JCR WELCOMES THE MASTROLEO’S TO SMITH LAKE.
Why Smith Lake: Being from Nashville, we wanted to find a place where we could get off the grid and enjoy family and friends. As fate would have it, we had several friends already on Smith Lake, and continue to find new friends. Everyone’s rationale for choosing Smith Lake was similar to ours…the water is so clean. Unlike the lakes around us, Smith Lakes has truly clean water and the homes around the lake are J O S E P H C A R T E R R E A LT Y . C O M 205-717-5253
beautiful. You could spend a lifetime exploring the lake and still find new, interesting, neat places and spaces. The favorable property and sales tax rate is further plus when coupled with the low income tax rate we enjoy in Tennessee. I am just saying…. Jeff Mastroleo

OCTOBER IS MY FAVORITE MONTH OF THE YEAR—AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HALLOWEEN (THOUGH I DO ENJOY A GOOD REESE'S CUP FROM MY KID'S BAG OF LOOT!) The truth is, October just hits all my senses perfectly. The changing leaves are beautiful to look at as I drive through the streets; the air is sweet, cool and crisp; and Franklin has so many activities and festivals in the fall to enjoy. The sights and sounds of all of fall are just one of the many things that make our city so joyful to live in. October also represents warm food and the perfect setting for any picnic, barbecue or evening on the back patio at a restaurant with friends. Narrowing down all the sensational local flavors in town was no easy task, but we are confident this issue is an accurate representation of our emerging reputation as a true dining destination. Or, if you prefer a night at home, you can whip up one of the many recipes we've included throughout this issue. Be sure to tag us in a photo of your final product on our Franklin Lifestyle Instagram or Facebook pages!

THE
TINY TOWN OF NOLENSVILLE HAS EXPERIENCED NEARLY EXPLOSIVE GROWTH IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS. Retail construction, new homes, new schools and great new restaurants have emerged and jazzed up the landscape. One such restaurant is Pork Belly Farmhouse. PBF opened on Nolensville Road in what used to be the McCord Family Farm and
then eventually was intended to be an office building. “That was challenging,” says General Manager Kevin Crowley. “To go from shifting plans from an office to a restaurant. They are built very differently. When the owners saw the location and what was happening with the growth in Nolensville, it was a

no-brainer. There’s so much in Nashville right now, it just made sense to go to the outskirts.” The Pork Belly name may sound familiar. Owners Chris Chwirut and Kristian Morgan opened Pork Belly Cafe about four years ago in neighboring Lenox Village just down the road. “The Cafe is basically counter service. You order at the counter, sit down and they bring you your food,” Kevin says. “Pork Belly Farmhouse is more of an upscale sit-down dining experience.” And the menus are different as well. “Farmhouse offers a restaurant entree kind of feel whereas the Cafe is fast-casual soups and panini sandwiches.” And the Pork Belly name will continue its expansion as plans are well underway for The Pork Belly Tipsy Pig in Carothers Farms in— you guessed it—Nolensville. “It will be a taproom with a neighborhood watering hole kind of feel. It won’t be the same as the Farmhouse or the Cafe. It will be a separate concept altogether,” Kevin says. Tentative plans have it opening within the next six months. Learning to Thrive with
Avenida Cool Springs
Nikki Jo Boston Avenida Cool Springs Resident Enrichment Director At Avenida Cool Springs, we believe that providing our residents with a rich array of services and programs—along with a great place to call home—is the key to active, healthy, and engaged living. That is why we offer our Five to ThriveTM Resident Enrichment Program, which was developed utilizing findings from a 10-year study on aging. The study found that five key areas have been shown to have a direct impact on healthy aging: Life Activity, Material Security, Physical and Functional Fitness, Cognitive Efficacy, and Social Resources. Our Five to Thrive program addresses these five areas with daily classes, events, and social opportunities. As the Resident Enrichment Director at Avenida Cool Springs, I manage the community’s rich calendar of physically invigorating, mentally enriching, and socially stimulating activities and resources. My goal is to make sure each resident is able to engage in programs that support their passions and enhance their quality of life, while addressing our five key areas of healthy aging. Let’s explore one of those key areas in more detail: Material Security. Retirement is a long-awaited and well-deserved stage in life—a stage in which we step away from the daily demands of career and focus on our self-improvement and spending quality time with friends and family. However, for many seniors entering retirement, the idea of losing a regular paycheck can bring about anxiety and trepidation. Plus, after a lifetime of saving, we suddenly find ourselves pulling money from our nestegg on a regular basis. With careful planning and guidance from financial professionals, however, we can enter our golden years with a strong sense of Material Security—the peace of mind we feel when we know that we are properly managing our funds to ensure a long and plentiful retirement.

