Suburb Love
APRIL 2016
o here’s the thing. I actually really like the suburbs. The cool kids may live in Highlands or RiNo or whatever the trendy abbreviation is this month, but I’ll take my slower-paced, kid-filled, more-grass-than-asphalt neighborhood any day. And it’s not just about having a bigger house or better schools or a safer place to live; suburbia can provide the kind of community that cities aspire to, but quieter. I like that quiet, that stillness.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve spent a good chunk of my life in Denver and Boulder, and I love both to no end. Not a week goes by when I don’t visit one or both (let’s be honest – they’ve got us beat for food and culture), but, at the end of the day, I want to return home to a house I can afford, a yard big enough for my three dogs to run around in, and – OK this one is pretty superficial – a saved-just-for-me, covered parking space in my garage. I’m sure we’re all familiar with suburbia’s criticisms: It’s fake. Generic. Devoid of identity. Cookie cutter. It certainly can be, but, like anything else, it’s what you make of it. Suburbia is also handstand contests at neighborhood pools. Trampolines the size of city studios. A nonstop stream of little Elsas on Halloween. My neighbor’s car at the ready the next time mine won’t start. I hope that Highlands Ranch Lifestyle reflects that version of the suburbs. Celebrating the people who choose to follow their dreams; who also just so happen to choose to live in a place where their kids can ride bikes in the cul-de-sac and go sledding in the greenbelt. Where we uncover local restaurants that may not have much of an advertising budget, but are delicious spots at which to savor an evening. And to spotlight the bars, breweries and cafes where you can sip away a lazy morning or chatty evening. This month we focus on talented women working in a variety of fields – from academia to altruism to animals. If you’re looking for a jolt of inspiration, read their stories. There’s also a pretty major artist living in our midst, and we explore her story and work in a revealing Q&A. And don’t miss the delicious feature on the local French bakery, Pierre Michel. If those pictures don’t make you scrap your low-carb diet, I don’t know what will.

Whether you win, place, or show, the Kentucky Derby isn’t all about the horses. Let’s be honest, Derby Day is an excuse to embrace our inner Southern belle, don a stunning sun hat, and drink mint juleps until the cows (or horses) come home. There are no hard and fast rules for Derby Day dressing, so whether you go for a classic, feminine sundress or opt for a modern, casual look, we’ll make sure it’s you and your outfit that are the ones going home with a garland of roses.
Karmen Berentsen Owner of A Line Boutique
the SUNDRESS
A classic never dies - the sundress is a flirty welcome to warm summer days and backyard parties. Opt for a mature silhouette and length with preppy details like a button front and structured collar. An added belt accentuates the small of your waist while a wedge shoe adds height and prevents you from aerating the lawn…
a JUMPSUIT
A one piece wonder that we all forget about! Don’t be intimidated - the jumpsuit is an ultra chic yet effortless option for any elevated look. Whether a weightless chiffon romper or tailored pantsuit, there’s something for everyone in this category.
SHORTS & a TEE
If you’re a casual dresser, don’t feel like you need to abandon your go-to uniform. Simply opt for a more tailored bottom with finer fabrication and a well-tailored fit. Throw on a T-shirt with elevated detailing like lace finishes or eyelet punctuation. Add some accessories, an embellished flat and your work is done.

ROAD PROJECT EXPANDS TO BENEFIT MOTORISTS Castle Rock Parkway, to the right of the overpass, will be expanded to be a four-lane road prior to the completion of the North Meadows Extension project. The left side of the overpass will be known as North Meadows Drive, and to stay ahead of projected traffic increases in Castle Rock and Douglas County, the section of road (Castle Rock Parkway) being built between U.S. 85 and I-25 — initially planned to be one lane in each direction — will be widened to four lanes total. As new businesses and residents continue to move to Castle Rock and into the County, the Castle Rock Town Council and Board of Douglas County Commissioners unanimously agreed to fund the expansion —

