And speaking of superheroes, let's dive into a topic that never fails to fill our hearts with immense joy and wonder: children and pets!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the sheer magic that children bring into our lives? They're like tiny bundles of pure happiness, capable of turning even the gloomiest of days into a sunshine-filled adventure. From their infectious laughter to their insatiable curiosity, children possess a boundless potential that can truly change the world. They're the ones who lay the foundation for our society, reminding us that kindness, imagination, and hope are the secret ingredients for a brighter tomorrow.
Let's not forget about our furry, feathery, and scaly friends—the pets that light up our lives like a thousand fireworks. These creatures of pure love and companionship have a magical way of transforming our existence. They teach us valuable life lessons, help us grow, and provide us with the most precious gift of all: unconditional love. And when kids and pets come together, it's a bond that can only be described as extraordinary. The friendships formed between them nurture qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Now, here's the deal: children and pets need us. They rely on our care, attention, and intention to guide them on their amazing journeys. So, my friend, I implore you to take this opportunity to pour a little extra love and affection into the children and pets in your life this month. Let your imagination run wild, embrace your inner child, and create moments that will be etched in their hearts forever. Together, we can make a difference and shape a future filled with joy, compassion, and endless smiles.
So, let's raise our glasses and toast to the incredible power of children and pets! Here's to the laughter, the love, and the life lessons they bring into our lives. May they forever remind us of the beauty and wonder that exist in this world.

FOR ALL THAT SUMMER TRAVEL!
Vacation season is in full swing in August, but that doesn’t mean that our nutrition goals have to stay behind at home!
We want to find a balance of finding enjoyment in what we eat, while also consuming foods that nourish and fuel our bodies to complete our desired activities.
While away from home, we are away from a kitchen; therefore, many, if not all, meals are eaten out at restaurants. Given this reality, my tips featured in April’s issue for eating out at restaurants are certainly applicable.
1. Don’t “save up” for a night out
2. Make your meal balanced
3. Eat seasonally
4. Take advantage of leftovers
5. Practice mindfulness at your meal
ARTICLEBY
1. Make reservations ahead of time – Set a concrete plan of when you will eat at least one of your meals. This will help to plan the remainder of your meals, while mitigating the amounts of times that you reach a point of starvation. This will help with maintaining mindful eating practices.
2. Check out the menu ahead of time – Since you are booking your reservation ahead of time, you can take that moment to look at the menu and plan how to make a complete, balanced meal based on the menu offerings!
3. Pack your snacks – Traveling with snacks is always a great idea. You never know if there will be a transportation related delay or if your planned excursion exhausted you out and you are hungrier than anticipated! Packing items like mixed nuts,
DR. CECE REEDERbeef jerky, peanut butter and crackers, a protein bar, or even fruit that doesn’t require refrigeration can help tide you over for your next meal – and keep the happy vacation mood lifted!
4. Stay hydrated – The act of traveling; whether by train, plane, or automobile, is taxing and often leaves individuals dehydrated. Packing your favorite reusable water bottle is a great way to ensure you have water readily available and it also serves as a method of measuring the amount of water consumed. If you are unsure about the water quality in your destination, I recommend traveling with a water bottle that has a filter!
5. Plan for your return – What’s the worst part of vacation? Coming back to reality, but by planning ahead and making these super easy egg bites, you have a high protein first meal covered! In addition to prepping your return meal, I also recommend prepping your grocery list. An easy way is, as you are cleaning out your refrigerator, write out your list.
1. Preheat oven at 400º
2. Place chopped seasonal vegetables in a large muffin pan . August vegetables: bell peppers, chopped broccoli, leeks, mushrooms, summer squash, and tomatoes
3. For meat lovers, you can also add sliced ham, bacon, or your favorite breakfast meat
4. Add desired shredded cheese, like mozzarella or feta cheese, into the muffin pan
5. In a separate bowl, combine one whole egg or the whites of 2 eggs, a splash of milk & stir
This is done per egg bite!
6. Combine egg white mixture into the muffin pan
7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden
8. Let egg bites cool and place in freezer safe container to have ready for when you return home!

The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary is a place where all beings know they are safe, and that humans are kind. Created to honor Catherine, who was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting, this sanctuary is the space that just keeps giving and provides so much goodness to the community. Locally in Greenwich, the sanctuary’s Senior Paw Project partners with Greenwich Communities to help seniors take care of their pets which can be expensive, especially for people on a fixed income.
As a young child, Catherine knew she wanted to work with animals. During play, she would be the zookeeper or the veterinarian, always gravitating to animal care roles. After Catherine’s death, the animal sanctuary was created almost by a fluke. In Catherine’s obituary it read donations can be made to the Animal Center of Newtown. Inadvertently Jennifer Hubbard, Catherine’s mother and president of the sanctuary, had dropped the word control when submitting it.
