Things aren’t what they seem. And, a basket. Y

ears ago, during the “chicken boom” (can we call it that?), when everyone was getting chickens and adorable coops were all over Pinterest, I wanted chickens too—and could think of nothing more lovely that heading out each morning in soft light and dew-drenched grass to gather fresh eggs for breakfast. In my fantasy I’m carefree and holding a basket to collect the eggs and life is lovely. And possibly sepia-colored. Naturally. #nofilter. Then I heard about the chicken poop. Specifically, that there was lots of it. Being hardly a fan of poop and thus deterred, my chicken-fantasy went the way of the egg (read: it rolled off the counter and fell splat). But it turns out, if you’re thinking “green,” Michele Carr’s essay on page 38 tells us that the poop may be one of the best parts about having chickens. The chicken’s waste is garden manure; manure grows food. For the chickens! That’s just green life—green living—going on like that, in one eternal round. In this, our Green Issue, we show how things aren’t always what they seem, and how sometimes (most times) they’re just gosh darn useful. You will find repurposed books with covers gleaned from vintage childhood tomes, and the transformative cycle of local green waste, and the dream-filled future of a creative downtown space, utilizing an old Draper mainstay and making it new. The issue highlights what things can be, on the second go-round. Do you love that as much as I do? I grew up in northern California, a place green before we called it that, where elementary school art class would include making paper from discarded classroom scraps, and though rough and textured, was so fun to send a note on; and a shopping trip to San Francisco would require toting around a small shopping basket filled with lunch in the crook of my arm, and the goodness came after lunch was eaten, when the basket, emptied, now housed a new treasure acquired along the afternoon. So there’s a nostalgic sensibility, I guess, of liking the idea of what comes next, and that possibility. But also, the life after life concept just feels like a gift… Never intended, a simple bonus. It may also be where my sepia-colored egg basket fantasy comes from. But with or without eggs tucked inside, I’m holding tight to it, to the possibility of what comes next. Enjoy your April, friends! INDOOR TENNIS FACILITY A community meeting regarding the possible building of an indoor tennis facility in Draper was held on February 8. It was a very informative, well attended meeting that went over multiple concepts of how this proposed facility could work. Much of the talk was not about whether it would be successful or not, but rather, what steps need to be taken next to turn this idea of an indoor tennis facility to become a reality. The city has verbally allotted land in Galena Park for a tennis facility. The Tennis Enthusiasts are currently planning on raising money in an attempt to form a Co-Op. This would allow for the facility to be fully public but also give the citizens of Draper the ability to run it as its own because it would be owned and run by those who

