WILLIAMSON COUNTY STUDENT ENTREPRENEURS FIND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY IN PANDEMIC Perfect ACT Scores. National Merit Scholar candidates. Winners of prestigious math and science competitions. These are the 13 students from three Williamson County high schools who are helping other students survive the pandemic academically through their online company Wilco Tutoring. The idea emerged from the Williamson County Schools
Entrepreneurship
and
Innovation
Center (EIC), an elective course available to high school students across the county that pairs teams with mentors from the local business community. Three students – Brentwood High Senior Nelson Rose, on track to be the school’s valedictorian; Independence High’s Jacob Stromatt, a 2020 National Honor Society inductee; and Ravenwood High Junior Ana-Laura Morales, president of the school’s Culture Heritage Club – were originally working on other ideas but the pandemic provided a pivot point. Lodestone Legal Group intellectual property attorney Jeromye Sartain, the group’s mentor at the EIC, encouraged their shift in response to market demand, helping them set up the business and its operations. Now 13 tutors from three different high schools are offering video-based, one-on-one tutoring for K-12 students in subjects ranging from chemistry, geometry and English to ACT preparation. SHOWHOMES FRANKLIN OFFERS RESIDENTIAL STAGING Showhomes Franklin strives to take residential staging to the next level. Jamie Little and Karen Morford, both Williamson County residents, are the Lead Stagers for Showhomes Franklin. They do not just stage a home; they ensure that the home's unique qualities are highlighted and emphasized to capture buyers' interest and intrigue. Their homes are styled to be magazine-perfect in order to create an emotional connection with the buyers for a quicker sale at a higher price. For vacant homes, their professional team styles each home with high-end art, furniture, and accessories to ensure a luxury feel for every price point. For occupied homes, they work with homeowners and realtors to de-personalize and elevate the existing decor into an on-trend style. Most recently, Showhomes Franklin staged a luxury Brentwood home that was on the market for 70 days as a vacant listing without receiving any offers. Even though the home was stunning, buyers just could not envision their furniture within the empty spaces. Ten days after staging by Jamie and Karen, the home was under contract. FRANKLIN TOMORROW, COMMUNITY LEADERS ESTABLISH PEARL BRANSFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Franklin Mayor Dr. Ken Moore announced in December, the creation of a scholarship fund in honor of the late City of Franklin Alderman Pearl Bransford, for an individual or individuals pursuing the study of health sciences through Columbia State Community College. The Pearl Bransford Memorial Scholarship is being created in conjunction with Franklin Tomorrow and the family of the late Alderman Pearl Bransford, but is open for contributions from the public. Franklin Tomorrow will collect initial donations and it is the intent of organizers to endow the scholarship through Columbia State Community College in the first quarter of 2021. Alderman Bransford was a resident of Franklin for more than 35 years, spending almost 25 years as an elected official in Franklin, first for 11 years on the Franklin Special School District Board of Education and then 13 years as a member of the Franklin Board of Mayor and Aldermen. In being one of the first donors to the fund, Mayor Moore said he and his wife Linda felt the establishment of a scholarship in Alderman Bransford’s honor was in keeping with her support of education, the health sciences, and Columbia State Community College. LAUREN RAINEY TENNEY MOVED TO NASHVILLE
FROM
DURHAM,
NORTH
CAROLINA IN 2005 TO BE A COUNTRY MUSIC STAR. "I love performing. I love entertaining. I say I'm an entertainer by trade. I've been doing it my whole life. Ever since I was little." The singer/songwriter had achieved success with an album and hosted a tour with Rascal Flatts. But it was after she had her son Hudson in 2011 that her whole life changed. The now Franklin resident says, "I was questioning 'Do I want to be famous just to be noticed or to feel loved and accepted or do I really want to perform?' That was the start of me asking deep questions and really digging in to personal development. My life had taken a different direction. Time was of the essence to really contribute things God taught me. And to focus on being the best and most present mother and wife." Fast forward to 2020 and Lauren credits Henry Cloud, author of Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life for much of her own evolution. "Cloud says in his book, 'People change when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of