In a short period of time, four women who rescued cats were given $120,000 in donations in Catherine’s name. When they approached Hubbard, she knew she had to do something. It was as if Catherine was guiding them, and The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary was born.
The sanctuary’s mission statement is: The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary enriches the lives of all beings by promoting compassion and acceptance. By honoring the bond between animals, humans and the environment, we’re creating a kinder and gentler world for all. The sanctuary offers something for everyone, from a butterfly garden for pollinators, to school and corporate outings,
Catherine’s Butterfly Party, and the Senior Paw Project. Their main initiative for 2023 is constructing a sustainable building, for which they are currently fundraising.
“Catherine was six, she loved animals,” said Hubbard. “It was a perfect way to honor her.”
The sanctuary has partnered with Greenwich Communities-–recognized in 2021 as an Outstanding Community Partner—providing ongoing medical and pet food support to the pets of their older adult residents.
For many seniors, pets are more than pets, representing a part of their life with a deceased spouse or their children. The stress of providing care is significant as prescription costs and annual wellness examinations average $250. Even a minor financial challenge can leave their pet’s care compromised or ultimately surrendered to a shelter. The sanctuary works to eliminate that stress and provides veterinary wellness care, covering their pet’s medicine and food costs.
The Senior Paw Project works directly with affordable housing communities’ Residential Service Coordinators (RSC). According to Hubbard, “Often the process starts with a lunch and learn to share the resources available to all residents in the community. Older adults are asked to submit an application to their RSC who in turn coordinates with our Senior Paw Project Program to schedule services.”
Another way the sanctuary works with the public is through educational services. “We just welcomed Greenwich Country Day School students for a lesson on invasive plants and their removal,” says Hubbard.
The sanctuary has developed a sixth grade curriculum that is a full academic year study. Students visit in the fall to understand the

diverse components that create a meadow habitat. Then they choose and research one element during the winter. Explains Hubbard, “They are asked to consider what it needs to thrive and what is its threat. They become experts on that one thing and come back in the spring and validate their research.” Students write a paper and present their findings to the grade level.
The objective is both to conduct scientific research and also understand the interconnectedness of living things. One year, the local middle school held a state of the meadow fair instead of a science fair.
Moving forward, the sanctuary focus for 2023 is the construction of the educational and veterinary intake facility.
Since 2014, when they were given 34 acres by the state of CT, they have focused on securing permits and approvals, restoring and establishing native habitat, constructing an expansive retaining wall and associated drainage, and installing the permanent access drive. The wall was gifted
by Gino Vona, a talented stonemason who created a beautiful sunburst representing the connection between heaven and earth. The physical construction of the buildings is the final piece.
“The timing could not be more perfect,” says Hubbard. “In tandem with preparing for the build, we launched programming–offered under tents, in borrowed space, in schools–and have worked to find and keep companion animals in homes. Future growth of the sanctuary is dependent on a permanent space: allowing us to welcome school trips and expand educational offerings, provide shelter to farm animals, and serve as a model for environmental responsibility.”
There are many naming opportunities in the building to donate to and play a part in creating this safe haven for all, inspired by Catherine, whose spirit absolutely lives on in the sanctuary. Reach out at www.cvhfoundation.org for more information.

As August marks our kids and pets issue, Greenwich Lifestyle is honoring the work that St. Jude does for children and families worldwide.
Committee-co chairs of the St. Jude Give to Live Gala, Marilena Greig and Tina McCann have done amazing work through the years to help the children and families of St. Jude.
The Give to Live Gala has raised approximately $1 million for the St. Jude mission. The St. Jude Give To Live Society is a loyal group of donors who consistently give charitable gifts throughout the year making a huge impact. As a committed donor, giving helps ensure St. Jude’s lifesaving mission to find cures and provide world-class care for some of the world’s sickest children.
Marilena Greig and Tina McCann are giving us a glimpse into the work they do and how important it is for the future.
GL: WHAT IS THE MISSION OF ST. JUDE?
The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.
GL: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ST. JUDE GIVE TO LIVE GALA AND ITS ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY AND THE LIVES OF CHILDREN. We are so fortunate to have wonderful treatment hospitals in our area, but we want to bring awareness to the research taking place at St. Jude that is moving the needle on survival rates across the globe. We want people in our community to know that this world-renowned research being conducted at St. Jude is freely shared and can be a resource to kids being treated anywhere. We are so grateful that every year, the Give to Live Gala surpasses our fundraising goals. We feel we are just scratching the surface of what we will achieve in the coming years.
GL: WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY AT WORK LOOK LIKE?
Although we both have full time jobs that we have held for many decades, our devotion to St. Jude and our gala are an integral part of our daily work life. We meet throughout the year on a consistent basis to share ideas and implement strategies to help the mission of St Jude.
