We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it is someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know, we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. With business experience comes a great deal of wisdom, and those who have been in business for any length of time can tell you that learning always comes before success. We asked local leaders to consider their own unique perspectives and in this issue share their best advice for those just starting out. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you.

Hubble Homes is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and has broken ground on their Greyhawk community, Hubble Hero House, in Kuna. Hubble Homes and its many trade partners donate labor to construct, materials to build, then sell, giving 100% of the proceeds from the sale to seven charities: Advocates Against Family Violence, Alliance Serving Kuna/Kuna Food Bank, Boys & Girls Clubs of Ada & Canyon County, Camp Rainbow Gold, Idaho Humane Society, Idaho Crisis & Suicide Hotline, and Women’s and Children’s Alliance. WELCOME TO IDAHO’S AGRICULTURAL PAST

NEWSWORTHY IN IDAHO

The historic Schick-Ostolasa Farmstead is located in the foothills north of Boise, 15 minutes from downtown. The farmstead was inhabited from the 1860s to 2005. It is the longest continuously inhabited home in the state of Idaho. Today, the preserved Farmstead site covers 2 acres along Dry Creek, with seven historic farm buildings: the Farmhouse, a Detached Red Cookhouse and Spring House (called the Red House), Root Cellar, Woodshed, Saddle Shed, Granary, and a Horse Barn. The historic site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 for its regional significance as an outstanding example of early homesteading in Idaho, and 19th & 20th century agriculture in the West. The Dry Creek Historical Society, Inc., is an Idaho 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization established to preserve the rural agricultural heritage of the Dry Creek Valley, Idaho. Their primary tenets are not only to preserve the Farmstead and property but also to educate. They do this through our School Tours, Events, Farmhouse Tours (May to September), Newsletters, etc. V isit DryCreekHistory.org for more information on the history and to schedule your tour.

South Fork of the Boise River

GET OUT, GET HOOKED Educational tips, gear reviews and videos with YouTube Channel Idaho Mountain Anglers

ARTICLE BY CHELSEA CHAMBERS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

There are few things in life more pleasurable than a misty morning on an Idaho river. The sun still sleeping behind the ridge, rising slowly as the fish begin to stir. For Jon White, and his partner Maria Prekeges, this is paradise. And precisely the paradise that inspired them to create the Idaho Mountain Anglers YouTube channel. “I had wanted to do something like this for a while and living in an area like Sun Valley lends itself nicely to great scenery and fishing opportunities,” shared Jon. “Idaho Mountain Anglers is both for people interested in the sport and seasoned anglers as well. We give educational tips, gear reviews and videos of our experiences on the water.” As a child growing up in Weiser, Jon had easy access to the Salmon River when he visited his grandmother in Riggins and would spend the summers catching rainbow trout for dinner with her. Jon’s affinity for time spent on the water grew as his interests shifted from bait fishing to fly fishing. He enjoys the challenge of fly fishing and learning to master the art of effective casting and fooling a fish with an “imposter” bug on the line. “I never thought I’d become so into fishing like I am now,” Maria said. “I’m still learning in many respects and am thankful to have someone like Jon to help men out so much and make it so much fun for us. Our saying for Idaho Mountain Anglers is Get Out, Get Hooked, and that’s what we hope: for people to get out into the beautiful outdoors and try a sport that we love.”

Jon and Maria encourage everyone to get outside and try their hand at angling. “Don’t be intimidated by the sport, whether it’s fly fishing or any other method. Talk to tackle shops and fly shops, they are very helpful and willing to help you get into fishing. There are also a myriad of free clinics and groups to get involved in to help get started.” The pair also recommends hiring a guide. Guides have a wealth of knowledge and experience, and they love to pass it along, especially to beginners. When asked what their favorite spots were, they replied, “Some of my favorite places to fish would be: Big Wood River; Silver Creek near Picabo, Idaho;

