LIFESTYLE LETTER

No dust under our feet.

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Mike Tucker | MTucker@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR

Chelsea Lyn Agro | Chelsea.Agro@CityLifestyle.com

I have a hard time sitting still even though I'm a homebody. As any homeowner knows, there is always something to be done. And when that thing is done, there's another thing right behind it. I credit my eagerness and ambition to my little slice of land in the Bitterroot Valley. There is peacefulness in working with the ground—tilling, planting, aerating, raking, mowing, watering—and a humbleness that exists because of that constant grounding. I am working but my work isn't finished. Even though this is the "explore" issue, I feel the need to bring up home because when we go out into this world in search of new things, we get that courage or determination from where we begin. My relaxation, oddly enough, is when I leave home and get to just "be" somewhere else with no agenda. It makes me see the world in full color without my nose being buried in some task. I get to soak up the richness of adventure with enthusiasm because my work at home fuels me. This season is ripe for the taking, maybe even my favorite season in Montana. The trees are so vibrant with that translucent electric green, the air smells of freshly thawed soil, and there's a fever in everyone and everything. The best kind of fever of course, when spotted fawns chase each other in dewy meadows, black angus calves harass their mothers, and foals lie in the early season sun without a care in the world. It is a portrait of reprieve. From the hard work of winter, from darker days, from a more monochromatic world. Mother Nature seems to be our biggest mentor—tough but inspiring, the way a good mentor should be. She encourages us to make a plan and set sail for something new, but to stay grounded all the while. Wherever your travels take you this season, I hope no dust settles your feet and you're busy with the best of things.

Got Milk?

Fly Fishing 101

Mothers' Milk Bank of Montana needs breast milk more now than ever. For a variety of reasons, a baby's mother is sometimes unable to provide her own milk to meet her baby's needs, and that's where the Mothers' Milk Bank of Montana comes in. If you are toward the end of your breast feeding journey and have enough milk for your own child or you wish to donate your milk based on another reason, please contact MothersMilkBankofMT.org to get started!

This class is for both experienced and inexperienced fly fishing enthusiasts wanting to catch more fish! You will learn how to identify bug life along with corresponding flies and the many different species of fish in Montana. The second night of class, you will meet at a local fly shop for a field trip. Also included in this class will be discussions and illustrations on how to read water, understand the gear and equipment, tie basic knots and rig your own rod! Bright Tip: Powder Room Remodels

WESTERN MONTANA LIGHTING OFFERS LIGHTING ADVICE

ARTICLE BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA SPAULDING

Surprises and limitations. Sounds like a room remodel, right? Drew Mihelish, owner and lighting consultant at Western Montana Lighting, sheds some light on, well, lighting! With any remodel, it’s important to remember what is behind the drywall or above you in the ceiling to determine the best ways to light the space. For bathrooms, in particular, Drew recommends sconces with ample light output, because sconces evenly light an individual’s face, accompanied with overhead lighting. This reduces shadows, which is always helpful in a main bath where people may be shaving or applying makeup. However, if the bathroom has limited use, that is an opportunity for more creativity with less focus on usable light. For instance, Drew prefers to focus more on the overall mood of the space rather than being task-oriented. The creativity in these spaces can be limitless. Western Montana Lighting has received national recognition as Showroom of the Year in 2020 and is nominated again in 2022. Whether you’re a homeowner, designer, architect, electrician, or builder, Western Montana Lighting can assist you with lighting, one-of-a-kind artwork, décor, fans, and even furniture to make your space feel complete. “Design is something I am very passionate about and lighting is a specialty within the realm of overall design that I have fallen head over heels for.” - Drew Mihelish

G E A R GU ID E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

Stepping into Allie and Tyler's garage is like visiting the best curated selection of equipment for biking enthusiasts. It makes you want to throw your arms around everything and ask questions later because you know, with the various options and attachments, there is a logical explanation for each item that can only come from years of experience and education.

