ARE YOU HUNGRY, LAGUNA NIGUEL? We’re sure you will be when you devourthis issue. We’ve highlighted some of the most delicious bites our area has to offer, and more. While we don’t like to play favorites, the topic of food is near and dear to our hearts. After all, food is not only nourishing (and delicious) but it also brings people together— whether it’s a special anniversary dinner, a much-needed lunch break with coworkers, a friend’s birthday party or even a casual weeknight meal with family. Food is often considered one of life’s great pleasures. But what’s food without a community of friends with whom to share it? As evidenced by the recent 30th Anniversary Carnival, Laguna Niguel is a truly amazing place to be. Some photos from that historic event are included. Also, in this issue, we celebrate one of the area’s historic cultural icons, Hobie Alter, and his indelible contribution to what has become today’s burgeoning surfing and beach lifestyle.

Finally, with the 2019/2020 school year underway, we’ve decided to shine a light on Laguna Niguel’s own St. Anne School. Since 1992, St. Anne’s has been doing some tremendous work—helping students discover what kind of great they want to be! But, back to the food—We promise we won’t steer you wrong. SUNDAY DINNERS ARE A SACRED TRADITION IN MANY A FAMILY. Whether incorporating a plethora of relatives or enjoying the intimacy of one-on-one, they are an opportunity to connect and a time to reflect. Plus, they can be awfully delicious. For Marc Cohen, this ritual created both fond memories of his Grandma joyously cooking on Sunday and inspired what would become his profession. This revelation has ultimately bestowed unto him the distinct honor of delighting local palates with his three unique restaurants: Laguna Beach’s 230 Forest and Watermarc, as well as Opah Seafood Grill in Aliso Viejo. While in culinary school at Johnson and Wales University, this driven Baltimore native further honed his skills by working at commercial venues locally. Not just one restaurant—that would be too simple—but the type of facility that featured three meals a day in each of their fine dining, casual dining and banquet spots. Ultimately, this boot camp, if you will, served him well as he went on to participate as a member of the famed Chaîne des Rôtisseurs U.S. Culinary Olympic team that competed and won several gold medals in Frankfurt, Germany. The award-winning Wonderkid Chef continued his East Coast reign gaining Top Chef honors and the attention of West Coast investors—and so was born 230 Forest Ave. in 1995. Originally conceived as a bistro/market aimed at Laguna’s beachgoers, Chef Cohen’s innovative menu and crafty cocktails brought in elite foodies and earned him the National Silver Plate Award from IFMA in Chicago, as the top independent operator in the country. The 230 was thriving! Time to embrace another

time or energy to head out to Laguna Beach but were in desperate need of a dining sole proprietorship. Chef Cohen took the basic sophistication of 230’s menu to a larger, more casual environment and established Opah Seafood Grill, a gastronomic oasis amidst a desert of corporate fare. The town literally ate it up as the place became the preeminent destination for date nights, happy hours and family dinners. About 10 years ago, the epicurean maverick embarked on yet another new endeavor as a twolevel space opened up in Laguna Beach’s Peppertree Lane. Chef Cohen could envision the layout of the downstairs bar/fine dining restaurant and romantic, second-floor terrace. The menu would feature “great food paired with great beverage.” Watermarc is rich in choices beginning with more than 25 grazing plates—not tapas, as these are actual finished plates. This segues into more contemporary and traditional menu components including, from May through the beginning of July, a glimpse into his Maryland roots as he flies in Chesapeake Bay softshell crabs. With his trifecta complete, Cohen, the executive chef and operating partner, stays true to his north star. The restaurants’ menus may differ, but his commitment to fresh, nonprocessed ingredients in dishes made-to-order unwaveringly prevails. The love of cooking and sharing a meal with family and friends is, to this day, a big part of what keeps him motivated as he tirelessly oversees the three establishments six days a week—except on Sundays. Though the restaurants are open, Sundays are family days during which he enjoys the outdoor OC lifestyle with his wife, Michelle, and their three grown children.

Laguna Niguel Lifestyle | October 2019
Established in 1992,
ST. ANNE SCHOOL IS AN INDEPENDENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN LAGUNA NIGUEL THAT EDUCATES STUDENTS FROM PRESCHOOL THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE, ENCOURAGING THEM TO EXPAND THEIR WORLD AND DISCOVER THEIR PASSIONS. Walk through the halls of St. Anne School, and you’ll see students holding doors open for guests, collaborating on projects and high-fiving teachers and administrators. Opportunities for students to grow in faith include youth ministry for fourth-fifth grades, Christian community service for middle school, religious retreats for students and staff, and the new addition of an accelerated religion class for eighth-graders to explore their faith on a deeper level and pursue leadership opportunities to spread the light of Christ throughout the community. An Education that Inspires Students to Discover the Kind of Great They Want to Be St. Anne School partners with parents to ensure every child achieves an education that supports their needs, talents and interests while forming their character and spiritual development. The dedicated teachers inspire students to develop independence, discover a love of learning and push themselves to unlock their potential. Rigorous core academics are enriched by a variety of elective classes and after-school programs, such as Future Problem Solvers, FIRST Lego League, Garage Rock Band, Food and Fitness, Navigating Our World, and more. Expanding Learning Support ACCESS Program This summer, St. Anne School established an enhanced, multi-tiered support program for grades K-eighth called ACCESS (Academic and Counseling Center for Educational Support and Success). Under the direction and leadership of Mrs. Kristin Sylvester, St. Anne’s school psychologist, ACCESS provides more availability to learning support through trained faculty and an intervention specialist. St. Anne has increased its ACCESS staffing and is now providing a learning support teacher per grade level (2-5), as well as two in Middle School. Challenging Students Through Honors Courses Starting in Fifth Grade To further challenge and excite students, St. Anne offers advanced and honors courses to students who have demonstrated abilities beginning in fifth grade with honors math. Middle school students are offered a full honors program. This coming year, St. Anne will be offering additional honors courses in Middle School and piloting a new science program in fourth-eighth grades, which will provide enriching hands-on lessons. Reimagined Outdoor Play Areas Recognizing that play and exploration not only benefits a child’s health but improves classroom performance, increases cognitive development and hones social skills, St. Anne School made it a fundraising priority to enhance 20