changing, and not anytime before that.' I can tell anyone the necessary steps to take in the personal development world and how to start doing that if they want to lose weight, or be a better lover, or be a better friend, or whatever, but I will also repeat Henry Cloud's quote. And that's ok. Just know nothing is going to change unless you're ready to change," adds Lauren. While she realizes self improvement can be a Herculean effort for some, she says the effort is so worth it. "Boundaries are not easy. You have to baby step your way in to it. I really wanted to have healthy, thriving relationships, so I had to practice, practice, practice boundaries. And when you are able to hold up a mirror and hold your peace and not get defensive, then the other person is having to hear themselves and look at themselves for the first time." She continues, "Boundaries are where I end and You begin. We own our own stuff. Boundaries protect you but they are not walls to keep everything out. It's like building a fence so we can see what's coming at us. We are responsible for what we think and how we feel. No one can hurt our feelings.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION GOES A LONG WAY FOR DR. WILLIAM PALS, ANIMAL CARE RUNS IN THE FAMILY. His father is a veterinarian, so it stands to reason that Dr. Pals would join the family business. In 2016, Dr. Pals opened Goose Creek Pet Hospital in Franklin. Four years later, the now thriving care center is where over 2800 precious pets get tender love and care. Because Dr. Pals splits his time between Tennessee and Indiana, he decided to bring on a partner, finding the perfect match in Dr. Walsh. Together the two have created a welcoming and caring environment at Goose Creek Pet Hospital, treating dogs, cats and various exotic animals. “From the moment you walk in, you should feel warm and invited,” Dr. Walsh tells Franklin Lifestyle. “Our front desk staff go above and beyond to learn everybody - they get to know your family. Preventative health care is one of the the best ways to ensure that your pet has a happy, healthy life and is a primary focus at Goose Creek Pet Hospital. “Come in and get an exam and get established as a patient,” says Dr. Pals. “We’ll start the first vaccine to protect your pet and send them home with the first dose of dewormer and heartworm preventative, along with flea and tick control. It’s a lot of work up front with puppies because they might have to come in every three weeks until they are four months old, and then it’s once a year after that,” he continues. “Then it’s time to have them spade or neutered.” “Whatever your priority for your pet is, that’s what we want to help you with,” adds Dr. Walsh. “Because everyone is different. I joke that you are coming into the
no judgement zone. We’re going to give you all the options and we want you to make the best informed educated decision, but we will support your decision no matter what.” Along with comprehensive preventative care, services at Goose Creek Pet Hospital range from dental cleanings, geriatric care and laser therapy to soft tissue surgery, infrared sauna therapy, grooming, boarding, and CONTINUED >

TOP 5 HEALTH CONCERNS FOR DOGS AND CATS:
1. Preventative care for puppies and kittens. It's much easier to prevent illnesses than it is to treat them.
2. Dental health. Affects 95% of pets. Keeping your pet's teeth clean is important to their overall health.
3. Household toxin exposure. For example, dogs can’t eat grapes, onions, garlic, dark chocolate or poinsettias. Ingestion could be fatal.
4. Parasite prevention, including heart worm disease, tick born illnesses, fleas and intestinal para-
sites. Parasitic infections can possibly infect humans as well as animals.

much more. When it comes to your fur babies, Dr. Pals and Dr. Walsh would also advise you to pay attention to how your pet is feeling. “One thing we see a lot of is GI upset, because dogs and cats eat things that people wouldn’t,” said Dr. Pals. “Sooner rather than later, talk to a vet if your dog is having symptoms and acting different. Pets hide illnesses. They hide pain. They want to act like everything is fine. By the time you notice something, they could be sick for a week. As soon as you notice, act on it.” For a full list of services available at Goose Creek Pet Hospital visit www.goosecreekpethospital.com

