aybe your travel plans to Europe got thwarted. Your anniversary cruise was indefinitely rescheduled. Or the big family reunion at the beach got COVID-canceled. Some families find they have available funds to buy new cars. What are they buying? “The biggest and fastest growing market segment is crossover vehicles,” said Wanda Cronic Howell, Owner/Dealer at the Cronic Automotive Group. “This is true both in national data, and at our three dealerships locally in Griffin.” Wanda points out the success of the Nissan Rogue, as an example. She cites the Rogue’s improved performance, adept ride and handling, impressive 26 miles per gallon in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

“It’s great value for money, especially when you want to take a roadtrip. The Rogue is the perfect vacation car. People are choosing to avoid flights and airports right now. If you can get there for less while driving, isn’t that ideal?” Wanda Cronic Howell believes in the Rogue, not just for her clients, but also for her family. It’s the car she bought her youngest daughter. Wanda appreciated the safety and the value. A 2021 Rogue at Cronic Nissan starts at only $25,650, one of the most affordable crossover vehicles. “That’s a fabulous price,” said Wanda. “And it’s been ideal to carry small pieces of furniture. It would even be good for someone who wanted to do antiquing.” Wanda also cites the incredible technology NISSAN

on the Rogue. “It’s got the largest headup display in its class. And so many high tech features to improve navigation, and the user experience. The safety features are also great, like Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection and Rear Automatic Braking.” Wanda also mentioned the four-door intelligent key, which prevents people from fumbling to open doors and starting the car in shopping center parking lots. She concludes, “This is a time when people prioritize family. A crossover vehicle like the Rogue at Cronic Nissan can take your family to great places and keep you safe while you drive.”

No one and, I repeat, NO ONE had ever given me that answer. You see, the thing is, that is MY favorite movie, like, of all time! Nothing else even comes close. In fact, I place that movie in a category all its own. I was hooked. I love discovering people's favorites. Another one of mine is the song, "Beginnings" by Chicago. I love everything about it. Meera, who emigrated from India in 2012, studied home science at the same college Kamala Harris’s mother attended. After becoming a home economics teacher, she noticed students who needed help they were not receiving. She had learned about physical disabilities and those labeled “pagal”, which means “mad”, but Meera knew there were other needs. Meera eventually became the director of a special needs school, working with students who had dyslexia and autism. “It was my passion. It’s still my passion,” she said. Once here, she joined Southside Support for special needs families, volunteered at the Joseph Sams School, and conducted art and dance therapy workshops for area schools. Meera has donated dinners to local nonprofits to use for auction items for the past several years. “[Since my husband passed last year,] cooking became my therapy and my way of giving back to the community,” she said. Here, she has learned to incorporate local ingredients in her dishes but doesn’t compromise on spices. “There is no Indian cookery without spices,” she said. The secret of Meera’s delicious food, however, can’t be found in a spice box or a recipe. “I cook with my heart,” she said. “If you don’t have a passion and love for cooking, food will never taste right.” 12

THE SKINNY ON SKIN CARE (CONTINUED) and daily home use of physician-grade products. A typical skin health diet, coined as “the core four”, that Katie Belle recommends includes a cleanser, an exfoliant, an antioxidant and sunscreen. Exfoliants are used at night for repair and gentle removal of dead skin cells. Antioxidants and sunscreen (> SPF 30) are daytime products that protect against free radicals and the environment. The skin health treatments offered by Katie Belle and her team are designed to elicit specific skin results. HydraFacial deep skin treatments cleanse the skin and remove toxins. Microneedling stimulates collagen growth under the top layers of skin in an area called the Dermis and helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The Skin Society strives to educate the local community on the importance of skin health and help its members achieve goals by offering medical-grade treatments and skin health products. “Since the skin takes care of us, we owe it to take care of our skin,” reminds Katie Belle.

SOUTHERN CONSERVATION TRUST, IS BRINGING NATURE TO OUR COMMUNITY.
WEBSTER DEFINES CONSERVATION AS “PREVENTION OF WASTEFUL USE OF A RESOURCE”. I had to read that a couple of times and let that really sink in. Land is definitely a resource and wasteful use of land should certainly be prevented. How much do you know about conserving land? Admittedly, until I sat down with Katie Pace Quattlebaum, Executive Director of Southern Conservation Trust (SCT) in Fayetteville, I knew nothing about it. I had been to a few of our popular Fayette County nature areas, but now that I know the what, the why and the how behind these beautiful properties, I have a newfound appreciation for them. Southern Conservation Trust is focused on making sure that everyone has access to nature. They develop public nature areas, provide environmental education and conserve tens of thousands of acres of land, waterways and valuable habitat each year, and they have been doing so since 1993.

