“Looking back on my childhood and my early development as an artist and individual, I realize how fortunate I was to start my dance training with Scripps Performing Arts. It was through their extremely nurturing, positive, fun, and more importantly noncompetitive program, that I never lost sight of my own personal reasons for dancing and never became tired of it. One of the most important things the Academy instilled in its’ students was that even though we were children, we could make a difference in the world. Although I am just one small being in this universe, I too can make a difference

Welcome to November’s issue of Del Mar Lifestyle, Happy Thanksgiving! This month we are all about Giving Thanks and giving back to our community. In this month’s issue, we meet local residents and business owners who are giving back in meaningful and powerful ways. We meet Isabella’s Giraffe Fund founders Angela Amoroso and Drew Skinner, who help families in their greatest time of need with support and gracious love. We also meet Kim Melia, director with Legal Shield and founder of Work, Play, Love, an initiative in Guatemala serving orphans and empowering all young people to enjoy life. This organization believes that "Everyone Deserves to be Loved." Brent Chastain, owner of Chastain Creations, is also celebrated in this month’s issue. Brent repurposes fallen Redwoods into beautiful tables; truly works of sustainable art. Our business showcase and resident feature this month is with Joel Moody, owner of Revolution Bike Shop. Joel and his team support Pedal the Cause, a local organization fighting to end cancer. We are also very excited to announce the addition of our new editor, F.A. Newton. Welcome onboard F.A.! Del Mar is lucky to have F.A. serving them.

Revered for its expert eyelash extension application, Blink Lash Boutique has relocated from its Cedros Avenue salon to a larger storefront in the Solana Beach Town Center Shopping Center. The new salon is now open. “This move is a testament to our growing business. The new space will allow us to fulfill more appointments, better serve our clients and enable us to offer an even more relaxing and pampering experience,” explains Founder Janelle Koch. The larger salon also means bringing in new service options to the Solana Beach location including a brow specialist for its soon-to-launch brow bar. Revolution bike shop
PEDALING FOR A PURPOSE
R
ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS
evolution Bike Shop Owner Joel Moody has been doing one thing exceedingly well since he first opened his doors over five years ago: Making each and every customer that comes into his shop a top priority. A family-owned business, Revolution Bike Shop is no ordinary bicycle shop. Catering to cycling enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels, this store sells just as much fun and happiness as it does bikes, parts and accessories. This award-winning business provides worldwide products and services with a local touch. Whether you are a die-hard cyclist, a weekend warrior or anything in between, Revolution Bike Shop was designed with you in mind. Owned by cyclists, run by cyclists and operating for cyclists, this is a destination bike shop and online business. Not only do they have an extensive collection of bikes, they also strive to offer the best prices on anything cycling related. This team is ready to price match, ensuring you will always get the best price while simultaneously experiencing the best in customer service. Located in Solana Beach, Revolution Bike Shop has been rated as one of the best bicycle shops in the country by the National Bike Dealers Association, and the Union Tribune

