Summertime and the livin's easy...

AUGUST 2015 publisher Jennifer Root | JRoot@LifestylePubs.com

W

elcome to the August edition of our magazine. I hope this finds you in the midst of enjoying a truly pleasurable and adventure-filled summer. As I reflect on the summers of my own youth, I am eternally grateful for these last fleeting weeks of summer. As a child growing up in a small rural town in New Jersey, the month of August was always filled with blueberries, corn, farm festivals and the longing to hold on the last sweet days before it was time to head back to school. I would find every way possible to celebrate and hold on to that special summer feeling. I would catch firefly friends in jars, I would open up all the windows when a thunderstorm would roll in – and our long driveway was always full of endless chalk art and hopscotch games. As an adult living in beautiful Del Mar, summer holds a somewhat different meaning for me. The salty breeze whips through my hair as I enjoy sunset dinners at Jake's, my shepherd romps around playfully at Dog Beach, and the concerts are packed with musical fun at Powerhouse Park. And let's not forget the races – rich with history and always brimming with excitement. In this issue of Del Mar Lifestyle we bring the dog days of summer to your doorstep. We showcase our favorite summer artists in this issue, and we meet the owners of Broken Yolk, San Diego's longtime favorite breakfast spot. We are also very excited to take a peek inside Del Mar's exclusive music experience, KAABOO. As summer winds down, we look at all of the exciting summer activities for you and your family to enjoy before everyone heads back to school. Please enjoy our "endless summer" edition, and I wish you a fun, joy-filled August. I look forward to seeing you in September! A huge thank you to the artists who allowed us to take an intimate dive into their work, the KAABOO music festival founder and staff, and the Broken Yolk owners who have been truly wonderful to work with. We at Del Mar Lifestyle wish you a blissful end of summer!

Around Town BELLY UP SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR It’s a big year for the Belly Up in Solana Beach, which was recently named the 78th Assembly District’s 2015 Small Business of the Year. California Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins honors stellar businesses in her district each year, according to the San Diego U-T. This year, she had high praise for co-owners Phil Berkovitz and Steve Goldberg for their hard work and vision. The Belly Up, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, has welcomed an extraordinary number of renowned acts including The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Buffett, Maroon 5 and Willie Nelson. As the U-T notes, Dave Hodges founded the Belly Up in 1974, and Goldberg of Rancho Santa Fe purchased the venue with partner Berkovitz in 2003. BellyUp.com

BROKEN YOLK TO OPEN IN DEL MAR Southern California’s favorite breakfast spot is coming to Del Mar in the Beachside Plaza. Broken Yolk Del Mar’s menu will feature all of the local favorites and even signature drinks created by the owners and mixologists. The design is all custom and reminiscent of a day at the beach. With its homemade vibes and healthy, coastal perspective, the Del Mar’s new Broken Yolk is a great fit for our community. Don’t miss the Grand Opening party on Aug. 17. Bring the whole family.

CARMEL VALLEY 5K GETS A THUMBS UP Carmel Valley’s fourth annual 5K recently got a thumbs up from the Carmel Valley Community Planning Board for a Jan. 24, 2016 start. The Del Mar Times reports that last year’s 5K successfully raised $40,000 in donations for local schools, bringing total community donations in terms of proceeds from the race to $100,000. The 2016 race course will start at Canyon Crest Academy, cruise along the new Manzanita trail and then along Carmel Valley Road. Instead of taking place on a Saturday, as in previous years, this year’s race will take place on a Sunday to help reduce potential traffic issues. The Bay Club Bash will feature bounce houses, live local music, dance performances and a silent auction. CarmelValley5K.com

BROKEN YOLK COMING TO DEL MAR!

ARTICLE ROBIN EDWARDS | PHOTOGRAPHY BROKEN YOLK

The new Del Mar location will feature both breakfast and lunch.

Broken Yolk's specialty cocktails rely on fresh herbs and seasonal fruits.