The Big Lost River; Salmon River near Stanley; and Riggins, Crane falls Reservoir outside Mountain Home; and the Owyhee River below the Owyhee Reservoir dam. Specific spots are always a secret! And of course, be sure to check out Idaho Mountain Anglers on YouTube for the latest tips, tricks, and gear to help you get the most out of your outdoor experiences. Some of their more popular videos include topics like the Three Best Knots for Fly Fishing and a review on Trout Fishing at Henrys Lake. So, what are you waiting for? The invitation is clear: the great outdoors are waiting for you! CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / M E R I D I A N

Growing up, Wyatt Naillon always reached for the top. He was state runner-up in discus and student body president during his senior year of high school. When he switched majors in college, he delved into clubs that would help him succeed in his chosen field. He went from business to engineering to biology, and participated in Bio Club, Quizbowl Club, student research at BSU, and pre-med club. Now he’s graduated with a bachelor’s in molecular biology, and he wants to change the world. There’s always been one thing he’s carried with him throughout his whole life, and that’s the determination to make the planet a greener place. In Challis, Idaho, his father was a naturalist and an avid outdoorsman, so Naillon spent his childhood surrounded by nature. He saw the potential for what the environment could do for people, but also witnessed how poorly it was treated. He vowed to make a difference, and worked through college to make enough money to start up a business. In 2021, Naillon started Gaia Industrees, named after the Earth Mother of Greek mythology. Instead of using plastic, he turned to bamboo. “It’s cheaper, grows faster, and sequesters carbon better,” Naillon said. So far, Naillon has sold two styles of hairbrush, combs, toothbrushes, and water bottles, all 100% biodegradable. He already has many ideas for future products, such as finishing out the bathroom line with beard combs and wide-toothed combs because bamboo is better at distributing oils in hair. Naillon also hopes to start looking at ideas for kitchenware and other potential products.

“Sustainability for everyone” is Gaia’s mission for the future. While Naillon understands that it’s hard to be completely sustainable, he’s set out to do what he can. He’s already brought Gaia back to his hometown, and continues to push for involvement. He’s open to doing more projects and sponsorships to further bring awareness to his solution for sustainability, especially among children and education. “The ideal situation for Gaia is to bring sustainability to the mainstream,” Naillon said. “We want to make it available and affordable, and take the responsibility that big corporations and the government refuse to take.” Recently, Gaia got its first big break after the company sponsored Miniminuteman, a young Youtuber who jumped to fame with his archeology videos. Immediately after, Naillon sold out on water bottles, compelling him to create new lines of products in order to keep up with sales. In the past four months, the company has sold internationally, such as Germany and Australia. Instead of sharing his story on their website, he’s traded out his bio with a bio about his customers. Naillon wants to build a community based around his company, which would allow for further growth and influence of sustainability. His customers aren’t specifically defined, only along the idea of, “anyone who cares.” The big goal, in Naillon’s mind, is to contribute to the end of global warming, as 15% of profits go toward the research in combating the issue. “I always knew I wanted to start a business with a purpose, and this has been very rewarding in many aspects. It’s a big deal for me to go home and be able to give every kid a toothbrush. I’m really proud of our work, and I hope we can continue to promote our cause.” You can see Naillon’s products at gaiaindustrees.com.

I’d always felt a strong pull toward my creative side but didn’t know it could be a potential path to an actual career. I was never told it was an option as a kid. After graduating college and listening to my heart, I eventually started a clothing company from my garage in the mid 90s called Paul Frank. Looking back I think a couple keys to my success were: 1. Being naive - which lead to risks perhaps I would not have taken but didn’t know otherwise 2. Perfecting my craft spending countless hours refining and designing. 3. Not accepting the word “No” at any point along my journey. Now go get yours! CoffeeAndSupplyCo.com

