his is made plain in how the city expands, and roads widen and new neighborhoods spring up overnight. Even the original Draperites who were born here seem to stay their whole lives, parceling the land they grew up on to make room for new neighbors. Yep, Draper is the place people want to be. And people are what make a community. The mountains are gorgeous for sure, and nothing beats an early morning vista across a pastoral patch dotted with cows and sheep or the electrified anticipation at a local trailhead; but people are here mostly because of other people, and the spirit of this place is dictated by a community rich in both history and possibility, as well as a sense of good old-fashioned, small-town values. This sense of community runs deep. I don’t go a day without someone telling me how much they love reading about a place they thought was special, and now with stories, know it for a fact. Draper Lifestyle wants to up the ante on that. We are a publication about community— which means we're all about YOU. About where you live, how you live and the things that are important to you. We are passionate about our readers and we cultivate each issue with the people of Draper in mind. Who are you? What are you interested in? What do you like? What should we do next? These aren’t rhetorical questions; we really want to know. So let's talk; let's make this a conversation. Head to our Facebook page—Facebook.com/ DraperLifestyle—and let us know what you think. Then hang around for our new monthly giveaways (donated by local businesses) and updates on community events. As another year opens up before us and our lives bend naturally toward new beginnings and betterment, we express to you a desire to be our best—Draper’s best. And the best publication we can be. Likewise, we hope this issue will inspire you to be your best too, with a family that gets fit together, a health club and a way to give back.

BIORESTORATION OVERCOMING TRAGEDY, THIS INNOVATIVE CLINIC IS CONTINUING TO DO GROUNDBREAKING WORK IN RESTORATIVE HEALTH ARTICLE KELLY ERICKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY MARK THACKERAY
B
iorestoration Medical Clinic and Spa is the place to go for a whole body makeover in Utah. The visionary Dr. Robert Moody and his wife Stacey opened the clinic in 2004 with the goal of turning back the clock on aging. A doctor of osteopathy trained in cosmetic surgery and anti-aging, Moody had an incredible array of experience that enabled him to provide unique services at his specialized clinic. He did just about everything. Moody was the clinic. And then the unimaginable happened: it was a plane crash and in an instant, he was gone. Moody, the man who loved life and adventure, took a solo flight on a foggy afternoon in January 2015 in his single-engine airplane over the Great Salt Lake and never returned. To his family and friends, the news was absolutely devastating. It also left a lot of uncertainty at the clinic. How could the company continue in business when the founder and main doctor was gone? It was not an easily navigated obstacle; Moody was irreplaceable. The clinic was his vision. He had nurtured and directed the clinic, with the assistance of his wife Stacey, over the past ten years with great success. It was not like Stacey Moody could just find another doctor with an identical set of skills. However, Stacey did go into business with Rob Horsley, and Horsley crafted a solution that has maintained the integrity of the clinic and perpetuates Moody’s legacy of integrative health. He has hired multiple doctors who specialize in different fields to meet the needs of the clinic's patients. Currently Jeffrey Nelson, DO, Christopher Kelly, MD, Amy Killen, MD, Thaddeus Jacobs, ND, Nicole Kelly,

PA-C (who trained with Moody) and Laurie Childs, PA are all part of the staff that provides care at the clinic. Each doctor specializes in a different aspect of anti-aging and restorative health. It takes a team of doctors to continue the work of the irreplaceable Moody. “He was just a remarkable man,” says Stacey. There are a plethora of options for prospective patients: bio-identical hormone replacement, platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP), cosmetic surgeries and aesthetics. It is a surprisingly large clinic tucked away in a nondescript strip mall on 123rd South and 450 East. Horsley says the clinic has had wonderful success in treating a wide variety of issues. He was even a patient. “A few years ago, when I was about 33 years old, I was working so much and I never had any energy. When I went home, I would sit on the couch and fall asleep. No energy. Dr. Nelson, who is our medical director now, put me on a program and in just over a year’s time I have lost 75 pounds. Now I go home and I want to play with my kids and I'm more active,” he says. Nelson helped him to get his hormones balanced through natural methods. Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy is another treatment option that Moody helped to develop nationwide. It utilizes platelets from a patients’ own blood to rebuild damaged tendon or cartilage. It has been successful in not only relieving pain, but also in jumpstarting the healing process. Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy is done in an exam room and takes less than an hour. The patient's blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge for 15 minutes to separate the platelets. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the damaged portion of the tendon or cartilage with the guidance of
an ultrasound machine. (EmoryHealthCare.org) Biorestoration Medical has had many success stories with PRP on athletes, including skiers, basketball players, and MMA fighters. Considering how invasive and costly joint surgery can be, PRP is a great alternative to try before going to a standard method of treatment. The clientele for Biorestoration Medical is mostly people in the community, but it does get a fair share of people from out of state who come for the groundbreaking treatment the clinic provides, and word has spread without any advertising. The people of Draper recognize and are willing to utilize these kinds of services. The average wait time to get in is about three months for standard treatments, although cosmetic surgeries can be done sooner. When you walk through the doors at Biorestoration Medical, the atmosphere is peaceful and the legacy of Moody lives on, with the help of a lot of doctors.