FIVE FLOORS OF FUN
Ole Red Invents the 'Swanky Tonk' ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
STROLLING DOWN BROADWAY IN NASHVILLE’S DOWNTOWN CAN TAKE YOU INTO ANY NUMBER OF HONKY-TONKS. But it’s those red lights that will draw you in to Ole Red on the corner of Broadway and Third. And what you’ll immediately notice is that this place isn’t your typical honkytonk; it’s “swanky tonk,” a decidedly upscale version of the honky-tonk. And if it’s the red lights that drew you in, it’s the ambiance, mouthwatering menu and enticing cocktails that will keep you there. “I’m obsessed with good burgers, and I’m obsessed with having a good burger, and I would argue that our burger is one of the best,” Chef Garrett Pittler says. “I’m really OCD about having a good burger. It’s so simple, and so many people screw it up.” Burgers aren’t the only things on the menu. Southern Tater Tot Poutine, Kiss My Country Ass Quesadilla and Redneck Nachos are just a few of the other offerings on the first floor. “I think we’ve done a good job of making a variety of menu items that stay focused and true to honkytonk and Nashville and Blake,” Garrett says. Asked if Blake had a favorite dish on the menu, Garrett joked, “He likes CheezIits, Sprite Zero and Smithworks Vodka.” 30

Venture upstairs to The Lookout, and the dining and cocktail menu changes. “This is where chef’s culinary background really comes in because we get to play a little more up here, and we’re not married to a certain concept,” says Cassie Wade, assistant general manager and cocktail guru. “Essentially, we have three different restaurants in one. A guest can come in a few nights in a row and have different experiences. You can be downstairs and have the experience. You can come up to the rooftop and have a totally different experience.” Rooftop cocktails include Bad Decisions, Darling, Unshaken and Frozen Encounter. “You have to have a frozen drink on a rooftop,” Cassie says. “We also have a prosecco on tap.” Prosecco on tap? Dunwoody, Georgia,
IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A CITY LOCATED NEAR ATLANTA. Located just 10 miles north of Georgia’s capital city, Dunwoody has its own identity. In fact, Dunwoody wasn’t recognized as a city until 2008, so last year they celebrated their 10-year anniversary and how much the city has grown. Award-winning restaurants, wine bars, art galleries, parks, local events, spas and shopping all dot the local landscape. A little bit metropolitan chic, a little bit small-town escape, Dunwoody is beyond what you’d typically expect of a city that’s only 11 years old! A hot food scene, wide-open spaces, culture
Novo Cucina
and couture are on the menu for a weekend away and a short four-hour drive from Franklin. If you arrive in town for lunch and find yourself in the mood for some traditional Mexican food, stop at Cinco
Mexican
Cantina.
The
Latin-infused
Mexican cuisine is delicious, served in a family-friendly setting that’s designed to put a contemporary twist on Mexico’s culture. Next, head over to Dunwoody Nature Center. Stretching across a sprawling 35 acres, Dunwoody Park offers year-round recreation. The nature center offers a preserve with hiking trails, a creek and a playground in the woods. See a real Native American teepee up close, take a stroll through the treehouse and settle down for some relaxation in the hammock garden. Dunwoody’s theme, EVERYTHING WILL BE OK, has an interesting story. At the opening of Spruill Gallery’s 2009 Emerging Artists exhibit, local artist Jason Kofke erected a simple yet powerful piece on the side of an old smokehouse on the grounds of the Spruill Gallery. The plain white panel read “EVERYTHING WILL BE OK” in handwritten black type at the corner of a busy intersection. The sign became an instant sensation and remained for months, compelling passersby to stop and contemplate the words. Periodically, the sign was replaced with other artistic work, but an outcry from the public called for the sign’s permanent return. Although the sign currently displayed on the Spruill Gallery grounds is a replica, its message has not faltered nor has the response. Although the mural is visible from the street, Dunwoody encourages visitors to stop by, see it up close and take pictures. CONTINUED >

