GOOD TIMES
Ahhhh -Fresh Air Does a Body Good Although it may be getting colder outside, we found kids of all ages enjoying the outdoors. It feels good to see folks walking the trails at Powder Valley, riding Grant's Trail, playing pickleball and tennis on the courts, practicing yoga on the lawn at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center, and having fun in our parks.
Recess The children at Villa di Maria Montessori School have boundless energy. Bundled up and ready to go? Yes. Healthy and well? Yes. Who else misses recess?

GETTING WELLER IN BODY, MIND AND RELATIONSHIPS
PHOTOGRAPHY DANNY ZOFNESS
CA N YOU H E LP M E ? PER DICTIONARY.COM, THE WORD “DOCTOR” HAS MANY DEFINITIONS. One is “an eminent scholar and teacher.” Most people consult a doctor to either treat a diagnosis with medication(s) or perform a surgical procedure intended to ease pain or fix a condition. This is what we call healthcare. Doctors say if our body is absent of any ailment or symptom, then we are considered healthy. But so often we hear, “Mr. Smith was healthy before he had his heart attack,” or “Mrs. Jones was just diagnosed with cancer, and she is the healthiest person I know.” Being in good health is not about treating an isolated ailment or fixing a certain condition. It’s about creating an environment that allows your body to thrive and be 100% functional. I am in awe that our body was created with a God-given intelligence. This divine wisdom knows all that we need to experience life. Our neurologic system controls every life-sustaining function. Our central nervous system gives life to every cell, tissue, and organ. But, here’s the thing: If our body was created to take care of itself, why isn’t it? Why, or how, do we develop health conditions? Each nerve in the entire body meets at the base of the skull. A small vertebra protects this vital junction of the nervous system

Montessori for Life “superhighway” in your spine. That vertebra is called the “Atlas,” or cervical vertebra — C1. If your Atlas shifts out of the proper position and cannot properly support your head, nerve signals traveling from the brain to the body become distorted. At Getting Weller, we utilize 3D spinal CT imaging and infrared technology to ensure that your spine is both neurologically and structurally sound. If your spine is neurologically compromised, abnormal nerve signals can diminish the body’s natural ability to maintain itself. In time, the body will grow to develop a health condition, unresolved issue, sickness, pain, or disease. As doctors, we aim to educate those who have lost hope when it comes to their health. We have seen the results that come once your head is on straight (literally). Our patients talk about their improved health from the perspective of being a better spouse, co-worker, student, athlete… a better human being. We call it Getting Weller. Healthy Body, Healthy Mind & Healthy Relationships all depend on a properly functioning nerve system.

THE REMARKABLE RECOVERY STORY OF PEGGY TAYLOR.
IN 2001, WEBSTER RESIDENT PEGGY TAYLOR CAUGHT A COLD. That virus caused permanent damage to Peggy’s heart. “For years, I thought I was fine with medicine,” said Peggy. In 2018, her heart started to fail, and she received a defibrillator and an ablation. By April of 2019, Peggy’s physician presented her “I could be hooked up to monitors and live a

“I placed my life in God’s hands. I received the Last Rites. I arranged my funeral,” Peggy remembered. “The hardest part for me was

saying goodbye to my two girls. I could never have imagined having to do that. I didn’t want to say goodbye. But there were things I needed to say.” When Peggy woke up after surgery, she immediately looked to her husband Lee for assurance. “At the time, I didn’t know if I had the transplant or not,” Peggy said. “There was a possibility that it might not have worked. I wanted to hear him say that everything went well.” After speaking to her husband and confirming that the transplant was successful, she had a thought. “I wanted to look at my chest,” said Peggy. “I told myself, ‘Just to sit up and look. No big deal.’” Peggy describes what happened next as an incredible blessing.

“I looked down and I saw my mother, who passed away years ago, laying on top of me,” Peggy said. “She didn’t speak to me. She was just there. Her body was face down against my chest like she was hugging me. And from that moment on, I have never had one bit of pain. I believe she was taking away my pain. I know now that mothers, loved ones, are always with you. And they are always protecting you. For me, that was a miraculous moment of comfort.” And then, Peggy experienced another miracle. “It could have been 30 seconds later or 30 minutes later,” Peggy remembered. “It’s the typical light people talk about. I saw a door open. I think of it as God’s Robe. There was the Light. I remember

on track. When COVID hit, she wanted to find ways to continue staying active. Having two bad knees meant walking around the neighborhood was not an option, and she isn’t a fan of joining a gym. But Peggy had always been a bike person. “Riding a bike is my jam!” Peggy exclaims. However, with knee issues and a fear of losing her balance and falling, she wondered how she would ever be able to ride again. Peggy had passed the Pedego bike store many times. Every time, she felt a pull to go inside. Knowing nothing about electric bikes, she gathered information. In early March, armed with research and reassurance from her sisters who are avid traditional bike riders, Peggy requested a private meeting with Bill and Carla Sauerwein, the owners of Pedego St. Louis. “I had to be their worst customer,” laughed Peggy. “I had a list of 30 questions. I told them I had health issues, but I didn’t tell them I had a heart transplant. All they knew was that I had bad knees. Bill put me on a Boomerang Bike and said, ‘Peggy. This bike is going to change your life.’ I scoffed that off as a typical sales line.” Little did she know that he was right. Peggy felt her strength return as she began riding consistently. “I didn’t realize how weak I was back in March,” Peggy said. “I felt good, but I wasn’t very strong. But now, after riding my bike over the past ten months, Bill was right. My bike has changed my life.” Peggy rides every day, sometimes twice a day. She has a group of friends she rides with called the Pedego-Go’s. “I would ride all day long if my battery would allow.” Peggy has logged over 2,180 miles on her bike since March. She averages 30 – 35 miles a day. “I pedal 99.9% of the time because I want the Peggy on Grant's Trail