They are our future. Unfortunately, some stray into delinquent behavior and substance abuse. Through Communities That Care, we adopt and implement evidence based strategies to turn the tide and give our youth every opportunity to be successful contributors to their community,” says Draper Chief of Police Bryan Roberts, who brought the organization into the Draper Police Department. Jeremy Piehler, pastor of youth ministries at Draper’s South Mountain Community Church, joined DCTC as a board member because of his 13 years working with young adults. He said Dupree and DCTC are highly invested in making Draper a healthier community. “Gaile is energized, she’s got a vision and she is a good leader. What is important in leadership is the ability to get people on board with the vision and work towards realizing it. That is what Gaile does,” he says. thing-is-perfect-here attitude. I see a lot of hurting people and families. DCTC helps communities create an environment for students, teens, and families to thrive.” The foundation of the coalition is data driven and gleaned from sources such as SHARPS (Student Health And Risk Prevention Survey) to determine risk factors specific to Draper. It is also based on prevention science, the philosophy that when you know what the risks are you can put protective factors in place to prevent the problem. The end goal is to implement evidence-based programs, therefore reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors within Draper. The organization then finds creative ways to address and educate parents and teens on prevention and promoting healthy behaviors. DCTC representatives have been at parent-teacher conferences and sponsored Prescription Drug Take Back day. Recently, DCTC partnered with ParentsEmpowered.org and the High School Mountain Biking Association at a biking event in Draper. In partnering with local bike shops, it provided free bike tune-ups to kids, while also providing “tune-ups” to parents— including a lanyard with tips on substance abuse prevention. Annemarie Christopulos, general manager of Draper’s Treehouse Athletic Club and DCTC board member, believes knowledge is power when it comes to serving the community and keeping it healthy. “Many community residents haven’t been in junior high or high school for 20 plus years and aren’t aware of the substances and pres-

n the chilly predawn atop the 10,023-foot Haleakala volcano on Maui, brothers Kellen and Blake Hullinger walked in silence. As the sun rose, the stillness was broken by a group of native Hawaiians chanting a welcome to the new day. “It was breathtaking. We felt so in the moment. We weren’t caring about our video games … we were just like, ‘Wow!’” says Kellen. “It was crazy awesome,” adds 9-year-old Blake about this highlight from the family’s three-month journey to Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia this past spring. The Draper family, including parents Tamara and Brett, traveled slowly through each area, walking or biking whenever possible, staying with host families and making connections with locals and with each other in active, fun ways. That trip and their philosophy of fitness through fun and connections are detailed in their blog FitFamilyRobinson.com – a play off the adventures of Swiss Family Robinson. “We hope to inspire people,” says Tamara, a university health and wellness lecturer, professional dancer and lifelong advocate for mental and physical well-being. “We are a free resource for families who want to enjoy fitness and adventure. We set out to create a community to connect and motivate each other.” For example, readers might see Tamara in a “Stop the Car and Stretch” video filmed in windy Whangarei, New Zealand on a long road trip, or read an inspirational article on how to plan a family biking trip exploring Zion National Park. “This is not going-to-the-gym-type fitness, but rather a lifestyle of getting out as a family and walking, exploring and being active,” says Brett, a writer, trainer and avid bicyclist. He stresses that family connections made through fitness and travel are vital to a child’s well-being now and in the future. 18

