The
Love Local Issue

Love Local

Sometimes I refer to this issue as the “Love” issue. And why not? After all, February commemorates the holiday of love and all the ways we love to show it. Whether chocolates melt your lover’s heart or expensive trinkets from the local jeweler, much can be given and appreciated, and right after the holidays, no less. Yet, we can also show love to those meaning so much in our lives in many ways. A kind note to cheer a friend is no less a gift when meant from the heart. But we take it a step further this month as we expand the concept to not just love but “Love Local.” The Lake Minnetonka Lifestyle community has much we can love.
While we survive the chill of winter, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community.
“Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee or a glass of wine and check out the following pages. Relax and spend some time with our magazine to catch up on everything local.
In this issue, we revisit a friend of the magazine at her new endeavor at Hola Yoga. Four local, independent bookstores share their passion for connecting the community to the magic of reading and handpick their favorite romance novels to set the perfect mood for the season of love. Love stories also find their fairytale endings at Jett Beauty, as Amy Kelly and her team help brides look radiant on their big day. We check out romantic weekend getaways right here in town, and in Jen’s Life Minded column, she worries that the younger crowd just doesn’t get this dating thing quite right these days.
We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month.
Thanks for letting us be a little part of your life. Our hope is that we inspire you to love local just a bit more than you did before.
See you around the Lake!

Two of my college besties and I once had a discussion (in a long series on this topic) about finding “the one.” We were young and naïve and romantic. We were raised on Disney princesses and John Hughes films. You really can’t blame us. We were women

YOU’VE GOT NO MAIL
who would be wooed. My friend’s father, George, weighed in. George was a professor. Calm. Wise. Intellectual. I liked George right up until he explained to us prattling, twenty-one-year-olds that there is no “correct person” singular. A myth. Particularly in regard to marriage, he claimed. He believed a person developed to a point of being ready for lifelong commitment and then just
Life Minded
ended up with whoever was across from them at the time.
We were horrified. And we didn’t believe him. We believed in love at first sight. White horses. Kismet. The fairytale we would tell our children and then our grandchildren. We would tell tales of the WOOING. In retrospect, George made some very solid points.
My parents had a rom-com-worthy meet cute. My Mom sat toward the front of the college history class. My Dad sat in the back in his pressed Gant shirts and desert boots. He thought her hair was beautiful. He asked to borrow her history notes one day. This is somewhat ridiculous since he was a history major, and she was not. But it worked. Very smooth move.
I recently ran across the Valentine’s card he gave to her in 1965. It was their first date. They saw a movie and went out for drinks. A Valentine’s card on a first date would be considered a very bold gesture by today’s standards. Over the top. But this Valentine in 1965 remains intact today. Cherished historic artifact. That guy…he wooed.
My last first date was in 1992. We went to the science museum and then out to Green Mill for pizza and
hot chocolate. Shortly thereafter my future husband mailed me a cocoa packet with a note written on a napkin from Green Mill. I still have it. What followed were stacks of letters and cards in his now very familiar looping script. Family heirlooms. I was wooed. This is not how relationships work now. Not the meeting. Not the communication. Not much of it. I can’t pretend to understand what it’s like to date in 2025, but I have adult children and single friends, and the process is quite bewildering to me. The on-ramp to actual dating seems so long that by the time people date, they are about to break up. The phone seems to be the third wheel in modern love stories. I barely trust someone to choose adequate avocados for me through an app, but people do get matched and find lifelong commitments through the phone.
Occasionally, I’ve suggested to the young ones they could simply walk up to someone and start a conversation. Create an opportunity. They have assured me that is absolutely out of the question in almost every setting. It seems harder than ever to have a meet cute without an algorithm.
I worry most that they have no written record of their lives. Entire relationships start and end over Snapchat. No love letters. Text threads that get deleted. Accounts that get blocked. Digital photos in the digital trash. Certainly, very few Valentines saved like precious jewels for generations. I have Rubbermaid tubs in my basement filled with letters from elementary school through young adulthood. So does my husband. Notes from friends written in class. Letters mailed from India and Thailand and France when friends were abroad. I have all of my parent’s Airmail letters when my Dad served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Hundreds of greeting cards. I have no solutions. But maybe, like consumer purchases…shop local for love. Meet the sellers. Don’t try to find special at a superstore. Get a referral from a friend. The next part is how it has always been. A complete leap of faith. But maybe…send a card or two. Record the unique moment in time in a letter, a card, or the written word, even if you never learned cursive. Make love last. Write it down.

