FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO….ONE! HAPPY NEW YEAR! Cheers to new beginnings and a clean slate. As we begin 2021, we set goals for what we want our future selves to become. We take a glance back at where we have been and what we have done, and try

resolutions, we also leave some room to change our minds—to grow and be human. Here at Minneapolis Lakes, we are so proud of the growth and perseverance in our community through the last year and cannot wait to work towards a brighter future. As businesses ebb and flow, communities unite, non-profits make strides, and the world continues to turn, the Minneapolis Lakes team will be there to share your stories and celebrate your milestones. January marks our annual Health & Wellness issue and we connected with some new businesses in the community who are focused on overall improvement. Statera | health, which recently opened in Edina, offers a range of cutting-edge technology to help gather baseline measurements in order to optimize your wellness strategy. Dr. Jordan Shilts and Dr. Jaron Faber specialize in their field and are there to guide you through the entire process. The team at Your CBD Store, Nick Williams and Kevin Costello help answer some of the frequently asked questions surrounding CBD and how safe it is for daily life. In speaking with Teresa Briest, owner of Tangletown CrossFit, we learned how variety really is the spice of this fitness routine. With their WODs (workouts of the day), personal training and nutrition coaching, this organization is equipped to help any ability level.

OPINIONS SEEM TO BE SPLIT ON THE WISDOM OF FRIENDS RISKING THEIR SPECIAL BONDS BY GOING INTO BUSINESS TOGETHER. John D. Rockefeller once warned of the fine line, saying: “A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.” Alfred A. THE RIGHT FIT A WORKOUT REGIMEN FOR ALL LEVELS

CROSSFIT® FOCUSES ON FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS THROUGH WEIGHTLIFTING, GYMNASTICS AND ENDURANCE EXERCISES. Its ever changing Workout of the Day (WOD) keeps things interesting and enjoyable for people of all ages. Whether you’re a hard-core athlete, or someone new to the gym, the exercises can be adapted for your level of fitness and for your individualized goals. “In your CrossFit® class, every age and ability are mixed,” says Teresa Briest, owner of Tangletown CrossFit. “You can modify and you can scale and our coaches are trained how to help you.” Teresa grew up playing sports - first basketball, then volleyball, and then her real passion, swimming. After she had her children, she got into triathlons, which led her to CrossFit®. “One of my friends from triathlon decided to try CrossFit®, and lo and behold, we then got into CrossFit®,” she says. “That was 10 or 12 years ago and it’s been CrossFit® and swimming ever since.” Teresa took over ownership of Tangletown, which opened in 2012, just over five and a half years ago. She says it’s a community-based gym with really great members. “I think right now with COVID, it allows people to come in and feel safe, but also communicate and socialize with friends,” she says. “We’re very supportive of everybody, so everyone is welcome. It’s exciting to see the coaches and the athletes and people helping each other out.” ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY LUCY HAWTHORNE 20

Teresa says all it usually takes is one to two times for people to get hooked on CrossFit®. Tangletown encourages folks to come in and try it out to realize that it’s not intimidating. Sometimes people will start with drop-in classes, but the majority become long-term full members once they decide that once a week is not enough. “They just find that CrossFit® offers a lot, from barbell lifting with the Olympic lifts, plus strength training with squats and deadlifts, to gymnastics and metabolic conditioning, which is your cardio, like swimming, running, or biking,” she says. When you come into Tangletown and most CrossFit® gyms, says Teresa, the main thing you’ll see is their rig which is right in the middle. This is where all your pull-up bars and squat stations are located. “Our rings hang from there and so that’s your main focus,” she says. “You’ll also see a lot of Olympic lifting barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and medicine balls. Since CrossFit® is constantly varied, there are also sandbags and ropes. You can learn one movement on dumbbells, and then you transition that movement to a barbell and then you do it with the sandbag. There’s a lot of ways to change that same movement so you’re not using the same piece of equipment all the time.” Including Teresa, there are a total of eight coaches, each with very diverse backgrounds. She, of course, is a swimmer, while another has a Pilates and yoga background. One is an NCAA track athlete, and another is an Olympic lifting coach. All are certified in CrossFit®. In addition to group classes, Tangletown also offers personal coaching. “If you want to work on a certain skill, you have that oneon-one time that’s catered just for what you want to get better at,” she says. “Or, if you’re limited in your movement, are injured, or have been injured, it’s a good way to work with a coach one on one to assess what they can do to help you. That’s why personal training works well for people.” Besides guidance on exercise, Teresa has also incorporated a nutrition program into their repertoire. “We have three different nutrition coaches and I’m one of them,” she says. “We’re not dieticians, but we have certificates in nutrition. 22