care about it most. The discussions at this initial meeting were centered more around making it work than how it would make money, which is a refreshing change from the business climate we often see today. Though the concern was more around community than returns, that doesn’t mean the plans discussed did not have well thought business structure. Since this would be a brand new facility, the plan was to start small and scale up if demand indicated it to be necessary. The current plan is to create six indoor courts and four outdoor courts, tech enabled to maximize court time and minimize costs. This will be a state of the art facility that the city of Draper will be proud to call their own. LA BELLE VIE BRINGS NEW MODEL TO HEALTHCARE ARTICLE LINNEA LUNDGREN PHOTOGRAPHY MARK THACKERAY
A
s a lifelong oil painter, Kelly Lance paints portraits that capture her subject’s natural beauty. So it was no surprise that she brought that artistic
perspective to her work as well. Lance is the owner of La Belle Vie Medical Care and Aesthetics practice in Draper that offers a unique, personalized approach to beauty and healthcare. “My philosophy is that we are all aging. How we age is optional. Rather than the overdone look, let’s work with your own natural beauty. A customized approach can take years off the person with a refreshed natural look,” she says. At the same time, Lance wants her customers to feel beautiful on the inside too, so La Belle Vie also provides primary care to help address and treat issues that stand in the way of good health. “We get to take care of people inside and out.” La Belle Vie, which means “the beautiful life” in French, offers a selection of non-invasive, non-surgical aesthetics procedures, including medical grade facial peels, Botox injections, fillers and radio frequency ablative services, all of which are done by trained medical staff. “Many people are searching for non-surgical approaches for that fountain of youth,” says Lance, who notes surgery has down time and can be expensive. Lance desires to provide a new approach to beauty and health care. As a family nurse practitioner and a nurse for over 30 years, she remembers a time when doctors knew their patients and took the time to listen. “This is my clinic and I operate it the way I want,” says Lance, who lives in Draper. That means friendly, personalized care where communication is key and patients wait little or no time for appointments. The nurse practitioners at the practice take a “holistic approach to each patient,” says Lance, looking at their diet, exercise regimen, home life and health background. “People talk and we give them the time that they need,” Lance says. The La Belle Vie staff, “is friendly, looks you in the eye, and asks questions and listens.” On the beauty front, she appreciates how they suggest beauty treatments, but not insist upon them. She’s been so impressed that she sends her husband in for his yearly check-up. Besides the regular beauty treatments, Lance is excited to offer cutting-edge technologies in skin and body care procedures. These include KYBELLA, which reduces fat below the chin. A RED BARN FULL OF BOOKS CLEVER BUSINESS UPCYCLES OLD BOOKS AND MAKES THEM RELEVANT AGAIN ARTICLE KELLY ERICKSON PHOTOGRAPHY MEREDITH FORREST KULWICKI
R
oller skates and a red barn have proven to be the perfect ingredients for an ingenuous new business
venture in the Salt Lake valley. Red Barn Collections is a business that saves old books and gives them new life as unique and charming journals. The nascent business was founded by Brooke Burgee and has flourished due to the efforts of many, including her life partner Ben Bowen. “I went home to Vermont and took care of a friend with leukemia after her transplant. My friend Amelia and I made these as Christmas gifts. We went out and collected books when she felt well and made them as a project.” The project was taking discarded books, like The Cat in the Hat or The Hardy Boys, and turning them into journals by removing the spine, adding quality art paper, and rebinding it with metal wiring. Burgee and her friend would meticulously cut each book and reassemble it. Recipients were thrilled with the one-of-a-kind creations and it tapped into all of Burgee’s passions--books, upcycling, environmental responsibility, writing, and creativity. Burgee stayed in Vermont for five months. She helped Amelia regain her health and avidly collected vintage and unique books and stored them in the red barn that is on her family’s property. When Burgee returned to Salt Lake, her mom threatened to get rid of the red barn book collection. There were just too many books. This is when the idea of an upcycled book journal business started to take shape. She originally came west to take graduate classes at the University of Utah in Positive Psychology. All of her classes emphasized the huge health benefits of journaling and now Burgee had a way of promoting this ideal with her unique new business idea.

Draper Lifestyle | April 2016
The successful hobby was about to become a full-blown occupation when Burgee went roller skating in Liberty Park and met a fellow roller skater, Ben Bowen. They took a few laps together around the park and instantly became friends. The roller skates brought them together and over the next month, she shared her idea of upcycled book journals and he loved it. Bowen is a Utah native and with his help, the two decided to get a vendor permit and see what would happen. Wasting no time, they set up a table at Liberty Park and gave it a shot. The mindset, according to Bowen was, “Let’s just go out there and see what happens, to overcome that one little hump of fear and to actually sell them.” It was all the encouragement they needed. After that first day, they decided to start selling at farmer’s markets and arts festivals in the area. It has now grown from one small room to a 2300 sq/ft office space on 330 West 700 South in downtown Salt Lake City. The sales have been astounding from a modest first day of selling $80 to a business that is able to offer flexible and self-paced work opportunities during the busy summer and holiday months. Ben Bowen also wisely enrolled at Westminster College in the business school to learn as much as possible about business. At the beginning of this year, Red Barn Collections won two awards from Westminster College because of all of the many positive aspects of the business--providing flexible work opportunities for employees, improving the environment through recycling, and most importantly, getting consumers to write because of the beautiful journals the company handcrafts. Many new doors have opened since the start of Red Barn Collections. The business is now filling large orders for corporate buyers in other states and word is spreading about this charming product that is both useful and nostalgic. It is a wonderful and unique gift idea. “We are going to have a booth at the Los Angeles Festival of Books in April,” says Burgee enthusiastically. It is the largest book

festival in the country and the perfect market for this kind of product. They hope to sell lots of journals and also make important contacts for future business transactions. Not only does Red Barn Collections help the environment by recycling old books and making them beautiful and useful again in a new way, but it is also dedicated to giving back to the

community by donating many journals to local literary programs, homeless shelters and medical centers. This is a business that is making Utah a more beautiful place, one page at a time.

