LIFESTYLE LETTER
July – Our Summer Fun and Adventure Issue Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax! Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. Some of our favorite summertime activities we enjoy are going out for icecream with the kids, eating al fresco in and nearby towns, discovering new day and weekend trips, going down the shore to LBI and reconnecting with great friends. In this issue, we wanted to share fun local ways to get out and explore together, from local best places to eat outdoors, to a great nearby daytrip to Grounds for Sculpture. As Independence Day comes around, it is our privilege to shine a light on local veterans in our community and to thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life to protect others. We want to thank all veterans, those still serving and all their loved ones for your service. We hope you can enjoy some of the many things our wonderful towns offer during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love. If you have interesting, fun, and meaningful stories to share or are a business looking to grow within our community and the surrounding area, we would love to hear from you. Contact John.Meyer@citylifestyle.com for advertising opportunities and Ana.Meyer@citylifestyle.com for editorials or call us at 973-944-1440. Happy 4th of July! OUTDOOR DINING GUIDE ARTICLE BY ANA MEYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA, PROVIDED
The Best Places for Outdoor Summer Dining and Fun!
There are a lot of great places to dine outdoors in our area, in town, and out of town. From coffee shops to bars, and restaurants. I’ve put together a list of my favorites and what makes them special from Millburn to Morristown, they are a short drive away! Enjoy!
Calabria’s in Livingston, NJ: Calabria’s is the largest pizzeria in the area and have the bragging rights of having their famous thin crust “crunchy thin pizza”, have an 8.9 Barstool rating, making it top 3 in NJ and top 1% in the country! They also have a full bar and extensive Italian menu, so whatever you’re in the mood for, they have it here. Family owned for over 40 years, these kind entrepreneurs have donated over 10,000+ family meals that feed a family of four, to needy families and first responders impacted by the pandemic during the past two years. Their outdoor dining area reminds me of a Palladian Villa in Italy. So, if you’re in the mood for an “out of this world pizza” and beer or wine, while dining outdoors, feeling like you’re in Italy, stop by Calabria’s. calabrias.com

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Town Bar + Kitchen in Morristown: Secluded from the street, is a wonderful rooftop outdoor dining area away from the crowds. It was the first place I dined for lunch with a friend during the pandemic, with outdoor heaters in the colder months. No heaters needed in the summer! You will be embraced by the original brick of the building, anchored with a beautiful outdoor fireplace that make it feel cozy anywhere you sit. Enjoy the evening sunset while you sip on a signature cocktail. Their creative chef prepared menu and full bar will leave you wanting to come back! They offer seasonal drinks and treats which include for the summer, a “Kiwi Cocktail” and their famous “Cookie Monster” dessert. townbarandkitchen.com

Delikositas
Casa Das Natas
La Pergola in Millburn, NJ: La Pergola has the most adorable and largest outdoor garden dining area, hidden behind the restaurant, away from the noise of cars and people walking by. It is like you are dining in a garden in Tuscany, Italy! You are surrounded by shade and greenery, where you can feel the soft breeze and listen to the sound of nature while listening to Botticelli’s music. The food is to die for, freshly made to order, offering delicious seasonal menus from farm to table, using the freshest ingredients available for the season. It’s great place to dine during the week and weekends. Be sure to bring your favorite wine or spirit and say hello to the owners, Driola and Agron Kaloshi. La Pergola is BYOB. lapergolanj.com
Delikositas in Madison: Be adventurous and try Colombian cuisine at Delikositas where you can enjoy authentic Colombian empanadas, made from “Yucca” dough, savory “Pan de Queso” cheese bread, or “Buñuelos” and if you are really hungry, ask for the signature meal “Bandeja Paisa” which offers steak, with beans and white rice, eggs, “chicharron” and avocado. Enjoy cold beverages, like Mango or imported soda pop drinks, all while dining outdoors under umbrellas that will keep you cool, while you people watch and enjoy the vibe Madison has to offer. Owned and operated by two Madison residents, Delikositas brings Colombian flavors to you. delikositas.com
Millie’s Old-World Meatballs
Casa Das Natas
& Pizza in Morristown:
in Millburn, NJ:
Millie’s has the broadest meatball selection in our area, with a choice of sauces and stuffing’s, you will be sure to find something that you will like. The size of a serving is two, fairly large, about the size of a baseball. Millie’s has two outdoor dining spaces, one that is covered within the restaurant footprint, so you can enjoy the outdoors and dine on a rainy day. The other is on the sidewalk under beautiful rust orange-colored umbrellas, so you can enjoy their full menu, including wood fire oven roasted oysters and pizza fully outdoors. Millie’s is also BYOB. milliesoldworld.com
I love this place! You can experience a traditional Portuguese café serving classic pastries and savory Portuguese delights, coffee, and Portuguese beverages in Millburn. The owner has a farm, with over 35+ chicken, and she uses these fresh eggs to make the popular Portuguese custard cups called “pasties de nata”. You can also enjoy a warm savory “rissois”, it’s like a Portuguese empanada, expect the dough is very different and the filling as well. You can have a shrimp, chicken or beef rissois with Portuguese coffee or cold Portuguese drink. Candida’s outdoor dining in front of her café, where you can enjoy the fresh air, while listening to Portuguese music and bring your dog. Casa Das Natas is pet friendly! casadasnatasnj.com

