Lifestyle Letter

Santa has his list, so make your own! I

recently attended a series of classes to help me work through a bit of the grief I was feeling after the sudden loss of my only brother last year. I took so many gems of wisdom away from the book we read as well as from the room full of folks who quickly felt like old friends. One thing I did was make a few lists.

I made a list of things I miss about my brother. I made a list of some of the favorite childhood memories we shared. And then I started making some lists that didn’t make me want to cry. I thought about what he’d be proud of when he thought of me. There were at least half a dozen states between us so we didn’t see each other as often as I would have liked, but I know he was proud of his two nephews, the life I’d created for my family and the mother I’d become. He was proud of certain accomplishments and he wasn’t afraid to let me know it. So rather than make yet another to-do list or a wish list of household projects or gift ideas, and rather than fret about making a list of things I need to do differently in the new year, I decided to end my year by making some lists where I wouldn’t be crossing things off. A few of my lists have titles such as:

HOME MEET LUCY & WYATT

ARTICLE EMILY HAWKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY JACOB MEYER

A

re you looking to add a furry friend to your home this holiday season? Meet Lucy, year-and-a half year old Pointer mix. Lucy loves to learn new things and would thrive in a home with a family who can teach her tricks and help her continue to improve on her obedience training. Lucy enjoys long walks, playing with her many toys, and puzzles. If you think Lucy sounds like your kind of dog, email Adoptions@GreatPlainsSpca.org to learn more, or view hundreds of other pets looking for homes at GreatPlainsSPCA.org. Winter is upon Kansas City, and while they are celebrating a year of lifesaving at Great Plains SPCA, they are also preparing for a cold winter ahead. With temperatures dropping, they will see even more pets in desperate need of warm shelter, medical care and forever homes. Their team is hard at work preparing for winter, and YOU are a vital player with the power to save pets like Wyatt… When they found Wyatt, he was on a short rope tied to a porch in the heat of summer. The HERO Team rescued him, and quickly discovered he was suffering from the often-fatal parvovirus. Wyatt would not have survived another day had he not been found and rescued. He now has a second chance at life. Wyatt is just one of more than 35,000 local pets they will help by year-end. Great Plains SPCA is providing a variety of lifesaving programs to all of our community’s pets, and the people who love them. They are creating families through adoption, reuniting lost pets with their owners, connecting seniors and kids with shelter pets, providing quality veterinary care to pets who might otherwise go without, and so much more. Please join they Great Plains SPCA family this winter in celebrating the lives they’ve saved in 2015 across Kansas City, just like Wyatt’s, and the lives they will touch in the coming year. They are a local nonprofit and do not receive any federal, national, or United Way funding. Their nonprofit relies on the benevolence of local animal lovers. Any donation between now and December 31 will be doubled to go twice as far during their December Match Campaign. Make a difference and save a life at GreatPlainsSPCA.org. 20

Revitalizes a Downtown Church and the Downtrodden

FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS LAZARUS MINISTRIES HAS FED, CLOTHED, AND SUPPORTED KANSAS CITY’S HOMELESS ARTICLE KATHERINE BONTRAGER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

n 1996, the congregation at Grand Avenue Temple United Methodist, at 205 E. 9th Street in Kansas City, Mo., had shrunk to some three families—a far cry from the hundreds it counted among its ranks in the glory days. The church had been active since 1865, but its community had altered greatly in the ensuing years, from a prosperous, busy commercial district to a neighborhood abandoned. “There was a potluck luncheon after church one Sunday,” recounts Jessica Brooks-Bryon, the Executive Director. “The congregation was wondering if they should shutter their doors. Then, in walks a homeless man. Instead of being afraid or offended, they asked him to join their meal. This was the pivotal moment where Lazarus Ministries all began.” “They continued opening their doors to the homeless and hungry, and it was such a success they needed a few other UM congregations to come and help,” continues Jessica. “Programs continued to grow, and in 2009 Lazarus Ministries was incorporated as a 501c3 nonprofit organization in an effort to grow this program from a tiny church outreach into a fortified nonprofit.” The charity refers to those it serves as “Sojourners” and helps them through five outreaches: Lazarus Table, Lazarus Boutique, Emergency Women’s Shelter, Sojourner Health Clinic and Supportive Housing. “By referring to those we serve as Sojourners, we intentionally emphasize that the homeless individuals are people on a journey; they are in transition and are worthy of care and consideration,” says Jessica. “And Lazarus Ministries strives to help them on their journey to a better place.” Lazarus Table, the charity’s cornerstone program, has grown from one meal to three hot meals each weekend, and in 2014 provided more than 31,000 meals. The clothing boutique, meanwhile, met immediate needs for clothing and personal items