he Godfrey’s are big dreamers and soon, one of those big dreams is going to become a reality. The historic Draper Park School, a landmark situated on Pioneer Road between Fort Street and 900 East, and once a gathering place for the Draper community, will be reborn as the Dream Factory at Draper Park. Under the visionary direction of new owners Shelley and Gregg Godfrey, and partner Andrew Renfro, the school will be the center of the town again, maintaining the integrity of its historical roots while pushing the frontiers of creativity, originality and quirky fun. Just a few years ago, the city was on the brink of demolishing the historic school. It was an asbestos-ridden edifice with no clear utilitarian purpose. Demolition was the path of least resistance, costing the city only $300,000, versus millions for a full renovation. The expenditure could not be justified and for a while, well-meaning Draperites cried out to save it through petition and promotion at local events like Draper Days, but time was evaporating quickly. At about the same time, the Godfrey’s were in search of new office space for their company Godfrey Entertainment. Their sagacious neighbor Jon Lee, owner of J.P. Lee Fine Jewelry on Pioneer Road, suggested that they buy the school. It wasn’t really even for sale. Yet, the idea was appealing. The Godfrey’s contacted the mayor to see if it was possible. He said that the Draper Historic Preservation Commission had first rights of refusal on it. Wasting no time, they immediately contacted Katie Shell, a commission member, to get permission to buy it. Shell was thrilled and fully supported them. The sale was a Christmas miracle because two weeks before the January 1, 2015 demolition date, the Godfrey’s became the owners. Gregg Godfrey, an unabashed adrenaline junkie, is a film studies graduate from the University of Utah. He had a dream to make movies and for six years he and his wife Shelley toughed it out in the cutthroat entertainment world of Hollywood, banging on doors, trying to get into the film world, to no avail. Fearless and relentless, Godfrey decided to go out on his own and make movies himself. With the full support of Shelley, he bought editing equipment and made a documentary in 1995 about the history and legends of the motocross scene called Legacy. They lived in a trailer park in Valencia, California

and Shelley would pick up copies of the movies and ship them off to different distribution centers. “We got sponsors and we just went for it,” remembers Shelley. After the success of the documentary, Godfrey started making action sports movies that were funny and filled with crazy stunts, with titles like Children of a Metal God and Supercross Exposed. People loved it. This was before the X Games became an American mainstay and Godfrey was on the forefront of this type of real-life, death-defying entertainment. He also discovered Travis Pastrana, a 14 year-old motocross phenom. Godfrey knew he was special and soon had him starring in his own movie, Travis and the Nitro Circus. The series was a hit, Pastrana was a bona fide star, and with new partner Jeremy Rawle, a high school friend and the eventual assembly of daredevils including Special Greg, Erik Roner, Streetbike Tommy, Jolene Van Vugt, Andy Bell, and Jim DeChamp, the Nitro Circus brand was solidified into a gang of lovable, albeit completely nutty, thrill-seeking misfits. MTV asked Godfrey’s group to film an Evel Knievel special with Johnny Knoxville. MTV loved it and this led to their own hit show in 2009. As FMX World describes it, “Nitro Circus revolves around the world's greatest freestyle motocross rider Travis Pastrana and his crew of top action sport athlete buddies and enablers. Imagine if Evel Knievel and five of his equally insane buddies had a television show where they tried to top each other's stunts week after week. That's Nitro Circus.” Now there is a successful touring circuit and a televiCONTINUED > sion spin off based on the tour. April 2016 | Draper Lifestyle

