Some of our traditions are not possible this year, but as I reflect back on my own childhood and the things that made this season memorable, it really is the simple things that come to mind: driving around looking at lights, decorating sugar cookies while listening to Bing Crosby, throwing handfuls of tinsel on the tree and adorning it with stringed

With being one of ten children, opening presents was a bit of a free-for-all at my home, but there was always a moment of calm before the storm to first sing happy birthday to Jesus and then to open our stockings one at a time in an orderly fashion. Among our stocking goodies, there was always a guarantee that an orange would be at the bottom of the sock and a candy cane hanging on the outside. I don’t think any of us ever ate the orange, but regardless, it was always there. Our holidays were never extravagant, and I’m sure they were a little

Perfect Timing Doesn’t Equal Perfect Results By Marc C. Shaffer, CFP®, AIF®, EA Principal at Searcy Financial Services, a Fee-Only, NAPFA Registered Advisory Firm Skip the bad days? concept.
It sounds like a great
How many of you would choose to skip right over 2020? If only we all had perfect foresight – both in life and with finances. Here’s one thing we know about investment markets: in election years, years where we experience a pandemic, years that are filled with big news and years that are calm…they fluctuate.
It’s easy to look back in time and think you should have made one financial decision over another, but it can be a dangerous mental game to play, especially when it leads you to try timing the market. How many good moments in life would we miss by skipping a day that seemed bad? How much opportunity would we miss by stepping out of the investment markets because things seem bad? Potentially, quite a lot. A recent study, which analyzed the hypothetical growth of $10,000 invested in the S&P 500 Index from January 1, 1980 through August 31, 2020, found that if you missed out on just the best five days over that period, your return could be 38% lower than its fully invested potential return. Missed out on the best 50 days over that period? You could be 93% lower. Wow! How would you ever know which five or fifty days could be the most costly out-of-the-market days over a 40 year period?
Staying on the sidelines waiting for a “bad day” to jump in at a deal could have a dramatic impact on your investment portfolio as well. Another study found that just one out of every 20 trading days closed at a price that would have been considered the absolute lowest. If you’re looking for how things could have gone better, you’ll probably find an answer, but is it valuable? The study showed that when comparing the strategy to buy at the lows vs. dollar cost averaging of investing the same amount every month, buying at the lows only outperformed the alternative by less than one percent. That’s a lot of work and potential for costly mistakes for such a low result.
Volatility, market sentiment, emotional investors—these are factors of investing you can’t change or accurately predict. A level of risk will always come with investing, so minimizing the impact of outside factors and not letting your own emotions get in the way are key. It doesn’t take investing at a bargain price to reach your investment goals. By following a disciplined approach to your investment plan, which takes into account your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance level, combined with an understanding of the economic landscape and investment strategy, you can design an investment plan to help meet your needs.
Market timing calls for knee-jerk reactions to current events and quick decisions that may have no basis in research. A disciplined strategy calls for patience and sound analysis. If outside factors cause you to want to make big changes in your investment portfolio, it may mean you need to take a closer look at how your investment strategy was designed and why you don’t feel confident in the measures you’ve already taken. Working with a financial professional who can help you navigate the investment markets and develop an investment strategy that helps meet your needs can alleviate the need for you to do day-to-day portfolio management tasks. Have you considered finding a professional who can manage these details for you?

ARTICLE RACHEL MURPHY PHOTOGRAPHY AARON L IT’S NOT OFTEN THAT BUSINESS COMES FIRST AND PASSION SECOND. It’s so rare that if I hadn’t met Jim Pierce, the pragmatic and salt-of-the-earth owner and head distiller of Of The Earth Farm and Distillery, I wouldn’t have believed it. But I learned how sometimes, making the most of what you have gives you your next passion project. A scant hour from Johnson County, the small community of Richmond, Missouri, drips with bucolic bliss. The hills roll. The bees buzz. The apples loll lazily on trees that struggle under the weight of their bounty. It’s those trees that first inspired Jim Pierce. Pierce and his wife, Sara, both came from rural backgrounds. They moved to acreage in Ray County in 1990 and developed their land with herb and vegetable gardens. A gift of heirloom apple trees from their eldest son, Jim, turned into a small orchard that has grown to seven acres with 26 varieties of apples, along with peaches and Asian pears. Pierce had returned to school at the age of 35 to earn a degree in horticulture, so he knew how to grow fruit. The question was what to do with it. To add more diverse income, he attended a fruit growers conference in 2008 that opened his eyes to the possibilities of distilling. As the only attendee of a workshop on distilling by esteemed late professor Kris A. Burglund of Michigan State University, Pierce had a wide array of Eau de Vies to sample. As a non-drinker, he was prepared for the intense burn that he associated with hard alcohol. “He had me approach it just like wine--nose it, take a little in your mouth, breathe it in--and apparently there’s a little thing in the back of your mouth called a nasal bud-and it was like standing in a cherry orchard. It was amazing to me. Then I swallowed, and this was 80 proof. I’m a big guy and didn’t want to make a face, so I was prepared to pretend that it didn’t burn, but it didn’t. It was just a gentle warmth. It was a moving experience,” Pierce says. CONTINUED >

