become longer and brighter. What a nice relief after what felt like a long winter, for South Carolina standards. In this month's issue, we are featuring the new look of di Vino Rosso, and if you love Italian fare, you're going to want to make a reservation immediately. I mean, just look at that delicious-looking dish on the cover! We sat down with Partner Brad Spehl to talk about the new location and updated menu. We are also congratulating two very prominent men who have made a real difference to South Carolina during their careers. You'll love these profiles. This issue also has some fun pieces! Want to make your own face and body scrubs? Want to try some new local beers? How about suggestions for where to have dinner tonight? You'll find your answers in these pages. Our friends at Carolina Nutrition also help us break down the difference between the DASH diet and the Mediterranean Diet... hint - they are both wonderfully healthy eating plans.

Hi. My name is Mike. I have had low back pain for the past three years. I thought some simple exercises and medication would help alleviate the pain. It just continued to get worse not better and I started shutting down in my activities. I was unable to play golf, work in the yard, or even help with household chores. I was even unable to bend at the waist. My daughter had come to Bigbie Chiropractic suffering from severe arm pain and other issues. After a few months she was pain free. She encouraged me to come and I am glad I did. I consider myself completely healed. I have been playing golf for the past three weeks and I have full range of motion where I did not two months ago. I highly recommend Dr. Bigbie and his facility if you are looking for healing instead of band aids.

Hi. My name is Diana. I have suffered for several years with foot neuropathy as well as back pain, neck pain, and dizziness. I had trouble standing or walking long distances. It made it difficult to go to my grandkids football games or school functions. I have tried multiple remedies to include orthopedics and medications. Nothing worked for me. While reading a magazine, I came across an ad for Dr. Bigbie’s neuropathy program. I made an appointment, and it was the best decision of my life. I have been on the neuropathy program for twelve weeks and I am now able to stand and walk for long periods. I have also lost twenty pounds and my back pain is not waking me up at night anymore. I have most of my feeling back in my feet and feel I am eighty-five percent improved. I am ecstatic and highly recommend this program. A special thank you to Dr. Bigbie and his staff.

Hi. My name is Judy. I came to Dr. Bigbie’s office because I had read about laser treatments in the newspaper. Our dog had success when he was treated with laser so I thought this would be a good idea perhaps for me. I came with severe back and knee pain resulting from a fall. What has happened has been truly miraculous for me. My back pain is almost invisible, and my knee pain is gone completely. I would recommend Dr. Bigbie and his staff to anyone that’s interested in getting out of pain.

Throughout his career, Dr. Harmon has served as Lexington Medical Center Chief of Staff, a member of the hospital’s board of directors, a physician at Lexington Surgery, and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. As a young child in Lexington in the early 1950s, Charles Harmon, known as “Will,” developed a fascination with tools and mechanics. “I liked to fix things,” he said. “I liked doing things with my hands.” He could wire a lamp, hook up a telephone,

“I have no intention to retire. I like what I do, and I like how I help people.”

LITIGATION, BUT FOR LEGENDARY ATTORNEY BILLY WALKER HIMSELF, IT’S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE. Walker actually started his career teaching at an all-black school in rural South Carolina, where the stark differences in quality and opportunity in education were shocking. “My mother got me a job, and none of the parents could read and the children wore the same clothes every day. They were anxious to read, but they didn’t learn it,” Walker said. “And it was an eye-opening

experience for me. It changed my life in terms of understanding the handicaps people who are different from me have to experience. I went to a public school, the difference in the quality of education was stark and disturbing. I said I could help these people more as a lawyer than I can as a teacher.” After earning his law degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, Walker practiced law for many years before finding his niche in an area of litigation that was almost unheard of. In the 1980s, South Carolina experienced a rash of catastrophic burn injuries due to faulty gas cans, and Walker knew he could help. “It was an epidemic and people had horrific burns. I met the founder of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, and that was a game-changer for me” Walker took the case of a young man who suffered from burns across 80 percent of his body from a go-kart accident. Because the gas tank was placed over the exhaust manifold, the gasoline ignited and injured the boy severely. “The kid got compensated for his horrific burns, and he’s now doing well in life and overcame his injuries to the extent he could. I went back to Dr Still and told him about the case and that he also got paid.” Dr. Still’s burn center treated any person, regardless of pay, for their injuries, so compensation was desperately needed. The two men began working together to help burn victims who suffered from others’ negligence. Billy Walker

LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED)

“Dr. Still advocated for this, and I would help him help the patient. We would find the money to pay Dr. Still’s work, and that’s how I got into burning cases and I’ve done them all over the country,” said Walker. “The problem was you had great doctors doing the burn work, but they weren’t getting paid very much. The doctors realized that there was a place in the world for somebody to help those clients get paid, and that’s what I do. ” Today, Walker Law continues to help people who have catastrophic injuries, something that Walker feels passionately about. “If somebody loses a limb or somebody gets burned, I do serious injury. I don’t do fender benders. I’ll take a case to help somebody who needs help,” he said. Walker continues to be a legendary courtroom attorney in South Carolina, but his work in advancing advocacy for burn victims has a lasting impact. Walker was among the leading attorneys to represent burn victims, helping to shape litigation in burn cases today.