House of Dezign, which opened in Chatham last year, is focused on bringing out the creativity of fashion-minded children, teens and adults. “I’ve created a safe place for everybody to express themselves however they want,” says owner Roya Ranjbar. “Our creativity belongs to us and we should be able to express it as we like.” A wide range of classes are available - all the way from basic beginner to super advanced. Some of the skills taught include tailoring garments, designing and making patterns, draping fabrics, and learning the basics of sewing machines and digital design programs. At the end of the classes, students can show off their creations on the “runway.” “We have boys and girls and men and women in the classes,” says Roya. “We have young children, but we also have experienced designers coming in from New York City to take our classes. In addition, we have portfolio classes for teens before they enter college. We just became partners with Montclair Fashion School, so we bring in interns. I’m also invited to speak and teach their students how to pitch their major.” This summer, House of Dezign will be offering camps and workshops once again. Each weekly session is focused on a particular skill, so students can take multiple sessions during the summer to gain a wellrounded design education. They can then continue on with additional classes all year round. CONTINUED >

All classes are overseen by Roya, and the instructors are experts in the fashion industry. There are multiple instructors per class in order for students to have plenty of one-on-one attention. Each student is given a project and a goal. The talents acquired in the classes are life skills, but the benefits go far beyond that. Students increase self-confidence, gain self-esteem, and develop a sense of accomplishment. Roya finds it exciting to watch the students’ skills emerge and grow. “I just love it!” she says. “You have no idea.” One online reviewer, C. Henning, commented, “My daughter absolutely loves it. Great introduction to the world of fashion. Clean, friendly, professional and trustworthy. My daughter is learning so much and enhancing her creativity level.” With seven years of university training in fashion design and after owning her own design company, Roya wants to share her knowledge and love of fashion with others, “I realized how much I knew, and I should really pass it on to new generations,” she says. During the week, the studio offers night events, such as Sip and Sew, and on Sundays, private events, such as birthdays and bachelorette parties, can be held. What a fun way to spend time with friends and family! To find out more, and enroll in a class, camp or workshop, go to houseofdezign.com. Learn how to express your creativity!

Before you even get to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, you’ll see incredible art sculptures along the local roads. It’s a tantalizing introduction for what you’ll see when you arrive at the 42-acre property. Walking around the beautiful gardens is a pleasure in itself, but being able to view magnificent sculptures at the same time is a truly unique experience. While many of the over 300 pieces of art throughout the property are out in the open, others may be a little harder, and fun, to find. Off the main walkway you may see a little path and wonder, “What’s down that way?” It may be a sculpture of people having a picnic by a small pond, and in that pond you’ll see a sculpture of a boat and some ducks. More hidden paths lead to other delightful finds. “That sense of discovery and surprise is such a big part of how the garden was designed,” says Executive Director, Gary Garrido Schneider. “There are quiet areas of contemplation, but then there's the awe of something spectacularly big and unexpected.” It’s said that the ponds by the Van Gogh Cafe and gazebo are full of sacred lotus. When in bloom, they are just glorious. The garden is welcoming all year round when the spring and summer flowers are in full bloom and when the leaves are bursting with colors in the fall. Wintertime has its own picturesque beauty. “This year, the real showstopper is our indoor exhibitions of ceramic work,” he says. “Located in one of our galleries, it focuses on ceramics as a social medium. We have a solo show - Roberto Lugo: The Village Potter. Lugo’s a very well-regarded ceramicist, who has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and museums around the country. He’s a Puerto Rican artist who is known for making very large-scale pottery vessels that incorporate historic Black and Latino figures including civil rights leaders, popular culture, musicians, et cetera.” Grounds for Sculpture supported Lugo in creating a 20-foot tall vessel. It looks like a ceramic vessel, but it's actually made out of other materials. Visitors can go inside, climb the stairs, and actually become part of the artwork themselves. Many of the sculptures stay the same, but others are changed out occasionally, so frequent visitors can still see their favorites, but there’s always something new to see too. Its Domestic Arts and museum buildings each have one exhibition a year and the Education Gallery changes its exhibitions seasonally. Another popular draw are the peacocks. “I think they add to that sense of wonder,” says Gary. “They're showy animals, and they love all the attention they get.” Strolling around the gardens for hours may work up an appetite. Along with two cafes for light fare and beverages, its upscale restaurant Rats offers fine cuisine for both lunch and dinner.

Due to the popularity of Grounds for Sculpture, timed tickets have to be reserved in advance. However, if you’re a member, you can come anytime at no additional cost throughout the year, and also receive discounts in the store as well as discounts at the café and restaurants. Members also get invited to special events. “We're a nonprofit, so membership also supports us,” he says. There are also a full range of programs offered, including many wellness workshops. Members receive discounts on these courses as well. Private events, such as weddings and birthday parties, can also be held on the property. To plan your visit, go to www.groundsforsculpture.org.

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.