M

cKenzie and Randy Corrigan already own two thriving Broken Yolk Cafés – in Oceanside and in Carmel Mountain Ranch – but they have been scouting for a location in Del Mar for years. Finding this spot is their greatest delight and happiest moment, they agree. Growing up as beach kids in L.A. and La Jolla, they’ve been raising a family in Carmel Valley and loving life in Del Mar. You can find them at Dog Beach with their dog Ty and son Connor, at the race track, dining at Sbicca, Jakes, L’Auberge and shopping – but spending time with friends and family is what they cherish most. McKenzie was a first grade teacher in Del Mar before opening their first restaurant. Del Mar Broken Yolk is elegant in shades of gray, sage and cream; McKenzie jokingly refers to the new restaurant as her "second baby." John Gelastopoulos, the original owner of the first location in Pacific Beach 36 years ago who later franchised the brand, supports McKenzie’s beachside theme with new design aspects. McKenzie notes that having a developer for a dad helped her develop a passion for design. The creativity of the counter area with bartenders, multi level space, and Hamptons-style interior feels like a different restaurant with the same great food we have come to expect and love from Broken Yolk. The Corrigans plan for two outdoor patios fit with awnings, fans and heating so that diners can enjoy Del Mar's fresh air. And for those waiting for a table, the plaza's newly renovated spaces are neat and welcoming. Neutral-toned tile, cozy patio tables, and taupe-and-cream striped umbrellas provide plenty of room for relaxing. The corner also boasts a new water fountain with a ledge the perfect size for perching with a cup of coffee. The nook is criss-crossed with tiny black lanterns, and planted with palm trees, white tea roses and potted succulents. Each restaurant creates their own specials, so look for some unique menu items in this location. They will be introducing an "8 under $8" lunch menu, bringing in new splashes of taste such as coffee-rubbed hamburgers on brioche buns, an Italian-inspired salad and premium breads and meats. El Cubano, with its shaved ham, melted swiss and spicy mustard mayo spread, also looks delicious. Shareables on the menu include carne asada nachos and boneless buffalo wings. Sides include veggies, mac and cheese, homemade kale-and-broccoli coleslaw, and a salad loaded with candied walnuts, cherry tomatoes and Provolone strips. Specially prepared cocktails will use fresh produce and herbs, including mint, ginger and watermelon, to complement breakfast and lunch items. "This is all quality," McKenzie says. "We peel our own potatoes – 90 percent of our menu is made right here. We have fresh squeezed juices, specialty coffees including a messy caramel latte. We like to use what's fresh." Randy and McKenzie plan to raise funds for the Del Mar Unified School District during the soft opening, and the Grand Opening is scheduled for Aug. 17. Hours will run from 6 a.m. through 3 p.m. Come on in for breakfast, lunch, mimosas, coffee and meet McKenzie and Randy, who will be overjoyed to show you around. hat began as an inspired idea after a long night around a Del Mar hotel fire pit with like-minded friends – a few beers and some tequila shots may have been involved – has transformed into the region's biggest and sparkliest new music draw. Enter KAABOO. From that casual late night gathering, an idea for a unique music festival emerged that will transcend all others. KAABOO will make its debut over the course of three exciting days from Friday, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept. 20, and promises to go the extra mile when delivering a coastal cornucopia of sights, sounds and “mix-periences” that will truly intoxicate the senses. To be held at the Del Mar Racetracks and Fairgrounds, KAABOO will offer incredible entertainment by some of the best in the music business, mouth-watering foods and some top-notch experiences that guarantee this event will become an annual destination of mind, body and spirit. Does that sound like a lot? It is a lot. When you first arrive, if you sense an exciting, imaginative, creative and upbeat ambiance, then please don’t waver from that conclusion. Two years in the making, founder and entrepreneur Bryan 14

Del Mar Lifestyle | August 2015

Gordon can barely contain his enthusiasm when it comes to welcoming folks of all ages to this grand musical affair. “We have created a whole weekend of exploration, discovery and fun,” Gordon says. “It will be unlike any other festival in terms of all the experiences we offer along with the refined quality of services, and the San Diego area is a perfect place for this event because of the great weather, great people and fun vibe.” While the 100+ performers slated across seven stages at KAABOO that will include No Doubt, The Killers and the Zac Brown Band (VIP pass holders will be treated to a special Thursday night performance by Ed Kowalcyzk, opening for Sheryl Crow), the 350 acres comprising the race track and fair grounds will host multiple outdoor and indoor attractions atypical of most music festivals. Its prime location makes it easy to access local bars and eateries, like the Brigantine, Pacifica Del Mar, Agave del Mar, or En Fuego Cantina. And of course, the beach is directly across the street should you opt for a mid-festival ocean plunge. Among the premier attractions will be the Humor Me Comedy Club, a Vegas-style club with indoor seating, air conditioning and a front-fac-