CASTLE PINES CAFÉ HAS A MISSION Wellspring Community began in 2008 with four young women with developmental disabilities learning how to bake cookies in a private kitchen. Soon, their cookies were selling at local churches and Wellspring's first business enterprise, Best Buddies Bakery, was underway. The biggest customers for Best Buddies Bakery are Tony's Market, Castle Rock Adventist Hospital and Regis Jesuit High School. And although the wholesale business was booming, bakery participants had bigger dreams. “We wanted people to be able to see what we make,” Marti Jones, director of business development, said. “But we also wanted people to be served by our participants — have our participants act as hosts and waitresses and busers.” That's when the Bomans came into the picture. Greg and Becky Boman offered a wall in The Emporium — a cluster of shops specializing in home decor, food, jewelry, clothing and antiques — for Wellspring to sell ceramics and woodworking that participants made. And some, whose properties also border residential streets, dislike having a fence with two materials as a result of Trex being too expensive to buy on their own. In January, the district started replacing 11,315 feet of fencing along South Broadway. The project will be completed in 2016. This year’s cost is equal to $866,500. HighlandsRanchHerald.net

LACEY SPRUCE Red Rocks is one of my favorite places to work out. Not only are the stairs killer, but you've got a gorgeous view to look at while you sweat it out! This 20-minute circuit is great when you combine with running up the stairs at Red Rocks for the perfect combination of strength training and cardio. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE OUTFIT:
Mika Yoga Wear has quickly become one of my go-to's for cute workout wear. Their fabrics are so comfortable, flattering, and come in so many bright colors and prints. Designed for movement, they never lose their shape, and are functional for everything from running to yoga to circuit training and beyond. Zella, Nordstrom's in-house activewear brand, is another one of my favorites. They always offer trendier styles and the live-in leggings are so comfortable that you truly do want to live in them! Mixing in fun prints with basics is a great way to look forward to working out because, let's face it: having good workout gear will make you want to show it off! MYBORINGCLOSET.COM

atte art isn’t a term found in art books or history papers, but the science is easy: Combine crema, which is the emulsion of coffee oil and brewed coffee, and the microfoam, which is the air in milk, to create two liquids that don’t mix. Add one creative barista and you’ll find art. The idea behind pretty, simple shapes in your coffee’s foam began with a collaboration between two men in the coffee capitals of the world: Seattle and Italy, of course. But you can experience the same idea from local coffee shops right in your neighborhood. We’ve rounded up the best locally owned coffee shops in the south Denver area for your choice of espresso and coffee drinks.

here are many things one expects from Highlands
Ranch: easy access to the outdoors, good schools, comfortable neighborhoods, an abundance of people living healthy, outdoor lifestyles. In comparison to downtown Denver, though, business diversity might not be the first thing to come to mind. Yet in seeking out women entrepreneurs of Highlands Ranch, we came across women working in all industries. We met with several local powerhouse women and were able to learn a little about what inspired them to begin their businesses, what they love most about their work, and what keeps them fighting when things get tough. Whether you’re thinking about starting your own business or looking for inspiration to continue in your current career, these women’s stories may be the boost you're seeking. 24

“There is no greater purpose for a school than equipping students to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in our world.” REBECCA THOMAS | VALOR CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL
Rebecca Thomas serves as Academic Dean at Valor Christian High School, an elite Christian high school founded in 2007. Thomas began her teaching career at Orange Lutheran High School in California, where she taught a variety of math classes. In 2007, she was chosen for the Outstanding Christian
Educator Award. With that recognition, she had the opportu-
nity to move to Denver and be a part of Valor Christian High School’s opening year. The school began with a very small student body, but the population has quickly grown, a process that Thomas has found extremely rewarding. At the end of
her first year at Valor, Thomas was awarded Valor’s Excellence in Teaching award. Her career subsequently transformed from
full-time math teacher to Math Department Chair, and finally to Academic Dean. “There is no greater purpose for a school than equipping students to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in our world,” Thomas says. She hopes to continue to help Valor students succeed academically, athletically, creatively, and most importantly, spiritually, for a long time to come.
“Find something you have passion about and truly believe in.” WENDY TONG | WENDY'S TEAM
Wendy Tong, an internal medicine physician, U.S. Air Force veteran and Georgetown University graduate, recently started her own company to provide household care for elderly people. The company goes by the name Wendy’s Team and is just that: a team of people personally trained by Tong, dedicated to providing senior citizens with quality care services including running errands, transportation, companionship, housework, and quick check-ins. When Tong began doing home visits as a medical student, she realized how much the pressure of taking care of a loved one can affect a caretaker’s life. A desire to provide some relief to caretakers was a large part of Tong’s motivation in creating Wendy’s Team. Tong’s experience as a U.S. Veteran also helped to inspire the company. After seeing many veterans who had been led to believe they would receive more medical benefits than were actually available, Tong wanted to create a company to improve this situation. As for advice to others who are inspired to create change, Tong says, “Find something you have passion about and truly believe in. Solve a problem that’s real.”