He was hooked. Instead of becoming merely a connoisseur, he wrote a grant to the state of Missouri to start a pilot program to begin distilling his apples. He purchased a Portuguese copper pot still and got to work. His apple brandy, which is aged in Missouri white oak barrels, was born sometime later. Farming teaches patience as well, because, through many grant writing stretches, a recession, and a pandemic, Jim and Sara are still going, with a new tasting room that opened a little under two years ago. Of The Earth Distillery and Farm is that though--a distillery and a farm. The Pierces raise heritage hogs as well as lambs for meat. They offer apple picking or apples by the bushel. They’re now trying their hands at making charcuterie, once again with the blessing and grant money of the state. Patience is rewarded. Of the Earth is growing incrementally. With the tasting room open on Fridays, Saturdays,

Why You Should Send a Settlement Offer
Settling a divorce or family law matter is something most parties desire. Trials are expensive. Not only are they expensive, but in a trial the result rests in the hands of one family court judge. Most reasonable parties do not want to put their case in the hands of one judge. To settle a divorce or family law matter, it usually takes one party to take the first step towards settlement. In other words, somebody has to extend the olive branch first and broach the topic of settlement. Settlement negotiations often begin with one party sending an offer through their attorney to the opposing counsel. While initial settlement offers do not always result in a settlement, it can open the door to more negotiations. Many ask if it matters who sends the initial settlement offer. If one party issues the first settlement offer, some worry that offer shows weakness. In some cases, where the positions are far apart, some fear sending a settlement offer is futile. However, sending a settlement offer does not ordinarily signal weakness.
Instead, it shows that a party is willing to be reasonable to reach a constructive resolution to the case. It can indicate that they are ready to swallow their pride to reach a resolution. Most judges, before they hear a trial in a divorce or family law matter, also want to know if the parties have attempted settlement. When parties have not even made an attempt, some judges may have concerns. Settlement negotiations are technically inadmissible at trial. It is possible, however, that a judge could hold it against a party if they did not attempt meaningful settlement negotiations. Judges often know about the settlement efforts from pretrial or settlement conferences in a case. Instead of worrying about whether it looks weak to issue a settlement offer, parties should instead focus more on appearing reasonable to the court. Being reasonable often results in obtaining a positive result if the case ends up in trial. Further, a settlement offer can ultimately lead to a settlement. When there is a settlement, parties save money on attorneys’ fees. The parties can also put to rest the emotional anguish and stress of being in the midst of a divorce or family law matter. However, it is vital to have enough
information about the finances or the particulars of the case. These details can be gathered through formal or informal discovery to make an informed settlement offer. To make an informed settlement, parties often need the tax returns and statements regarding all marital property and debt. When valuations are needed, the parties can hire experts to value marital property such as real estate, stock options, and business interests. With children involved, the parties may need school and medical records. Once this takes place, most parties should think about sending a settlement offer. Sending the initial settlement offer may not work, but it can begin the conversation. It also signals a willingness to negotiate and be reasonable. RE PURPOSE OLD ATL A S ACCE NTS: Here I am repurposing an old atlas, but the atlas idea can be swapped out for any other paper item you have on hand such as unused sheet music, book pages or brown paper bags. Here are a few ideas on how to use your repurpose paper: 1. Stocking Stuffers: roll pages and stuff them in empty stockings until Santa comes. 2. Tablescape: slip whole sheets under plate settings and google “origami tree” and make a personalized seating arrangement. 3. For my citrus tablescape I shopped my house and found a striped throw blanket to use as a tablecloth and tea towels to use as napkins. (Tip: it’s all about the color and pattern you have in mind, not necessarily the original purpose of an item.) I completed the look by using more of my thrifted brass candlesticks, wooden cutting boards and finally adding dried oranges with faux greens to top it off. For my atlas themed tablescape I followed the same idea—thrifted cloth napkins and white dishes, gold chargers that I already owned, and old atlas pages used under plates and as place setting cards.