“I have no intention to retire. I like what I do, and I like how I help people,” said Walker. For more information, call Walker Law LLC at (803) 359-6194 or visit walkerlaw.org.

Executive Chef Nick Rodriquez, Brad Spehl, Partner Mike Deevey, and coordinator Quinn Huber.

WHEN THE POPULAR RISTORANTE DIVINO CLOSED TEMPORARILY LAST YEAR, IT REOPENED WITH A NEW LOCATION AND A NEW NAME. Di Vino Rosso opened next door to its previous location at 803 Gervais Street in Columbia, and the well-loved Italian eatery also gained a new name — di Vino Rosso, owner Brad Spehl said. Spehl and executive chef Mike Deevey restored part of the historic Dupre Building at 807 Gervais Street for the restaurant that has been in business for more than 20 years. “This was a major rebranding. I wanted to create an atmosphere where the feel took you to another place. The space was a Ford dealership showroom in 1919,” said Spehl. “It has the original hand-laid marble floors, the original metal decorative ceiling, exposed beams, exposed electrical, and a lot of the original glass and windows. Keeping with that era and feel we went with exposed Edison bulbs, 1920s style fixtures, and furniture. On the seating, I wanted to do oversized comfortable chairs so you would be able to relax, have a great meal and enjoy wine while listing to our baby grand piano. We changed the menu slightly to incorporate some more traditional Italian dishes with a different style and presentation.” CONTINUED >

HOT SPOT (CONTINUED) Born and raised in Irmo, C. Bradley Spehl was an entrepreneur from a very young age. He started working at the age of 15 in several restaurants in Columbia where he gravitated to management and working with the aspects of owning his own fine-dining restaurant. After earning multiple licenses and certifications in business and accounting in 199, Brad dipped into the financial and insurance industry, and in 2014, he created his own financial company, Steeplechase Financial. The real magic behind Di Vino Rosso is the close friendship between Brad and Executive Chef Mike Deevey, who have been friends since 2005. Loving to cook himself and enjoying countless evenings discussing wines and food techniques, Brad had the opportunity to be partner with Chef Deevey on rebranding Ristorante Divino to Di Vino Rosso. Focusing on fine Italian food while bosting one of the largest wine collections in Columbia, the two brought Di Vino Rosso back to life with new branding and a new feel. “One of the biggest changes to our menu is our wine program. We wanted to have a large range of wine for every taste and budget. We increased the selection to over 200 different bottles, making Di Vino Rosso the largest selection in Columbia,” Spehl said. “Another small but important step we take is that we decant every bottle or red wine. We are the only restaurant to do this extra step which allows the wine to breathe and mature to its proper flavor profile.” 4, The must-try dishes include the beef carpaccio and the agnolotti, a fresh pasta ravioli stuffed with sweet potato and mascarpone cheese topped with powdered brown butter. “Our Bruschetta is made fresh daily, the gnocchi is also a must-have with the wild boar Bolognese finished with gorgonzola cheese,” he said. “We kept the pappardelle which has been a favorite for over a decade, and of course the rack of lamb which too has been a staple. One of the unique things is that our pasta chef creates new dishes daily. With specialty salads and fish specials every day, you always have a lot to choose from.” For information and reservations, visit divinorossosc.com.

Mediterranean Diet Vs. DASH Explained! ARTICLE EDNA COX RICE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

THE DASH (DIETARY APPROACHES TO STOP HYPERTENSION) DIET AND THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET ARE EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING AND MANAGING CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE. They have consistently ranked as #1 and #2 “Best Diet Overall” by the US News and World Health Report, DASH EXPLAINED The DASH diet, while rich in several nutrients known for its ability to regulate blood pressure. These include potassium, magnesium, and calcium. This diet is lower in sodium and saturated fat than the Standard American Diet – abbreviated SAD which is sad!. Many unpleasant side effects are associated with uncontrolled hypertension or high blood pressure. The DASH Diet focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein. Furthermore, sugar and salt are use sparingly. A delicious DASH dinner is chicken breast served with roasted broccoli, cauliflower or carrots, baked sweet potato, and fruit with fat-free yogurt for dessert. Likewise, limit salt while cooking and use herbs, spices, or lemon juice. Avoid salting your food at the dinner table.

Grilled, lean meats and lots of fresh vegetables and fruits make up the heart of both plans.

CAROLINA NUTRITION EXPLAINS HOW EACH EATING PLAN WORKS

Grilled, lean meats and lots of fresh vegetables and fruits make up the heart of both plans.

MEDITERRANEAN EXPLAINED The Mediterranean diet protects against cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. Foods that are traditionally eaten in countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fish, olive oil, and moderate consumption of red wine. Why red wine? Namely, red wine contains resveratrol – an antioxidant thought to prevent damage to blood vessels, lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, and prevent blood clots. Both eating patterns encourage fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They include whole grains with heart-healthy oils and fiber, reduced saturated fat, and increased unsaturated fat intake – all components of a nutritious diet. The only minute differences are that the Mediterranean diet promotes more fish and less dairy than the DASH diet. Rest assured, both diets are certified beneficial!