N EWINLAKEMINNETONKA:HOLAYOG
Studio owner Melissa Schoeller started Hola Yoga as a way for those to feel part of a community. “I really wanted a studio in the community where I live and a place where people can come and have a strong sense of community,” says Melissa. “That is really what the vibe is at the studio.” Melissa herself has been teaching yoga and leading yoga retreats for more than 20 years and wanted to create a studio that would be an inclusive place. “Everyone is welcome, whether they are new or not. We want everybody to feel comfortable being in this space,” says Melissa. “It’s a very welcoming and nurturing place.”
The Twin Cities is fortunate enough to have a wide variety of fitness studios and gyms, but Hola Yoga sets themselves apart, offering a range of classes from calming and soothing (classes such as sound healing) to higher intensity, such as deep core Pilates and Strong in 45, their most popular class. It is unique to have a space that offers not only yoga but also Pilates, Barre, and HIIT. Truly a class for everyone and teachers who are committed to making a difference.
Hola Yoga sets itself apart, cultivating community and helping students find their own calm in body, mind, and heart
ARTICLE BY SARA HOEMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA KO PHOTOGRAPHY

“The classes are amazing, but our teachers go above and beyond in connecting with the students,” shares Melissa. “This is why students keep coming back.” Melissa is also committed to making it easy for students to take classes as little or as often as they would like. Memberships are available, as well as class pack options and drop-in classes. For new students, the intro pass is seven days of classes for $28. At the studio, convenient parking, mat rentals, and water are available. Additionally, a small number of classes are offered on demand. Hola Yoga meets students wherever they are in their yoga or health and wellness journey.
And in a month that focuses on matters of the heart, this may be the perfect time to start your yoga practice, as the benefits of yoga on heart health are finally being recognized. According to an article from Johns Hopkins, simply put, the ability of yoga to calm the mind and reduce stress offers many heart benefits. Reducing high blood pressure, lowering blood glucose levels and lowering cholesterol can be chalked up to taking regular yoga classes. Hola Yoga takes it a step further with their commitment to community and connection. Finding a strong sense of community is also beneficial to mental and physical health — something especially important to Melissa.
“Students are making connections and spending time together. They’re hanging out together, having social time outside the studio, and chatting about yoga retreats.”
Particularly in a post-COVID world where loneliness is at an all-time high, this kind of space is essential in communities all across the country. “Knowing that heart health thrives on the human connection, Hola Yoga is beyond physical,” says Melissa.

One of the best ways to create connection and a key part of the yoga experience that Melissa is passionate about is the yoga retreats. “Right now, there are 13 yoga retreats scheduled between now and 2026,” says Melissa. Melissa has been organizing and leading these global retreats for years, most recently through Ritual Union (RU) Yoga Retreats. There is a yearly retreat to Costa Rica, and upcoming retreats include Italy, Joshua Tree, Hawaii, Spain, and Sailing in Croatia & Greece. “The retreats are a great way to reset. It’s about connection, community, and adventure with the yoga classes,” says Melissa. “People come from all over the United States.” Depending on the size and scale of the trip, Melissa will bring co-teachers with her to ensure that students get a wide variety of class offerings during the trip and have time to enjoy the destination. “These retreats are super popular, and they do fill up,” says Melissa.

There is something special about the practice of yoga that sets it apart from other fitness offerings, and why so many people often stick with the practice for decades. For Melissa, it is the sense of calm that is so often needed in today’s society. “Yoga creates space. You can step on the mat and take time for yourself that is separate from the day-to-day and just be with your body and connect with your heart and mind,” reflects Melissa. “It is nice to take a pause and just let it be.” Hola Yoga hopes to inspire students to be well in both mind and body while cultivating the sense of community that is necessary for our well-being.