GIVE ME A RUNDOWN OR LAY-OF-THE-LAND OF YOUR BIKING EQUIPMENT. WHAT DO YOU HAVE AND WHAT IS EACH ATTACHMENT/BIKE USED FOR? We have six bikes total, so I guess you could say we are bike hoarders. We each have two mountain bikes: one XC (cross country) bike for all-around riding and racing and one trail bike for more aggressive trails and fun rides. Plus a cyclocross bike and an electric cargo family bike.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC BRANDS THAT YOU LOVE MOST? WHY? A: For mountain biking, the Mac Ride is a must have! It allows you to ride singletrack safely with a little one. We started riding with Ryder, our eldest son, when he was 6 months old. I take him up the main corridor of the Rattlesnake all summer long. We love ripping it down Spring Gulch and Curry. But the Radwagon is my absolute favorite. It is so fun to commute with this piece of equipment. When fully loaded, I can carry two kids, two dogs, and extra gear (kid bikes, backpacks, groceries, etc). It is the minivan of bikes. We love to bomb around town and also head to the river with this bike

T: It makes riding fun for both the kid and the adult. The kid is out front and gets to see where they are going and gets the feel of leaning into the corners and feeling the wind in their face.

BOTH OF YOU HAVE SUCH BUSY SCHEDULES, AND FOR MANY PARENTS GETTING READY FOR A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WITH KIDS IS DAUNTING. TELL ME WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE WHEN YOU BOTH WANT TO TAKE THE KIDS BIKING (MOUNTAIN OR ROAD). A + T: We honestly find getting the kids ready to ride on the commuter bike easier sometimes, rather than loading them in their car seats. They love to ride on the RadWagon so they are always eager to get in it versus the car which sometimes they absolutely hate. They just wear normal clothes and a bike helmet— so not that difficult to get ready. When we go mountain biking Ryder typically beats us to the bike. Last year was hard because we had one kid under one and the other child almost two so they were at such different levels in regards to biking. This year we will definitely be able to get both kids on their own Mac Ride and ride trails as a family.

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THE BIKING COMMUNITY IN MISSOULA, SPECIFICALLY THE RATTLESNAKE AREA/ NEIGHBORHOOD? A + T: One word: epic. We basically moved here because of the superb access to singletrack out of our back door. It’s such a great community that fosters cycling for all ages. From watching the young kids in derailers up to local cyclocross races held by MTCX at the Ten Spoon Winery, the Rattlesnake is a community that embodies cycling as a lifestyle.

TELL ME ABOUT A TIME WHEN A PIECE OF YOUR GEAR CAME IN HANDY AND SAVED THE DAY. A: I can’t think of a time when gear saved the day, but I will tell you about a time when everything went horribly wrong. I was riding on the Bitterroot Trail near Victor with my son, who was only eight months old, towing him in the Thule chariot, and I was four months pregnant with our youngest. When we started the ride there was a small wind advisory, but being the avid cyclists that we are we decided wind would add a little extra challenge. On our way out, I had the most amazing tailwind. I recall feeling like I was going 30 miles per hour with very minimal effort. We proceeded to go about eight miles and then decided we better turn around when the weather worsened. When we decided to turn around this is when it got real bad. As we tried to ride towards Stevensville we hit 30-mile per hour headwinds. At this point during our ride we quickly realized the chariot does not do well with this high of headwinds. I felt like it was almost elevating off the ground with my son in it. My husband sprinted for home to get the car while my son and I sheltered in place along the highway. Let me tell you, it felt like a total mom-fail moment. Eventually we made it home with the help from a nice older couple. So my recommendation would be not to take the chariot out in high winds as it is not very aerodynamic.

