Reason #58 I love Austin!
JANUARY 2016 publisher
Cherice Engel | CEngel@LifestylePubs.com
A
hhh, take a deep breath in, and exhale out slowly. The holiday season is over; it is time to enjoy a month of relaxation and recovery. Sure, the hub-bub of busy life continues, but with the chilly weather, and lul in activities, January is a time to slow down. I've never been one to make a New Year's resolution. I have tried a time of two, but never really seem to hold up the resolution for very long. Having learned this about myself, I now spend my January in reflection of the past year, and planning for the year ahead. I think about what I would like to make sure I do this year. Will we be exploring here in our own back yard, taking the children on adventures, traveling to a National Park, a new state or perhaps another country; there is so much I want to do and see, the options are endless. With that in mind, we have put together a travel issue for you. Many of the featured places are just a road trip away, but we have also included a fun trip to another country! And if you're year does not include traveling, have no fear; we live in one of the most sought-out vacation cities in America. Which brings me to... Reason # 58 I love Austin - As an Austinite, I do not have to travel more than 20 minutes in any direction to experience something new, unique, funky and fun. Whether my family and I choose something with a city vibe, outdoor exploration, community based, or even a small drive to a winery, the options are never ending. Austin has so much to offer, that we do not need to travel to have a wonderful vacation this year. However, if traveling is in your dreams, hopes or plans this year, it is my hopes that this January issue is something you enjoy cuddling up to these cold evenings as you plan your year ahead. Until next time,

main in the comfort of the hotel, restaurant, and tourist packed rim. These wonders will require a fair amount of effort to enjoy, but the Canyon greatly rewards those who dare. Backpacking the Grand Canyon offers an up close and personal look at the Grand Canyon that no other tour of the winding, dusty paths can. Not day hikes, not mules, not rafting along the mighty Colorado. With nothing but the red gravel and rock under your boots, there is time and opportunity to appreciate the full splendor of the place. You can stop to identify brittle brush and catclaw acacia, reach out and touch the delineation between Mauv Limestone and Bright Angel Shale, feel the temperature rise with the descent toward the center of the earth. It’s a hike not for the feint of heart; A seven-mile trek down winding, sun soaked trails that will make feet ache and knees jar. But along the way towering rock formations like the Esplanade and the Granite Gorges will exhilarate and glimpses of the mighty Colorado, first spotted from Skeleton Point on the South Kaibab Trail, will motivate. And once the base is achieved, boots can be set aside and sweat and dirt washed away in the crystal clear water of the Bright Angel Stream, surrounded by riparian vegetation that lends an otherworldly atmosphere. Shade from a splendidly lush world bursting with coyote willow and hanging gardens soothes sun weary eyes. The beauty and the warmth envelop the lines of tents set up along the stream at Bright Angel Campground and the cabins at Phantom Ranch, nestled in the shadow of the Canyon. This mingling between man and nature is what makes the Grand Canyon more beautiful, more wondrous even than it appears from the outside looking in and the balmy base of the Canyon A view looking up at one of the canyon walls from the trail.

ture away from the city lights. In the dark an elusive ringtail on the search for scraps may hover at the edge of campsites or a UV light may illuminate a scorpion skulking beneath the rocks. There are no cars out here, no televisions or errands to distract from the beauty and peace of nature. It’s restful and serene, which is fortunate because the long climb up begins in the morning. But the climb up endless dusty switchbacks will be rewarded with trails running alongside trickling streams, Indian ricegrass waving in the welcome breeze, and shady respites under leafy redbud trees. The temperature will slowly decline as the rim approaches and more and more day hikers will pepper the path as the trailhead nears, but the victory of the feat will not be theirs. The full beauty and splendor of the Grand Canyon belongs to the adventurous, the intrepid. Beauty and splendor those who hover along the rim will never know. 14

This is apparent when you walk through its doors to a homey atmosphere and multiple regulars enjoying coffee and conversation. Trianon is ideal for the customer who wants to know exactly where his or her coffee comes from. The small shop features a wall of dozens of roasts ground right here in Austin. Trianon keeps things honest and simple, but still puts care into every drink made, as seen in my own carefully decorated latte. Skip the whole milk here—nonfat allows the rich flavor of the coffee to fully come through.