Hotel Excelsior

Hotel Excelsior
Hotel Excelsior could be the perfect option if you’re looking for a more traditional space for your romantic getaway. This independent boutique hotel overlooks the historic Water Street in Excelsior and offers a plethora of room options.
Fully renovated in 2020, the Hotel Excelsior is a unique space for anyone wanting the amenities of a hotel with the feeling of still being at home.
The space offers five different room options: St. Albans Bay Suite, Smithtown Bay Suite, Maxwell Bay Suite, Wayzata Bay Suite, and the Banker’s Suite. The Banker’s Suite is the only room located at Hotel Excelsior’s sister building on 2nd Street.
Each room is individually decorated and features a full kitchen, a bathroom with in-floor heat, instant hot water, a curbless shower, a 55-inch TV, cable service, and Wi-Fi.
While all the suites come with a king-sized bed and sofa bed, the Maxwell Bay and Wayzata Bay feature an enclosed bedroom
separate from the rest of the living space. And the Banker’s Suite is the only two-bedroom, three-bathroom suite at the hotel.
The natural light, brick walls, and open floor plan really set Hotel Excelsior apart from other boutique hotels in the area. Additionally, each suite has private heating and cooling systems and undergoes extensive cleaning between each guest’s stay.
Another unique feature of the Hotel Excelsior is the state-ofthe-art digital door code locking systems. Prior to arrival at the hotel, you’ll receive a unique room code that allows access to a specific suite.
The privacy, luxury amenities, and comfortable atmosphere, all within walking distance of Excelsior’s shops and restaurants, should put Hotel Excelsior at the top of your list for a romantic getaway.

The Beehive
Are you in need of a romantic getaway in a place that feels like a home away from home? The Beehive in Excelsior may be the perfect spot for you.
This charming and historic home, built in 1857, was recently renovated into an Airbnb and has already seen immense success, with guests regularly booking weekend to month-long stays in the Apiary unit.
“I just love my guests, and I put so much of myself into trying to think about how someone wants to live in a space and make sure they feel welcome and comfortable,” says Sheila Holleran, owner of The Beehive.
With a Boho, mid-century vibe, the Apiary accommodates up to four people in a spacious one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with a fully-equipped kitchen, dining room, private outdoor patio, and fire pit.
The Apiary resides in what is known to be Excelsior’s first two-story structure, and that history creates a calm, romantic
atmosphere with original woodwork flooring and exposed stone brick, all of which look lovely by candlelight.
“It just has a romantic vibe to it. I mean, it has a beautiful kingsize bedroom and romantic dining area with exposed original stone from the 1800s on the wall, and it has a beautiful view out to the garden and the fire pit area,” Sheila says.
Not to mention, it’s just a short walk to Lake Minnetonka and Excelsior’s downtown, where you can peruse charming local shops and restaurants.
And if Boho isn’t your vibe, Sheila is preparing to open another unit on the second floor of The Beehive in March. That unit will have two bedrooms and feature a vintage, 70s vibe.
If you’re ready to book that romantic home-away-from-home getaway, you can explore more of The Beehive at @thebeehivemn on Instagram or book on Airbnb

The Guest House
Finding a private and cozy spot to host Valentine’s Day events, wedding parties, or family reunions used to be challenging … until now. The Guest House in Excelsior is a beautiful vacation rental perfectly suited for gathering friends and family.
Built in 1858, The Guest House was at one time a bed & breakfast before being bought by Kelly Olsen and eight other women who renovated and converted the space into a rental property consisting of The Guest House and The Carriage House.
“We did our transformation of the space right after COVID, and there was a real sense that people haven’t seen their loved ones in a long time, so the transition to a short-term vacation rental was ideal at the time,” Kelly says.
The Guest House is a seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom space that can comfortably accommodate up to 17 people. The smaller of the
two rentals, The Carriage House, accommodates up to 6 people with three bedrooms, one bathroom, a full kitchen, and two living rooms.
The property also features a charming fire pit, beautiful courtyard, and on-site parking, making the space feel exclusive while still being just a short walk to the romantic Excelsior downtown.
The space has been host to Valentine’s Day (or Galentine’s Day) gatherings, bachelorette and bridal parties, weddings, family reunions, and much more.
So why is The Guest House such a special place?
“People just don’t realize how important it is to get together and really create memories with the people they love, and those are the things that you really think about later,” Kelly shares. “So this project has been an attempt to get people to come together and spend time with the people they love.”