“Look for inspiration and be prepared to act on it.” DANNA TULLIS | THE CREATIVE EDGE & COLORADO EVENT DESIGN
Danna Tullis has been working as a creative professional in a multitude of ways throughout her career. Today she manages The Creative Edge, a program that offers art classes to people of all ages and operates on the premise that “drawing and painting are personal skills that can be learned.” About a year ago, Tullis expanded The Creative Edge to include two additional branches: The Creative’s Best Friend and Creative’s Profit Studio. Through both of these branches, Tullis conducts workshops around Denver to provide practical advice and inspiration to those looking to turn their passions into profit. Last but not least, Tullis owns Colorado Event Design with her husband and is in her eighth year of producing fine art and music festivals all around Colorado. Her advice on starting a new business? “Focus on what you want to do, look for inspiration and be prepared to act on it.” Obviously a motto Tullis has successfully lived out.
MAUREEN AND DEVIN LAKE | TRENDY PET
Maureen and Devin Lake are a mother/daughter duo who co-own Trendy Pet, a company that designs and sells sleek, modern raised feeding bowls ideal for aging pets, pets with injuries, and large breeds. Maureen and Devin share a passion for pet health and greatly enjoy working together as business partners. Devin, a former veterinary technician, operates as the CFO of the company while Maureen, a retired special education teacher, manages their social media platforms, blog (Rosa Doodle), and marketing. The duo’s joint passion for animals runs deep. A lifelong dogowner and lover, Devin knew as a little girl that she wanted to work with animals. As an adult, she worked as a certified veterinarian for years but eventually felt that pursuing another avenue of animal health would be a better fit. Maureen also had fallen in love with animals at a young age and was ready for a career change around the same time Devin was looking for an alternative to her vet practice. When asked who has been an essential part of their support system in becoming business owners, they both separately answered that the other one was their most important supporter.

After meeting Tom and having two children together, Denise and Tom moved back to Colorado. Once her children were both school aged, Barnwell decided to join her husband in the real estate business. Barnwell uses her interior design experience to prepare for photo shoots with attractive furnishings and artwork, as well as to create successful ads and print marketing. Barnwell considers the most important part of her job to be taking the time to listen to her clients so she can get to the heart of what they are looking for. “Residential real estate is a very emotional business, and it takes good communication to keep clients happy. Listening to each client's goals and figuring out how each individual prefers to communicate is so helpful in keeping transactions moving smoothly.” She intends to continue helping people find the home they are looking for for the remainder of her career.
KARMEN BERENTSEN | A LINE BOUTIQUE
Entrepreneur Karmen Berentsen sold her first company in the tech industry in 2007. An avid fashion collector, one of her prized possessions is a bracelet owned by Audrey Hepburn. When Karmen heard A Line Boutique was closing its doors in 2012, she leapt at the opportunity to transform her passion into a career. A Line has experienced a sustained growth of over 600% in the past three years. Karmen credits her unique hyper-customer focused experiential business model. She says her family is her biggest support system and her best inspiration. “There is nothing more grounding than modeling for my daughter how to be ambitious, yet balanced,” says Karmen. Her words of wisdom: “Create experiences, not merely manufacture or sell a good product or service, but truly enhance lives. Learn to say ‘no’ to the good - to do the great. It’s easy to do the urgent and hard to do the important.”