for close to 3,500 individuals. And the Emergency Women’s Shelter provided 2,090 nights of shelter to homeless women. Finally, the Sojourner Health Clinic, which opened in 2004, treated 502 patients in 1,563 patient encounters in the past year alone. Sojourner is a free clinic developed and managed by medical students from the UM–KC Medical School. On Sundays, the students—with faculty supervision—provide blood-pressure monitoring, blood-sugar testing, a dispensary for medications, and an on-site physician. There have been more than 1,000 patient visits and 2,400 prescriptions filled since the clinic opened. All of these programs are staffed thanks to volunteers from more than 150 community groups and congregations of all denominations throughout the Midwest. In fact, a force of more than 2,000 volunteers contributed more than 10,000 hours to all Lazarus Ministries projects in 2014 alone. Funding stems from individuals, churches, community groups, foundations, and a few small fundraising events. Plans are in the works for the charity’s first significant fundraiser in the next year. Those wishing to lend a hand with this grassroots organization should consider volunteering—or even joining the charity’s Board, says Jessica. “We have an outstanding and dedicated Board of Directors, but it’s small team and we need to grow our board to not only diversify the labor and increase our resources, but we’re looking for committed volunteers interested in urban poverty and helping make change in the community. And of course, on a programmatic level, we’re challenged with finding additional funding and stocking items most in-demand in the boutique: men’s jeans and shoes and new underwear.” It’s easy to fall into stereotypes of what a homeless person looks like, Jessica adds, but the truth will surprise you. For instance, Jenny’s apartment building was sold without

24

Johnson County Lifestyle | December 2015

notice to residents, and all were forced to move out. With inadequate resources and no support system, her cycle of homelessness began. “Jenny spent two winters in Lazarus Ministries’ Emergency Shelter for Women,” says Jessica. “It became clear she needed someone to walk her through the steps it takes to get a life back on track. Jenny spent 2.5 years in our Supportive Housing program, living year-round in a basement apartment at Grand Avenue Temple and participating in mental health counseling, case management, and other components of the program. Working through emotional damage from homelessness, learning to live independently, applying for supportive programs (such as disability), and securing employment all take time. The strength of Lazarus’ program is walking alongside our clients while giving them responsibility and rebuilding their self-esteem.” This past summer, Jenny moved into an independent housing program for seniors, and Lazarus is extremely proud of her journey out of homelessness. The organization will walk with her every step of the way: helping Jenny furnish and move into her apartment, aiding with the $150 deposit, and most importantly, keeping her connected. “The relationship doesn’t end when our residents move out,” says Jessica. “This is just one step in Jenny’s journey, as she’ll inevitably continue to encounter hurdles within the system. And we’ll be there to help her through those challenges.” Jenny comes back every week to volunteer and see friends at Lazarus Ministries. While this isn’t required, it’s important for everyone to feel like they have a community, or as Jenny says “Another place to call home.” For more information, visit GrandAvenueTempleUMC.org/Lazarus-Ministries.