praised the store as the best bike shop of 2013. Most recently the store enjoyed the honor of being recognized as the best bike shop in the Southwest region by Competitor magazine. Formerly located in Leucadia, the shop moved to its current location four years ago. They have a modest 1,800 square feet of retail space. However, it’s not the size of the space that really matters, it’s the size of the hearts of all who work at Revolution Bike Shop that counts. “We are known for the superior service we provide,” emphasizes Moody. “We genuinely care about our customers.” Providing premium and up-to-date products and services is the focus of this business, but it also keeps its finger on the pulse of the community at large. Moody and his team are go-givers at heart and constantly strive to give back to the community and beyond by their involvement in numerous charitable causes and events. Three organizations that hold a special place in the hearts of Moody’s team include Pedal the Cause (PedalTheCause.org), Pedaling for Parkinson’s (PedalingForParkinsons.org) and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS.org). Pedal the Cause is a non-profit dedicated to raising money for cancer research. Pedaling for Parkinson’s was established to advance the understanding of how physical activity affects the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is "the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services." In addition to wanting to give back to the community that has so strongly supported them over the years, the shop’s involvement with these events also stems from personal experience with related health issues. In addition to seeing his dad struggle with cancer, Moody has undergone four surgeries for melanoma and while currently in good health, he undergoes routine PET scans and additional procedures to remove the cancer as it is found. Additionally, Moody’s top bike mechanic, Dan Rock, an icon in the local bicycle circuit known for his mechanical prowess, sustained a serious illness subsequent to a mosquito bite a couple of years ago and was the beneficiary of a fund to cover his medical expenses that was set up by the local community comprised of many people who admire and respect him, not only for his work, but for who he is. Now at age 60, Rock is in phenomenal health and experiencing no setbacks. Through annual events conducted by the organizations they support, Revolution Bike Shop opens up its 20,000-square-foot parking lot as a rest stop for the Pedal the Cause riders, offering water, refreshments, discounts and gift bags to participants. During the Pedaling for Parkinson’s event, they extend their normal operating hours to accommodate the riders that start and finish the event in the store’s parking lot, as well as provide numerous vendor booths. For the Leukemia and Lymphoma event, the store acts as a host and rest stop for the riders. For each event, Revolution Bike Shop stands at the ready to provide anything the riders might need. For more information on Revolution Bike Shop, go online at RevolutionBikeShop.com, visit them at S, 235 Hwy 101 in Solana Beach; or call 858.222.2453. November 2015 | Del Mar Lifestyle

Isabella’s Giraffe Club HELPING FAMILIES REACH NEW HEIGHTS ARTICLE J.M. PERKINS
E
veryone hopes for a healthy birth, safe for mother and child. But some babies need specialized care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This type of care is an increasingly common occurrence: of the 3,000 babies born each year at the UCSD Medical Center, approximately 780 will spend time being treated in the hospital’s NICU. Even more troubling is the specter of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) which is defined as the unexplained death of children less than 1 year of age. According to the Center for Disease Control, in 2013 about 1,500 infants died of SIDS in the United States. It is amidst the confusion, grief, and emotional turmoil surrounding NICU care and SIDS that the founders, parents and volunteers of Isabella’s Giraffe Club have decided to focus their charity work. Inspired by their daughter Isabella, Angela Amoroso and Drew Skinner launched Isabella’s Giraffe Club in 2004. According to Angela, the organization was able to grow in its early days because of the support the family received. “Those around us embraced the idea and got to work... donated their time and developed the logo," Angela explains. "Isabella’s godfather created the web pages that attached to the studio’s website and worked with the hospital to be able to take online donations that would be directly donated to the NICU. It was divine inspiration in action. We were able to formally announce Isabella’s Giraffe Club with a full-page ad in the program for our Nutcracker production.” (In addition to being founders of Isabella’s Giraffe Club, Angela Amoroso and Dean Skinner are the executive director-founder and chief executive officer of the 14