Love Stories Start at Jett Beauty
HOW AMY KELLY AND HER TEAM ARE MAKING BRIDES LOOK AND FEEL RADIANT ON THEIR BIG DAY
ARTICLE BY HANNAH HARMS

When it comes to pampering for your wedding day, you deserve to feel glamorous, confident, and cared for.
Jett Beauty has been redefining bridal beauty since 2007, becoming Minnesota’s original eyelash bar. With the legacy of offering ‘Hollywood glamour on location,’ the studio provides an unparalleled array of services to make brides and bridesmaids look and feel their best.
When Jett Beauty opened its doors 17 years ago, it offered eyelash extensions and airbrush makeup services for bridal parties. Since then, the salon has expanded to two locations: the Edina location on 50th and France and the Excelsior location on Water Street in the historic Mill Building.
The service menu has also expanded to include curated facials, body waxing, lash lifts, brow shaping and laminations, permanent makeup, and cosmetic injectables from board-certified dermatologists.
“We are renowned for our award-winning customized lash extension services,” says owner Amy Kelly. “We offer a wide range of lengths, curl types, adhesives for sensitive clients, and thicknesses to create a dense or light and natural appearance.”
When it comes to brides on their special day, Jett Beauty’s approach is both comprehensive and customizable. For many brides, preparation starts months before their wedding day with a pre-wedding consultation.
During the consultations, Advanced Practice Aestheticians will analyze your skin type and create a personalized skincare routine that addresses specific skin concerns such as hydration, exfoliation, acne, and brightening leading up to your wedding. This might include a Deluxe Glo2Facial — a treatment famously favored by Gwyneth Paltrow that exfoliates with oxygen bubbles and uses light ultrasound to smooth the skin. This instantly reduces redness and puffiness, along with a deep infusion of active ingredients, leaving the skin looking flawless.
Another popular service you can receive for your big day is airbrush makeup services. Known for its light, buildable coverage and long-lasting finish, airbrush makeup is custom blended for each bride to ensure a perfect match.
“We work closely with each individual to understand their preferences,” says Amy. “Our goal is to enhance their natural beauty so they look and feel like the best version of themselves.”
Wedding planning can bring many stresses, from booking a venue to decorating and finding the perfect dress and makeup to match the occasion. Jett Beauty helps provide peace of mind by offering flexible scheduling, including extended hours and weekend availability, to accommodate busy schedules. And to ensure you’re happy with your makeup, they also offer trial appointments. This allows you to try out different looks before the big day and treat yourself to a fun activity before your engagement photos, bridal shower, or bachelorette party. It’s a great way to ensure you’re completely happy with your look while enjoying a pampering session.
What sets Jett Beauty apart is its commitment to creating a high-end, serene environment. With luxurious decor, calming music, and premium amenities, every element is designed to make you feel your best.
“Our team is highly trained, experienced, and knowledgeable about lashes, brows, skincare, and makeup techniques,” says Amy.
Jett Beauty partners with Associated Skin Care Specialists, a group of board-certified dermatologists available for monthly cosmetic injections at their studios. These dermatologists offer advanced skincare services like laser treatments.
If you’re currently planning your bridal glam, it’s crucial to seek out a reputable and experienced team that prioritizes your comfort and satisfaction. When searching for a salon, you should begin by researching and reading reviews from previous brides that emphasize the quality of services.
“It’s important to choose someone who’s knowledgeable about the unique needs and stressors that accompany wedding preparations,” shares Amy.
Whether you’re just looking for makeup services or the whole package with treatments and facials, Jett Beauty has it all. To learn more about what the salon offers or to book a service, head to https://jettbeauty.com/

A NOVEL Approach

ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE
CREAM & AMBER
Co-owners Kacey Hruby Wyttenhove and Katie Terhune opened the doors to Cream & Amber in Hopkins six years ago, welcoming the community into a place where you can have lunch, get coffee, sip on a beer, and, of course, read the latest new book release or shop for used books.
“The idea started as a selfish desire to have a place to go that had a cozy bookstore environment but also served beer,” says Katie. “The space itself is intimate, with limited seating, but we find folks come back again and again for the welcoming vibe and warm and friendly service.”
They also host countless events. Between board game night, book club, after-hour shopping events, used book buying, storytime, and author events, there’s always something to spark your curiosity.
“Indie bookstores have always opened their doors for conversations about books, and I think that plays a large role in developing a love of reading,” reflects Katie. “One unexpected rewarding part of owning and working at Cream & Amber is when families come back year after year, and we get to watch their kids grow and get excited to pick out books. It’s so wonderful to be a part of people’s day-to-day lives and experience the joy of books with their kids.” https://creamandamber.com/

