Lifestyle Letter

Happy 5th anniversary to us!

A

nniversaries tend to sneak up on me. At the Harrison house, we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries in the evening, when everyone is home from work and school, giving me one more day to go out and get a gift and a card. As organized as I’d like to think I am, I was never going to be that wife or mother who had gifts wrapped and waiting next to the boxes of cereal at the breakfast table. And so it would seem, the tradition continues. We have an anniversary to celebrate around here, and par for the course, this one snuck up on me. Our first issue of Lee’s Summit Lifestyle announced that Smallcakes had come to town and featured a tempting photo of some frosting-topped treats. We heard from so many of our readers over the next few months. It seems you were most excited to have this community-focused magazine arriving in your mailboxes each month. And it was FREE! Sixty issues later we’ve brought hundreds of stories about our neighbors into your homes. We’ve made you laugh and on occasion we’ve brought tears to your eyes. We’ve introduced you to businesses and venues you might have otherwise missed and we’ve loved every single page of doing what we do. And according to the notes you’ve sent our way, we’ve inspired you to travel, to adopt a shelter pet, and to deep clean the junk drawers. We told you about the perfect location to host your parents 50th anniversary party, and it would seem that one of my notes inspired a local daughter to opt for the more formal wedding her parents were trying to gently encourage. We are truly honored that you choose to spend a little time with us each month and we’ll continue to do exactly what we’ve been doing. It goes without saying that we couldn’t do any of it without the businesses that put their trust in partnering with us, so please, when you visit one of our advertisers or call for that free estimate, let them know you read about them in Lee’s Summit Lifestyle. Stay well neighbors, and I’ll see you around town!

Having More Retirement Accounts Is Not the Same As Having More Money When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees. Bringing your accounts to Edward Jones could help solve all that. Plus, one statement can make it easier to see if you’re moving toward your goals. *Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

To learn why consolidating your retirement accounts to Edward Jones makes sense, call your local financial advisor today.

LSWHS EARNS SIGNIFICANT RECOGNITION FROM NATIONAL SPEECH AND DEBATE ASSOCIATION The Lee’s Summit West High School speech and debate program was recently ranked among the top 1 percent of schools nationwide by the National Speech and Debate Association. Through the national honor society, students earn points and degrees based on competitive and service-related activities. The LSWHS chapter earned more than 400 degrees and was presented with the association’s prestigious Societé de 400. reams really do come true. Culinary dreams included—the kind you eat and the kind you make. Two of my favorite things in Lee’s Summit happen to be made by the same person at the same place: Sara O’Bryan at Bean Counter Cafe. When you bite into her utterly sublime creations, you are literally eating a dream come true, and I think this is truly part of what makes them so incredible. She dreamed of opening her own café since 1995 when she went through the Kauffman Foundation’s Fast Track program for small business entrepreneurs. Her passion for cooking is one of her key ingredients. She mixes in her experience as plant manager for The Roasterie and general manager at Atlanta Bread Company, as well as her own homegrown, organic herbs and produce when possible.

THE FLORENTINE FRITTATA

“Why notta frittata? We think ya oughtta.” -- Toni Bruce, Bean Counter employee The Story: Ever since it opened, I’ve enjoyed meeting friends at Sara’s for breakfast, brunch and lunch and this is always my order, served with a side of grapes. It’s also my first-choice, go-to item to serve for special occasions, guaranteed to be devoured with awe. I’ve served it for birthday celebrations, holidays, small group gatherings, and everyone always raves about it. The Taste Sensation: When we were at Bean Counter to shoot these pictures for you, I got some help in describing why this is so special from another frequent customer. Josh Rowland is vice chairman of Lead Bank, where Bean Counter is located, and says he’s eaten the frittata about eleventy billion times. “It’s definitely my favorite breakfast item,” he told me. But why? How do you describe what makes this so delicious you would eat it eleventy billion times? “The consistency is good, it has a layered feeling to it, and it’s satisfying to eat. It has good fork feel, good mouth feel.” Bingo. I would also add it is substantial but not heavy, has great textures, is fresh, flavorful and creamy. Apparently the secret is now out, as Sara told me she recently served this at the Lee’s Summit Chamber Holiday Gala at Longview Mansion. The Ingredients: Ham, fresh spinach, provolone, Parmesan, mozzarella, angel hair pasta layered and topped with a rich egg custard (this is the secret ingredient she’ll only tell you for the right six-figure amount). Sara will make a vegetarian version upon request. The Price: 1 slice at the café - $7.95 Half Pan (Take and Bake) serves 8 to 16 - $35 Full Pan serves 16 to 32 - $70