Scripps Performing Arts Academy, respectively.) Since its inception, Isabella’s Giraffe Club has been involved in numerous projects and fundraising efforts. These projects and fundraising efforts include: assisting in the establishment of the UCSD Medical Center Infant Special Care Center Concierge Program, providing t-shirts for its Little (NICU) Grad Picnic, sending ‘preemie packs’ to assist in the care of premature babies transferred in the wake of hurricane Katrina, and helping raise over $470,000 for the UCSD Medical Center Infant Special Care Center. A portion of the funds has been used to purchase a state-of-the-art General Electric ‘Giraffe’ Incubator. But the most important aspect of their mission is their ongoing emotional and educational support of parents with infants in any Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and their assistance of families facing the loss of a child due to SIDS.
When Angela was asked to provide just one story to help explain the core of Isabella Giraffe Club’s work, she relayed the following: “A family with modest means had driven from Illinois to San Diego for a summer holiday. Mom was 26 weeks pregnant here in SD when her waters broke and the baby came super early. Dad had taken the train back to Illinois and Grandma and the 3-year-old sister remained with Mom and Baby at the (UCSD Medical Center) Banister House. "After almost 4 months, the baby was ready to fly home but the family had no resources. At one of our monthly support dinners, Grandma asked me for help. Our funds were already allocated for the year. So I wrote an email and sent it out to our ‘Giraffe people.’ In 30 minutes, the outpouring of love that we received on behalf of this Baby was overwhelming! We had two roundtrip tickets for Mom and Dad on Southwest Airlines, $400 to pay for the oxygen tank to accompany the baby on the plane, a ‘Baby Shower in a Box’ with all the necessary items, and gift cards for the baby and his sibling.” Describing her experience with Isabella’s Giraffe Club, board member Mary Chaparro wrote, “It has been an amazing experience to see the many ways Angela and Drew help and serve others through their foundation... as well as provided a springboard for other families to channel their grief into wonderful philanthropic ventures.” In the months to come, Dove Release at Isabella’s Giraffe Club A Stroll to Inspire will continue their ongoing education and support efforts, including their monthly dinners for parents with children in the NICU at the UCSD Banister House. Additionally, Isabella’s Giraffe Club is working to raise funds and complete “Sienna’s PlayGarden” in partnership with the City of San Diego & the Rancho Penasquitos Recreation Council. In loving memory of their daughter, Sienna, the Palkovic Family is spearheading this Community Project to revitalize Rolling Hills Park with the goal of creating a nature-themed playground that is fun, safe and memorable for all who come out to play.

WORK, PLAY, LOVE EVERY LITTLE GIRL DESERVES TO FEEL LIKE A PRINCESS ARTICLE NOLA SCHODER
A
smiling group of young girls in princess dresses and tiaras pose in front of a pink and purple castle adorned with turrets and a pumpkin carriage. Their fairytale life is a blessing made possible from the hard work and contributions put forth by Kim Melia of Work, Play, Love and her Hogar Heroes. The castle is Maria Auxiliadora Hogar, an orphanage that houses up to 35 girls. Situated in the mountains of Guatemala in the city of Mixco, this home creates a safe place for the girls to learn and grow. Their closest neighbor is the boys’ orphanage, Hogar Miguel Magone. However, their lives were not always a fairytale. Virtually all of the children at these orphanages come from abusive situations, alcoholic parents, or families that cannot support them. Kim shares the account of two boys, ages 7 and 9, who found themselves at the orphanage after being picked up by the police. They had escaped their abusive family in Honduras and made the trek to Guatemala in their rubber boots. The courts ultimately sent them back to their country, only for them to reappear in Guatemala, again on foot, and with a third child in tow. Gabby was taken as a 24