“INDIE BOOKSTORES HAVE always opened THEIR DOORS FOR conversations ABOUT BOOKS, AND I THINK THAT PLAYS A large role IN DEVELOPING A love of reading . WE GET TO WATCH their kids grow AND GET EXCITED TO pick out books .”
CHAPTER ONE
Opening a bookstore was always a dream for Angie Ross, and after 15 years as an elementary school teacher, she took the leap, opening Chapter One in Victoria.
“We wanted to build a community where everyone feels welcome,” shares Angie. “And because my heart will always be with teaching little ones, we have summer book clubs for elementary and middle schoolers, story times, and a fun Picture Book and Project class for pre-schoolers. We wanted a place where kids come in excited to read.”
There’s plenty of events for the adults, too. “We have a monthly adult book club that’s been amazing and keeps growing to around 40 people now. We also have great local author events,” says Angie. And local authors get the spotlight at
Chapter One with a dedicated table for Minnesota authors, making it easy to pick up a fun new read while supporting the incredible voices in our own community.
“The connection to the community has been so rewarding. I love that people feel known and seen and that I can call them by their name,” shares Angie. “I’ve met so many amazing people.”
If you haven’t been to Chapter One, it’s the perfect time to visit. February is “I Love to Read Month,” where Angie hands out reading bingo cards for kids. If they complete the bingo, they can bring it back for prizes. For Valentine’s, Angie also hosts “Blind Date with a Book.” “People look forward to this one every year. We cover a bunch of books and leave only a few clues about them, making it a fun way to discover a new read.” https://chapteronemn.com/

