movies and play instruments in the Hughes Movie Room, an area of their house that was basically empty before, Debra says. It’s an idea she says could work for anyone. “A lot of new homes that are built, there can be a lot of extra space,” she says. “Why not just make that fifth bedroom into a theater room? It’s a great place to relax, and it can inspire creativity.”

It all started with Stephanie’s daughter, Drew, who was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia in 2014. “It was so hard,” Stephanie says. “I kind of zoned out; I would cry alone in my car. I had to be strong for her.” When she was nominated by a friend from high school to participate in the LLS Woman of the Year, it was impossible for her to say no. She had the means, she had the time and she had the personal connection through her daughter. What she didn’t have were the donations, but that would change.
“Your campaign is what you make it,” Stephanie says, noting that she normally wouldn’t consider herself outgoing enough to organize the kind of events and activities that Woman of the Year required. “If you want to raise a lot of money, you have to reach out to a massive amount of people,” Jordan says. “I was very dedicated.” In the end, Jordan’s efforts paid off. She raised $365,000, breaking the local chapter's record and placing second nationally, and claiming the 2018 Woman of the Year title. Making it twice as nice, Drew was named 2018 Girl of the Year.