Your first job might not be one that is in line with your dreams and goals for a career, but any first job is a great start on personal development. It may feel like doing chores at home, but the pay is better and it is a great way to learn how to work with a team, time management, and respect for authority. If you choose a career or life path that benefits others and makes you happy, you are fortunate. It is ok to change your mind and re-direct your path, but whatever you do, be honest with yourself and others, handle yourself and others with respect and integrity, and above all, follow through with your obligations. “Be kind, always.” You never know what is happening in someone else’s world and what could be driving their behavior, good or bad. Approaching every interaction with a mindset of kindness will set you up for success both personally and professionally. In tandem with a compassion for others, he also raised me with certain core values that I now call “The 5 F’s”: family, faith, finance, fitness, and fun. These 5 foundations can be incorporated into any kind of lifestyle to fit your particular needs, and once established they will always steer you in the right direction. Striving toward personal and professional fulfillment can start today, no matter what stage of life you find yourself in. One goal, one “F” at a time. MortgageFirstFed.com CONTINUED >

For me, I get to work early, 4 or 5 am is common. I want to get work in while my competition is asleep. It is how I developed the trait that will get you where you want to be (wherever that is): grit. You will find it sooner or later because you have to learn how to survive and thrive. You will fail and fall down; we all do. When that happens, some complain, others get up. Get up. Celebrate that you do without excuses and drive on; that is grit that will bring you success (and surround yourself with folks who have it). Until then, remember that you are better than nobody, and nobody is better than you. Borton-Lakey.com

For someone considering the mortgage business as a career, I would say that you need to be willing to accept the risk of being on commissions only, and the fact that there will be periods of high and low incomes. Find a mentor, or a company that has a robust training program. You also need to love people, and understand that it’s a “sales” type industry. You need to build and maintain relationships, and give the best service possible to retain those partnerships. Another benefit is that you have flexibility in your work hours, so you’ll have time for family, and time for yourself. I keep balanced by enjoying Idaho’s great outdoors with my wife and best friend, Kerri. AcademyMortgage.com

Your thoughts become your reality. Have you heard the saying, “If you can think it, you can achieve it?” It’s true. When you have nothing to think about, what are you thinking? Take advantage of your thought process, it’s free! You can imagine anything you want at no cost. This is especially important while you’re young and planning for the future. As you think, you begin to plan. As you plan, you begin to strategize. As you strategize, you start to put pieces together. As these pieces come together you create an opportunity for execution. If your imagination is laced with positivity and encouraging thoughts, it will naturally create exceptional ideas that can only lead you on a successful journey. Linkedin.com/in/patrick-clayton-amp

As an individual entering the workforce or wanting to excel, look to develop a strong and diverse network. You never know where a handshake, an introduction, or a business card will lead you or when it will become valuable. Networking has been one of the most valuable tools in my entrepreneurial career. I also believe in setting realistic and achievable, short and long term, goals. Goals are great tools to help guide your decision making, time allocation and career direction. Don’t ever think if it as “just a job”….whatever it may be…you have now become the CEO of yourself and your future. At every moment of your post school professional life you’re writing your resume. How you perform your assigned duties and day to day tasks are written in the memory of your employer…your resume. Honesty, be honest to yourself and your abilities. Loyalty, be loyal to your employer, employers will reciprocate. Accountability, be accountable for your actions good or bad. Respect…yourself and your abilities, understand your peers, and certainly your supervisor and their decisions. Treat your peers and your employer as you would like to be treated… and always that which is fair for one is fair for all…no matter their stature. Write your resume, everyday. LithiaFordBoise.com

Careers don’t make a person and they won’t truly define you. How you live your life and treat those around you define your potential for success. Money comes and goes and careers may rise and fall - but how you handle these challenges will define your legacy. Doing something for money, status or recognition will lead to a never-ending treadmill - and when success is elusive, it can be crushing. However, if you focus on leadership (not management), treating customers and employees as you would treat your family (assuming you like your family) and strive daily to be the best version of yourself, you are more likely to be happy, healthy, successful, respected and a leader that can inspire change. As I look back over my 38-year career in banking I am asked frequently for my advice on career and life. It’s simple. Put family first! Take that time to be with the people that matter most because you will never get those times back. Don’t be in a hurry. Slow down and find your passion. You have your whole life ahead of you and it does go by fast. Don’t chase the dollars and title. Remember you will always be learning so take time to develop that breadth and depth of experience. Be passionate, focused, consistent, and live your life serving others with honesty, integrity, character, and empathy. And at the end of the day, never lose sight of what’s important …family.” Bright.Bank