baby from parents with AIDS, and fed only baby food until the age of five before she arrived at Maria Auxiliadora Hogar. Work, Play, Love, a 501c3 non-profit started by LegalShield business partners Mike, Steve, and Kim Melia, is a vital organization creating these fairytales. They began their efforts in Guatemala by fundraising for the existing boys’ orphanage Hogar Miguel Magone, helping to purchase a van to transport the children safely. That was only the beginning. Having a discussion with the orphanage’s directors Karen Rodas and Estuardo Reynoso, Kim recalls asking “What would make you happy? What would make the kids happy?” Karen came up with the idea of building a girls’ orphanage. But not just any orphanage. One that looked like a castle. Four years later, Maria Auxiliadora Hogar became a real-life fairytale. Every little girl deserves to feel like a princess. While the focus of Work, Play, Love is to fundraise to continue operations for the girls’ orphanage, they also help with the boys’ orphanage. The Hogar Heroes developed out of this need for continuous funding. There are currently more than 100 Ho-
gar Heroes that contribute $15 a month on average. These donations fund the entire operation including food, utilities, teachers, programs, psychologists, administration, etc. They are not supporting just one child; their monthly donations fund the entire home. At any one time there might be 100150 kids. They often feed and help the children in the local village go to school as well, so they are really making a positive impact in the community as a whole. In Guatemala, international adoption is not currently a possibility. The courts prefer that children are placed in families through reunification with a biological family member, foster care or domestic adoption. Over 50 percent of Guatemalans live in poverty, suggesting that many families cannot afford another child. So children are sent to a large orphanage where they are given a number. Siblings are frequently separated. The idea of the neighboring orphanages of Miguel Magone and Maria Auxiladora makes it likely that siblings can be housed near one another. “Our purpose is to Work a little, Play a lot, and Love even more,” says Kim. “Sometimes just hanging out with these kids is what they need and what they don’t get. It makes a difference and makes them feel like they are part of a family.” Next on the horizon is a girls’ school which is targeted to open in 2017. As a Platinum Executive Director with LegalShield, Kim Melia has had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala 15+ times in the last few years. Her business gives her the freedom and lifestyle to run the non-profit. She does not take an income through her efforts with Work, Play, Love. To become a Hogar Hero or learn more about Work, Play, Love and the children, visit WorkPlayLove.org.

hen one of California’s legendary redwood trees lies fallen in a forest, one might see only that, a fallen tree. However, Brent Chastain, founder and chief artisan of Chastain Creations, sees something else entirely. What Chastain sees is art, a creative and soulful expression. But above all, Chastain sees redemption for these fallen giants of California’s great forests. Redwood trees are well-known to be the tallest trees on earth. Standing as tall as 300 feet, redwood trees are seemingly immortal. Redwoods are also vital to fighting human pollution, absorbing CO2 emissions. In doing so, redwood trees help provide safehaven for animals and their habitats. Hence, preserving redwoods is very important to California’s environment. Brent Chastain does his part by finding downed redwood logs and recycling the trees into artistic, high-quality furniture. It’s been a long journey since Brent crafted his first piece in a single car garage. He loaded his first slab of redwood into his truck and hauled it to his cousin’s mill, where he began the laborious process of crafting his first piece of furniture. “It’s about being at peace in the wilderness, breathing the fresh air, being rooted in nature. I’m happiest in the wilderness. It’s an adrenaline rush recovering the trees. Saving a log that could have been lying there for 100 years, it’s amazing to think about,” says Brent reflectively, “It’s challenging, but salvaging those strong trees and recycling them into something beautiful makes all that labor worthwhile for sure.” Family has been instrumental in Chastain Creations. Producing something so naturally beautiful does take an extraordinary amount of hard work and dedication. However, it requires a keen creative eye as well. The arts run deep in the Chastain family, as Brent is cousin to Golden Globe-winning and two time Academy Award-nominated actress Jessica Chastain. Thus was the genesis of Chastain Creations, a vision of unique, hand-crafted, custom furniture. Brent, husband to Natalia, father to the adorable Aviella, and a veteran of the U.S. Marines, founded Chastain Creations in 2014. As his passion for salvaging redwoods, and subsequently crafting artistic, beautiful furniture has grown, so has his flourishing business. Truly a labor of love, the same care and thought goes into every piece of furniture Brent creates, be it a glossy, majestic conference table, or domestic pieces such as coffee tables, night stands, or benches. The same passion and attention to detail is always there. It’s not just redwood used at Chastain Creations, but several other high-quality woods, such as parota from Mexico, and black acacia from Australia, among others. From top to bottom Chastain Creations guarantees artful quality and beauty. Great patience and labor also go into all of Brent's pieces. Chastain Creations’ Chisel and Hammer Collection is particularly detailed. It is not hours, days or even weeks that goes into one of these signature pieces, but perhaps months. Brent personally selects and sets aside slabs for these malleable masterworks. Brent will adroitly, and painstakingly, mold and refine it to a customer’s liking. “It’s a piece that people want to see and look at for along time. They just want this centerpiece that makes a huge statement,” says Brent of his Chisel and Hammer Collection. Chastain Creations thrives on working with the customer as well. When a customer makes an appointment with Chastain Creations, located in Carlsbad, they collaborate in choosing their slab of wood, style of furniture, and a stylish base. There are many options for bases, including stainless-steel, solid-brass, handforged iron and others. “Give us a call and let’s create something unique together,” says Brent.

