A month of cheer
The holiday season is upon us, and it is such a special time in Kansas City! I'm not sure how you spend your Kansas City Decembers, but we have a bucket list full of things to cram into the month. Typically, our favorites include a holiday drive-thru light show (we usually do the one at Legends), the Christmas train display and holiday train at Union Station, seasonally-flavored ice cream at Betty Rae's, shopping for gifts in downtown Weston, getting a live tree from Fulk's Tree Farm in Platte City, and hot cocoa at the Ice Terrace at Crown Center (though my kids have yet to figure out ice skating). If you can believe it, we have still never done the Plaza lighting ceremony — who knows, maybe this is the year!
This month's magazine is chock full of holiday magic, from recipes to streamline Christmas gatherings, ideas of spots to start new traditions, and lots of crafts and wrapping tips! We've got an inside look at the Truitt Hotel at the Plaza here — my wedding anniversary is actually the day after Christmas, and we always do a staycation at a nice hotel in Kansas City to celebrate. We stayed at the Truitt two years ago and it was so luxurious — we did a date night at the Nelson-Atkins (just blocks away) and ordered takeout to enjoy in our comfy room. Highly recommend!
I hope your December is full of holiday magic, Kansas City traditions and loved ones — however you spend it!
Until next month,

XO HIFI
ARTICLE BY JENNY VERGARA PHOTOGRAPHY BY @IVYWILDVISUALS
During the day it is easy to drive right by XO HiFi, Kansas City’s newest cocktail and snack bar with a high-fidelity sound system located on the Westside, and not even realize you’ve passed it -- and that is all by design.
“The idea of discovery and anonymity became the design concept for the XO experience.”
Noah Manos, founder of the design-build company, Paper Airplane, located in Denver Colorado is the owner and design partner behind XO. He said he bought the lot that housed Mr. Brook’s garage on the Westside, but he initially had no plans to do anything with the building.
After meeting people who live in the Westside neighborhood, like Will and Ellen Trakas, who own Trakas + Trakas, a local architectural firm, who helped Manos execute the paperwork needed for his new space, they encouraged him to listen to what the neighbors wanted to see there. Manos did, and recruited business partners to help bring his vision for XO to life. He reached out to Will Minter and Mitch Foster who also own ESP, a high-fidelity listening lounge in Denver,
and convinced them to partner with him to open his own 30-seat HiFi vinyl lounge here.
“Coming from Denver, we’ve lived through a 15-year period of growth where we had outside developers coming into our neighborhoods and start building without understanding the culture of what was already there. That is how erasure can occur in a neighborhood,” says Manos. “I kept that experience in mind when talking to people from the Westside. I thought, how can I retool my idea, and create something cool and meaningful for the Westside. That is really what anchors the whole design ethos of XO. How do we preserve the fabric of the building that is already there, but also elevate it and create a new context for its next life?”
The HiFi listening lounge has its origins in Japan. Kissas or kissaten are intimate listening rooms found in Tokyo, where listening to new music on an excellent sound system is often given more thought (and budget) than the atmosphere or even the menu. Here is where you can hear a deep cut from an album you may have never heard before with incredible sound quality and clarity. Today, they are referred to as “HiFi bars” in the U.S. and offered with some food and drink.
“What was most interesting about the original building was how anonymous it was. The garage blended in with its surroundings, and it had two very tiny windows. You could easily drive by and never notice it,” explains Manos. “The idea of discovery and anonymity became the design concept for the XO experience. That is where the breeze block screen that covers the front windows on the outside of the building came from. It was intended to peak someone’s interest about what was inside with its solid appearance. XO is not a speakeasy or a clandestine thing that you have to get access to, it is for everyone, but we wanted to feed that joy of discovery for our guests.”
Once inside of XO at night, something magical happens. When it gets dark there is a single streetlight across the street and between that, and the cars that drive by with their headlights on, the light projects through the breeze block and shimmers across the walls of the bar in interesting shapes and patterns that continue to change throughout the evening.
“XO is not a speakeasy or a clandestine thing that you have to get access to, it is for everyone, but we wanted to feed that joy of discovery for our guests.”