“No child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.”
GL: WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?
The most rewarding part of our roles is giving back to such a wonderful organization that impacts children and families throughout the world.
GL: HOW CAN PEOPLE HELP GIVE BACK TO ST. JUDE?
From an individual level, you can make a donation to stjude.org/donate OR come out in person to an amazing event (like the Give to Live Gala!) St. Jude also partners with companies large and small on everything from employee giving to major national partnerships.
At St. Jude, no family ever receives a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food. That’s what it is about for us – knowing that at their time of greatest need – these families do not have to worry about anything but their child. That’s why we work yearround to raise funds and spread the word about this wonderful organization.
“We are so grateful that every year, the Give to Live Gala surpasses our fundraising goals.”
EVERYONE HAS A STORY: FIND JOY IN STRENGTHENING
RELATIONSHIPS AND COMMUNICATING THROUGH MUSIC
Laura Joy Florio is not only the Founder of Life Lyrics Music Therapy, LLC, she is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, Board Certified Music Therapist and Greenwich native who found her passion for music at a very young age. Throughout her childhood, Laura played instruments, sang in choirs and had a strong affinity for helping others, which led her to discover that music therapy was the perfect career to continue doing what she has always loved. Laura recognized the power of music while working with young children and children with disabilities and decided the ultimate goal would be to open her own practice one day.
DESCRIBE LIFE LYRICS MUSIC THERAPY.
Life Lyrics is a private music therapy practice created to provide music therapy services to children and their families within the community. Life Lyrics uses music to bridge communication gaps within relationships and encourage deeper expression or sense of self, which in turn allows for furthered growth and communication. Within psychotherapy sessions, music interventions such as singing, instrument-playing, improvisation, music-listening and songwriting are available to each client, allowing them to create, process, build relationships and reach individualized goals. Life Lyrics serves children from birth to young adulthood individually and in group settings. Not only can music be stimulating and help with functional learning, but it also reaches emotional avenues for clients to process and grow.
I wanted to be a resource for my community, working privately one-onone with families while also contracting with local schools and organizations. After spending years in the Pediatric Department at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, particularly during the start of the pandemic, I recognized the need for increased mental health services and the power of music within psychotherapy. I began my vision of Life Lyrics Music Therapy at the end of 2021 while I was living in NYC. Once my husband and I moved back to my hometown of Greenwich, I transitioned my practice to this location where it is now building and growing within the area. My goal and mission continue to be about empowering children to find joy in making music with others.
Sessions consist of different music interventions intended to reach personalized goals. Clients or groups usually will begin building rapport with me, then expand upon strengths, learn new skills and find closure within the process as sessions or time concludes. As the therapist, I often lead with a melodic instrument, such as a piano, guitar or voice, when assisting a client through a therapeutic process or group. Other instruments are present for clients to play when they are encouraged and willing. Interventions include, but are not limited to: singing, lyric analysis, instrument-playing, improvisation, music-listening, songwriting and recording. Clients may benefit from the qualities of music that promote stimulation, relaxation, expression and interaction.
Ever since I can remember, I loved every part of studying music. I always had a passion for singing and took my studies very seriously. Music therapy was the perfect combination, reflecting
both of my interests: Psychology and Music. After graduating from Molloy University where I received a Bachelors in Science in Music Therapy, I obtained my Music Therapy-Board Certification (MT-BC) and continued my studies at NYU to attain a Master of Arts in Music Therapy.
While working in the hospital during this time, I gravitated towards working within pediatrics with children who were acutely and chronically ill. It was evident how much music therapy assisted patients throughout their
“Music is my main modality within psychotherapy. It is through music that one’s emotions, language and strengths are evident.”
hospitalization, in providing avenues for expression, moments for emotion release, assistance during physically and emotionally difficult procedures, and opportunities for joy within a challenging environment. I also attained my Licensed Creative Arts Therapy (LCAT) certification, allowing me to practice Psychotherapy. With this, Life Lyrics provides music therapy services to young adults and adults, assisting with personal difficulties and life goals.
Lastly, I worked very closely with an interdisciplinary therapy team within the hospital setting. It was through this where I, more deeply and first-hand, experienced the incredible work of other therapists and
psychosocial providers. It was helpful to collaborate on goals for patients, while individually contributing to a treatment plan through our specific skills and specialties. Working together, with similar intentions of the well-being of our patients, enabled a more powerful treatment and growth process.
Children learn within their environment and by the resources they are provided. Life Lyrics aspires to be a continued resource available for families to conveniently serve their children. I hope for the community to see the value of music therapy as Creative Arts Therapy.
• Music Therapy has the power to meet non-musical individualized goals that may be transferred outside of a musical setting: whether that be social, emotional, cognitive, behavioral or physical.