“Your kids watch what you do as a parent,” he says. Their trip put that philosophy into action. In one of their favorite places – Maroochydore, Australia – they rode bikes everywhere, frequented local businesses and learned to surf. “We got to know the people who lived there. It made us feel at home,” says Tamara. Connecting also means giving back. As they travel, they offer fitness classes for the community, film free workouts, and the boys play their guitar and ukulele as a thank you to each host family. “It is the mindset that matters, not where you are. Anyone can have a Fit Family Robinson adventure,” says Tamara. The overall emphasis needs to be on fun and connecting that with fitness, she says, citing walking or riding bikes to local eateries as an easy-to-do example. The Hullingers say the trip was a success and that a good attitude prevailed, even while living together 24/7. “We had so many cool experiences that there was no need to argue,” says Kellen. Many of those experiences were documented in educational videos the two boys shared with their school. Calming exercises kept attitudes up, too. Stretching and moving to music at the end of the day was a great way to unwind as a family. “This was another level of connecting, one different from hiking or eating together,” says Tamara. Her boys held onto her gently as they swayed to the music. “I’ll cherish those moments forever.”

Treehouse Athletic Club A Place to Nurture Families, a Place to Nurture Health ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KELLY ERICKSON

mall town and home grown is an apt description of the Treehouse Athletic
Club (TAC). Since 1998, it has been an important part of Draper. The club is a gathering place for residents and a leader in healthy and active living. When it opened, 60% of the members had never ever been a part of a fitness club and now this well established, family-centered local business is creating a generational legacy, a place designed for everybody. “There really, truly is something for everybody. We have the kids area, but we have split it up and changed it for different age groups. We are here to help people have healthy life-

She has been coming since she was little, starting in the Nest, the daycare center that starts taking babies as young as 6 weeks old. “Since I was a kid, I have been going to the Treehouse. I have always gone there. I remember going to the Nest. Now when I walk in, I know everyone. It is a small-town feel. Every kid from my high school has a membership.” The small town feel is created by attentive and amiable employees. They know the members and care about them. She knows just about every kid who walks through the door and makes sure to give them a high five or ask how they are doing. “I say hello to every kid that comes through the door, if I can. I

An
Tradition BLOWING THE ROOF OFF WORDS MICHELE CARR
I
have some very good friends who have a curious annual tradition. The celebration actually begins in early December at Christmastime, as they gather together as a family to carefully and creatively fabricate elaborate gingerbread houses. Each member designs his or her own gingerbread masterpiece, taking care to make the structure sound. Literally hours are spent as blocks of gingerbread are stacked and cemented together with sticky white frosting. Peppermints, gum drops, candy canes and various other goodies and sweets are used to adorn these amazing creations. After placing the final finishing touches and the frosting hardens, each gingerbread creation is placed in a position of honor around the house so all can appreciate its splendor during the entire festive month. Then, on December 31, the family regathers--this time with a different type of anticipation. Jeans and parkas are worn instead holiday clothes. The Christmas carols are replaced with music that’s a little livelier as the gingerbread houses are all taken down from their various locations. Then, each gingerbread house is rigged and stuffed with fireworks and taken outside to a large open space. With steam streaming from their mouths, family members stand outside to await the New Year. When the clock finally strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, those

beautiful gingerbread creations explode, and are destroyed and burnt as the family cheers on. Personally, I love this tradition. Besides being a great way to spend time with the family and create memories, it is a pertinent reminder of what January is and what it means and of the need to let go or “destroy” those things in your life that weigh you down. It speaks to a new beginning. In previous New Year holidays, I have felt an unspoken internal pressure. Somehow, in the post-holiday fatigue and fog, I am expected to generate and add a long list of New Year’s resolutions to my already hectic life. By February, those good intentions are often discarded with an aftertaste of failure. Perhaps a more productive focus would be symbolized by this gingerbread tradition. Instead of increasing my to-do list, I can remove something. I can ask: What habit or behavior can I eliminate that detracts from my mental, physical, social, or spiritual well-being? What can I give up? These questions will help identify an action that holds me back--that I wish to be free from. And then, when I find that habit or behavior that I have been holding so tightly onto, I need to remember the final act of those carefully constructed gingerbread houses, and “blow the roof " off of it, off of all the bad habits, off the things I want to let go of, while my loved ones cheer me on. Happy New Year!