FOR LOVE OF NATURE (CONTINUED)
In 2016, after running the marketing department for another nonprofit, Katie felt led to leave that position and search for another job, one that would harmonize with her love for the outdoors. "My husband Tom and I were talking about having a baby and I decided to leave that position [as it involved international travel]. I was looking for something that fit my outdoor lifestyle and this position came available." When Katie was hired as Executive Director in 2016, the organization had 4 local nature areas; Line Creek, Sams Lake Bird Sanctuary, Flat Creek and Morgan Grove, all of which were in disrepair or closed to the public. One of Katie’s first orders of business was to hire a Parks and Education Director, Nick Kilburg. “Nick could go in and just fix stuff when it needed to be fixed.” The 4 nature areas sprung back to life. Katie set about the business of creating awareness for her land conservation mission and she leaned into her knowledge of public relations and social media to do it. If anyone has ever had anything to do with a nonprofit organization, this is no easy feat, but Katie’s passion for her purpose is great and the community responded. Today, Southern Conservation Trust is managing 46,000 acres of land in the Southeast and is likely to add 10,000 20,000 more acres in the near future. “We are working in Texas and Colorado and as far east as Virginia." As a 501(c)3 and a qualified land trust in the United States, SCT is able to hold conservation easements. This means they can expand their conservation efforts outside the state of Georgia. "We are the fastest growing land trust on the East coast,” Katie says with a smile.

HIKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL GREY EAGLE TAKES US ON A JOURNEY THROUGH ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST SCENIC TRAILS.
RON’S JOURNEY BEGAN IN 2006 WHEN HE RETIRED AS AN AIRLINE PILOT. Despite his new role as a retiree, Ron still felt young. What’s one to do when their energy level doesn’t match their new status in the world? If you’re like Ron, you walk the Appalachian Mountains Trail, a series of lead-in trails culminating with the Appalachian Trail. Ron is passionate about the Arthritis Foundation and marrying this with his desire to hike the trail only made sense. His journey was supported by donors who would give to the organization that means so much to him. Ron kept

while I change his name from Ron to “Grey Eagle” because no one goes by their actual name on the trail. Grey Eagle prepared for this journey by diving into literature, calling upon experienced hikers and frequenting REI. He also stocked up on freeze-dried and home-cooked dehydrated meals as well as high-protein snacks. Keeping his energy level up and his backpack weight down made this a tricky undertaking. Practice hikes allowed him to perfect the right ratio of weight to nutrition. After a year of intense preparation, Grey Eagle began his hike on the Alabama Pinhoti Trail, a popular 137-mile hiking trail and southeast region Appalachian Mountains Trail Connector. He was filled with excitement and nerves as he took the first of some 6,400,000 steps that would be taken. “The hardest part was when I watched my wife drive off and the car disappeared over the hill. Then the enormity of the adventure really sunk in.” What followed was a 6-month journey,

DO YOU SEE MORE INJURIES IN JANUARY DUE TO FOLKS RESOLVING TO TURN A NEW LEAF AND EXERCISE WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING? "Actually, no. In the first 3 months of the year, more people come in because of stress. More patients tell me, “Hey I want to change my lifestyle” or "I've been so overwhelmed with headaches and stress from the holidays!" People want to feel better so they make resolutions for changing things that they’ve put off and they’re not going to put it off any longer. Having your body in good working order can only help alleviate stress. That's my primary goal." WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO EASE INTO A WORKOUT ROUTINE? "First, you must understand that you need to recover if you’re going to work out. You have to walk before you can sprint. Don’t think you can jump right back into where you left off. Take baby steps and understand the importance of recovery between sessions. Stretching, rehab, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy... something to make sure you are recovering the way you need to." WHAT ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC CARE IS MOST BENEFICIAL TO YOUR PATIENTS? "Overall wellness. Getting the body to function the way it needs to so that when stress comes, your body is equipped to handle the stress that comes with it. Your immune system, your stress levels, your overall comfort and mobility all play a part. We do a full-body approach to chiropractic care but it really depends on the person. So if treatments are not going the way we need them, we adjust our plan. It may be dietary or something else." WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE US TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE? "We offer other services besides Chiropractic care like deep tissue massage, corrective exercise training and spinal rehabilitation. We collaborate with other healthcare professionals in the community to offer a well-rounded care routine and approach." 34