ing stage. A contemporary art fair staged throughout the venue will feature the work of more than 80 contemporary artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, installation artists and jewelry designers who have been hand-selected and curated from a nationwide pool. Additionally, KAABOO will offer Artwork, an indoor arts showcase. And what’s a great festival without food? Guests can enjoy everything from a high-end healthy food court to food trucks, along with 18 local restaurateurs serving samples. Further, this scrumptious fare can be artfully paired with a wide variety of wines, craft beers, spirits and cocktails. “Whatever drink you can imagine can most likely be served at KAABOO,” Gordon says. Local restaurants in the Del Mar/Carmel Valley area supporting the festival include Searsucker, Cucina Enoteca, Agave Del Mar, Poseidon at the Beach, Pamplemousse, Kitchen 1540 – L’Auberge, and Ruth’s Chris in Del Mar. KAABOO is just the kind of experience in which you can simultaneously lose yourself and find yourself. Get your tickets now, since organizers are expecting a full house. “We anticipate that this will be the beginning of a very long and exciting run for the festival,” Gordon says. “And I am blessed to have a team of amazing and experienced professionals who have done so much to make it happen.” For more information on this event, go online at KaabooDelmar. com. SUMMER LOVIN’ WAVING GOODBYE TO SUMMER ARTICLE SHEILA WRIGHT

C

linging tightly to the final weeks of summer break, or ready to get those kids back in school? Whichever it is, Del Mar and the surrounding North County offer fun ways to fill those remaining days. THE COOL LAGOON

Get the kids on a kayak, canoe, paddleboard, pedal boat or aqua cycle – or power up the family with a Wave Runner rental at the Carlsbad Lagoon. Older kids can cruise the blue with wake boarding, water skiing or tubing lessons. SALUTATIONS TO THE SUN

If it’s been a frantic summer filled with activities, re-center with some yoga by the sea. Adults and kids 10 and older can do sun salutations on the sand with Valerie from Yoga Six on Sundays, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the beach between the 18th and 19th Street entrances. For little yogis, or those who find balancing on the sand too challenging, The San Dieguito River Park offers outdoor yoga by the lagoon for all ages on Sunday, Aug. 16, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. PARK IT

Gather some friends for a small picnic or round up your neighborhood for an all-day barbecue bash at one of the great North County Parks. If you can’t pull yourself away from the beach, Powerhouse Park combines a playground, large grassy area for picnics, with the beach a few steps away. San Dieguito County Park boasts an expansive, dog-friendly park with basketball courts, baseball fields, trails, duck ponds, playgrounds and barbecues. Up north, Carlsbad Aviara Community Park, provides multiple play areas, plus a baseball field and basketball courts, with barbecue areas that can be reserved. You can also explore the new Encinitas Community Park complete with play areas, skate park, dog park, soccer fields and baseball/softball fields. 16

GET WILD

SUMMER WITH THE STARS

Pack their hiking gear and lunch for a day in the wilderness at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Explore the trails and practice animal tracking skills, visit the museum or join the interpretive walk – then head down by the calmer north side surf for a picnic lunch. At the San Diego Botanic Gardens, the kiddos can go on a scavenger hunt in Hamilton Children’s Garden, find adventure in Toni’s Tree House, play in the dirt, build a fort, play music, observe birds and butterflies, build a boat, and find their way out of a maze. Entice them to earn prizes for hiking as part of the TRACK Trails: Kids in the Park program at San Elijo Lagoon. Wee ones can enjoy story time and a “surprise” on the third Tuesdays and Thursdays of the month, at 11 a.m.

Take in a film al fresco! Up will be shown at Carmel Mountain Ranch Park on Aug. 8, and Cinderella on Aug. 15 at Carmel Valley Park as part of the county's Summer Movies in the Park series. The night sky’s main summer event is the Perseids Meteor shower. Oakoasis Preserve is hosting a Meteor Watchers event on Aug. 8 from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Let the young stargazers stay up late for this show and bring coats, blankets, and cocoa to keep them warm.

ESCAPE THE SUN: BOOK IT TO THE LIBRARY

The Del Mar Library’s various events can fill the final summer days. If your kids like story time, science, magic, knitting, puzzles, chess, music, crafts, or dogs, you will find an event for them.