Made for true audiophiles—XO guests come ready to settle in for a drink and some food as a wave of sound ebbs and flows throughout the space around them. In addition to the music selections, ESP also manages the bar program at XO, that has a list of cocktails on tap, beer and a natural wine list.
Local James Beard Award nominee for outstanding chef, Johnny Leach, has developed the food menu for XO, where he is serving Japaneseinspired snacks like edamame dip with fried yuba chips, Agedashi tofu with daikon radish
and shimeji mushroom, salmon crudo donburi, or rice bowl, and two delicious sandwiches that have everyone talking --- a nori egg salad sandwich on milk bread and a delicious pork curry katsu sandwich.
Come with your listening ears on and prepare to sit back and enjoy the curated selection of music, food and drinks in the flickering shadows of the breeze block at XO.

CRAFTING CHEER: DIY WINTER CRAFTS
ARTICLE BY ERICA BIBB | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
ORNAMENT CLUSTERS
SUPPLIES
• 22 gauge wire
• Ornaments of at least 3 varying shades and sizes
• Wire snips
STEP 1
Cut desired length of wire for a cluster, about 24”
STEP 2
Add an ornament about 4” from one end of the wire and twist the wire around the top of the ornament to provide a base for your cluster. Twist about 5 times. You should still have about 4” of wire at the end; you will need it to tie onto your garland, tree, or wreath.
STEP 3
Continue adding ornaments to the wire, alternating sizes and colors until you have 4-6” of wire remaining.
STEP 4
Twist the remaining wire around the top of your final ornament 5 times to secure all of your ornaments in place. Making sure to leave at least 4” of wire in place at the end in order to tie onto garland, tree, or wreath.
STEP 5
Use the ends of the wire to attach to your holiday item of choice!!
Pro tip: Keep your clusters to the 24” length to keep from getting too heavy and/or having ornaments pop off. Ornaments will pop off at times, but they will still look gorgeous and you can always glue the ornament back onto to the top. Simple, gorgeous, and impactful!
DIY WINTER WREATH
SUPPLIES
• pruning scissors
• grapevine wreath form
• 22 gauge wire
• wire snips
• hot glue gun
• hot glue
• 3 types of fresh cut greens (you can also use artificial and have a wreath that will last you year after year!)
• fresh eucalyptus
• pinecones
• bells or ornaments
• ribbon
STEP 1
Trim greens removing any bald spots and extra length. Lengths of greens should vary between 5-10”.
STEP 2
Create clusters with the greens and eucalyptus, using all 3 of the greens. Create the cluster and then wrap the cluster with the 22 gauge wire onto the grapevine wreath form (starting at the top of your wreath), making sure that the wire is tight. Wrap 5-7 times to ensure everything will stay in place. Do not cut the wire. Set to the side to use for the next cluster.
STEP 3
Continue adding fresh green clusters going down your wreath and slightly alternating the angle the greens are pointing. Finish your final cluster and give yourself 3-4” of additional wire to twist close at the back of the wreath to finish and secure.
SIMPLE GORGEOUS IMPACTFUL
STEP 4
Place ribbon at the end of the clusters to hide any ribbon. We tied a knot with the ribbon around the wreath and then wrapped several times around the wreath.
STEP 5
Tie on ornaments, bells, or pinecones to hang from the wreath. This is optional, you may just want to add a pretty bow or even keep it as is at this point! When tying on the extra baubles, remember to cut your ribbon at varying lengths, so the bells or ornaments can hang at different levels. Tie the 3 ribbons together and then tie as one onto your wreath.
STEP 6
Add desired number of pinecones and put in place with hot glue. You can wire on the pinecones, but I like the control of placement is easier with the hot glue method.
Pro tip: keep taking a step back as you construct your wreath and keep in mind that sometimes less is more. Don’t be afraid to make edits and trust your eye!