The Story: A few years ago my friend Becky introduced me to chocolate croissants when she served them at a brunch. It was an instant love affair. Her standards are very high, and since then I’ve been on a quest to find Parisian-quality equivalents (not the frozen kind at Starbucks or Costco). You can drive to some hoity toity French bakeries in KC and spend nearly $5 for one, but I recently discovered that Sara has been making them under my nose right here at home, and Becky agrees they are spectacular. (Think awesome Valentine's Day treat...) The Taste Sensation: Sara’s croissants are light, fluffy, flaky pillows of divine perfection. The Ingredients: She wraps 60 percent bittersweet cacao (dark) chocolate in her homemade croissant dough, drizzles them with more dark chocolate and dusts them with powdered sugar. The Price: Just $2 each! (no matter how many you order) You can enjoy either of these onsite in the café--a warm, welcoming, metro environment with a friendly Lee’s Summit feel (and decidedly beautiful, non-metro view)--or order either to share with friends and family. Sara appreciates a 48-hour notice. Editor’s Note: Lee’s Summit is filled with talents and treasures. We love discovering little gems around town, and for this food issue we are delighted to share two we’ve found. What are some of your favorite things right here in town? F

our seasons a year, Summer’s in the air. Serious air. Like 15 feet every two seconds. For Summer Koogler, the sport of trampolining has been the vehicle that has helped this Lee’s Summit student athlete to soar. Maybe it’s her innate ability that sprung up as a 6-year-old gymnast. Maybe it’s her training schedule of three hours after school every night, plus Saturdays. Or maybe it’s that one word that her friends, family, and coach use to describe her -- determined. “Summer is determined and always accomplishes what she sets her mind to,” say her parents Greg and Jacque Koogler. “She always has a smile on her face and a go-for-it attitude.” As a level 10 trampolinist through USA Gymnastics (USAG), Summer is a nationally ranked champion who has tucked and piked herself into earning multiple state and regional medals. At the Junior Olympic Nationals in 2012 and 2014, she finished third and first, respectively, in synchronized trampoline. This year, she added a third place for individual trampoline and second place for synchronized trampoline. She is also a USAG certified coach and judge and a busy senior at Lee’s Summit High School. Summer goes straight from school to the gym (Xtreme Gymnastics and Trampoline) where she coaches recreation classes before her trampoline practice from 6-9 every night. When asked what makes her both ordinary and extraordinary, Summer says that she is an average teenager because she goes to school, does homework, reads, draws, watches Netflix, and has a job. What makes her extraordinary is her dedication to spend another 15-19 hours a week in the gym. “Summer is very determined and persistent,” says her coach Carl Neidholdt. “She has stayed focused and confident through the natural ups and downs of competing. She has handled success with

grace and inspires her teammates. I wish I had 20 more just like her.” Although trampolining is a year-round discipline for Summer, her competition season is now in full swing. Summer attended the Dallas Cup at the end of January and will go to Kalamazoo, Michigan, this month. Her next immediate goal is to become a Junior Elite in competitive trampolining. Each competition in trampolining has a qualifying round and a final round. In the qualification round, athletes perform a compulsory and an optional routine. The compulsory routine is predesigned and must contain a set of skills in a certain order, while the optional routines can contain any 10 recognized skills. The three basic positions are tucked, piked and straight. Summer says that a common misconception about trampolining is that it is overly dangerous: “If you follow the progressions and drills, trampoline is not dangerous. As with most sports, there will be falling and bad days, but those days are necessary to learn.” Another common misconception is that trampolining is not a competitive sport. “Most people are surprised to learn that trampolining is an Olympic sport and has been since the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. But one disappointment I’ve had to deal with is that trampoline is not recognized by colleges as a college sport, so no scholarships are available outside of USAG. I dealt with this by getting academic scholarships. After I graduate, I plan to go to UMKC to study physical therapy.” Summer credits her parents, her twin brother, Kyle, and her older sister, Robin, as major players in her success in the sport. She also gives credit to Coach Neidholdt, and her role model, Desiree Baker, an upper-level trampolinist and mentor. “She was always there for us just like I want to be there for my team now.“ Summer Koogler may be leaps and bounds above the norm, but she has a downto-earth attitude about her sport: “I love trampoline for everything it has taught me, for the friends I have made, and for the sheer joy of flying through the air.”