Ada/Eagle Sports Complex & B i ke Pa r k

Ride from Eagle to Lucky Peak Reservoir on Mountain Bike Trails Encompassing over 200 acres, The Ada/Eagle Sports Complex and Bike Park is one of the largest in the country. The multi-use facility is jointly operated by Ada County Parks & Waterways and the City of Eagle. The park includes an extensive series of trails that connect to the Ridge to Rivers trail system so you can ride from Eagle to Lucky Peak Reservoir on mountain bike trails. The park offers trails skill levels ranging from beginner to expert abilities. Other features include freeride jump lines, a pump track, dirt jumps, dual slalom racecourse, mountain cross racecourse, and a BMX track. In addition to world class mountain bike trails, the Sports Complex also offers a skate park, basketball courts, and an inline hockey rink. You can access the park by vehicle on the west side of the property from Old Horseshoe Bend Rd. Bikers and hikers can also enter the park from the east using the Ridge to Rivers trail system.

Pump Track This Pump Track is a popular 397 ft mountain bike trail consisting of a sequence of rollers and berms (swoopy, banked turns) designed to maximize your momentum so you can ride with minimal pedaling. Functioning like a small rollercoaster, the track is a tool to increase your handling skills on the bike and also something that’s really fun to ride.

The first skills most riders learn are centered around staying safely on the trail, riding efficiently, and gaining overall balance on the bike. These are the skills that allow us to crash less and ride longer. Armed with these core pillars of mountain bike technique you can progress to more advanced skills quite quickly. Riders at every level can benefit from attending clinics where one can learn how to do new things, or how to do them differently.

Eagle Skatepark covers 12,500 sq. ft. and features transitions with no-coping ledges, stairs and rails. Also known as flow parks (or Park style) they combine elements of both bowl parks and street plazas. In a well designed skate park, the curved walls allow such tricks as quarter pipes, pump bumps and bowl corners without taking their feet off to push. They can use that speed to hit street obstacles such as stairs, railings and benches.

BMX bicycle races are sprint races on purpose-built off-road single-lap race tracks usually about 15 feet (4.6 m) wide with large banked corners angled inward, that help the riders maintain speed. The sport of BMX racing is facilitated by a number of regional and international sanctioning bodies. The sport is very family oriented and largely participant-driven, with riders ranging in age from 2 to over 70. Professional ranks exist for both men and women, where the ages range from 17 to over 40 years old.

THE SIREN CALL OF THE DRIVE-IN In 2018, Ada County Highway District ripped into the asphalt of the State Highway 44 and Veterans Memorial Parkway intersection. The project held up traffic for months and demolished a local landmark, Smoky Davis. But one business stood firm at the edge of the devastation: Viking Drive-In, a burger stand in operation since the early 1960s. Four years later, “The Viking” still serves classic fare surrounded by honking cars and fresh concrete. Its survival is part of a longlived trend: The decades go by, but Boise’s burger stands — including Hawkins Pac Out, Fanci Freez, Westside Drive-In, and Big Bun Drive-In — remain. Apart from fry sauce, what secret sauce keeps these drive-ins afloat?

NOSTALGIA YOU CAN EAT For Bill Hawes and his wife, Alison, who purchased Fanci Freez in 2017, the drive-in’s appeal was deep-rooted nostalgia. “My mom went to Boise High in the ‘50s and it was like her favorite place,” he said, adding that Fanci Freez’s cross-generational charm and reliably good food have inspired repeat business since 1947. “... We’re close to Boise High, so we get a lot of students [who] come for lunch. There’s a connection made there at that age group, and then those people come back.”