NOTHING IS MORE CHALLENGING THAN GETTING OUT THE DOOR TO THE GYM ESPECIALLY WHEN FACED WITH THE NEW PROTOCOLS LIKE MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING IN PLACE TO KEEP US ALL SAFE. Now not only are you fighting your (possible lack of) motivation but you have the chilly, gloomy and often icy weather of January to deal with. Even more of a nuisance is that the gym may have had to remove many of the conveniences that made getting to the gym so enticing in the first place; the steam room, sauna or juice bar. Now is the perfect time for a home gym; you can create one, update one or even buy a whole new home with a spectacular gym space. 813 Deercrossing is located on two acres in Nashville's quiet Oak Hill area. The house, which was built specifically for the lot, is on the market with the Cunningham Team at Compass. Truly a health fanatic’s dream, the home gym sits above the pool house that is housed in a separate building connected via walkway to the main house. No matter if you like to get your workouts done at 4am or 11pm you won’t wake the rest of the house. Aside from its location that allows full volume workouts at any time, being this close to the pool allows for a quick dip to warm up or cool down. An added benefit for those tired and aching muscles? The hot tub waiting to soothe any accompanying ailments. And who says fitness has to be strenuous? There is space for all kinds of gaming tables: billiards, foosball and shuffleboard. The large lot could allow for a putting green to be installed along with larger installments like a basketball or tennis court. May your 2021 health resolutions be more fun and closer to home.

KINDLI: THE CURE FOR THE SOCIAL DILEMMA A NEW DIGITAL PLATFORM THAT’S REVOLUTIONIZING SOCIAL MEDIA
Martin Diamond and the Kindli bus
IT WAS 2017, AND MARTIN DIAMOND WAS BRAINSTORMING. As the founder and CEO of VURIA, LLC, a digital media firm, he has managed the design and devel-
The Kindli App
opment of thousands of web and mobile projects, marketing initiatives, and media productions for companies around the world. Diamond was well-versed in the digital space, which is where the father of three saw something he realized he wanted to change. “My problem was looking at social media and seeing what I thought were so many things wrong with it, which I then sought to fix, to give it a purpose and make it better,” he explains. As of last month, what began as an idea launched as an app, website, and social movement. Kindli, as it’s called, is a platform with a purpose—and it’s ready to change the world. Kindli was built to focus on the positive and eliminate the negative. Yes, that means that there’s no bullying or hateful language, and there are no depressing conversations about news or politics. Instead, the narrative is on kindness and positivity. The revolutionary idea was created to propel a sustainable movement that impacts positive global change. Even in just its development stage, the idea of spreading kindness had a big draw. In that time, it attracted such founding members as professional baseball and football star Tim Tebow, three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, and WWE star Thaddeus Ballard (also known as Titus O’Neil). And Darleen Santore, also known as Coach Dar for her work with professional athletes, also signed on as the CKO—Chief Kindness Officer. CONTINUED >