18

G E A R GU ID E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

WHERE DID BOTH OF YOU GET YOUR LOVE OF BIKING? T: Mine started when I was 10 years old and my dad had to get ACL surgery. His recovery was supposed to include riding a stationary bike, but that was too boring so we both got mountain bikes. It basically flourished from there and I’ve been an avid cyclist ever since. A: I grew up riding horses and eventing. When I went to college I could not have a horse so the closest thing I could find to provide the same amount of thrill and excitement was mountain biking. Mountain biking had the same type of outdoor adventure and challenge that I loved about riding horses.

HOW ARE THE KIDS LIKING BEING ON A BIKE? Ryder loves riding in the MacRide. He is transitioning now into riding his own Strider bike. Hayden loves riding on the Radwagon but almost instantly falls asleep once we start moving. We’ll see how this summer goes, he’ll be one and now able to ride the MacRide.

ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS WHO WANT TO GET OUT MORE WITH THEIR KIDS? EASY PLACES TO START? Our kids are still so young, so we’re still trying to figure this all out. But I guess if I have any advice I would say just get out and try it. The only way to see if your kids are going to like it is to try it. Missoula Parks and Rec and MTB Missoula have also done an amazing job at providing awesome access to trails and skill parks throughout Missoula.

Explore Island Life Montana-Style on Wild Horse Island State Park

Flathead Lake’s largest island sits off the western shore just past Big Arm Bay. The island is named for the small herd of wild horses that reside there but it is also home to bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and mule deer. Even bears make the occasional swim. Two-legged visitors can visit the island by boat. Keep in mind, there are limited landing sites and it will take you about an hour to paddle from the lakeshore to the island. For a hassle-free visit, book a seat on the shuttle provided by Big Arm Boat Rentals or opt for a personal charter through Wild Horse Island Boat Trips. Once on the island, you can hike, enjoy a picnic, and watch the wildlife. Visit FWP.MT.gov/Wild-Horse-Island for more information.

Go Underground at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

Get ready for a subterranean adventure with a visit to one of the largest known limestone caverns in the Northwest. Those with small children or limited mobility can take the Paradise Tour to experience the Paradise Room, the largest and most decorated area of the cave. For those looking for a greater challenge, choose the Classic Tour to navigate the twists and turns of the caverns on a two-mile journey up and down 600 stairs. You must be on a tour to access the caverns and a small fee is charged based on age. The caverns are located 15 miles east of Whitehall. Tours run from late May to late September. The park also features a visitor center, hiking trails, food concessions, and a campground. To book a spot on a tour and for more information, visit FWP.MT.gov/StateParks/Lewis-and-Clark-Caverns.

Travel Back in Time

Many towns in Montana offer guided historical tours. Bozeman’s Extreme History Project, AdventureThroughTime.org, leads you through historic neighborhoods and cemeteries, thrilling you with stories about the town’s seedy and creepy past. Unseen Missoula, MissoulaDowntown.com/UnseenMissoula, brings you to hidden spots rarely seen by locals. Old Butte Historical Adventures, ButteTour.info, takes you to the dank cells of the old jail where Butte’s native son, Evel Knievel, scrawled his name in the stone wall after a raucous night on the town. One of the most unique tours in Montana is Havre Beneath the Streets, HavreBeneathTheStreets.com. In 1904 three men set fire to town after being thrown out of a bar. They took their revenge by setting a fire that destroyed 60 buildings. Instead of packing up, the industrious townsfolk made the decision to move commerce to the massive steam tunnels that ran below the sidewalks. The tour lets you explore this underground city where businesses like Boone’s Drug Store, Wright’s Dentist Office, and Sporting Eagle Saloon sit frozen in time.