DRIVE-THRU TIME MACHINES Adam Chandler, author of “Drive-Thru Dreams: A Journey Through the Heart of America’s Fast-Food Kingdom,” offered a macro view. “We are very much a culture of convenience, but we also know what we like. That can be meaningful when you’re on the road and you want something you know is going to taste the way you like [it]. It’s also meaningful in a time where there’s a lot of upheaval and you want something comforting that reminds you of perhaps a different time.” Louis Aaron’s experience backs that up. He has been chef/owner of Westside Drive-In since 1994, where the restaurant’s crackling speakers and shouted orders harken back to ‘57. “Every time there is a crisis in America — when 9/11 happened, or the financial crisis in 2008 happened, or COVID happened — our sales just go through the roof. People want somewhere they can go and have fun and escape that everyday crisis mode,” he said.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION One could argue America has been in the midst of turbulent times since the ‘50s, but not every city is bursting with family-owned drive-ins. Boise’s car-friendly layout and location in Mountain West cattle country

give it a leg up. Idaho’s cattle provide key ingredients: beef and cheese for burgers, and ice cream for shakes. “A hamburger is synonymous in a lot of ways with American life and American food,” Chandler said, pointing to the humble burger’s portability and association with the frontier.

LOYAL TO LOCAL Teamwork has also played a role in the drive-ins’ success. Aaron recalled a time in the ‘90s when competing owners banded together as the Independent Drive-In Restaurants Association. They used their power to win better food prices, but the partnership dissolved by the early 2000s. Aaron also credited customer support for helping Westside thrive and expand, saying, “I think Boise has a unique attachability to local restaurants.” In a time when more and more chains are arriving in the City of Trees, we’ll raise a fry to that.

30 YEARS DEDICATION TO THE COMMUNITY In loving memory of Meteorologist and Philanthropist, Larry Gebert, and for the people he touched and hundreds of charities he supported

Editor’s note: We asked fellow KTVB friends to share their memories of Larry Gebert who passed away peacefully Friday, April 1st. Donations in Larry’s honor can be given to IdahoCF.org. Mark Johnson: “I’ve known Larry since 1996 when I came back to Boise. In that 26 year span, we worked together hundreds of times on events that spanned everything from the rodeo to the Boise River Festival, from parades, telethons, Boise State pregame shows to countless non-profit galas and so much more. He was much more than a work colleague. He was a friend who I would often sit down with when I had a spare 20 minutes at the station to ask him how he was doing. What followed would always make me smile as he spun yarns about his day, his month and his life experiences. It’s often said there will never be another (add name here)….but those who knew him know that there will NEVER be another Larry Gebert.” Maggie O’Mara: “He welcomed me right away when I joined the morning team as a young, rookie anchor. He invited me over to join his family for the holidays when I was single and had no family here of my own. I have the best memories of Larry’s famous turkey & stuffing at Thanksgiving, and his famous prime rib at Christmas. His wife Julie and his three sons, Austin, Mike and David, welcomed me with open arms. They always made me feel like family. Their house was filled with love. They were his heart. You need to know, Larry loved this community, and all of you, our viewers, more than anything. He dedicated his life to raising money for nonprofits and highlighting community events. That was what brought him the most joy. This community was his soul.” Doug Petcash: “Larry had such a love for our community. He emceed and/or auctioneered countless events helping to raise millions of dollars for nonprofits. He once told me he did about 80 or so events each year. The first time I helped organize a fundraiser for the Meridian Food Bank, Larry volunteered to emcee it before I even asked, and I was about to ask, because he was the best. That’s just the kind of guy he was. One of my favorite things I did with Larry every year was the 7Cares Idaho Shares Fred Meyer Toy Shopping Spree to benefit the Salvation Army of Twin Falls. It felt good to team up to help the kids, and it was always a nice drive there and back with plenty of good conversation, and probably one or two of Larry’s long stories that he was well known for.”
