one’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves. As you read about the local artists in our community, you will see that art can be expressed in many forms. Whether it is through decedent food or unique jewelry, their stories of passion and dedication to their craft, we hope will also inspire you to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. So, Green Valley, while you fill your home with chocolate truffles and roses this month, remember to fill your heart too. Find what makes you feel alive—and don’t forget to share it with us.

A NEIGHBORHOOD GEM VENTANO ITALIAN GRILL & SEAFOOD

A TRUE, FAMILY-RUN ITALIAN RESTAURANT IS A RARE THING TO FIND. But that’s precisely what Ventano Italian Grill & Seafood is. The vision of award-winning chefs, Arnauld Briand and Carmine Vento, this restaurant is truly a beautiful venue. Gorgeous views from the outside patio seating take your breath away, perfect views of the sunset for a romantic evening, and the classic sight of the strip in elegant neon. The menu is loaded with traditional Italian dishes, everything you’d expect from an Italian restaurant of this caliber. However, it lives up to its seafood title as well, with some delicious recipes. Some of their most popular dishes are their Lobster Bisque, Grilled Auto Romaine, and the Shrimp on the Stone that has won them many awards. And their wine list has been called one of the best in Henderson. These dishes are all because of the owner and chef, Arnauld Briand. The once executive chef at the renowned Rainbow Room in NY, he came to Las Vegas and became the executive chief at Desert In and Ceasers Palace. He met his now good friend Carmine Vento at his son’s wedding, and they decided to open a genuinely unique Italian 10

restaurant soon after. Ventano is the perfect place for graduations, wedding parties, and even prom. A private room that can seat 110, with a dance floor, separate kitchen, and music, is why Ventano truly is the perfect place for any event — not looking for a big party? They’re also the ideal setting for a romantic evening out or a meal for the whole family! A staple of the community for 18 years now, Ventano’s moto is something to be remembered, “never say no.” No matter what it is, whether a significant event or a small issue, the family at Ventano will make you feel like you’re apart of their “Famiglia” by taking a ridiculous amount of pride in their work and restaurant. Perfect food and perfect service make nobody wonder how Ventano has won all their awards. GIVING BACK

S PR E A D T H E WO R D N E VA DA DELIVERING OVER 50,000 BOOKS A MONTH TO AT-RISK CHILDREN IS NO EASY TASK. Bringing the joy of books to all children in Nevada started with a lot less. Co-founders Laurie Hartig and Lisa Habighorst began Spread the Word Nevada (STWN) with a garage full of books and it grew to fill up a 13,000 square foot warehouse. Driven by its mission of “advancing childhood literacy within low-income communities by changing lives one book at a time,” over half a million children in need have benefitted from the four literacy programs run by the organization: Kids to Kids, Breakfast with Books, Books on Break, and Books and Buddies. These programs help to create a well-rounded literacy experience for 44,000 children a month. “Adoption Day” for the Kids to Kids program is a momentous day for students. Students and teachers gather in the largest

room in the school for a special assembly. Habighorst puts on her fun teacher voice to announce every student will receive books today and every month thereafter for as long as they are at that school. It is truly a humbling moment to watch students cheer and laugh when they hear the news. An overwhelming amount of students in Nevada struggle to maintain reading comprehension levels and STWN stands by book ownership as a solution to help overcome these obstacles. The act of choosing their own book helps children get excited about reading. CONTINUED >

Green Valley Lifestyle | February 2020

“Watching a child thoughtfully choosing a book to take home is one of the greatest joys,” says Habighorst. “They are so excited to read it to their sibling or parent at home. We need this to happen for every child.” Children who grow up in a home with books are able to foster a culture of reading as an individual and as a family activity. As a result, helping to ensure the enjoyment of each students growing home library, the organization’s Breakfast with Books and Books on Break programs aim to facilitate reading outside of school. Parents join their children for Breakfast with Books before class to listen to storytime, enjoy a light snack, and educational worksheets and reading logs. Books on Break brings the books to community sites where children gather to keep them engaged during the summer months and avoid “the summer slide”. When children are not afforded the family structure to read at home, STWN’s Books & Buddies program fills in the gaps. Proudly running five Mentor Centers in Las Vegas and Henderson, “buddies” sit down with students to help grow their reading skills and confidence throughout the school year. They commit to building a relationship with their students once a week with reading aloud and playing comprehension games. As a growing nonprofit organization, it relies heavily on the kindness of volunteers—for Books & Buddies and for cleaning and preparing books for delivery. Over 24,800 hours were spent cleaning books and mentoring students in one year through the help of about 8,000 volunteers. When the organization’s mission aligns closely with the community, great things happen for those in need. Although with many schools still on the waiting list, STWN works hard to provide each school with the books and resources needed to bring students closer to full reading comprehension. Through school sponsorships, generous grants, and its annual Storybook Gala, funds raised throughout the year directly benefit students in need. In the spirit of Mary Poppins, guests will experience childlike wonder after stepping into the “Jolly Holiday” cocktail party. The “practically perfect” dinner will raise the necessary funds to grow the organization’s valuable programs into more at-risk elementary schools. DIAMONDS

LOVE THAT LASTS THROUGH THE AGES

“A DIAMOND IS FOREVER.” Who hasn’t heard that saying before? Ever since the 1947 slogan, “A Diamond is Forever,” which was a marketing project of DeBeers. Most people these days associate diamonds and engagement rings as going hand in hand. Thus diamonds have become a symbol of love. However, up until 1939, only 10% of engagement rings had diamonds. The first well-documented diamond engagement ring belonged to Archduke Maximilian of Austria in the imperial court of Vienna in 1477 to Mary of Burgundy. In modern times no other object is as important to a woman as her diamond engagement ring. It is one piece of jewelry that every woman has dreams of since childhood. Generally made from platinum, gold, or white gold, and usually including diamonds, an engagement ring signifies that a woman is spoken for and engaged to be married. Choosing a ring may seem like a daunting task but an essential piece to any engagement. Some information to ARTICLE ZAK LODHI

keep in mind when considering the ring is the setting and, of course, the center stone, the diamond.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)

Ms. Matthews explained how they thought out the design of the home “We wanted a home that was comfortable to residents, without the small overcrowded feel. We had each looked at different types of care and facilities around the world and found that homes between 10-16 residents in a single-family. The house got the best care, was socially the happiest. Statistically, the fall rate was 50% less than in a large facility, so we went with a proven Scandinavian model with a mix of American ingenuity.” What she means by that, is that residents thrive because they are getting the care they need, with the just-right amount of socialization, and something they call the ‘secret sauce’ of purpose. “We had given ourselves research assignments to go get educated on what is and is not working in the industry worldwide. We came back to the table intending to provide the best

26

Green Valley Lifestyle | February 2020

possible care in the best interest of the resident, not the facility owner. We discovered some great places to emulate, and always improve upon. We got certified in different methods and philosophies of care. Still, most of all, we designed something that we would have wanted for our family members with a caring culture that also respected the care providers, as well. What they ended up with was Quail Assisted Living Home. A unique and perfect mix of big and small. Everyone says you must see it because there is nothing like it in the Vegas Metropolitan area. Luckily, they do give free public tours for the benefit of educating the public on the new industry standard. old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.