KINDLI: THE CURE FOR THE SOCIAL DILEMMA (CONTINUED)
“I have served as the U.S. Ambassador for Global Pay It Forward Day since 2015, and as a board-certified occupational therapist and mental conditioning coach, helping the well-being of others and creating positive global change has always been my personal mission. When I was asked to partner with Kindli as Chief Kindness Officer, I knew this would be an incredible opportunity to make an impact, spread kindness, and help boost the mental well-being of people who use social media daily. I believe the world needs Kindli and is ready to create a positive and tangible shift in humanity,” Santore says. So, what exactly is Kindli? While in some respects it looks similar to the social media apps that most people are already familiar with in that they can post, like, and comment, Kindli is distinctly different. Everything on the site is positive, and kind acts are celebrated. It is designed to be a safe space for people to connect, and where they can be inspired or inspire others. KINDLI CARDS In addition to the platform, Kindli provides a home for the “Pay It Forward” movement with real-world Kindli Cards™, a proprietary, patent-pending method of tracking kind acts worldwide. Diamond explains them by using the well-known Starbucks drive-thru “pay it forward” experience. Except in this scenario, a Kindli user would leave a Kindli Card with the barista, and ask them to give it to the car behind them when they tell them their order was paid for. The card— which has no details on it that would personally identify the card’s giver—has a QR code. If the person who was on the receiving end wanted to say thank you, they could scan the card with their phone and send an anonymous thank you message, photo, or video to the Kindli member. That member could then share that message to their Kindli profile to inspire others to perform their own acts of kindness. Those involved do have the option to reveal their identity and connect on the platform if they want. Not only were the cards created to inspire kindness, but to track the number of kind acts they inspired, as well. Kindli founders have a mission of inspiring one billion acts of kindness around the world. MAKING IT A POSITIVE PLACE Anyone can create an account on Kindli and browse for free, but there are safeguards built in to ensure that it remains a safe and positive place. In order to comment or post content—the first time only— members are required to make a one-time, one dollar payment, which Kindli then donates 100% of to one of its charity partners, which include organizations such as United Way Worldwide, Boys & Girls Clubs of America,ASPCA, GLAAD, Special Olympics, Disabled Veterans, Susan G. Komen, Tim Tebow Foundation, and Bullard Family Foundation. This feature is designed to not only eliminate fake accounts, but, since the purchase will be linked to an in-app purchase, enforce accountability and strict content guidelines. The proceeds also help with another of Kindli’s goals—to donate one billion dollars to nonprofit organizations. Diamond agrees that inspiring one billion acts of kindness across 58

the globe and donating one billion dollars to charity are big goals, but says confidently, “Yes, they are lofty goals, but I think with this platform we can reach them. The basic premise of Kindli was to create a positive alternative for social media where people can interact and walk away feeling good about the time they spent on the platform, and maybe feel a little more positive about the world and life in general, rather than what I saw was just a downward spiral of negativity and a very hostile, very unfriendly environment that was being fostered and just increasing in ‘traditional’ social media,” he explains. “It really just was trying to figure out a path to fix what I saw were the major flaws in those platforms that were allowing them to be abused and taken over by hate, and, essentially, allowing them to become a very, very toxic environment.” REDEFINING THE INFLUENCER Kindli also aims to change the current perception of what it means to be an influencer on social media. Currently, influencers are generally popular and are often endorsing products. Kindli hopes to alter that definition to someone who changes others’ behavior and inspires them to do good things, and truly makes a positive impact on those around them. “On Kindli, rather than putting the focus on just likes and popularity, our emphasis is more on what have you done to make a difference, and how much of an impact are you making?” Everyone from companies to celebrities to individuals will be able to show the world how much they are an influencer by the number of Kindli cards they’ve given out, based on the number that will be linked to their profile. SPOT THE BUS Kindli also now has a dedicated bus, which goes around with what they call their “Street Team,” and often a celebrity, making random stops to do random acts of kindness. This was recently on display when Tebow and the Street Team took the bus around Phoenix, Arizona and stopped at a gas station, where they surprised customers by paying for their gas, and Tebow actually pumped their gas and cleaned their windshields. They also stopped by a teen football practice, where Tebow gave the team an inspiring speech, as well as a grocery store where they paid for customers’ groceries, and more. Kindli will also feature Daily Kindness content, a stream of feel-good stories, videos, and news. “I hope that this platform helps the well-being of people—their mental health—and it lifts up their spirits and inspires them to serve. I hope this is the platform they turn to, to be uplifted and inspired. After being on the site, I want people to leave it better than they started their day. This is going to change the word for better,” says Santore. Find Kindli at Kindli.org, or download the mobile app in the App Store or Google Play. CityLifestyle.com/Franklin

