A Look into one of Murfreesboro’s Oldest Businesses for Family Fun
LOCAL LOVE: A SPOTLIGHT ON OUR LOCAL PARTNERS
I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season.
To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community.
While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community.
“Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Brasshorn and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Arrington Vineyards and some of the fine selections from TN Craft Butcher and indulge on a movie night in.
We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month.
Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like.
Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before.
Happy February!

MTSU PRIDES ITSELF ON ITS SMALLTOWN FEEL, AFFORDABILITY AND COMMITMENT TO STUDENTS
ARTICLE BY DEANN HAYS
Founded September 11, 1911, Middle Tennessee State University is proud of its more than 110-year commitment to academic excellence and student success. A large regional university with a national reputation, MTSU is a top choice for transfer students, veterans and adult learners in Tennessee.
“For more than a century, so many have come to MTSU to find purpose and direction and to change the trajectory of their

lives for the better,” said MTSU President Dr. Sidney A. McPhee. “We provide unparalleled opportunities to students from all walks of life.”
MTSU is located on more than 500 acres and offers more than 300 programs of study and hundreds of student organizations and clubs. It's also the largest contributor to the workforce in Middle Tennessee, with over 70% of its graduates remaining in the state.
With more than $1.5 billion invested in new and remodeled infrastructure in the
last decade, students benefit from stateof-the-art facilities and resources that can't be matched.
From an agriculture lab minutes away from campus to new state-of-the-art recording studios to a multimillion-dollar School of Concrete and Construction Management building, MTSU has it all.
While it boasts around 20,000 students, MTSU prides itself on its small-town feel.
“Serving the Middle Tennessee area is a core component of the university.”
"We pride ourselves in providing as much personal attention to students as possible, so they don't feel like a number or get lost in the crowd," said University Registrar Dr. Tyler Henson.
In its dedication to student success, the university developed initiatives that ensure every student who comes to MTSU with drive will receive the best instruction from professors and services from administrators.
MT One Stop is a one-stop shop where students can get help with enrollment, registration, financial aid, billing, transcripts, etc. Students and potential students can
schedule appointments or meet with enrollment coordinators virtually.
MTSU also offers free tutoring, a student food pantry, counseling services and more.
"Students have enough to worry about on a daily basis, so anywhere we can cut down on their time and stress, we like to do so," Henson said.
In 2024, for a sixth consecutive year, MTSU was named one of the top 389 universities in the United States by The Princeton Review.
The university also ranked among America’s best by The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and U.S. News and World Report.
When interviewed by The Princeton Review, students said:
• MTSU takes the time to "foster an environment of care for each and every student."
• The campus is big but "feels like a comfortable and home-like school…"
• "At a school as large as MTSU, you see all types (of students) from different ends of the spectrum."
• "No matter who they are," people at MTSU are "extremely friendly and inclusive."
As one of the most affordable universities across Tennessee, MTSU's tuition is just under $10,000 per year for full-time, in-state students. More than 75% of students receive financial aid, 53% of students graduate debt-free, and 1 in 6 graduates in the greater Nashville area are MTSU alums, making the university the top provider to the region's workforce. Since its founding, MTSU has awarded 187,700 degrees.
"MTSU offers a fantastic opportunity for people in Middle Tennessee to get a worldclass education in their own backyard. Keeping tuition affordable is key to that opportunity and important to the local economy because so many of our students stay local once they graduate," Henson said. "We have students who come from all over the world, but serving the Middle Tennessee area is a core component of the university. It's important to ensure getting an education at MTSU is accessible to those who live here."

Endless outdoor adventures await you - right here in your own backyard in Murfreesboro!
No one can ever say that there is “nothing to do here” if you live in Murfreesboro. The Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation team continuously works to create new and innovative programming that adds to and enhances the community we live in – there is always something happening.
One way to stay updated on all the things to help you stay active outside is to check out Outdoor Murfreesboro. This division of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation includes caring for animals at the Wilderness Station, nurturing the native plant population, creating volunteer opportunities – as well as the Greenway, Barfield Back Country Trails, hiking, kayaking and more.
According to Ethan Kreuziger, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator, people are often surprised about what his job actually entails. “Most people we talk with the first time they visit are really shocked at all the programs we offer,” stated Ethan. “Outside of the Wilderness Station and all the cool things we offer there, we also have cave exploring, kayaking, archery and camping excursions.” He also shared that one of his favorite programs is the Creek Snorkeling. “I grew up swimming in local waterways, using only my pool goggles searching for all the hidden critters we don’t often see. Tennessee has some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, so there are hundreds of different animals you can find – and we help you with that.”
Along with our planned programs, there is also so much to do with the more than 17 miles of Greenway space. Whether you are walking, running, biking or fishing – there is always something new to see since the outdoor landscape changes from season to season. We also have the Greenway 100 program, which encourages you to track your miles spent on the Greenway and rewards you once you hit 100 miles with a t-shirt, sticker decal, and bragging rights. For all the details, visit www.MurfreesboroParks. com and enjoy living in a city that ensures the great outdoors is never far away.