The perfect place to base in Sonoma wine country is the captivating town of Healdsburg, nestled along the Russian River at the juncture of three prime winegrowing regions — the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley wine appellations. Centrally located to over 100 world-class wineries and tasting rooms, Healdsburg is the ideal spot to discover Sonoma County wine country. Healdsburg combines small-town charm, stunning vistas, and award-winning vintages; all centered around a picturesque town plaza lined with boutique shops, restaurants, tasting rooms, art galleries, antique stores and bars. and home to many fine restaurants from celebrated chefs. CafĂŠ Lucia is a traditional Portuguese restaurant run by the brother and sister team of Manuel Azevedo and Lucia Azevedo Fincher, who grew up in the area after their parents emigrated from Portugal. Dry Creek Kitchen is an upscale dining experience with a relaxed atmosphere, from award-winning chef Charlie Palmer. Mixing vibrant American cooking with world-class wines in an intimate setting, Palmer offers visitors a glimpse of the culinary magic that made Michelin-starred Aureole one of the most celebrated restaurants in Manhattan. I was surprised to learn that not all of them do. Selma and I flew to Kentucky on American Airlines — which allows carry-on pets on connecting flights through only 10 airports. We connected through one of them, Charlotte. Also, be sure to make a reservation for your pet at the time you book your flight, as they only allow so many animals per flight. BOOK PET FRIENDLY LODGING
In Kentucky, Selma and I spent a few nights at Gratz Park Inn in Lexington, and a night at Shaker Village — both of which were very pet-friendly, with plenty of outdoor space or nearby parks. A site like GoPetFriendly.com can help you find accommodations that will welcome your pet, and also has other helpful resources such as a road-trip planner, off-leash dog park and pet-friendly restaurant locator, and veterinarian listings across the U.S. and Canada. For our Kentucky trip, I contacted the Tourism/CVB board, which was extremely helpful in providing pet-friendly options around town and a visitors guide. I recommend checking with these sources for any destination you visit. I was able to take Selma with me to a local craft brewery, and discovered that the famed Kentucky Horse Farm was dog friendly. PREPARE YOUR PET BEFOREHAND
Don’t wait until the day of your trip to coax your pet into his or her carrier. Get them used to it ahead of time, especially if they aren’t familiar with using a kennel. Put their bed or favorite blanket inside with some toys and leave it open for at least a few days, if not longer. Most animals will start going inside and eventually hanging out as a “safe place.” I helped Selma by coaxing her inside with treats. At first she would back right back out, but soon she was going in herself and even napping there. This made zipping her up into her carrier for the flight a lot easier and less traumatic for her. She was already familiar
with her carrier as a comfortable place of refuge. You might also have things such as calming collars or drops on hand; there are natural stress remedies available at most pet stores. BUILD A PET KIT
Have a checklist of everything you need, and put it together ahead of time into a Doggie Travel Bag. Here is my recommended list: • Your vet information and pet shot/health records • Collar with tags and leash • Comfortable travel blanket • Collapsible food/water bowl and water bottle • Food • Plenty of high-value treats • Your pet’s favorite toys • Pick-up bags for pet waste • Travel size packet of baby wipes • Any medications or other emergency items your pet may need • Picture of your pet, printed or on your phone, in case they get lost • Other optional items may include brush, lint roller, shampoo, etc.

It’s London on a rare and wonderful sunny day and the breeze blowing over the Thames is more than refreshing, it’s magical. It’s a city that’s full of history, art and culture and there’s so much to see and experience, but visitors to London aren’t often able to give the city the time it deserves. However, a bit of plan-

DAY 1
Day 1
Westminster Abbey
Big Ben towers above Parliament.
The London Eye offers the best view of the city from across the Thames.
Covent Garden is alive with music, performers and fine food every day of the week.
Start with a tour of Westminster Abbey, the city’s most famous cathedral. Opening hours and available tours vary from day to day, but during the week they usually begin at 9:30 am. Check their website for an updated schedule. Next, head to Parliament where guided tours of the House of Lords and House of Commons are available on Saturdays throughout the year and on most weekdays whenever Parliament isn’t in session. A photo in front of Big Ben afterward is all but necessary. After partaking of afternoon tea at a local café, enjoy spectacular views of the city from across the Thames on a 30-minute turn around the London Eye, the Ferris wheel opposite Parliament. Finally, head to Covent Garden for an evening of live entertainment and a mocha as you browse the shops and bakeries and settle down for dinner. 28

Parting Thoughts
Family Road Trip WORDS ALISSA PALLAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
he van is packed and were ready to go. All. Six. Of us. We are headed to Colorado, where my husband and I grew up, home; well at least
it used to be. In fact, it was our hometown until the spring of 2014. We're ready, I think. I have snacks galore, games, coloring books, crayons, iPads, and movies. Thank goodness we bought the model of van that plays movies! We're going to need it. Blankets for each child, Dollie, a stuffed Mickey Mouse, water bottles, what else could the kids possibly need? Hubs and I talked about driving at night while the kids were sleeping, but quickly squashed that idea. We have 2 sound sleepers, one little guy who wakes at the slightest noise and a baby. Our little guy is a nightmare with missed sleep and baby girl will be a wild card, so leaving early in the morning to miss rush hour is our plan. I have breakfast packed for the road, and a lunch packed in a cooler with plans of stopping at a park to let the kids run off some energy. We couldn't possibly fit another item in the well packed van. As we begin our journey, I keep reminding myself that this is supposed to be fun, so put a smile on your face and enjoy the ride. I'm with my family and we are going back 'home' for the first time in almost two years! An hour into the trip my hot tea is all gone and I need to make a pit stop. Hubs is out of coffee and squirming a bit in his seat too, but we have an unspoken rule; we're not stopping until one of the kids has to. And thankfully they do; and then again and again and again! I plug in a movie for the kids – ah, quiet! I begin to reflect on this family vacation. At the beginning of the year, when I was planning our vacations, I had visions of tropical drinks, beaches, romance - a child free trip. This is not a romantic getaway. It's a road trip. Instead of beaches and tropical drinks, it's a car and juice boxes. Yes, I am thrilled to be visiting home, the mountains, my brother and friends, but a small part of me is resentful that I'm not sitting on a beach with a Mai Tai in my hand. Finally, after a restless night’s sleep in a hotel and another day filled with driving, movies, frequent stops and irritability, we make it to my brother's house. We arrive, cranky and tired, yet surprisingly we're no worse for the wear. As I hug my brother and sister-in-law I realize: it was worth it! I'm completely content to not be on that tropical vacation. We are on a family vacation and these moments are priceless. My boys are hugging their Uncle B and the love I feel all around is worth every second of that grueling drive. Family, love, fun and yes, even some chaos, is ahead and I can't wait. Even though I was dreaming of tropical paradise alone with the Hubs, this family road trip is the perfect vacation after all.