KANSAS CITY'S SIGNATURE COCKTAIL
ARTICLE BY HOLLY TWADDELL
The Horsefeather is sweet 'with a little heat' cocktail that is perfect for anyone! The Horsefeather is a midwestern whiskey-based twist on the classic moscow mule. Let’s talk about this KC favorite, how it became what it is today, and how to easily mix up your own. So where does this Kansas City cocktail story start? Most mixologists agree it is from a combination of three origin stories:
There was a recipe published in The Kansas City Journal in 1898, that called for the refresher mix of “cracked ice, a peel of lemon, a jig of whiskey, and a dash of orange bitters.” Then in 1991 a book by Gary Regan’s “The Bartender’s Bible” has details of a blended whiskey-based “Horse Feathers” but not the modern-day recipe we have all come to love. Out of all the stories, the most mentioned is the one based out of Lawrence, Kansas from the Paradise Café, a small meetup spot of
the 90's. They say that the bar decided to add Old Overholt Rye whiskey to Regan’s Horse Feathers, which was then the recipe that followed its bartenders to new scenes all over the metro, and it quickly became a local favorite.
The Horsefeather is a perfect balance of fun flavors. You get the warmth and richness of whiskey, the spice heat from ginger beer, and a hint of citrus from a squeeze of lemon. It’s a little bit spicy, a little bit sweet, and refreshing for any occasion. The dashes of bitters add a layer of complexity and ties everything together. It’s a drink that keeps you coming back for more. Take a trip downtown to visit the West Bottoms Distillery Co. to enjoy a Horsefeather cocktail. They make some of the best award-winning Kansas City-style whiskey around.
The Horsefeather
Ingredients
• 2 oz of Rye whiskey (bourbon for sweeter)
• Ginger beer (to top off)
• 4 dashes of Angostura bitters
• A squeeze of lemon (about a quarter of a lemon)
Instructions
1. Fill a highball glass with ice.
2. Pour 2 oz of whiskey over the ice.
3. Add Angostura bitters.
4. Squeeze in the lemon, then drop it into the glass.
5. Top off with ginger beer.
6. Stir and serve
Tips
• Use a high-quality ginger beer for the best flavor. The spicier, the better.
• Experiment with the amounts of lemon to find your perfect balance of citrus. A highball glass is traditional, but feel free to use whatever glass you have.
• Head downtown and order your next Horsefeather at the West Bottoms Distillery. They always mix up great pours.

DIY Gift Wrapping That Stands Out During The Season
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
‘TIS
‘Tis the season to get crafty, clever or characterized! Well-wrapped holiday packages create immediate enthusiasm and somehow seem to make gifts more meaningful. Whether going for shiny, vintage, colorful, rustic, playful or eco-friendly impressions, the following are some Do-ItYourself gift-wrapping ideas to make the wrapping process even more satisfying. Simply applying jute twine to gifts provides a ‘less is more’ vibe.
ADD NATURAL TOUCHES TO CRAFT PAPER:
For gifts with a rustic, organic feel, use seasonal accents, such as sprigs, pine cones and cinnamon sticks, tied up with twine, encircling recycled paper for the wrapping.
FIRST INITIAL DECORATION:
In lieu of a gift tag, attach an oversized paper mâché letter of the recipient’s first initial to the top of the box. The letter then can serve as customized décor, too.
POLKA DOTS:
Wrap gifts in plain craft paper and then cut out big, multicolored polka dots to glue down. It’s hard not to smile at big, bright dots.
CARDBOARD BOX SNOWPERSON:
Wrap three or four boxes in white paper, with different gifts inside, and then stack them. Tape the boxes together, tapering to the top. Glue buttons on the bottom ones, create a snowperson’s face on the top one, with carrot nose cut out of orange paper.
‘tis the SEASON
Attach a real hat, if desired. Tie wider, festive bow around the snowperson’s ‘neck.’ Add a real corncob pipe for a bonus finishing touch, if preferred.
MINI TREE GIFT WRAPPING:
Pine needles and small tips of real tree branches make quick and easy mini Christmas trees that can be glued onto Christmas gifts. They will smell nice, too.
BOOK PAGE WRAPPING PAPER:
Repurpose old book pages by cutting out shapes of dreidels, snowflakes, ornaments, candles or reindeer to paste on gifts.
DIY STAMP WRAPPING PAPER:
Wrap gifts in solid colors of paper. Secure ink stamps and an ink pad in a themed color(s), and stamp the paper as much or as little as desired.
UNBOXED:
Apply other types of containers, rather than boxes or bags, for gift wrapping; examples: canisters, pillow cases, baskets, fabric scraps, maps, glass containers, towels, blankets, scarves, Bento bags (also called triangle bags or origami bags).
Making Spirits
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