F

or Jim Leach, it was a battle with bipolar disease. For Aaron Price, it was a devastating car crash that led to being paralyzed. Each man had a very different challenge that lay before him, but each was able to turn to the same place for help: The Whole Person. This incredible local nonprofit aids people with disabilities so they can live independently—all while trying to impart change within the community to expand opportunities for such independent living. The organization reaches out to people with physical and mental disabilities, their spouses and family members, as well as schools, businesses, and local government agencies. Its aim? To connect people like Leach and Price to the support and resources they need, so that they have the choice to stay out of institutions and nursing homes and instead live meaningful, independent lives. For each individual, this means something different. For Leach it was managing his illness with proper medication and regular psychiatric visits. “I credit my ongoing wellness to having found the peer support group sponsored by The Whole Person,” Leach writes. “This group allowed me to accept my illness, demonstrated that I was not alone and gave me the knowledge it is okay to be bipolar. I cannot overstate the value this has been and continues to be for me personally as well as my family, friends, and coworkers.” For Price, there was much to learn about coping with his injury upon his release from the rehabilitation hospital. “I’m constantly running into new obstacles and issues,” he writes. “Thanks to the peer group at The Whole Person, I’m given the information to deal with those obstacles in a constructive, easy manner. The group also keeps me

connected to the spinal cord injury community in the Kansas City area and the activities available to us. The best part about the spinal cord injury peer group at The Whole Person is that it provides me with a safe place to talk about my injury with others who know exactly how I feel. I couldn’t think of a better place to go for answers to my questions about living with my injury, and I’m looking forward to attending many more meetings in the future.” This one-of-a-kind agency improved the lives of more than 2,000 individuals in 2015, in a wide range of ways. Whether it’s providing up-to-date information on services and support regarding adaptive equipment, transportation, accessible housing, offering one-on-one training to help adults with disabilities develop skills needed to live independently, peer mentoring, or advocacy on the local, state and federal level, The Whole Person takes a systematic approach to tack-

ling this very real need. Another focus for this organization? It’s helped approximately 1,200 people avoid institutionalization by making them aware of real living options within the community. Yet this is only part of the picture. The Whole Person also aids families that have children with disabilities. Be it free sign language instruction or helping high schoolers transition out of school upon graduation, the organization is there every step of the way as its participants progress through life. Funding for this very unique program is garnered through grants, United Way campaigns and individual, foundation and corporate support. Opportunities for volunteering and financial support are always welcome, as The Whole Person seeks to empower not only its participants, but also the greater community as a whole, so that there are equal opportunities for every person. “The Whole Person’s goals are to promote empowerment, independence, self-reliance, and inclusion for people with disabilities,” says Julie DeJean, CEO of The Whole Person. For Leach and Price—and countless others—that goal is met again and again as this unique organization enables those in need, regardless of their disability, to feel whole and independent once again. It’s something many of us take for granted—but something a special few ensure all of us get to enjoy. For more information, visit TheWholePerson.org. February 2016 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

come from a long line of bad cooks. While each generation improves slightly over

the previous, we have a long way to go. Since discovering Heavenly Olive Oils & Vinegars and using them, I've attained "good cook" status with my family. And it happened simply, without any fuss or complicated classes. Just like Julia says. The olive oil industry has gotten some bad press lately. What you find in grocery stores is not the same as what owners

their shop.