Parting Thoughts
Affirming Our Thankfulness WORDS AND PICTURE DEIRDRE MICHALSKI
W
e have come a long way since the year 1621, when Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the New World. Writings recount a three-day feast and sharing the table with Native Americans who populated the area. They were all bringing their various crops, and the recordings describe tables of wild fowl and venison served with a corn mush and stewed pumpkin. Fast forward to today, and so many of those tried-and-true traditions continue. In my family, we carry forth our own homespun style. Thanksgiving is a celebration of heartfelt gratitude. First and foremost, it is a wonderful day when everyone is cheerfully gathered together. And, since I adore cooking, it is quite special. The menu is filled with so many delicious treats and cherished favorites, with thick, heavenly gravy drizzled over just about everything. Like many foodies, my mailbox is filled with cooking magazines chalk-full of creative recipes offering a new twist on an old favorite. And yes, I try them. I love to experiment. However, over the years, I have come to the realization that my family does not want any of this. Forget the ratatouille casserole to replace the haricot vert (green beans) smothered in butter and dancing with slivers of almonds. Say ‘no’ to the shaved truff les delicately adorning my homemade mashed potatoes. And, a f lat-out “no way Mom” was heard for miles to the mere thought of a deep-fried turkey. I am becoming a better listener. Let it be. We want it…the old-fashioned way. Authentic. And, so it shall be. The table is set weeks ahead, and I often wonder why I did not do this years ago when I was working full-time. It just makes perfect sense. The décor is filled with acorns, pumpkins, multi-colored husks of corn, and fall leaves in hues of rich orange and earth tones. Our fancy gold-trimmed china is placed upon burgundy brocade place settings, and silk napkins are the order of this day. A bevy of glassware stand at attention, all announcing the event is near. Thank goodness for my “count-down” list, which assures me some tiny measure of success. Two weeks out I order the freerange turkey. Then, an outing to sample wines, as we make our holiday selections. Then, shopping begins in earnest. On the Monday prior to Thanksgiving, I begin sautéing the onions, celery and cooking the sausage for the stuffing. Using a recipe written in my mother’s hand is a warm reminder of her presence with me in the kitchen. The white wine is chilled, and the red wine is stationed at the bar. The day prior is a day

filled with activity–from steaming the vegetables, assembling the stuffing and baking the pies. On Thursday, we are up early to retrieve the turkey and prepare it for baking. A mountain of potatoes are waiting, and that means some quality time with my son, as we briskly peel away, chatting about everything and anything. The smell of the turkey wafting through the house has us spellbound. And, after resting, it is sliced to perfection. In recent years, I will admit to one big cheat. I have resorted to purchasing my gravy ahead of time. I would pay anything for those containers of goodness that save me a half hour I do not have. I pour the golden brown sauce into a pan and discard the plastic containers (which I call evidence). As everyone arrives for dinner, the laughter quickly fills the room, and football chants can be heard downstairs. It is all good and wonderful to be together again. As the host, I place a stone at one person’s place setting. The stone represents the earth and harvest. This year it will be my nephew who will lead the conversation on what he is thankful for. He is a Newport Beach Police Officer, and recently announced his engagement. So, he has lots of things to share. Then, he will pass it to the next person, and, one by one, we will learn something new about each other and affirm our thankfulness on this very special day. Dinner will be proudly served.