their outdoor spaces for students. Last year, St. Anne proudly installed an innovative, state-of-the-art playground for students in lower and middle school, and the students have been eagerly awaiting playtime ever since. The preschool, outside classroom and play area was also overhauled with the addition of a dedicated area for 2-year-old students, collaborative play equipment such as cascading water tables, and an amphitheater for students to perform, imagine and explore.

LAGUNA BEACH TREASURE OFFERS AN AUTHENTIC AND INTENSELY LOCAL TAKE ON CALIFORNIA COMFORT FOOD
'Man-wiches' at The Ranch ARTICLE MIKE GERARD
PHOTOGRAPHY KAREN REUTER
LAGUNA BEACH IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS MAJESTIC BEAUTY—WITH CANYONS, COVES, SEASIDE BLUFFS AND ITS PICTURESQUE COASTLINE. The city also boasts more than 20,000 acres of protected wilderness, further enhancing the community’s artistic sentiment. The nooks and crannies of such a setting are sure to contain an abundance of hidden treasures. Among the most incredible of these treasures is The Ranch at Laguna Beach. The Ranch is a boutique coastal ranch hotel, spa, and golf resort that is the perfect blend of all Laguna Beach has to offer. It is nestled in the majestic Aliso and Wood Canyons—situated on an iconic piece of land where the canyons meet the sea. With a long and celebrated history, The Ranch at Laguna Beach has been re-envisioned as one of Southern California’s newest hotel and spas. In addition, it was handpicked as California’s only National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World for its exceptional guest experience and commitment to sustainable practices. The Ranch was also voted among the Top 10 Resort Hotels in California by Travel and Leisure. 22
Laguna Niguel Lifestyle | October 2019
Harvest Restaurant at The Ranch, one of Orange County’s newest culinary experiences, is already a locals’ favorite. Fresh-made food and drink are a focus throughout the experience, with many ingredients harvested on the property. What Harvest doesn’t grow onsite is thoughtfully sourced. In addition to its diverse menu, Harvest offers an enticing wine list and 18 craft beers on tap. For this month’s Hot Spot Feature, we decided to give it a try and taste-test the best “man-wiches” and craft brews Harvest has to offer. Four of us headed out to Harvest for a lunchtime experience that we will never forget. From the first impression, turning off PCH, there is a feeling you are entering a special space. The tree-lined road winds its way toward the back of the property as glorious canyon and golf course views open up to an arena of serene beauty. The restaurant, bar and private dining room celebrate California’s storied history of organic farming, brewing, and oenology. Outdoor patio seating unveils stunning Aliso Canyon and golf course views. Since there were four of us dining together, we decided to try four different sandwiches and cut each one of them into four pieces for sampling. We then paired each with a craft brew for our taste test. We chose the Harvest Club Sandwich, Grilled Swordfish Sandwich, Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the Harvest Burger. And we were not disappointed. The sandwiches were generous in size, extremely flavorful and impeccably presented. They delivered a truly satisfying meal for any “man-wich” connoisseur! The beers were paired by our expert servers: House Beer Lager with the club, Eel River Organic Blond Ale with the swordfish, El Sully Mexican Lager with the fried chicken, and Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale with the burger. Our experience at The Ranch and Harvest Restaurant was a memorable one. We all agreed we’d return as frequent customers, and we’re certain that you will also.

HOBIE SURFBOARDS HOW HOBIE ALTER AND DICK METZ PIONEERED THE GLOBAL SURF CULTURE AND LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY HOBIE SURFBOARDS AND KAREN REUTER

OF THE SURFING AND THE ACTION SPORTS LIFESTYLE. Combining his love of woodworking with a spiritual connection to the sea, Hobie began shaping surfboards from balsa
wood in his father’s garage. Needless to say, the family car quickly lost its home—and what started as craft he shared with friends eventually shaped an entire culture. Hobie’s genius was in his persistence. He had an insatiable desire to invent, experiment and follow through. But for Hobie, it was a labor of love. “I started out making maybe 20 boards a summer for friends, and it sure beat being a lifeguard,” he recalled for the Santa Ana Register in September 1981. By 1954, and 40 tons of sawdust later, Hobie’s father bought him a vacant lot for $1,500. There, he built his own surf shop. Located on Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point, Hobie’s was the very first surf shop in Southern California. Now a restaurant called “Taco Surf,” the original structure still stands, just two blocks south from the current Hobie Surf Shop that is located on the corner of PCH and Golden Lantern. “My Laguna run totaled 99 boards. Number 100 came with the purchase of the Dana Point shop,” said Hobie in a later interview for Impressed with polyurethane’s weight to strength

The revolution that Hobie Surfboards created forever changed the manufacturing of surfboards and gave birth to the ocean sports lifestyle as we know it today. The new boards were lighter, faster and easier to ride than anything else in the water. Suddenly, everyone wanted to be a surfer, and every surfer wanted a Hobie Surfboard.