ARTICLE BY MATILYN JENNINGS PHOTOGRAPHY BY GO USA FUN PARK
For over 35 years, GO USA Fun Park has been a cornerstone of family entertainment in Murfreesboro. Founded by Curt Abdo and now co-run with his son Alex, the park represents a rich history of resilience, evolution, and connection with the community.
Curt's journey into entertainment began in the mid1970s with Family Billiards, a chain of arcades in Middle Tennessee. Over the years, his family ventured into various businesses, from tanning salons to game manufacturing. However, it was the launch of Golf U.S.A. in 1988—a driving range, mini-golf course, and golf shop—that laid the foundation for GO USA Fun Park.
“The first few years were tough,” Curt recalls. “We eventually pivoted, transforming the business into GO USA Fun Park by adding attractions like batting cages, go-karts, and an expanded arcade while phasing out the golf shop.”
Alex adds a fun detail about the rebrand: “To save money on signage, we simply removed the ‘L’ and ‘F’ from ‘Golf U.S.A.’— you can still see where the letters used to be on our sign!”
From a small mini-golf course and arcade to a bustling hub of family fun, GO USA has continually adapted to meet changing customer interests. The addition of hightech attractions like VR experiences and flight simulators reflects its commitment to staying current.
“We’ve moved from tokens and tickets to a single ‘play card’ system, which makes everything much easier,” Alex says. “We also constantly rotate prizes and upgrade our redemption center based on customer preferences. Introducing trendy prizes like Pokémon cards and PlayStation 5s has been a big hit.”
GO USA is deeply intertwined with the Murfreesboro community. Curt fondly remembers the city’s transformation from a quiet college town to a thriving hub. “We’ve watched generations grow up with us—kids who came here are now bringing their own children,” he shares.
For Alex, the sense of continuity is profound. “It’s amazing to see people with such fond memories of GO USA. It’s a testament to how long we’ve been a part of their lives.”
Running a small business isn’t without challenges. From starting with significant debt to weathering recessions and the pandemic, GO USA has faced its share of obstacles. “We’ve always operated with the mindset that nothing is guaranteed,” Curt says. “That resilience, coupled with prioritizing our staff, has helped us get through tough times.”
During the pandemic, the park retained its entire staff, a decision reflecting their commitment to people. “Taking care of our team is central to who we are,” Curt emphasizes.
With decades of memories, some stand out to Curt and Alex: three marriages between staff members, a third generation of employees, and stories of families returning year after year. “Last summer, we hired the son of one of my favorite former employees— it’s moments like these that make it all worthwhile,” Curt says. Curt and Alex also share that the business could not be what it is today without the help of Jared Vaupel, the general manager and family member. "He's been a pivotal part of our success," said Alex.
GO USA is dedicated to supporting local organizations. From donating mini-golf vouchers to schools to hosting food trucks
and spirit nights, they actively engage with the community. “We’re always looking for creative ways to give back,” Alex says.
The park’s future is bright, with big plans under the banner of "Gopher Vision 2030." Upcoming projects include an improved driving range with ball tracking, a new event pavilion, dual-pit go-karts, and more seasonal events like Halloween-themed mini-golf.
“We’re thinking big,” Alex says. “Our goal is to continue evolving while staying true to what has made us special for so long.”
Before spring, the team plans to enhance the go-kart experience by introducing dual-pit tracks, allowing for twice as many rides per hour. They’re also working on updating their website to better showcase upcoming events and improvements. As the busy season approaches, they aim to bring more variety to visitors with weekend food truck options on Fridays and Saturdays and expand their unlimited play offerings, building on the popular unlimited go-kart and mini-golf packages already available.
This Valentine's Day, the park will have a Sweetheart Special for those who want to have a fun and memorable day with their significant other.

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.
USE THIS GUIDE WHEN ORDERING VALENTINE’S DAY BOUQUETS
Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.
Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.
A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will complement the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.