Gregg Godfrey jumped his semitruck 166 feet to set a new world record and beat the previous record by more than 100 feet during the festivities at Evel Knievel Days in Butte, Montana.
As for Gregg Godfrey, he has had his own daredevil success independent of the Nitro Circus crew. In November 2007, he won the Baja 1000, a solo 1,280 mile off-road motorbike race, in world record time, passing his buddy Travis Pastrana near the end of the race when Pastrana’s engine blew. Godfrey also holds the world record for jumping a semi-truck 166 feet on a ramp, which he set last year in Montana. In 2014, the Godfrey’s sold a majority of their shares of Nitro Circus. Gregg Godfrey still has a creative voice in the franchise and part ownership, but is not bogged down by the day-to-day details. However, he is still just as tenacious as ever and has big plans in store for Godfrey Entertainment. Part of that revolves around the Dream Factory at Draper Park. Godfrey is once again knocking on Hollywood doors, trying to sell a show about his crazy family called The Godfrey Clan, a new brand for the business, and they hope to shoot many scenes from the Dream Factory, a sort of home base for the reality show, which would be similar to Duck Dynasty or Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory. It would be about the 12 nieces and nephews, including their kids, who were essentially crash test dummies for Gregg, growing up in the crazy stunt world, but focusing on family dynamics. The stage and gymnasium would be used for filming the show and other random projects already planned or yet to be imagined. 22

Shelley Godfrey is the creative commandant behind the school’s transformation. She is dedicated to reusing as much of the original building as possible and maintaining the integrity of its historic charm, with some modern updates as well. At first they just planned to rent out the unused space, but as the building has started to take shape, the vision has expanded into something more ambitious and synergistic. “We want it to be this kind of boutique-style place of creative minds, so we aren’t just going to rent it to a doctor’s office or something. Everything has to be original and we want it to be a creative space.” Shelley imagines having things like a recording studio, high-tech internet firms, interior designers, photographers, a wood shop, and tons of educational classes, to name a few. She wants original and creative retail firms to be like-minded, companies that echo the originality and creativity of the Godfrey Entertainment brand. The Dream Factory will also have on-demand office spaces that can be rented for short amounts of time. In addition, there will be unique food truck type restaurants in the 50s wing and an old-fashioned candy kitchen. As Katie Shell has observed, “What Shelley is doing is so exciting. She will make it look new and fresh and appealing, a very unique space.” The dream is big and with the success of the newly minted school, it will truly become a treasured center of the city once again, a place where new dreams can be realized for the Godfrey’s and the entire community.

Belcher believes the bountiful selection sets his shop apart, along with their emphasis on keeping the “fresh” in the flower. “I am always amazed when I hear people say they don’t like flowers or don’t want roses in an arrangement because they die too quickly. Financial Buzz
Top Four Steps to Secure Your Financial Future
AILSA HELPS CLIENTS REACH FINANCIAL GOALS
I
n our 25 years of helping clients simplify their financial lives and reach their goals, we have found a few common steps that clients take that make them successful. While everyone’s situation is unique, the vast majority of people could benefit from taking these steps.
SECURING ADEQUATE INSURANCE COVERAGES
It makes no sense to accumulate substantial wealth if you have not protected it in the case of something going wrong. You should look at getting life insurance as soon as there is someone depending on you and/or risk involved if you should pass away (for example: mortgages, raising kids, business debt, etc.). Insurance coverages should be reviewed on a regular basis. New debts, or additional kids, might warrant getting more insurance. The majority of people should look at term insurance as opposed to whole and variable life insurance products. Depending on your personal circumstances, other insurance coverages such as long term care and disability are important as well. We have seen families devastated by a spouse not getting enough insurance. The surviving spouse and children live a very different and more difficult life than the departed spouse had ever hoped or planned for.
Part of this plan entails hiring a good team of advisors that will work together to ensure this plan comes to fruition. The earlier a plan is created in someone’s life, the better the chance they will have of future success.
HAVE A SPECIFIC PLAN
START AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE
Like most worthwhile pursuits, it is hard to end up successful without first creating a plan to get there. The main financial goal that most people share is to have enough money to live a comfortable and secure retirement. Currently, 36% of all adults have no retirement savings at all, and 8 out of 10 do not have enough saved. We help our clients decide what their personal retirement number is to live their retirement dream, and then create a plan to get there. We have found that creating and sticking to an individual plan empowers our clients to know they are on their way to a successful retirement. This allows them to stay disciplined through market storms like the one we are currently going through.
A person who starts saving and investing early has a few advantages. The first is that they get in the habit of living below their means and putting money away for their future. This discipline benefits them in their life and gives them peace of mind knowing they are on their way to achieving their goals. The second is that they allow compound returns to have more time to work for them before they retire. The earlier someone starts saving and investing, the less they will have to save over their life to reach their retirement number.