Area Couple Takes Christmas Décor to New Heights WEEKS OF EFFORT BRING WINTER WONDERLAND TO LIFE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN MOTLEY

t’s December first and most of us are just starting to think about decorating for the holidays. But for Dave and Lori Convy, Christmas arrived weeks ago. The Convys are known for transforming their Overland Park home into a winter wonderland complete with numerous, intricately decorated trees, multiple nativity scenes and a variety of unique Christmas items collected over the years. “I start decorating right after Halloween,” says Lori. “It takes at least four full days to complete and then I usually tweak things all the way to Christmas.” She admits to putting up at least 12 trees most years, ranging in height from four to 10 feet, and has had as many as 17 trees up at a time. “This is my hobby and I am into it big time,” explains Lori. “Some people think I’m crazy and others want me to help them decorate. “My goal each year is to change it up. Some people thing it’s all new stuff, but I simply rearrange it!” Lori says she likes to create a winter wonderland with a sense of amazing enchantment. “I can sit and look at it all day.” 26

The stone nativity scene came from a store in Council Grove, Kansas, called Apothecary. It weighs about 250 pounds and Convy says she loves it because it looks antique.

Convy says she loves all things candy striped and lime green, so you see a lot of that in her trees.

The Convys’ extensive collection of Christmas salt and pepper shakers and cookie jars fill every nook and cranny at the holidays. “My husband gave me my first set of shakers years ago and it was off to the races.”

The Santa Tree displays ornaments by Babs Mellor, a sculptor from Wichita. “I’ve ordered them for years, for myself and friends, and each year’s Santa is unique, signed and dated,” says Lori.

T

he holiday season seems busier than ever these days. Between the school programs, work parties, church events and family gatherings it can be hard to enjoy a quiet evening at home between Halloween and New Year’s Day. I have started my own family tradition of making time for us at home during the holiday season. Preparing a meal with my children, making traditional candies, stringing popcorn, and setting our holiday table are just a few of the special activities we enjoy together. As my children grow it is amazing to see what the holidays mean to them and how they embrace the things we as parents introduce as traditions. Gathering around the table at the holidays are some of my most cherished memories. Whether it is a simple brunch on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, or a more formal dinner with friends or neighbors, gathering at the holiday table is a gift we can treasure as much as anything that might be found under the tree. Set aside some time to set a beautiful table this holiday season, and take the time to sit down, relax, and enjoy what you’ve created.

Autism Services Change Lives

Varsha’s future is bright, thanks to Easter Seals Midwest Autism Services. Autism is an epidemic with no cure. In fact, 1 in 68 children nationwide will be diagnosed with this mysterious disorder. At Easter Seals Midwest, we focus on providing comprehensive, earlyintervention services that help individuals with autism, and their families, build stronger, happier lives as part of the community. To better serve the Kansas City region and those impacted by autism, Easter Seals Midwest is pleased to announce expanded programming. In addition to our early childhood services, which help at-risk children achieve more in life, and our community living and employment programs for adults with developmental disabilities—including autism—we now are offering various autism-focused services. From in-home parent education opportunities to PEERS®, a social skills service for teens with autism, and from workshops and presentations to school observations and IEP support, Easter Seals Midwest is working to ensure that people with autism reach their fullest potential—but we need the community’s help. It is only through the generous support of the community that these programs are accessible for those who need them most. There are many ways to give back to Easter Seals Midwest, and Missouri tax credits may be available for your gift. For more details, to learn about service eligibility or to request an autism presentation, please call Easter Seals Midwest at 816-476-4011, and visit EasterSealsMidwest.org to learn more about how we’re helping Kansas City families. lan Becker doesn’t like being told what he cannot do. At the beginning of his financial services career, when he worked solely in

insurance, he wrote policies that were best for his clients. Then he was told he couldn’t offer certain products even though those products might be the best fit for his clients’ circumstances. “When you’re captive rather than independent, you are at the mercy of the company you’re contracted with, even though it should be all about what works for each person," says Becker. "That’s why I went out on my own; I

