A Performing Arts Bucket List O

n occasion I like to challenge myself to see more of this great city of ours. I plan field trips and insist that we leave “the bubble” for a dinner out. In honor of our arts themed issue, I create this handy dandy check-off list. Go ahead and cut it out. Use it as a bucket list of sorts...a list that challenges you to check out a few new websites and see what shows are playing here, there and across town. Some of these places are hidden gems, some are Kansas City classics, and some are a little less impressive from the outside. Don’t let that discourage you. The talent is on stage. Apologies in advance for any I inadvertently left off the list. Get out there and enjoy the performing arts in this great city of ours, and I’ll see you around town!

AWARD WINNING SERVICE | CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS OVER 175 YEARD COMBINED EXPEREINCE

“First of all, I feel privileged to have gone through basic combat training and deployments around the world with a true cross section of American men and women – some had graduate degrees and others lacked a high school diploma. I learned to work with, be taught by and in some cases be commanded by all kinds of people. I learned respect for all my fellow citizen soldiers no matter their gender, color, creed, nationality or accent.

Military service also taught me a lot about myself, strengthened my love for this country and gave me a strong affinity for our brotherhood in arms. I rejoined the Army in a reserve status after the Iran hostage crisis because I felt I could not stand idly by while my fellow citizens and soldiers were imprisoned by a foreign power.

BEFORE

After more than 33 years of combined service to our country, I have a great respect for the American system of justice and a compassion for my fellow citizens under duress. And feel that my military knowledge, experience and sense of fairness benefits everyone who comes into my court, particularly veterans in crisis.” NOTE: Judge Tobin is the recipient of the Bronze Star, a Combat Action Badge and a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Badge.

TEACHER SELECTED FOR STUDY TOUR Curtis Cook, international studies teacher at the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District’s Summit Technology Academy, was recently chosen as one of 12 teachers from Missouri who will participate in a 10-day study tour in Japan and Okinawa. “Because of what we do in international studies, I was able to put together an application that really stood out,” Cook says. “There are not many programs like ours in the state, and I think that uniqueness was a major reason I was chosen.” In the past, Cook’s program has offered many opportunities for students to study the Japanese language and culture. In 2014, the program co-hosted a seminar on Japan, partnering with the University of Central Missouri and the Japan-America Society of KC. The study tour is being financed through a grant from the Japan-America Society of St. Louis. Cook will attend a number of background sessions in St. Louis conducted by faculty at the University of St. Louis. CONTINUED >

UNIQUE NEW "STOP" OPENS DOWNTOWN: THE EYE STATION The Eye Station is Lee’s Summit’s newest optical boutique and optometry office. Located in the heart of downtown Lee’s Summit, Drs. Katie and Kyle Weeden are proud to serve the community where they live and love. Over the past 6 months, they renovated the historic Howard building, built in 1880 as a corner drug store, at 3rd and Main Street. Dr. Katie (Hahn) Weeden graduated from Lee’s Summit North in 2001. Husband and wife team, Katie and Kyle are excited to now offer eye care to people of all ages, young infants included. They also treat and manage a variety of eye conditions such as dry eye, allergies, pink eye, diabetes, and glaucoma. They accept most insurance plans. “We offer stylish and unique frame designs alongside personalized service in our eye exams. We have young kids of our own, so it seemed fitting to offer a special kids zone to keep the kids happy while parents try on our fun and colorful sunglasses.” Stop in for your eye exam and say hello, reminiscent of the corner drugstore days. Bechard NABS National Award DISTRICT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HONORED IN ORLANDO ARTICLE CHARLES REDFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY JANA AYERS AND PROVIDED

S

econd-year district athletic director for the Lee’s Summit School District Rich Bechard recently received a prestigious award at the National

Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) in Orlando. The soft-spoken Bechard received the NIAAA’s Award of Merit at the National Athletic Director Conference on Dec. 15. “The Award of Merit is the most prestigious award presented by the NIAAA to an individual who has shown outstanding leadership in interscholastic athletics,” says Bechard. “It is only given in years when the NIAAA Board of Directors feel there is a deserving individual.” This may be just his second year in charge of athletics in the Lee’s Summit School District, but he has had a long career in athletic administration. And he got into the business almost by accident. “While I was coaching at Stockton (Kansas), one day the principal said he needed someone to do some AD work and asked if I would be willing to do it,” says Bechard. “I told him I would. “He then went on to say there would be no pay and you still have to be a full-time teacher, but I still agreed to do it.” That same year he attended to the Kansas State Athletic Director ’s Conference. “I was so impressed that I knew that is what I wanted to do full time,” he says. “I immediately went to work on my master’s in administration so I could become a full time AD.” Bechard has a long and successful career in high school sports administration. He served as a full time AD at Holton, KS for 16 years and then in 2006 he became the district athletic director for the Blue Valley School District. Bechard came to Lee’s Summit in the fall of 2014. 28