PAY YOURSELF FIRST
This might be the most important step of all, and it is both an actual step and a mindset. Financially successful people look at saving and investing for their future as just as important as their monthly bills they have to pay.
They will contribute to their investments first and then use the remaining money to live their life. A few years ago, we sat down with a new employee who was thinking about enrolling in their company 401k plan that we managed. After getting to know this younger woman, we asked how much money she had in her bank account at the end of each month. Her answer was unfortunately common, $0. We explained this “pay yourself first” principle, and she decided to start contributing a little money. After one year, we met with her again and although she still had no money left at the end of each month, she had $1,200 saved for her future in her 401k.

We quickly responded that we could not possibly have a chicken because we lived in a crowded neighborhood. However, after some investigation, we discovered that our city and neighborhood did allow a homeowner to own hens, but no roosters. But how could we ensure that we selected a hen? There is normally very little in all that fluff to differentiate the male from the female in the chick stage. Hence, we told our son that we could accept a chick, but if we did end up with a rooster he must promptly give it away. He readily agreed and we adopted “Chirp.” As the months passed, Chirp started to grow more feathers around his head and made funny noises like a voice-changing, pubescent teenager. We were all dreading that first declaration of Chirp’s masculinity--the cock-a-doodle-doo. Then, one morning our son raced into the kitchen and proudly declared, “This is the happiest day of my life!” In his hand, was an egg no bigger than a golf ball. Chirp was a hen! So when we moved to Draper a year later, Chirp was one of the many possessions that we brought to our new home. We soon acquired some additional hens to keep Chirp company. Our family has had chickens ever since. Admittedly, out of all the animals we have ever owned, chickens have been the easiest to care for. They like to feed themselves. They devour pesky bugs from the garden and will often "work" right beside me as I am weeding--ever ready for me to uncover a nest of earwigs or larvae. Unlike teenagers, they go back in their coop at night without a curfew or complaint. But my favorite reason to have chickens is that they help to reduce our family's food waste.

Draper Lifestyle | April 2016
As a family of six, we discard a lot of food. We try to minimize this as much as possible, but there are always uneaten bread crusts, left-over noodles, and partially eaten fruits. We have learned that chickens love to eat those foods. In fact, most reference materials claim that in addition to feeding them chicken scratch and mash, you can give them almost any food that a human would eat, and many that we would rather not, like grubs, worms and slugs. Due to this discovery, in our sink we now keep a “chicken basket.” Instead of throwing apple cores, wilted lettuce, stale grain and unpopped popcorn kernels into the trash can or down the garbage disposal, those items all go straight into the chicken basket. Daily this bowl quickly fills and is then emptied when our children feed and water the hens. They empty the chicken basket in the coop and gather fresh eggs for that day. For us, it is a symbiotic cycle. The hens eat the foods that we would be disposing of and somehow magically turn those leftovers into beautiful, tasty and protein-rich eggs. Even the chicken manure can be used as a potent fertilizer in the yard and garden. The chickens eat our discards and we use theirs. If you are interested in raising or owning chickens, I would suggest first researching your city ordinances and neighborhood regulations. Many areas have rules about what you can own and how they need to be raised. For example, Draper does allow residents to own hens, but has detailed regulations regarding this practice. You can find specific information for Draper at Draper.ut.us/DocumentCenter/View/182 . Also, as you would do for any pet, study up on the needs and behaviors of chickens. Ask those who have experience. I have found the staff at the local IFA store to be very helpful and knowledgeable. If you do decide to raise poultry, I wish you success and enjoyment in this eggciting adventure!