can do everything under one umbrella and serve clients in a way that is most beneficial to them.” That’s the short story of why Becker, president and chief executive officer of Retirement Solutions Group, Inc. (RSG), started his retirement planning and financial services firm. The focus is laser clear: to offer retirees and pre-retirees a comprehensive approach to retirement and financial planning, which includes but is not limited to the use of insurance products. Despite being born in Louisiana, Becker calls Kansas City home. “I’ve claimed Kansas City as home since the seventh grade,” says Becker. “The Chiefs and the Royals are the only two teams I’ve ever rooted for, and I cannot think of a better place to raise a family.” Like his father, Becker is a veteran. At 17 he asked his parents if he could join the Navy, then served two tours in the Gulf. “I believe that everyone should serve,” he says, “whether that’s in the military, the Peace Corps or Job Corps.” After trying other jobs on for size, Becker, a Shawnee Mission South alum, reconnected with his best friend from high school who was selling insurance. His competitive streak took over and his gift for gab CONTINUED >

propelled him into the insurance world. He spent the next decade working in union benefits, in the long-term care and Medicare domains and managing a Pennsylvania Life branch in Overland Park. He then struck out on his own and now enjoys working one-onone with clients, providing solutions to their problems and getting to know them so he can help secure their futures. “What’s funny about this industry is that financial advice is always questioned, no matter how expert the advice,” says Becker. “There are so many voices out there, it can be difficult to know who to trust. To me, trust starts with truly getting to know clients, then treating them like family. It’s important that I explain things in a way that makes sense to each person, and that my entire staff is knowledgeable and welcoming. We are all passionate. We care about what we do and it shows in our conversations and our commitment. We’ve all experienced and empathize with much of what our clients go through such as disability issues, considering assisted care options and loving people who suffer from Alzheimer’s.” After seven years in Olathe, Becker recently purchased a building in Overland Park with space to hold workshops and training events. With an estate planning attorney and investment advisors in the building, RSG will continue to fully serve clients in one place. “My team specializes in people’s tomorrows, providing them with plans for a ‘sleep well’ retirement using our proprietary Round Table Retirement Process™,” he says. And now Becker is adding a new title to his resume: published author. After years of prodding from clients and colleagues, his first book, “Return on Investment or Reliability of Income? The True Meaning of "ROI" During the Golden Years!” will be published in January. The book explains his philosophy and shares client experiences. “What I want people to know is that there are no bad investment products,” says Becker. “Only bad uses of investment products in a given scenario. Ask questions. Look for information. But know it will ultimately come to a leap of faith, and you’ll eventually have to make a decision to realize your retirement and financial goals.” Learn more at RsgUsa.net or call 913.685.9422.

Coach Still Active AT 84, THIS ATHLETE SHOWS NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN

on’t tell Paul Sexton that at the age of 84 you just have to sit around in a rocking chair. The former Shawnee Mission South boys basketball coach and Olathe resident is still active and still following the game of basketball. When the weather permits he can be found on a golf course four days a week. Sexton was the Raiders' basketball coach for 19 years from 1977 through 1996. During his tenure as the coach his teams posted a 255-131 record. The Raiders were undefeated at 24-0 in 1990, second in 1983, third in 1988 and fourth in 1978. His teams captured seven Sunflower League titles. It was his high school coach, Joe Urban, in Meade, Kansas that sparked his interest in becoming a high school coach. “I loved sports and participated in football, basketball and track,” he says. “We had the same coach for all three, Joe Urban. “All of us players idolized him. He had a huge impact on my career decision, helping me get a basketball scholarship to Dodge City Community College.” His college career at Washburn University in Topeka was interrupted by two years in the Army. His coaching career included stops in Liberal, Topeka Highland Park and Manhattan before becoming the SM South coach in 1977. His career record was 477-296. Now retired athletic director Bill Tiegreen hired Sexton. “SM South athletic program experienced a very high degree of success from 1966 through 1992 (when Tiegreen was athletic direc-

tor), due to the excellence of the coaching staff and Paul Sexton was of the most successful of them,” Tiegreen says. “He is a winner in more than just his coaching ability. “His concern about the development and mentoring of the young men he was coaching, also included helping them to develop skills needed for successful adult living.” Kevin Rabbitt was the senior point guard on the undefeated and state championship team in 1990. He is now the CEO of NEP Group, Inc., in Pittsburgh, Penn., an international company that provides video services for a number of sports events, concerts and awards shows across the globe. “As the leader of the team, Coach Sexton was the rock that guided the success of the program,” says Rabbitt. “He adjusted