“I oversee all our athletic and activities programs at our three high schools and three middle schools,” he says. What is his philosophy of sports administrators? “I believe as an athletic administrator, it is my duty to set an example for the school community to follow,” he says. “I believe the primary purpose of interscholastic athletics and activity programs are to instill the necessary traits in our students for success in later life. They should be character building and educationally based.” Bechard has received numerous awards during his years as a sports administrator. The Grinnell, Kansas native played sports in high school and college. He played football, basketball, baseball and participated in track at the small western Kansas town. He went on to play basketball at Barton County Community College and finished his degree at Fort Hays State. After finishing college, he became a teacher and coach in Kansas. “I was a teacher and coach for 10 years,” he says. “I coached football, basketball and track and field. “I coached for nine years at Stockton, Kansas and one year at Norton, Kansas.” Bechard has some highlights from his career as a sports administrator. “Tne of the highlights of my career was serving on the NIAAA Board of Directors from 2010 to 2013 and in 2012 I served as the President of the NIAAA,” he says. And he comes from a family that has been heavily involved in sports. “Athletics have always been part of my life,” he says. “I grew up in a large family with two sisters and four brothers all competing in athletics in middle and high school. Rich and two brothers became coaches and brother Harold went into sports writing. Brother Don was a success as a volleyball and basketball coach until losing a battle with cancer six years ago while

Gardner-Edgerton in Kansas. And brother Ray is the volleyball coach at the University of Kansas. His Jayhawks made it to the NCAA Final Four this season, losing to eventual champion Nebraska in the semifinals. March 2016 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

Antique candy dishes hold a mix of sweet and sour yummies. Candied apples and mini cupcakes will do wonders to help chase away the dull days of winter, and help young ladies look forward to sun-filled days ahead. Spring isn’t very far away and what better way to welcome it than with something both old and new. The table is filled with timeless finds from Henry’s Antiques and As Time Goes By Antiques. Colorful glass candy bowls, vintage hankies, and a ceramic tea set are among them. Lovely treats from Baked Expressions including a new twist on candied apples by coloring them blue. Jaime Lyon Art prints of happy owls provide a burst of color. Our girls enjoyed Jelly the Pug fashions and accessories from Hazel and Ollie. Amy Johnson with The Noticed Network shared her amazing space in historic downtown Lee’s Summit for our tea party. The beautiful images are courtesy of Tiffany Marie Photography. Happy spring!

21c Museum Hotel Bentonville Located off the main lobby of 21c, The Hive is a modern restaurant and bar run by executive chef and Arkansas native Matthew McClure, who was a semifinalist for Best Chef: South in the prestigious 2014 James Foundation Awards. McClure showcases Arkansas’s unique culinary identity and features local growers and producers in well-executed breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert menus that highlight refined country cuisine. An inviting respite for a craft cocktail, beer or glass of wine in the bar or an intimate dinner for two in the dining room, The Hive complements the hotel’s art scene, including the chance to invite one of the Green Penguin sculptures to dine at your table. BENTONVILLE SQUARE

Just a short walk from 21c is the square, brimming with an eclectic collection of casual and upscale restaurants. Tusk & Trotter, housed in Sam Walton’s original general office warehouse space, has remnants of interesting

such as exposed trusses and an arched doorway. But those are side notes to be savored while sampling award-winning executive chef-owner Rob Nelson’s divine dishes such as smoked catfish and trout chowder. Table Mesa Bistro features modern Latin cuisine while Tavola Trattoria showcases

cooking.

And

directly across from 21c is Crêpes Paulette, a food truck peddling authentic sweet and savory French crêpes. The lines for this popular al fresco dining experience—especially on weekends—are usually long. But the wait is worth it: Once you sink into the la cochon épicé (spicy piggy) or the la singe fou (nutty monkey), you’ll look around, wondering if somehow you’ve been transported to a Paris street-side café. 46