Tip 1: Storage "I am a big fan of being organized! Lazy susans for spices and condiments are lifesavers for being able to see everything. I especially love them under the sink for cleaning products. Storage bins and baskets are a must for keeping everything organized and in plain sight. Label everything. My personal favorites are the washable chalk stickers."

Tip 2: Lighting "The most important aspect of your kitchen to finish it off! Make sure that you have multiple layers of lighting: task, ambient and accent lighting. Pay attention to the placement of each and the height in the overall plan. The scale of your lighting is important as well. This is one place that you can have fun and make a statement. Don't be afraid."

COOL SPRINGS AND COOL BARS ARTICLE ASHLEY HUTCHESON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The Rutledge 54
Franklin Lifestyle | October 2019
SPERRY’S While the original Sperry’s is located in Belle Meade, its second location in Franklin could, by some, be considered better. Located in the heart of Cool Springs, Sperry’s offers a high-class bar and restaurant that are exceedingly hard to come by these days. Some might be skeptical at first, but once the door closes behind you, the ambiance overwhelms your experience. You could be in a bar built decades ago or the bottom of an old inn tucked away for locals. Aside from the opulent, warm feeling of Sperry’s, their happy hour, Monday through Friday from 3–6 p.m. is one of the best in Nashville, let alone Franklin. From the jumbo shrimp cocktail, prime rib sliders, escargot and other $8 appetizers, to the half-off martini’s and half-priced bottles of wine on Sunday and Monday, you simply can’t go wrong! The bar is great for drinks with a coworker, a few friends or is romantic enough for a quick canoodle with your significant other. BRICK TOP’S With eight locations around the country and two right here in Middle Tennessee, Brick Top’s could feel like a chain, but that’s far from accurate. Once you saddle up to the cherry-wood accented open bar at its Cool Springs location, you’ll immediately reap the benefits of its attentive staff. Clad in cute caterer-like ensembles, the bar staff will treat you as if you are a repeat customer from the beginning. Large comfortable chairs allow you and your drinking buddy to chat and also people-watch with the bar and restaurant’s design. With a vibe combining beach, country club and steakhouse, Brick Top’s invites you to stay for hours. Cocktails are always poured with a generous hand and delivered with a sidecar, while beer on tap is dispensed into a chilled pilsner glass. An excellent spot for coworkers, friends and couples, Brick Top’s also lends itself well for an individual to grab a glass of wine and unwind. Don’t forget to order an appetizer—the deviled eggs and Millionaire’s Bacon and California grilled artichokes are delectable options. THE RUTLEDGE You’ve probably driven by the striking black-and-white building and were curious about what’s going on inside. From the owners of Jonathan’s comes a modern American grill and cocktail bar. The ambiance is sleek and luxurious all while being relaxed and easy. No more driving into Nashville to find a place that is cutting-edge to grab a drink. The Rutledge takes great pride in its bar service, from the elegant cut glassware to the presentation of its craft cocktails. The by-the-glass wine list is exceptional and worth a trip for that alone, but while you are there, don’t forget about the bubbles. In the mood for something a little harder? Since its opening in March, The Rutledge has been named a Great Bourbon Bar of the World. It’s perfect for a girls’ night out during happy hour Monday through Friday from 3–6 p.m. or a slightly sexier outing with a special someone.
“THE AMBIANCE IS SLEEK AND LUXURIOUS ALL WHILE BEING RELAXED AND EASY. NO MORE DRIVING INTO NASHVILLE TO FIND A PLACE THAT IS CUTTING-EDGE TO GRAB A DRINK.” October 2019 | Franklin Lifestyle