T’S HARD NOT TO BE HOPEFUL ABOUT THE FUTURE
We are in the life-affirming business of working with children
between the ages of 3 and 12. I look at the children and think about what is possible — they make me believe that something better is around the corner. I see in them the reasons to make sacrifices and endure things for the greater good. I know these children will grow into caring individuals who want to make a difference, and they very much believe they can.

We definitely live that here. In June, we had a Montessori classroom open. You have never seen happier, more joyful human beings. Children leaping out of cars so lit up with excitement to see other children, to be back on campus, in classrooms that they love with Guides and adults they love. It was so energizing. It was by far the highlight of my summer, and I couldn’t stop talking about it to anyone who didn’t have the privilege to see this. It was a sign of life again. It showed us how hungry they were for that connection. OUR COMMUNITY CAME TOGETHER Our parent community has been overwhelmingly thoughtful, respectful, supportive, and generous in both big and small ways. The children have been champs at wearing their masks and washing their hands copiously. They are mindful because they are so happy to be together. Our entire community is willing to endure anything less than ideal because they care about being together. Our community’s support allowed us to do our absolute best to serve our children, our families and take diligent care of our people. It’s so gratifying, and it helped sharpen my focus on what we are here to do and what matters most. I’m never not hopeful about the future. CONTINUED >

THE MAGIC HOUSE 2021 – AND BEYOND We’ve made considerable investments in updating the museum to make it a safe place, now and for the future. This positions us well for 2021 to serve families both inside and outside. My purpose is to make sure the Magic House stays open for future generations. REINVENTING THE MAGIC HOUSE One of the unexpected silver linings that came out of 2020 was creating virtual field trips. We now have an entire virtual side to the Magic House that would have never existed. We reach rural schools as well as schools across the county; East Coast schools are registering for our programs. I’m hopeful about The Magic House’s incredible reach and impact. It has really been a blessing. PARTNERING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE I am hopeful about finding new ways to make a difference in children’s lives. Our work with the Dana Brown Charitable Trust showed us what is possible. The Foundation reached out to us in April to help engage children in urban areas. We put together kits of hands-on materials that

children could construct to create toys, games, or activities. We distributed over 2,000 kits. It meant so much to me that the Magic House could provide hope and happiness to kids.

A NEW FAMILY DYNAMIC For me, 2020 changed the family dynamic. There was a premium placed on being out in the open and doing things as a family. I found myself having conversations with my kids that I otherwise wouldn’t have had, which in and of itself is a blessing. I can only hope that happened for every other household, too. My hope for 2021 is that the family nucleus remains a focus. A NEW RESURGENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY I’m hopeful for an incredible snap-back and a huge resurgence, but with a new perspective. 2021 will bring an incredible desire for human interaction. The leisure and restaurant industries that were the hardest hit will be the first to see that snap-back. And I hope it is a huge resurgence, almost to the point where there may not be enough capacity to serve all the demand. THE ANTICIPATION OF SOMETHING NEW ON THE HORIZON We are lucky to be in a vibrant metro area. Driving through Kirkwood and walking around in our communities feels hopeful: people are upbeat and positive. I’m hopeful about “what’s next.” Some of our best and brightest companies came out of tough economic times. People are at home right now in their garages, creating the next big thing, and we don’t even know what that is. Here is what I do know — it will be launched through a virtual platform. Maybe one day someone will invent a way to virtually send the ‘new car’ scent of a 2021 Audi.

Leaders like you become catalysts for change when they do three things: pick a problem to address, invite others to join

people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey. CONTINUED >

2. Invite Others to Join You When you’ve settled on the problem you want to tackle you should immediately begin looking for others to join you. In the book, Rob and I recommend starting with friends and family; you already have influence with them, and chances are you’re of like mind in many areas. Go to those family members who frequently ask you for advice or seek your opinion on personal matters, as you likely have greater influence with them. To move beyond family, however, you’ll need to take a leap of faith and begin sharing your passion for solving the problem with other people. Passion attracts, and when people come to you with interest, don’t be afraid to ask them what they think or invite them to improve your ideas. Empowering people to help you creates a bond, and once that bond is established, you will quickly discover who you can truly work with and invite them to take action with you.
3. Do What You Can Where You Are Action is the final step. It doesn’t have to be big or grand; it doesn’t even have to be guaranteed of success. Nothing happens in life until someone does something, and once you take your first step, the next step will come into focus. Remember that transformation is a process, not an event. It takes time and repeated action to bring about positive change. So focus on purpose, not perfection, and do what you know to do. These three steps may seem too simple, but I assure you they work. The goal of all transformational movements is making things better however possible. Incremental change is better than the status quo; and when you’re truly committed to making your community a better place, you know that any improvement is a significant improvement.