I

t might be a disservice to call the Longview Cultural Arts Center one of Lee’s Summit best kept secrets. Local patrons nod know-

ingly about the diverse shows, concerts and classes the CAC has been putting on for years in its facility overlooking the vast expanse of land at Longview. But for those who haven’t yet ventured into the art halls, theater spaces or classrooms where actors and artists hone their craft

and show their wares, CAC coordinator Ryan Morehead is more than happy to let you in on the secret. “The thought of, even 10 years ago, having the wide variety of cultural arts activities in Lee’s Summit that we have now would have seemed unimaginable to many and even crazier that so many of them would have been hosted at Longview,” Morehead says. “If you haven’t taken advantage of the arts Lee’s Summit has to offer you’re missing something truly special.” Morehead, originally from Lee’s Summit, became the coordinator of the Metropolitan Community Colleges-Longview Cultural Arts Center in 2012. Before that he was the chairperson of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. The CAC has its roots in emergency, of all things. Officials broke ground on the center in 2006 with the help of a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant. Two years later the CAC opened its doors, and today the cultural hub also doubles as one of the metro area's only FEMA-certified disaster relief shelters. The CAC Gallery features student and faculty works and regularly presents exhibits from new and emerging artists through the regional and nation. Each January, works from talented high school students are featured in a juried exhibit. On average the gallery has seven exhibits per year, two of which are dedicated to our students for, "End of Semester" shows and one exhibit is set aside for our, "Lee's Summit Fine Arts Challenge" which is our local high school annual exhibit. Every other year we have an art faculty exhibit showcasing the latest accomplishments and projects of our faculty. Morehead works with gallery curator Daniel Reneau to arrange the exhibits. "What he brings into the gallery for our students -- and I would

say all who enter the CAC are students in one way or another -- to study and examine is awesome," Morehead says. The center plays host to a diverse events. "On the performance end we have the honor of hosting 3 of the 5 Summit Theatre Group shows on an annual basis," Morehead says. "Since STG has come to our theatre in 2013 they have seen attendance at their shows increase significantly which is great for us and for them." In February the theater was scheduled to host filmmaker Kevin Willmott, who co-wrote Spike Lee's "Chiraq" -- for a talk about the film business. Wilmott's appearance is the kind of interesting and surprising fare that underscores the CAC's contribution to the community as a vital cultural gathering spot. "Simply put, without the support of our students and our community, we can't exist."

When I’m alone in my basement, it’s time to talk to God, to be with God. Christian music is to express your experience with God, not just your musicality." The project inspired others in the World Revival community to create, and there are five albums in the works right now. “Now people see they can do it, too,” says Noel, who is getting to be part of arranging and producing some of them. “I love my church… the sense of community and family we have there. We experience God every single service.” The graphic design, artwork and case were designed and packaged locally. “Mighty King” is available on iTunes, GooglePlay, Amazon and Apple Music. A Stitch in Time

Leaves your Voice

Behind FROM WALL ART TO BED COVERS, QUILTING EVOLVES GLOBALLY

N

o one knows for sure when quilting was originated, however the stitching together of layers of padding and fabric may date back as far as ancient Egypt. Although quilting has taken

many turns down through the years, for the 21st century it is more of an art than a necessity. Rita Briner, owner of Quilter’s Station located at 3680 NE Akin Dr. in Lee’s Summit says Art Quilts have become very popular in the past two decades and many are used as wall art in place of paintings. “Modern quilts have found their place with very vivid colors and large designs,” she adds. However, if you’re ‘old school’ and like the rustic or country themed quilts, Briner says those types of patterns that our ancestors left behind can’t be beat. In addition, the base patterns on the traditional quilts have stayed the same but many twists and turns have been added through the years. Briner adds “the fabrics we have today make it possible to make any color quilt we wish to make.” At her shop, Briner provides room for projects and lessons for classes that are taught by nationally-known artists. Today, the type of fabrics that are manufactured make it possible to make a quilt of any color and because of that, Briner says the quilting industry is alive and doing well with tens of thousands of quilters across the globe. take on the personality of the shop owner and there is so much fabric in the industry not one shop has it all. Briner adds that Quilter’s Station has more than 16,000 bolts of fabric, ranging from Civil War reproduction, novelty, flannel, homespun and batiks. “My hope is that no matter what style of quilt or color of quilt you can pull it all together here. Right now wool is very popular to use as applique on quilts or just small wool projects, so I hand dye many colors of wool to be used for this,” she says. Briner also offers many books and patterns, quilt classes, rug hooking, punch needle and wool work. Here in the Midwest, traditional quilts are favored by quilters and consumers; wanting quilts like a grandmother once made. Even though quilting has transformed from creating by hand stitch to machine stitch and has had its ebb and flow, in Briner’s observation, she feels quilting took a major turn after 9/11. “Women are more determined to make quilts to leave behind their voice to their ancestors about who they were and what they did.” For more information, visit QuiltersStation.com or call 816.525.8955.