PIERRE MICHEL BAKERY DELIGHTS WITH FRENCH CUISINE

a product of the Pierre Michel Bakery in Highlands Ranch and you won’t be able to wait a second longer before digging in. Steeped in the tradition of high quality, handmade French cuisine, Pierre Michel Bakery is a warm, inviting treasure that offers delicious, authentic cuisine and a warm sense of welcome and community through its doors. Pierre Michel Bakery was founded by husband and wife team Eric and Isabelle Vivier, who moved from Lyon, France with their family in 2008. Following a trip to Colorado the family unanimously voted that this was the place they wanted to settle and, after arriving in July 2008, the Viviers almost immediately began working on remodeling a space for their bakery concept.

With the goal of cooking uniquely French and organic breakfast and lunch dishes from scratch every day, Pierre Michel (named after Eric and Isabelle’s fathers, respectively) is a bakery meant to inspire health and the enjoyment of homemade French dishes. For Isabelle, the roots of Pierre Michel Bakery can be traced back to the mid-twentieth century. “We are baking and cooking as if it was the 1950s after the second world war in Europe,” says Isabelle. After the war, the women and wives of Lyon, Isabelle’s hometown, often organized large buffet-style meals to feed their husbands who were working to rebuild the country. Some of these women eventually created their own café in Lyon and became Isabelle’s inspiration not just for their incredible baking and cooking skills, but also for their entrepreneurial business savvy. It’s this “homestyle cooking on a bigger scale” that Isabelle hopes to continue fostering and see thrive at Pierre Michel Bakery. This philosophy of supporting the local community is also a priority for the couple. In the midst of the recession from 2008 through 2010, the bakery continued to be a welcoming place where locals could take comfort in something as simple as a warm croissant. The community in turn supported Pierre Michel, helping the bakery grow by word of mouth and gain a reputation as a unique and special breakfast and lunch destination. Pierre Michel Bakery moved to their new location in Highlands Ranch in December 2013. Today, the bakery sells mouthwatering breakfast dishes such as Brouillade, a French-style egg scramble, quiche, pastries, sandwiches, and more. Whether you’d prefer to dine at the bakery or pick up soup or a sandwich to go, Pierre Michel’s products continue to rise above the competition in their authenticity and enormously savory qualities. In the future, Isabelle hopes to see a continued emphasis on the bakery’s to-go and lunch items. The bakery is also developing a brunch menu and expanding their weekend hours to continue serving and enriching their local customers. Stop by this true fam-

and 80 degrees F, so here in Colorado, keep them indoors.
Care, water: Air plants love humidity, which means they do need watering. Filtered water is best, as chemicals in tap water can stress them out. I recommend that clients spritz them three times a week, or soak them upside down in water for two hours once a week. Bathrooms are a great location for air plants, as they will get a humid environment from the shower steam.
Care food: They can be spritzed with an indoor plant food once a month. I recommend following the instructions on the packaging.
DIY components: Air plants require no soil and can be arranged in a variety of mediums, such as shells, sand, driftwood, ferns or stones.

ou could say that Castle Rock-based artist Jennifer M. Godshalk is kind of like the marvel next door. You don’t really expect someone so nice and unassuming – and with such an
inspiring story to boot – to be so successful in the art world. But there she is down south, using her home as her studio where she creates contemporary fine art paintings that are sold and shown throughout the region and beyond. We spoke with Godshalk about her inspiration, personal tragedy and that time Quentin Tarantino blew into town and fell in love with her painting. 38

ARTICLE ALLYSON REEDY | PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL RAINERO HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO PAINTING?
I always sketched and drew horses as a child. I was obsessed with them. But then I set my creativity aside in high school, then I went to a tech school, then I got married and became a mom. I put everyone first but myself. I reached out to a family member I hadn't spoken to in years who asked me if I had ever gotten my horse. I was so sad to realize I never did. So within the year, my family started taking riding lessons and I purchased a horse from the stable. My daughter showed our horse in 4-H and she decided to try an art project. I was helping her study different genres of artwork when I had the sudden urge to try a painting