THE THINKING SPOT
The Thinking Spot in Wayzata fills a unique niche in the community, putting science-based books front and center. “There wasn’t a bookstore quite like it in the area,” says owner Rima Parikh. As a former software engineer, science, technology, astronomy, nature, chemistry, math, and natural history were all the kinds of books Rima loves — and ones you’ll find on the shelves for both kids and adults.
“We do carry fiction genres — literary, historical, mysteries, thrillers, sci-fi and even some fantasy, but I wanted to focus on science to give kids and adults more exposure to those topics. It’s been the best,” says Rima. “One girl came in and picked up a book on an astronaut, and then a few weeks later, she returned and said she now wants to be an astronaut.”
The Thinking Spot wasn’t just to be a store. “I wanted to create a ‘third place’ for people to come hang out and feel part of a community,” says Rima. Rima has undoubtedly created a welcoming space with book clubs, monthly storytime, author events, workshops with robotics and AI, and Science Sundays, where kids read a book and then do a science experiment based on the story.
One not-to-miss event this month is Evening in a Bookstore. “It’s such a fun night. We play bookish games, have desserts and drinks, and everyone goes home with a book.” https://www.thethinkingspot.us/
EXCELSIOR BAY BOOKS
Excelsior Bay Books has nurtured the community’s love of reading since 1996. In 2020, Ann Woodbeck took the helm, deciding their bookmark was: Friendly. Local. Books. “That’s what we strive to be,” says Ann. “A welcoming place. The center of our store has a loveseat, some chairs, a coffee table, and coloring mats for kids. We want to be a place where people like to be.”
Ann and her team especially love connecting with young readers and introducing them to the magic of reading. “We want to inspire kids to read in a positive way, indulge what they’re interested in, and help them understand how to experience a story,” shares Ann.
Kids enjoy countless events at Excelsior Bay Books, including a bookmark contest in conjunction with the Art on the Lake event. Kids get a blank bookmark to create their own art on. Then, Ann prints a couple hundred copies of the bookmarks with the kids’ art and names to be sold in the bookstore. Who’s Hiding is another fun event in July where Ann picks a picture book and a finger puppet from the story and then hides the puppet in a dozen or so shops around town that the kids and parents get to find.
“We love the relationships we build with readers of all ages and helping to facilitate that connection with people and books,” says Ann.
And each February, you can enter a drawing for a first-row seat to watch the Klondike Dog Derby from Excelsior Bay Book’s front window! https://excelsiorbaybooks.net/
YOUR ROMANCE RECOMMENDATIONS!
In honor of the month that’s all about love, we asked the experts and some of our partners for their favorite romance reads. Who knows? You may just have a love affair with one of these love stories!
“One of my favorites is author Abby Jimenez. She’s a Minnesota author. Her books are super witty with depth to them, and they always have a happy ending.” — Angie Ross, owner of Chapter One.
“Co-owner Kacey is an avid romance reader. Some of her favorites are Puck and Prejudice, Roland Rogers Isn’t Dead Yet, The Pairing, and Done and Dusted.” — Katie Terhune, co-owner of Cream & Amber.
“The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. It’s a time travel book, but it has romance, adventure, and mystery. It’s a funny and gorgeous book — everybody should read it!” — Rima Parikh, owner of The Thinking Spot.
“Authors Emily Henry, Jenny Colgan, and Tessa Bailey are all great reads.” — Ann Woodbeck, owner of Excelsior Bay Books.
“My favorite romance novel is Gone With the Wind and has been since I was five years old! The complexity and personalities of the main characters are unrivaled. I think the story provides an objective view of love and relationships that we all can learn from — the simple act of being vulnerable and honest goes a long way and can fix (and avoid!) most problems.” — Selina Martire, insurance agent at State Farm.
“WE WANT TO inspire kids TO READ IN A positive way, INDULGE WHAT THEY’RE INTERESTED IN, AND help them UNDERSTAND HOW TO EXPERIENCE a story.”
“The Notebook. It’s beautiful and flawed and demonstrates true love. A love and connection beyond measure. More than an infatuation, real passion - not without obstacles, mistakes, heartache, and pain. Imagine how blessed to have that person who accepts our gifts and our imperfections and chooses to love us and build a life. A person who continues to see the beauty, even through obstacles, anger, sadness, and grief. That is a real love story.” — Sandy Mahoney, Project Development at Highmark Builders.
“Outlander. A timeless romance does not accurately describe these books because it is filled with time! A love that travels and is tested by time and distance with no lack of adventure and passion. I adore Jamie and Claire!” — Jillian Sievers, customer service representative at Westonka Animal Hospital.
“Chick Magnet. The male character in it is a veterinarian and the woman in it is a chicken keeper influencer. It’s a fun story, especially with animals in it.” — Liz, customer service representative at Westonka Animal Hospital.

BRIDGEWATER’S BEST INVESTMENT

ARTICLE BY LAUREN BEAUBAIRE

It was an unforgettable evening of connection and gratitude as Bridgewater Bank teamed up with Artful Living Magazine to host Bridgewater’s 3rd annual Gratitude Gathering. The event, complete with local, women-owned vendors, celebrated women business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders in the Twin Cities, gathered everyone together for a night to inspire, connect, support one another, and give back.

How Bridgewater Bank’s people-first culture drives real community change
Bridgewater Bank’s 3rd annual Gratitude Gathering

“From the very beginning, we’ve been intentional about cultivating our unconventional, people-first culture at Bridgewater Bank.”
“Pausing to focus on gratitude, connection, and giving back is more important than ever in seasons where the hustle and bustle never seems to stop,” shares Mary Jayne Crocker, Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer at Bridgewater Bank. “The highlight of the night was coming together to assemble self-care kits for Dress for Success Twin Cities. It was a powerful reminder of the impact we can create through community and collaboration.”
At the event, 120 care packages were packed up for Dress for Success, an organization that helps unemployed and underemployed women achieve economic independence. Add to that, 367 pounds of gently used clothing were also donated to the organization during the evening.
Providing opportunities for connection is one of the things Bridgewater does best. The bank was built with the vision to challenge the status quo, providing an unconventional banking experience
and opportunities for employees and clients alike to grow and thrive. And those values are still ever present, continuing to drive and inspire the team at Bridgewater every day.
“From the very beginning, we’ve been intentional about cultivating our unconventional, people-first culture at Bridgewater Bank,” says Mary Jayne. “Giving back as a team not only aligns with our culture – it strengthens it.”
Bridgewater makes giving back a priority, even creating their Volunteer Time Off program, which provides employees with 16 hours of paid time off per year for volunteerism related to housing and education initiatives, a passion-point for Bridgewater. “Giving back is not only important – it’s very rewarding. I’ve experienced that personally, and we’ve seen that in our team as well,” reflects Mary Jayne. “It’s inspiring to see our team members’ passion for the community and the differences many of them are making throughout the Twin Cities.” CONTINUED >