GIVE BACK IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Kids will develop community pride as they help preserve natural and cultural treasures of the San Dieguito River Valley Park coastal wetlands. The Conservancy Society has volunteer opportunities suitable for all ages. The whole family can help raise money for the fight against cancer in the Relay for Life on Aug. 8 and Aug 9. Enter your “relay team” and enjoy a campout in the middle of civilization at the San Dieguito Academy campus in Encinitas.

t's hard to resist getting into the water here in North County. Surfers, swimmers and paddle boarders of all levels are drawn to Del Mar’s azure surges. Visitor guides list “best” spots for enjoying the water, but you can explore Del Mar’s coastal strand and easily find a favorite place not listed in any guidebook. The city’s prime location makes it easy for residents to branch out along the northern shores seeking new spots for adventures, such as exploring tide pools or taking out a boat out for fishing or a sunset cruise. Many North County residents find excitement navigating the calmer waters at the Carlsbad Lagoon, coasting on the glimmering blue via kayak, paddleboard, canoe or pedal boat. Those with a need for speed power wave runners around the lagoon, or spend their day wake boarding, water skiing and tubing. Wandering south, La Jolla provides additional pristine waters for paddleboarding and kayaking as well as more colorful tide pools for visiting with underwater residents. The Birch Aquarium, run by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, can provide more close encounters with sea creatures and a chance to learn more about their vibrant habitats. For a closer look, take a trip under the sea at the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park or La Jolla Cove for more interaction. Snorkelers can float through this crystal-blue neighborhood to swim with leopard sharks, rays and other local ocean residents – or venture on their own into the aquatic scenery. Scuba divers intensify the experience, immersing into deeper shades of blue. Experts know where to go, and the less experienced can take lessons and then dive into Scripps Canyon guided by North County Scuba Center, or tour the La Jolla kelp forest with La Jolla Dive & Snorkel. Along with this ocean swirling with life come those golden sands, setting the scene for a variety of fun. Sun-worshippers speckle the oceanfront and volleyball competitors pound the grainy terrain. OCEAN WATERS (CONTINUED)

Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 4 p.m. Pups love Del Mar sands, and Del Mar loves its pups. Canine compadres have Dog Beach on the north side, but are welcomed at most others, with leash laws that change for the summer months. Hounds craving waves might be seen getting some paddleboard lessons or training for the Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon in September. Then, there are those folks who prefer Downward Dog poses on the sand instead of bringing their furry friends. Valerie from Yoga Six invigorates and relaxes participants in a Vinyasa Flow class on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Del Mar Beach between the 18th Street and 19th Street entrances. Want to step away from civilization and the summer influx of tourists? Disappear on a hiking trail at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. From a .5-mile loop to a 3-mile loop, each with its unique features and diverse terrain – native plants, groves, wildlife tracks, ocean vistas, coastal wildlife – this unspoiled coast is a lush escape. Near the Torrey Pines State Beach is the Los Peñasquitos Marsh with its creek and lagoon accessible through the entrances operated by California State Parks or the Flintkote Trail off Sorrento Valley Drive. Another opportunity to escape includes the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, where visitors can explore the North County’s coastal native habitat. The reserve has seven miles of trails to trek, with guided day and evening walks, a nature center, and an observation deck. Such beauty can only be sustained with considerate tending. Locals and visitors alike can help by being respectful to the land and can consider volunteering at a nature preserve or joining a San Diego Coastkeeper Cleanup event. The next local event takes place at Cardiff State Beach on Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. – a perfect opportunity to help the area recover as the busy summer season winds down. Another way to appreciate the many facets of Del Mar is to distance yourself from the crowded summer streets by soaring above the coastline. Getting up, up and away will put the wonder of the Del Mar environs into perspective. Local com20

panies Skysurfer Balloon Company and Panorama Balloon Tours provide an enviable vantage point to appreciate the North County coastline. For thrills and excitement above Del Mar, a tandem paragliding or hang-gliding trip with Torrey Pines Gliderport guides can take you zooming over the Torrey Pines cliffs. Concluding a day of North County adventure by watching an exquisite Del Mar sunset is not hard to do, no matter what season. The aural punctuation of the occasional train lacing through the coast or the multi-colored hot air balloons dotting the distant inland sky often get lost in the background of the evening grind. Not surprisingly, Del Mar offers unique settings for viewing the sunset. Seagrove Park’s Coast Boulevard location makes it easy to grab some to-go nibbles at one of the nearby eateries, including those located on Camino Del Mar. A bench on the grassy bluff serves as a front row dinner “table” for the day’s curtain call. The Del Mar Foundation Summer Twilight Concert series continues at Powerhouse Park, with most shows on Tuesday evenings. An early dinner at The Poseidon or Jake’s can precede a walk to the park for enjoying the sunset. The Foundation’s First Thursday’s Music series kicks off Sept. 3. Those who were lucky enough to get season tickets before they sold out can head to the Powerhouse at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy wine and cheese at sundown. The vantage point from Scripps Bluff Preserve serves as a reward for making the climb up from North Beach. Facing inland, you can see the sky progress through darkening shades of blue. Facing the sea, you can enjoy the reds, oranges, yellows and pinks trailing our most famous star as it sets on the final moments of a Del Mar summer.