his style each year based on personnel playing to the strengths of his team. “He was known for his game preparation, making sure his team was prepared for the opponent, yet he knew that the opponents needed to adjust to SMS more than adjusted to them. He instilled confidence in his team and never over-coached in a game situation. He trusted his players to make good decisions and took their input on critical decisions.” The former SM South coach doesn’t want to single out any players from his long coaching career. “In my 38 years of coaching, there are simply too many outstanding players to single out just a few,” he says. “Each one brought his passion and skills to the game in his own way. I am grateful for their commitment and I’m proud of every one.” Sexton has been out of coaching for 19 years now, but is still an avid fan of high school and college basketball. What changes has he seen in the sport? “The game and coaching has changed quite a bit since I retired,” he says. “The three-point shot is much more prevalent now and the game is much more physical, hard-driving and fast paced with a lot of hand-checking. “Rules about recruitment of players from outside attendance boundaries have relaxed tremendously. That has had a huge impact on the game in our area.”

Parting Thoughts

A Grown Up Christmas WORDS MOLLY WILLIAMS

C

hristmas is for children. We know that, and we believe that, because we were children, and we remember. We remember that giddy feeling of the last half day of class before two weeks – two weeks! – of vacation from school. We know the delicious torment of walking slowly by the ever-growing pile of presents under the tree, wondering what shaking or poking we can get away with, knowing that a jolly red-coated whiskered old man will certainly bring more, no matter what we deserve. We can almost taste the cookies. Nothing could be better than being a kid at Christmas. Even as a young adult it was grand. Freed from school worries by the exclamation point of finals and not yet burdened by having to reciprocate the parental gift giving (who had funds for that?) that jingle-belled break was a self-indulgent orgy of soaking up mom’s attention, not making the childhood bed and catching up with high school friends. Yes, Christmas is definitely for children. And then I had my own. My daughter was born just six weeks before her first Christmas, so chances of anything being remembered were pretty slim, but my husband and I were struck by the grave responsibility of establishing holiday traditions. Every family’s is different, and when making our own, we could pick from each of ours or start fresh. Do we open presents Christmas Eve or morning? Or a little of both? Midnight Mass? Tricky with kids, but oh so mystical and enriching. Do we still make the rounds of holiday open houses, or do we stay at home and sing our own carols by the piano? Christmas brunch or dinner? Turkey or ham? All Santa or all wrapped, or some of each? The choices! And it was so important, or seemed that way, because what we do with her, we knew would form the bedrock of HER traditions, and the things which would be her family memories, and maybe even passed down to her children and theirs. In the end, of course, we blended, and the ones that worked, we kept. The weekend before we do a slow drive of the neighborhoods to check out the lights. Christmas cookies are a huge production, and the two days for making and delivery are

scheduled way in advance. We still go to my mother’s house on Christmas Eve Eve, leaving the actual Eve for our tiny family to sit by the fireplace, write the Santa letter, and put out cookies and oatmeal for the reindeer. My husband always does a dramatic reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas, and the carols get sung. Our moms now come to our house Christmas morning for a warm and lingering brunch. Natalie still thinks, as all children do, that Christmas is the best thing on earth.

There, all around me, as I do for others, and make theirs special, is my grown up Christmas. Childhood has nothing on this. But I have learned that it is even better doing it all for them. My greatest holiday joy now is what I see in her face as we bake, and in my husband’s as we sing, and in my mother’s as she toasts her family with the required Bloody Mary, and in my brother’s kids as they jostle on the couch, and in the faces of my parish community surrounding me at church belting out the requisite “Joy to the World.” There, all around me, as I do for others, and make theirs special, is my grown up Christmas. Childhood has nothing on this. I can’t wait for December.
