LOCAL LIMELIGHT

HERE COMES THE BRIDE... WANT TO LOOK GREAT ON YOUR BIG DAY? START NOW WITH GREAT SKIN CARE! IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE A SKIN CARE ROUTINE, START RIGHT NOW. Pick products specific to your skin type (Normal, Dry, Oily, Acne prone, etc.) and be consistent. You won’t see results unless you are consistently using your products as recommended. If you’re not sure what products would work best for you, make an appointment with a dermatologist, esthetician or visit Sephora for some guidance. + Remove your makeup and cleanse your skin every night. Exfoliate 1-2 times a week. Exfoliating greatly improves texture, providing a smooth base for makeup. Don’t overdo it, 1-2 times a week is enough. More than that can dry out and irritate your skin. Always moisturize after cleansing, even if you have oily skin! I personally love moisturizers and serums with Hyaluronic acid for hydrating and plumping skin. + Use sunscreen daily. Not protecting your skin from the sun every day can cause premature signs of aging, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and dryness. + If you are planning on trying anything new – facials, laser treatments, fake tanning/self-tanning, hair removal (threading/ waxing), etc. – start at least 3 months or more prior to the wedding. Your skin can have an unexpected reaction which could take weeks to clear up, and you want to get this out of the way well in advance of your big day! + Drink plenty of water. Limit your intake of sodium, sugar and caffeine as these can cause puffiness, breakouts, and dehydration. + And lastly, try not to stress! Taking care of yourself will help you look, and feel, your most beautiful on your big day! Congratulations, and happy wedding planning! K AT H Y A D K I N S PRESIDENT, IMPACT 100 PBC

Impact 100 PBC connects and inspires women to improve our community by collectively funding multiple $100,000 high impact grants to nonprofits in southern Palm Beach County. The nonprofit organization is comprised of a growing number of women who donate $1,000 annually, pool all funds and vote to award multiple $100,000 grants in five focus areas: Arts, Culture and Historic Preservation; Education; Environment and Animal Welfare; Family; and Health and Wellness. Since 2012, Impact 100 PBC has awarded $3.3 million to more than 60 local nonprofit organizations. Kathy has been involved since 2011. “ I am so proud to be a part of this dynamic women’s

organization.

I started as a grant reviewer, co-chaired our Compliance Committee, then became President Elect for the 2019-2020 season.” The short term goal for the 2020 grant year is to reach 600 members and increase to 1,000 members by 2025. This grant year, 110 nonprofits applied for an Impact 100 PBC grant. Impact 100 is only able to grant one $100,000 grant in each of the five focus areas. Tough decisions are made because so many of the proposed projects are worthy of funding. That is why they continue to try and increase membership numbers. All women who would like to be a part of this powerful “giving circle” are warmly welcomed! To join, or to learn more about Impact

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables—like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks—that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or—yes, even avocados—you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters. CONTINUED >

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

HI T (High Intensit y Training) INCREASE THE FAT BURNING WHILE MINIMIZING THE TRAINING TIME

HIIT AKA HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL

ARTICLE NARISA STEINBERG, OWNER THE FACILITY | PHOTOGRAPHY AMANDA PAIGE

TRAINING IS A STYLE OF EXERCISE THAT INCREASES YOUR HEART RATE, BURNS CALORIES AT A MORE RAPID RATE AND FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME AT RESTING STATUS, INCREASES LUNG CAPACITY, BUILDS MUSCLES, AND BEST OF ALL; ONLY TAKES 20-30 MINUTES! The method of training is applicable for all levels of physical ability, weight, age and gender. If you’re wondering how much more effective and time efficient HIIT really is compared to a longer and more stagnant pace of exercise, consider the findings from the Journal of Physiology, concluding that 12 minutes of high intensity training three times a week, resulted in similar benefit as cycling for 40-60 minutes, five times a week. What is high intensity interval training exactly? High intensity refers to the amount of effort required during an exercise for a period of time under tension. Intervals are simply the time under tension in which you perform exercises, at a burst of increased intensity, followed by a short resting period. The idea is to raise the heart rate, burn more calories, increase endurance and burn fat. For those of us who have trouble self-motivating, or simply just can’t make time for our own health, HIIT training is something most likely to last long-term, as opposed to other training approaches. Aside from cutting the time of sessions and the number of sessions a week in half, the training efficiently increases the results. It sounds too good to be true, but science doesn’t lie. BOCA RATON ARE MAKING HAND SANITIZER FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY CORONA VIRUS. Nicholas Horowitz and Matthew Russo thought they'd be enjoying a week off from school and the beautiful weather spring time brings to Boca Raton. Instead the two high school friends who attend the Saint Andrews School were busy "cooking up" a plan to support and inspire our community. With all the reports highlighting the severe shortage of hand sanitizer due to the COVID-19 virus, the boys had the idea to make their own hand sanitizer. They are top AP chemistry students and were chosen to represent Saint Andrews for a state chemistry competition. The competition was canceled and they wanted to put their knowledge into action to help the community. Nick and Matt combined their love love of science and their desire to help others and developed Purificare2! The sanitizer which sells for $10 per bottle has sold out three times so far and they continue to make it around the clock. The boys said, “We want to help keep people safe and help those who have been affected and will continue to be affected by this terrible virus." Profits from the sanitizer are donated to charity. Nick and Matt are mindful of their safety and the safety of the community so they deliver the product to people's front door. Boca Style magazine is honored to bring you these hometown stories that we hope will inspire all of us to build a stronger community. We are humbled by the selflessness, generosity and kindness shown