Nobody Gets Out Alive

ARTICLE BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO

Leigh Newman's fictional debut story collection Author Leigh Newman is a delectable treat for any reader but specifically for those like us: wilderness dwellers. While her fictional debut story collection Nobody Gets Out Alive is set in Alaska, her rich depth of perspective and personal experience in this vast jewel of a place is what grounds us—and her characters—throughout the entire collection. For anyone who has read her memoir, Still Points North, this story collection is seemingly a fictional sequel to the grandiose theme of survival—something that we Northwesterners often refer to in a physical sense due to our population of grizzly bears, mountain lions, and moose among other fanged or big-bodied creatures. In her memoir, Leigh explores her surroundings for all of us to see and feel. When she gasps, we gasp. And Nobody Gets Out Alive is true to that tone but sets out on several different journeys of survival only to circle back to one shivering discovery: that survival isn' the end game. Her steadfast loyalty to the wilderness we all find ourselves in—physically and emotionally—creates the perfect canvas for each character to manipulate, and when layered one on top of the other, we feel new versions of Alaska come alive in our hands. Leigh brings all of a woman's complexities to the forefront with equal parts softness and pugnacity. Her characters are not too hardshelled by their state of residence nor by their life experience for us to snag small, beautiful moments of sharp truth. Leigh lends us just enough details about their pasts to suspend our disbelief that these women are indeed our mothers, sisters, daughters, or friends. Their decorative worlds are so expertly articulated and Alaska itself starts to feel like a character who morphs from one story to the next. These tales about women trudging through the difficult landscape of a male-dominated Alaskan society remind us of our stark reality: that nobody gets out alive. There is no first class seat that avoids the turbulence of divorce, abuse, secrets, family, or friendships. In fact, despite our level of comfort with flying, we're all aboard the puddle jumper because these pages are the great Alaskan adventure and there isn't another way to get there.

In March of 2020, the PEAK Health & Wellness club temporarily shut its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was where Crit and I worked out three days a week. Without the facility, we decided we would hike in and around Missoula instead. Crit and I met at the PEAK and have worked out for many years, and we have another common interest: photography. We have completed 100 weekly hikes over two years and photographed flowers, scenes, birds, wildlife, and anything that interests us. I send out a report of each hike with four to six pictures titled “Walk in the Woods” to 30 or more people throughout the states and three foreign countries. One recipient writes,

“I love how you take pictures of the ordinary and they look so extraordinary. It’s a good reminder to me that beauty is everywhere, all the time. And your narratives just make the photos even more special. Thanks for sharing.” Missoulians are lucky to have so many varied trails to suit any hiker. Crit and I have hiked trails in the Rattlesnake, on Mount Jumbo, on Blue Mountain, north and south of Pattee Canyon Road, along the Bitterroot River, up Waterworks Hill, and around the Fort in all kinds of weather. In the spring, the nodding onion and butterflies show up all over the woods. The Pasque flowers and the Prairie Smoke flowers are found in the high meadow above Sawmill Gulch and are spectacular. The Prairie Smoke is an interesting plant as it nods in flower and then the stem lifts and the seeds burst forth in an upright position, thus the smoke name. The Indian Paintbrush is in full

bloom everywhere. The Great White Trillium brighten the forest floor. If you hike Waterworks Hill this time of year, look for the Bitterroot flowers—Montana’s state flower and a complete showstopper. Take time and look low on the forest floor. You might find Lady Slippers hiding there. When we stop for a water break, a brief rest, or when we turn around to head home, we find hidden flowers and other things like sap drips that we would’ve missed if we were too hurried. The woods and the meadows are alive and enjoyable in the spring, so get out and enjoy the many trails around Missoula as we will continue to do. Ron Russell is a United States Forest Service retiree who’s been a lifetime photographer since the early age of high school. He is 85 years old.

Let the Dog Be Your Guide ARTICLE BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA SPAULDING

Dogs are the best tour guides. Do they know where they're going? No. Is there a chance they could lead you completely astray over the simple scent of another animal? Yes. There is no one more unapologetic than a dog in search of adventure, and maybe we have something to learn from their enthusiasm for a good sniff in the great outdoors. We hope to see you out on the trails with your pawed pal leading the way. Much love from the Missoula Valley Lifestyle dog crew: Doakes, Piper, Derby, Norm, Onyx, Timber, and River.