HOW END SLAVERY TENNESSEE IS HELPING HUMAN TRAFFICKING VICTIMS HEAL
IN THE UNITED STATES, IT’S HARD FOR PEOPLE TO GRASP THAT WOMEN, MEN AND CHILDREN, MANY OF WHOM ARE U.S. citizens, are still being sold into slavery. Human trafficking happens everywhere, and the people impacted by this heinous crime are often unseen and unheard. Here in Tennessee, there is an organization helping these victims transform themselves into survivors. Once victims are identified by law enforcement, hospitals, mental health co-ops, or addiction services, to name a few, End Slavery Tennessee representatives step in to provide them first with basic needs, such as housing, food and clothing, and then counseling, addiction services and educational assistance. 62
Franklin Lifestyle | January 2021
“No two survivors are the same,” says End Slavery Tennessee CEO Margie Quin. “Some of the women, and men and boys, have suffered extreme nutritional deprivation and sleep deprivation and they come in with some really significant medical issues, so we address those needs.” Many also need addiction counseling as well as complex trauma counseling. Margie understands human trafficking in all its manifestations. As a former assistant special agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), she’s seen its many horrors in her 26-year career. “I worked on trafficking for 11 to 12 years, and had supervised the firstever statewide trafficking unit with TBI,” she says.

To gain a deeper understanding of what trafficking is and how it happens, Margie advises people to listen to its podcast called “Someone Like Me.” There, survivors speak about their experiences. Like most nonprofit agencies, End Slavery Tennessee is always in need of funding and volunteers. Besides money, people can donate gift cards for Walmart, Target, grocery stores, and other places or choose an item to buy off its Amazon wish list. There are also seven community groups, including those in Brentwood and Franklin, that hold various fundraisers and awareness events. To support the mission, donate funds, connect and volunteer with a community group, and learn about other ways to get involved, go to EndSlaveryTN.org.

SIP AND SAVOR THE AFTERNOON AWAY
JANUARY IS NATIONAL HOT TEA MONTH, AND THE PERFECT PLACE TO CELEBRATE THIS OCCASION IS AT MY THREE GIRLS TEA ROOM IN SPRING HILL. With its relaxing atmosphere and welcoming host, you’ll want to stay a while. “My goal is for people to just come in and relax,” says owner Pat Bruhn, who named the tearoom for her three granddaughters. “When I do a tea, they can stay as long as they want.” With its cheerful green and yellow color scheme, and collections of teapots, teacups, milk glass and other memorabilia, sitting at one of the five beautifully appointed tables is not only a special treat, but also a learning experience. “I like to go over the history of the teas and explain about the teas because a lot of people don’t know there is only one tea plant,” she says. Pat offers teas every third Tuesday of the month at 2:00. She also opens for special occasions such as showers and birthdays, and holds teas for book clubs and Bible study groups. CONTINUED >

“My teas are all fresh-leaf brewed,” she says. “I use nothing but leaves, and I think that’s what makes them special.” The teas are available for purchase as well. Pat always does a three tier afternoon tea. On the bottom tier, where you start, there are the savories, which usually consists of three types of sandwiches with fruit around them. The middle layer holds scones with clotted cream, and on the top tier are three different desserts. The offerings change depending on the theme that month. However, there is one item she always has. “Years ago, a lady gave me her shortbread recipe,” says Pat. “She told me that one day I was going to have my own tearoom and I’d serve this shortbread. And I do.” My Three Girls Tea Room 3355 Jim Warren Spring Hill, TN 37174 (931) 215-8171

They were ready to come home and tackle their life and their recovery. And within WEEKS, many of them were right back to using their old coping mechanisms (drinking, food, shopping, drugs, etc.) to continue to manage the very life, the very environment that had made them sick in the first place. And it began to dawn on me - what we are leaving grossly unaddressed in mental and behavioral healthcare in this country is social health, especially as it relates to depression and anxiety which are primary drivers for the maladaptive coping techniques. For several years, I tried various ways to help change my clients' environments outside of my office - in their homes, their schools, their places of work, but nothing seemed to ever really stick.