Healthy Lifestyle CHRONIC PAIN RELIEF

Floating Toward Wellness ARTICLE GLENN STOKOE

About 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, defined as pain that lasts longer than six months. The emotional toll of chronic pain can also make pain worse. Anxiety, stress, depression, anger, and fatigue interact in complex ways with chronic pain and may decrease the body's production of natural painkillers. Scores of people have had relief from the effects of chronic pain through floating. Some studies have demonstrated that deep relaxation stimulates the production of the body’s own opiates or pain killers known as beta-endorphins. The elevated endorphins along with the healing benefits of magnesium (there are more than 1,000 lbs of epsom salt in the tank) and the fact that the central nervous system is not fighting with gravity during a float, all work together to relieve and in some cases eliminate pain. BETTER SLEEP

Sleep problems, including insomnia and sleep deprivation, are common. Good sleep is necessary for optimal health and can affect hormone levels, mood and weight. It is very common to hear reports from people that they had one of the best night’s sleep after a float. Advocates of this therapy believe that the deep relaxation and absorption of magnesium reset the body’s Circadian Rhythm (our internal clock tied to sleep – wakes cycles) helping to completely regulate sleep patterns for restful sleep. In one study, psychologists from Sweden’s University of Karlstad partnered with a workplace wellness program to study the effect of floatation therapy in generally healthy adults. Approximately half of the individuals were randomly selected to participate in a series of 12 floatation therapy sessions (about two per week for seven weeks), while the other half were placed in a control group that did not include floating. At the end of the seven-week period, all of the participants completed a second round of questionnaires—and the results were very noticeable in five areas. Individuals who had experienced floatation therapy reported significant increases in sleep quality and optimism, while their levels of stress, depression, and anxiety levels dropped notably compared to those who did not float. For more information about floating, go to FloatNorthCounty.com or call 858.925.6069.

Bricks for Building Your College Funding Plan BUILDING A FUTURE FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

C

ARTICLE THOMAS BLOTTENBERGER, CFP®, CHFC®

ollege costs continue to skyrocket – at a pace that far exceeds the rate of inflation. But there is a bright side to planning for college expenses, and it’s getting a little brighter all the time – thanks to federal tax breaks that can make paying for college more affordable. The key point to remember is that you can create a college funding plan brick by brick by combining a variety of investment accounts, tax benefits and financial aid sources. Here is a quick guide to get you going: • 529 Plans – State-sponsored versions of these plans are now available in all 50 states, and you aren’t limited to the plan of your own state. In a 529 Plan, you set aside after-tax dollars on behalf of a beneficiary, and earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis. Distributions are not taxed, if taken for qualifying education expenses. As the account owner, you maintain control of the account and may change beneficiaries, subject to restrictions. In addition to state-sponsored plans, private colleges also may set up a form of Qualified Tuition Plan that allows tuition to be prepaid. • Education Savings Accounts—These accounts allow annual after-tax contributions of up to $2,000 per child per year. Distributions made for qualifying education expenses are tax free, and the costs of high school or elementary school tuition may qualify. • Loans or Withdrawals from Permanent Life Insurance—Parents often find it convenient to fund part of college costs by taking loans or withdrawals from permanent life insurance contracts – i.e., life insurance with a cash value. In most contracts, loans may be taken tax free. • Traditional IRA Withdrawals—If you have a Traditional IRA, you can make penalty-free withdrawals for purposes of paying qualifying college expenses for your child, grandchild or spouse (or even yourself). Ordinary income tax will apply on the amount withdrawn. • Roth IRA Withdrawals—If you have a Roth IRA, you can make income tax-free and penalty-free withdrawals equal to your