Minneapolis Lakes | January 2021

“The nutrition part of what we do is more behavioral and emotional. Basically, how to get healthy and stay healthy for the long haul based on what you’re already doing or what you can do better, and making better choices. It’s about living life with a doable nutrition program that is very specific to each individual based on what they need.” Teresa said that they’ve seen the latest group of people grow and make some really good and healthy changes during this time when people are not getting out much, but have time at home to cook. Throughout the pandemic, Teresa states that they have been doing an excellent job of keeping clients and staff safe. Even though they are allowed to have 14 people in a class at one time, they cap them at 12. All participants are more than eight feet apart, so they go above and beyond the six feet requirement. Everyone has their own sanitized square to work out in, with their own equipment. “We know beforehand how many people are coming and exactly who’s coming,” says Teresa. “After they leave, the floors are sanitized and cleaned. We also open up our garage-sized doors to let in fresh air all the time. Everyone wears masks, except when working out, which is also allowed under the state of Minnesota guidelines. When it comes to those, we’re top notch.” To find out more about Tangletown CrossFit, go to https://www. tangletowncrossfit.com/.

TREATING THE ROOT CAUSE OF PAIN AND ILLNESS

WHEN DR. JORDAN SHILTS AND DR. JARON FABER WERE IN CHIROPRACTIC SCHOOL, THEY REALIZED THERE WAS A LOT MORE TO A HEALTHY BODY THAN SIMPLY BALANCING THE PHYSICAL STRUCTURE. So, they set out to create a hybrid of the traditional chiropractic model, and that’s what became the basis of Statera | health, which opened in Edina in May of 2020. “So often I feel like we define health as the absence of disease, but in forming this practice we knew that it should be so much more than that” says Dr. Shilts. Statera | health provides treatments from pain and complex illness to anti-aging and wellness, through two clinical models. There is a health optimization model that offers memberships and packages for patients who may be feeling older than their actual age; and then there are health recovery programs, which are for individuals suffering from issues like fatigue, brain fog, digestive challenges, weight gain, and chronic pain. “Our goal with the health recovery programs is to get you back to doing what you love,” says Dr. Shilts. “And we do that through four health recovery programs - brain recovery, gut repair and detox, performance recovery and weight loss.” What sets Statera apart from traditional clinics, he says, is its application of functional medicine and functional testing. The purpose is to collect as much information as possible to help patients before they develop health problems.

“We want to identify dysfunction before it becomes a disease, which is the staple of functional medicine,” says Dr. Shilts. The two practitioners collect a very personalized, in-depth health history of their patients to find the root cause of their issues. “We’re going to ask things about your lifestyle,” he says. “Maybe your shoulder is hurting, and you’re thinking it’s trauma related, but it might be something in your blood chemistry, or maybe you have a poor diet and poor sleep patterns, and your inflammation markers are higher. Those factors may be attributing to the pain. “Once we gather this information, we may do more exploring and send you for special laboratory testing to identify the function of all your systems in order to get a 360° view of your health. When we get those results back and we’ve identified through the patient what they would like to optimize, we’re going to personalize nutrition and lifestyle consultations, and provide ongoing support through your health optimization journey.” The in-office testing and cellular health assessments provide a critical understanding of how an individual is functioning. “One of our sayings in the clinic is, ‘If you’re not measuring, you’re not managing,’” says Dr. Shilts. “We can get a really quick assessment of things like body composition, hydration status, inflammation, zinc, vitamin D and micronutrients.” What really makes Statera | health different, he explains, is its cutting-edge health therapies and technologies. The goal with these is to influence cellular health and restore energy levels like never before. “We like to say that we’re a health optimization clinic,” he says. Depending on patients’ issues and goals, there are a number of treatments available:

03 Next add in paprika, cumin, coriander + 1tsp black pepper, allow spices to bloom in the oil until fragrant, 30 seconds. 04 Deglaze the pan with tomato sauce and add in ½ tsp salt. 05 Add in chickpeas, turn heat up to medium, cook until reduced by half, about 5 minutes. 06 Fold in chopped kale, it will shrink. 07 Turn the heat off and top with fish filets. 08 Sprinkle the cod with remaining ¼ tsp salt + ¼ black pepper. 09 Pop the entire pan into the oven until the fish is opaque and flaky, around 20 minutes. 10 Garnish with chopped parsley, olive, and squeeze of lemon. **This recipe was developed with Morton’s Kosher Salt, please note salts can vary in their level of saltiness. When we season as we go, it develops more flavor.