Magical Moment A GLIMPSE INTO THE TRULY SPECIAL COMMUNITY OF LEE’S SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL ARTICLE JANICE PHELAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

ighris Sharber is a senior at Lee’s Summit High School who was elected homecoming king by his peers this past fall. Sighris is an outgoing, popular student at his high school. He is a member of the school’s Student Senate and Future Business Leaders of America. He also happens to also have autism. According to Dr. John Faulkenberry, LSHS principal, Sighris probably knows more students and staff members at LSHS than any other student and goes out of his way to talk to others, get to know them and call each person by name. His teacher, Gabe Curtis, says Sighris is one of the first students to greet others in the morning and one of the last students to leave the school in the afternoon. He has been referred to as a ‘mini-historian’ for LSHS because he has a vast amount of knowledge about events that took place at LSHS, many which happened years before he came to the school. Sighris was nominated by dozens of students and selected by an open vote among the school’s seniors. One of his teachers called Sighris’ election as king a magical moment for the school, adding that the students accept Sighris for who he is and do not see him as someone with limitations. The senior class gave Sighris a standing ovation at the homecoming pep assembly -- another great moment. In addition to the encouragement from Sighris’s classmates, staff members came together to support his candidacy as a homecoming king. Staff provided the convertible for Sighris to ride in during the homecoming parade and purchased a new suit, two dress shirts, two ties and a new belt from Men’s Warehouse. LSHS employees also provided photos and a video of the homecoming assembly, parade and dance for Sighris and

his family to keep. Kevin Holman, campus supervisor at LSHS, and his wife, also took Sighris out for dinner before the homecoming dance -something they have done for Sighris before several other school dances over the last few years. Kevin’s daughter even took Sighris’ mother for a make-over in preparation for the weekend, and LSHS staff contributed to a fund to reimburse his mother for lost wages on Friday night to allow her to attend the football game and crowning ceremony. Other employees who went above and beyond included paraprofessional Joanie Ho who helped Sighris get his new suit, and focus facilitator Charlie Minton who helped prepare Sighris for the activities associated with being a king candidate by providing coaching about what to expect as a candidate at the assembly, parade, game appearance and dance. Editor's Note: We are inspired by our community again and again and consider it a blessing to share stories like this with our readers.

Do prenuptial agreements simplify a divorce? Stange Law Firm, PC

For individuals who have a prenuptial agreement, or are thinking about getting one, they often wonder whether or not the prenuptial agreement will simplify the divorce? The hope for many is that they can avoid the court process and have a divorce that is easier. The question is whether or not this is true? The reality is that when parties have a prenuptial agreement and are getting divorced, the prenuptial agreement still has to be filed in the divorce court. Generally, the prenuptial agreement will be filed as part of the initial pleadings by one or both parties to the divorce. The question at that point is whether or not both parties agree to abide by the terms of the prenuptial agreement or whether one party wishes to challenge it. In some cases, a party may allege that the prenuptial agreement should be found not to be enforceable for a

multiplicity of reasons. These reasons can include claims of undue influence, fraud or duress. A party can also complain, in some instances, that the prenuptial agreement was either unconscionable at the time it was entered or at the date of the divorce in some jurisdictions. In other cases, one party might allege that they didn’t have an attorney representing them in the process (if this is true). On top of all of this, in some prenuptial agreements, there may be some matters that were not addressed fully in the prenuptial agreement and may create some ambiguities. These ambiguities would have to be addressed by the family court. Take cases where there might be formulas or criteria in the prenuptial agreement related to property division or spousal support. Additionally, if parties have children, matters of child custody and child support generally cannot be addressed in a prenuptial agreement. Thus, for many parties, there is a lot for parties to still work out on top of the terms of the prenuptial agreement regarding their children.

At the end of the day, a prenuptial agreement can simplify a divorce process in many respects. But there are often a number of issues that still have to be worked out in many cases even if parties agree to abide by the terms of the prenuptial agreement. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC can help. We focus exclusively on family law and handle many types of cases every day. “We loved the miles of walking trails…

Then we saw the pool!” -David and Donna Jones, Woodland Trails Residents

When more than 500 acres became available on 150 Hwy across from the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area, Jim Riffe seized the opportunity. Master Builder/Developer Jim Riffe’s custom homes grace the landscape of more than 80 communities including Loch Lloyd, Deer Creek, Hallbrook, Longview Estates, Nottingham and Iron Horse. He was there when growth swept from College and Roe extending well beyond 199th Street in Johnson County. He saw the opportunity again when he developed Woodland Shores across from Legacy Park in Lee’s Summit.

His instincts and experience told him that same kind of growth was imminent along 150 Hwy, just south of Lee’s Summit in the award winning Lee’ s Summit school district. He invested in almost 4 miles of integrated walking trails, a resort-style pool, creative play areas and more. As the team prepares to unveil next spring’s exciting new phase, it’s the perfect time to visit Woodland Trails, where the area’s finest builders showcase their best work. Visit Woodland Trails and see how one local developer’s artistic vision is defining the area’s strongest housing boom.

“I wanted people to feel that same excitement they experience on their first day of vacation at a luxurious Colorado resort.” -Jim Riffe, Developer