contributions (i.e., basis). Withdrawals in excess of your basis are distributions of earnings and are subject to ordinary income taxes unless you are over age 59 ½ and your Roth IRA has been open for at least five years, however, the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty will not apply if the withdrawal is used to pay for qualified higher education expenses. • Federal Tax Credits—Many parents can use federal tax credits to meet a portion of the children’s educational costs. The American Opportunity Tax Credit applies in the first four years of post-secondary education. It’s a tax credit of up to $2,500 and applies to the cost of tuition, fees and course materials. Up to 40 percent of the credit (a maximum of $1,000) is refundable – meaning even if you owe no income tax for the year, you can get up to $1,000 back from the government if you qualify for this type of credit. • Deductible Interest on Student Loans—If your child needs education loans and you repay them, you may qualify to deduct up to $2,500 of the loan interest per year. • Employer-provided Education Benefits—Some companies have set up programs that allow the organization to contribute education benefits on behalf of workers and their children. Federal law currently allows up to $5,250 of employer-provided education benefits to be excluded from taxable income. • Financial Aid—Today, more and more students are applying for financial aid. In most cases, students must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this type of assistance. Your financial professional can help you learn more – and help you identify specific solutions that may work best to help you reach your long-term financial goals, based on your personal situation. ost of us know how good it feels to step into the ocean, but funneling that feeling into something beautiful is a different kind of challenge. Meet three North County artists whose great gift is an eye for the ocean.

Susan Wickstrand's "SUMMERTIME"

“I love what I do and have been very fortunate to have been able to be a full-time artist for over 25 years now. I have an amazing list of collectors from around the globe and most of my clients also seem to also love the outdoors, beach culture, Southern California, Hawaii, and travel as much as I do.” – Susan Wickstrand

Parting Thoughts

The Sweetness of Summer WORDS EMILY VIZZO

I

grew up on the coast and there's no denying that summer starts to get especially sweet in August. Summertime in Del Mar is a very lovely thing. Gone is the May gray, the June gloom, and the firecracker pomp and circumstance of July. August is a long, lazy exhale. Beach towels are a bit sandier, and frayed. Bathing suits have been dipped in saltwater and swimming pools a thousand times. My flip flops are little ghosts of their former selves, and I love them for that. Recently I took a stroll through downtown Del Mar, enjoying the summer’s Spanish lavender, potted succulents and cheerful chalkboard signs. A big scoop of Pacific Ocean was visible between the streets. The L’Auberge garden was thick with white roses and ripening kumquats. At Sea Grove Park, families clustered at the sea-facing benches, watching surfers paddle through agave surf. Others shared sandwiches below Board & Brew's giant flowering jacaranda. Every year I look forward to the Perseids meteor shower. This year it peaks on Aug. 11, when lucky skygazers can sometimes see hundreds of meteors from the comet Swift-Tuttle streaking across the sky if the night is dark enough. In Italy on Aug. 10 each year, there is a special star-gazing festival called La Notte di San Lorenzo. Millions of Italians step outside to watch for falling stars with their sweethearts. One legend associates Perseids with gold-showered romantic interludes between Zeus and Danae, mother of Perseus. Now Italy might 34

Del Mar Lifestyle | August 2015

be more than 6,000 miles away from Del Mar, but I think this tradition is worth transplanting. August is the month for revisiting summer wish lists. September will be here soon; next summer is a far away. But there’s still time to go for a walk around your neighborhood, smelling the star jasmine and lemon trees. There’s time for another stingray shuffle, another paddle out. There's time to lie down in the grass with a kid you love, looking for crawling things. I know what’s still on my August wish list. I want to pull on the same pair of beloved, faded cutoffs for three days straight. I want to catch another reggae show. I want to take my nephews down to the beach and play in the water. I want to spend an evening on the patio at Sbicca, as I did recently, watching a sunset and digging into fresh seafood. I want to check out a stack of Shakespeare and Toni Morrison from the library. I want to take an unabashed siesta with the fan on high. And on Aug. 11, you'll probably find me on a blanket with my favorite stargazer, toasting what we can see of the dazzling Perseids. I am hoping for an earthgrazer–one of those great, tearing meteors that drop across the sky in a bright white seam. This year, we'll have a waning crescent moon coming up shortly before sunrise. If you want to join me, step outside on the 11th. Give it your best shot. Turn off the lights, step out onto the porch or into your backyard. Then look up.