Surprisingly, this ice bucket will last for hours once placed out for use and after you’re done, put it back in the freezer (adding a bit more water) for another time. I typically use one ice bucket the whole holiday season with a last hurrah on New Year’s Eve. 1. Large container 2. Small container (just a bit bigger than the diameter of a bottle) 3. Small rocks (enough to fill your small container) 4. Filler of your choice (pine clippings, cranberries, flowers, sliced fruit, or even things like beads or glitter!). important part of this time of year is thinking of family and dear friends, and all of us are definitely searching for gifts to commemorate this beloved season. White Buffalo Trading Company can fulfill this desire in spades! Pam Minick, owner, began her company some 20 years ago with five hundred dollars and a wellspring of talent and ambition. “Over 20 years ago, I was making Native American dolls using soft buckskin, horsehair and glass beads, while doing a lot of beadwork shows and teaching. I saw many beautiful pieces and met many artists there,” Minick says. “I’ve always loved Native American jewelry. Each piece is unique, and the artists put their hearts in their pieces. You can see 10 rings with turquoise in them, and each one will be different. Depending on the mine the turquoise is from, the colors can be very different. For instance, if it came from the Dry Creek Mine it can be a pale blue, almost white in color. From the Fox Mine it could be a dark forest green. But it’s not just turquoise, semi-precious stones such as amethyst, coral, peridot, jasper, onyx and obsidian come in many colors and shades. For instance, spiney oyster can be pale yellow, orange, red to a dark purple depending on the age and depth of the ocean.” Her mother had her own shop, first in the Wisconsin Dells, then Illinois. Minick spent a lot of time there with her, learning. She is grateful for her integrity and giving nature, along with her great eye for Native American jewelry. This made her quite successful and she maintained her business for 30 plus years. “Drawing from these experiences and my ability to get along with others was an easy progression to want a shop of my own. I had some retail experience that helped me in the other areas of the business,” Minick says. “I really love this jewelry and frequently find myself when showing a piece saying, ‘I really love this one!’ on every piece I show, but it’s true. Every piece is handpicked for the uniqueness and beauty.” The array of jewelry pieces she carries in her shop draws customers from all over the world, including Sweden and England. She invites people to view them on her Facebook page and Instagram, which she likes because she can post daily and quickly. Some stand out, most unusual pieces she mentioned are a three-piece set with lander blue turquoise set in each piece. “It is the highest priced turquoise per karat and hard to find,” she says. She also mentioned a squash blossom necklace from the early 1970’s from the Lone Mountain Mine. “I shop everywhere in search of the most beautiful Native American pieces, and welcome all to take a look and call or visit our shop,” she says. White Buffalo Trading Co. is located at 13328 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, Kansas 66213. Find them on Facebook and Instagram. Call them at 913-789-8858.

T
HE STRETCH OF TIME BETWEEN NEW YEAR’S DAY 2020 AND THIS THANKSGIVING HAS FELT LIKE
AN ETERNITY. Other times, it seems to have flashed by in a matter of seconds. Each day brings a different combination of the same handful of activities: scrolling social media in hopes of landing on some good news, taking a walk with our families after dinner, distanced conversations on a neighbor’s back porch or joining another virtual event hosted on Zoom. While this repetition is frustrating at times, it’s crucial to make choices that protect the well-being of those most vulnerable in this pandemic, while also giving ourselves a breath of fresh air by shaking up the monotony. Even for just one hour. So as we move into colder weather, and the time spent indoors will naturally increase, Lifestyle Magazine has brainstormed a few fun things to do that are also conscious of the health and safety of our community.
watercolor painting The uncertainty of 2020 has pushed some to try new things — rollerblading, baking sourdough bread, growing produce in a backyard garden or perhaps redecorating the guest room. If you haven’t found “your thing” yet, or are maybe looking for a new creative outlet, watercolor kits from Carly Rae Studio may be the perfect solution. You can order the kits to be delivered to your home. This is something just you, your partner or the whole family could try one evening. Even if you’re worried you “aren’t creative enough” — local artist Carly Robinson has you covered by providing all necessary supplies in each watercolor kit.

PHOTOGRAPHY ESTÉE JANSSENS
Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it
can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.
With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,
anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.
