DARS, WE CAN’T HELP BUT SING THE LINE FROM THE TEMPTATIONS’ “MY GIRL” THAT GOES, “WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE, I’VE GOT THE MONTH OF MAY.” This month brings with it an abundance of joy—bright blue skies, a rainbow of flowers and, of course, the celebration of women. In this issue, we highlight some wonderful women in our community. We are grateful they have shared their stories and their journeys with us. The following pages are filled with words to inspire us all to appreciate the women in our lives and to strengthen the connection we have with our mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. The Women’s issue serves to recognize the powerful role women have in our community and beyond. (And don’t worry, gentlemen; you’ll have your moment— stay tuned.) “Evenings are a great time to spend on your patio, especially once the weather gets hot.” bring color and style to this private outdoor space. However, knowing the right elements to use is key. Matthew Klyn is a landscape designer and owner of Garden, a boutique landscape and garden design firm. He is well-known for his designs in and beyond Atlanta and designs beautiful and interesting garden patios of all shapes and sizes. When planning a patio garden, he stresses that many variables have to be taken into account. The right amounts of sun and water are paramount for maintaining a healthy and vibrant garden, and choosing the right plantings is essential. Since you want the garden to look good year-round, he recommends staying away from annuals and most blooming flowers. These take a lot of work and need to be replaced continually. It’s fine to have some, but he prefers to add colors with textures and containers. “Lighting is also critical since you don’t just want to enjoy your garden during the day,” Matt says. Evenings are a great time to spend on your patio, especially once the weather gets hot. To enjoy the cooler temperatures and great city views, make sure you have the right illumination. KATHLEEN BERTRAND, A MULTIFACETED RECORDING ARTIST AND WRITER, IS A NATIVE OF ATLANTA WHO GREW UP IN THE OLD FOURTH WARD. "My greatest influences were my mother, a factory worker whose husband —my dad—died when I was 5 and women at my church who attended Spelman College. They were smart, they were leaders, and they were beautiful and elegant." Kathleen's performances have ranged from two Olympic Games to performances before two presidents, as well as appearances at jazz festivals worldwide. She toured and recorded as a vocalist with jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers. She co-founded HIP Atlanta, a nonprofit dedicated to the growth of diverse leadership in Atlanta’s hospitality industry. It was no surprise to many when she began talking in 2009 about a new film festival to attract people of color to Atlanta’s growing film industry. I felt that my task was to use BronzeLens to not only be a platform for aspiring filmmakers of color but also to expose others in the community to a plethora of job opportunities in what was at that time the newest industry in Atlanta: the film business." Kathleen has received numerous awards for her work with BronzeLens. In 2016, she was given the Georgia Highlight Award as part of the annual Georgia Film Gala. In 2018, she received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from her alma mater, Spelman College, which honored her careers in both hospitality and the film industry. Additionally, in 2018, she was inducted into the Atlanta Hospitality Hall of Fame, which also honored her dual career. Her proudest moment to date was when BronzeLens was named as an Academy Award-qualifying film festival. "Also, in just this last awards season, our best short film made it to the top 10 list of nominees for the Best Short Film Award," she says. We know there are many more accolades to come!