Who says sustainability has to be boring? Typical sustainable shopping options touted by fashion experts include buying from consignment shops, renting, and repairing old clothes. These are all great options. But you’re allowed to get creative with your sustainability efforts. And when it comes to doing so for your kids, your back-to-school shopping bonanza can turn out to be smart and fun.
As a stylist and mom of a 7-year-old and 2-yearold, I can attest to the convenience that Amazon offers. While searching for “boys skinny jeans” and “toddler dresses” is undoubtedly easier than hopping in the car and rummaging through racks of kids clothing, giving into the temptation of clicking a button and waiting for a package almost always disappoints — either in quality of garments or that crummy feeling of guilt for contributing to the fast fashion industry.
In order to prevent that, “It’s one week before school already?!” feeling of panic, here are my recommendations for sustainable back to school shopping for your kids.
Local thrift stores are secret gold mines for new-to-you treasures. This includes resale shops, vintage stores and any place that sells second-hand clothing and accessories. You can feel extra good about supporting a small business that relies on the contributions of local residents.
A few months ago, I attended a clothing swap with a few friends. We gathered a handful of items from our own closets that we no longer used, brought them to the clothing swap event and had a really fun evening "swapping" clothes. It was the clearest “One man’s trash is another’s treasure” testament I had ever experienced. Hold your own clothing swap with friends or neighbors.
All of those “Tag Sale” signs you see on street corners in the summer months? Stop by a few and see what’s there. A lot of them are ridding furniture and houseware items, but some are selling vintage goods like durable jackets, well-made shirts and leather shoes. Check them out!
Sustainability translates to quality and durability. When buying new, be mindful of the fabric, quality and style of the garment. A denim jacket, for example, is an excellent piece to invest in, no matter what age your child is. Being mindful includes making sure your kids can rewear new items multiple ways, which isn't hard to do with a cotton tee and good pair of jeans.
“IT WAS THE CLEAREST “ONE MAN’S TRASH IS ANOTHER’S TREASURE” TESTAMENT I HAD EVER EXPERIENCED.”

We have emerged from the winter of COVID. Spring thawed our spirits and now summer is here, and we want to live out loud! Children who were busy with summer camps are home for the most part and families are looking to have fun and relax. Some of us will take vacations, others will do road trips and still others will just want to chill and hang out.
It is not just the children looking forward to summer, parents get to take time off from work and enjoy the weather and be with family. Even those who work from home are looking forward to doing nothing! For every family, summer means taking it slow and that is very important to our rest and recovery.
It seems the most natural thing in the world to say, “I am on vacation and I want to do nothing.” However, as every parent knows, even doing nothing needs planning otherwise you will have bored little kids clamoring for something to do, or teenagers who want to disappear with their devices and friends. What a wasted family opportunity it would be if we did absolutely nothing!
There are so many activities to choose from, beaches and parks, games and movies, day trips and evenings out, that there can almost be a paralysis of choice. What about food? There is a bounty of fruits and vegetables, which opens a vista of great salads and meals for the family to enjoy. We are ready to have fun, but it can feel like hard work, especially if it is just, you as mom or dad carrying the load.
You would like to savor each day before September arrives, and school is back, and things get hectic again.
So, this year, try to delegate and “do nothing”. Ask each family member to give three suggestions of what they want to do.
I am sure your family will find something interesting from the choices each family member suggests.
Let each person be responsible for a week. Let them pick an activity, a day trip, a physical activity, and a family project. For the family project, think of getting help with something that you need to get done this summer.
Once you have a list of activities generated by your family, which is broadly acceptable, the fun can begin. Put the activities in your calendar of events. Let each person own their activity and day trip.
They can plan what they want to see, what time they should wake up and what time the family should leave. Let them plan their breakfast and the picnic if you plan to carry food. You can limit the options to sandwiches, fruit, and water.
Let them decide what food, tablecloth, silverware, paper plates, they want to carry, down to the last detail. Teenagers and children will love planning and you will be happy to make it happen rather than putting out suggestions that are ignored, or losing your cool because you are doing everything.
Plan a day trip to the city, a museum or go for a hike.
Let them find out if you need tickets and you can buy it for them. Again, let them plan the outing and whether you pack any food. Keep the meal simple and make it healthy. Keep the snacks minimal. You can throw in a surprise, like a small scoop of their favorite ice cream after they have been walking.
ARTICLE BY MADHU MATHURAdditionally, a family project each summer is a great way to keep children busy and feel a sense of family accomplishment. I think working with photos and albums is fun. You could make a family photo wall. Let the children pick their project, you can always offer suggestions. It will get them interested and away from their devices. Plan something that maybe one day they can look back on fondly, something they created this summer.