They compare those products with hot dogs: “You never know what you’re going to get.” Heavenly’s extra virgin olive oils (EVOO) are ultra premium, meaning higher quality with much higher standards in every detail (trucks are only allowed to be half full when transporting, olives are picked same day they're crushed, supplier tests oils for purity before buying and inspects fields personally, etc.) Their pure balsamics (10 calories per tablespoon) are from Modena, Italy, aged up to 18 years with no added preservatives, sugar or additives. Three types of olive oils fill the pretty stainless steel fustis lining their shelves: natural unflavored, fused and infused. Fused = Flavors are attained by crushing a whole fruit simultaneously with the olives, “fusing” them together. Other stores sell flavored oils created with extract flavorings. Infused = An EVOO produced by adding herbs and spices, the oil taking on the flavor through the infusion process. Cooking with and eating these quality products make you want to eat healthy because it tastes so good. They can show you how to transform even kale from bitter to amazing. You must go in and taste for yourself. They'll guide you through, and make it fun.

-Eat (good) fat: So much misinformation has been written about eating fat. Your body needs fat, but it needs good fats. Good fats, or unsaturated fats, are found in avocados, nuts, olive oil and fatty fish such as salmon. These fats not only help satisfy your hunger and offer many health benefits. “The omega 3 fatty acids found in many fish can help lower cholesterol and, the fats found in nuts can help reduce heart disease,” says McCleary. Though these fats are healthy, they are also high in calories so you still want to limit how much you eat of them, he adds. -Eat carbs. Your body needs carbohydrates for energy. “Not all carbohydrates are equal,” says McCleary. “Breads, crackers and bagels taste good, but they are full of calories and refined sugar. Instead, replace them with whole and

Parting Thoughts

WORDS DENISE SNODELL

I

magine an early evening in the 1970s, somewhere in Provence, France. The late Julia Child is at her vacation home, taking inventory in her kitchen. Fresh, hand-picked

ingredients, ever so abundant in the local markets, are heaped on her counters. Culinary confidence emanates from her heart and mind, straight to her fingertips. Alas, it’s close to dinner time. But Julia looks out the window and gazes at the rolling lavender fields. She sighs. This is not just any sigh, but the curious exhale of a person who, at the moment, has just about had it. It’s that familiar epiphany when one recognizes a food rut has boiled over. Boeuf Bourguignon again! Clearly, I made up the above scenario. But I can only guess this kind of thing hap-

pened to Julia--yes Julia--an icon of the epicurean world. She was, after all, human. For those of us who are lesser kitchen mortals, we accept our home-grown kitchen ruts. We even relish our Tuna Melt Tuesdays, or our endless pasta-thons. These are the dishes we can prepare at home, reflexively, with little brain power. We forgive ourselves, because... life. But now I’m in the throes of a personal food rut I can’t completely excuse: it’s an eating out one. A kind that, perhaps, should never happen. My husband and I discovered a casual “indie” restaurant that suits us like no other. This eatery, in my opinion, matches Julia’s ingredient standards. Every offering is locally sourced, slightly offbeat and just plain delicious. The décor is what I would call industrial-yet-warm. Functional-yet-cool. Seating choices are either cozy or center-stage, but always coveted. It doesn’t matter where we sit, though. We go there for the food. We’d happily perch ourselves on a nearby street curb to indulge. I have dubbed this restaurant The Place. We frequent it way too much. I realize many couples have go-to dining spots, but that’s not really the rut part of the equation. The repetitive ingredient is me: I choose the same menu item every time. Every single time. My eat-and-repeat dish is a fried avocado taco smothered in watercress and other stuff I have yet to identify. The fried aspect might not sound gourmet, but oh man. Generous green chunks of nature’s superfood are coated with a thin layer of breaded heaven, and then gently dunked into simmering liquid gold for just the right amount of time. I will not budge from this selection. Nope. I’ll never try another thing at The Place because one time I did. The veered-off dinner was tasty and great, but it was avocado-less. Not a spec of watercress passed my lips. So much regret to swallow. Never again. Some friends tell me they, too, default to the same menu items at their own favorite dining spots. Like me, they glaze over when food servers recite the chef’s specials or catches of the day. We become laser focused on That One Dish. I don’t know what this eating out inflexibility thing means. Are we creatures of habit? Stubborn? Unadventurous? Then again, if something is delicious and makes you happy, then why not indulge with fixation? As our old friend Julia Child used to say, “Bon appetit!” Hmm. Talk about ruts. She uttered that phrase a lot. Like, all the time. So there. 50