The Gratitude Gathering event is just a taste of the countless ways the team at Bridgewater gives back to the community. HOW MOLLY AMBROSIA IS BRINGING CARE TO VETERANS AND MILITARY MEMBERS THROUGH SEMPER FI FLO

A MOM ON A MISSION
Military members receiving care packages from Semper Fi Flo
If you’ve ever seen an episode of N.C.I.S., you’ve no doubt heard the expression “Semper Fi,” which is short for Semper Fidelis, the motto of every United States Marine. The translation of this Latin expression is an eternal and collective commitment to the success of our battles, the progress of our Nation, and the steadfast loyalty to the fellow Marines we fight alongside.
Allow me to introduce you to a memorable Marine mom named Molly Ambrosia, who is one of approximately 600 Marine Moms in Minnesota. In 2015, Molly’s son Nick enlisted in the Marine Corps. Soon, Molly began to package and send “care kits” to Nick. One day, a fellow Marine mom invited Molly to attend a once-amonth get-together for Marine moms, which she attended.
of communities. Often the VSO’s conversation would start with, “Hello, is there any way you can offer relief to a family in our community that has lost their home to a fire?” Sometimes, it was simply a family that needed food and clothing for their children. Often, it was a family struggling to pay for heating their home, or worse, to help them with a house payment to keep the eviction notice at bay.
SHE HAS SHIPPED OVER 6,000 PACKAGES OVERSEAS, AND YET THIS EVER-READY BUNNY FORGES ON!
About 45-65 moms were at this meeting, each of them willing to work in concert with one another stuffing care kits to send overseas. Molly could appreciate the concept but knew she worked better alone, so she set out to do just that. She named her company Semper Fi Flo and began to ask for donations. One of her first donations came from local elementary schools. Imagine her surprise when she received 800 pounds of candy! After that, Molly convinced the “My Pillow” company to donate 50 travel pillows for her boxes. In the spring of 2017, My Pillow donated another 336 travel pillows and even took care of boxing up and shipping charges to the tune of $8,000.
Once “just a mom,” Molly needed to think bigger. She could no longer continue to purchase most of the items herself, so she turned to Facebook. Word quickly got out, and soon, she hit another home run! Molly has maintained her service to the Marines and expanded her services to include the Army, Navy, and Air Force! Somedays, she drives to five locations a day throughout the metro, filling up her vehicle with items to send overseas.
As more people learned about Molly’s incomparable talent in securing items for hundreds of veterans, she began to get calls from veteran service officers in a variety
Today, Molly, her husband, Tim, and her nine board of directors work with 128 military families in our immediate area. She has shipped over 6,000 packages overseas, and yet this ever-ready bunny forges on! “My son once asked me, now that I am out of the Marines, why do you continue to do this? I just said because it’s my mission,” shares Molly.
I enjoyed learning about “Mission Night Owl.” Molly tells me, “During the Christmas season, we have so many local veteran families who rely on us to help provide their families with a good Christmas. So, we make deliveries during the night when we know that mom, dad, and the “littles” are asleep. Like most successful missions, we focus on our target, which is their front door. We make the drop, and then we disappear without ever being caught,” says Molly. If you would like to donate to Molly’s ongoing mission, go to Facebook and type Semperfiflo into the search bar. Susan Stiles CFP, CHFC, AIF, CPFA, MBA Founder / CEO Stiles Financial Services, Inc.
Susan: My fiancée wants to combine financials.
Am I being a bad partner if I don’t say yes?
- Mark
Susan:
Mark, it’s okay to say yes to marriage and partnership, but say no to fully combining financials. Couples assets are rarely 50-50, and that balance fluctuates continually over time. The key to financial success in a marriage is communication, not simple math. Understand the relationship each of you have with money, take inventory of your current assets, discuss your future plans, then find an approach that works – and keep communicating as you grow. A financial advisor can help you sort through the options to keep your marriage and your finances harmonious.
