ach year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” Records tell us that approximately 150 million cards are exchanged annually on this day of romance we call Valentine's Day, making it the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.
This issue has a feature story about Leslie and Dino Cancellieri, who certainly personify true love, as they met and married very young–and that was 47 years ago! And, of course, Valentine's Day brings to mind presents for loved ones, and jewelry and watches come to mind. Our "Buyer's Guide to High Luxury Jewelry," authored by Kyle Roderick, highlights some of the best in the business. Chocolate is always a great gift, for as Deirdre Michalski says in her "Defining Romance" article, "Chocolate Equals love. No. Chocolate IS love."

The highly successful program for at-risk children facing adversity, now in its 11th year, matches a volunteer high school “Big” with an elementary school “Little.” The “Bigs” provide age-appropriate peer-to-peer mentoring once a week after school. The Angelitos Card one-week fundraiser featured 115 boutiques and restaurants participating in the effort by offering 20% savings when the Angelitos Festival of Children Founder/Executive Director Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, third from left, poses with the five ALNM volunteer riders, from left, Tracy Halphide, past President Judy Weightman, Loren Blackwood, President Karen Treaccar, and Wendy Braun

RIDING CAROUSEL BENEFITS NONPROFITS The King Arthur Carrousel at Disneyland was extremely busy recently when it was used for raising money by local nonprofits serving children, among them the Assistance League of Newport Mesa (ALNM). Dubbed “Carousel of Possible Dreams,” the event was hosted by the Festival of Children Foundation, which underwrote the costs of the effort. The idea was to have representatives from each of the 43 participating charities ask for pledges to ride the carousel 50 times. Five designated riders from ALNM mounted the painted ponies and did their part (see photo). The total funds raised was an impressive $615,587, with each of the nonprofits receiving 100% of the funds raised through their pledges. For ALNM, it was more than $6,500. his recipe is nearly as easy as a pot roast but much more impressive! One of the most difficult things for novice cooks to do is actually shop for ingredients, and this recipe
solves that problem. The ingredients are “tweaked,” so that it is super-simple and easy to remember, using lots of “ones”- one cup, one can, one teaspoon, one pound. A can of beef stock, a cup of red wine and a cup of all the veggies. The other thing which non-cooks hate is a ton of “prep” work. This recipe eliminates most of that, with the exception of dusting the beef in flour, so that you have an easy, one-pot entrée ready in an hour! INGREDIENTS:

J
azz up a simple pre-packaged cake mix with this elegant, impressive strawberry cream cheese frosting. The slightly tart cream cheese perfectly contrasts the sweet-
ness of the brownie, making it a perfect dessert for a perfect Valentine night! INGREDIENTS:
1 box (16.5 ounces) Red Velvet Cake Mix ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk ¾ cup canola oil 2 eggs Frosting Ingredients: 2/3 cup fresh strawberries 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, cubed (room temperature) 1 stick butter, cubed 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 cups powdered sugar DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place cake mix in a large bowl; stir in condensed milk, oil and eggs. (Batter will be stiff). Spray mini-muffin tin (or standard cupcake tin, as desired) with nonstick spray. Fill muffin cavities about 2/3 full with batter. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. Cool completely. For frosting: Place strawberries in a small bowl; process in food processor until almost smooth. Set aside. Place butter in medium bowl; beat with electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy. Slowly add cream cheese; beat until well-combined. Reduce speed to low; slowly add powdered sugar. Mix well. Stir in vanilla and 4 tablespoons of strawberries. If a deeper pink color is desired, add red food coloring to desired color. Place frosting in refrigerator until well-chilled. Frost brownies just prior to serving. Store in refrigerator. Yield: 24 mini-brownie servings. Per serving: Calories: 84; Fat 0.8g; Carbs: 9.2g; Protein 0.9g. Cost Per Serving: $.85. ’m in love,” moans my husband as he reclines back in satisfaction. While I wish these doting words were directed at me, the aroma inducing his blissful smile surely is not my new eau de perfume; I can tell that with each savory bite of his rib eye, it’s apparent that my husband is sweet-talking the steak. I can’t really blame him. Newport Beach’s A Restaurant is A Restaurant today known for its prime cuts. When founding partner and Corona del Mar native McG took over the current A Restaurant space in 2006, he knew that this project was going to be a labor of love. The restaurant had indelible history. Originally, the building housed The Arches, a longstanding Newport Beach institution that doubled first as a diner and a service station. As McG and Otterbein gear up to celebrate the space’s 90th anniversary in March, it’s refreshing to see that A Restaurant continues to exude an old school cool, befitting of the Rat Pack. While the décor remains classically retro, the food is up-to-date and modern. “The menu needs to stay relevant,” says Otterbein. A delicate calamari starter sings with charred Shishito peppers and pickled caper berries. “We give the chef total creative freedom when it comes to the food,” he continues. “And, I know we can trust the chef completely.” Otterbein then mentions artichokes. “It’s a dish usually on the menu. But, the chef hasn’t found any that meet his standards. So, we haven’t served artichokes in weeks.” This mention of Blackford’s restraint is refreshing. Especially since I recall an experience just a week before when I dined at another PCH hotspot where the artichokes were tough and inedible. Ingredients of the highest quality are key to the restaurant’s success. The cheese and charcuterie boards include some of Steak in herb the world’s most beloved butter with artisan creations. A soft petite head of ripened goat cheese called roasted garlic Humboldt Fog with its bloomy rind comes served with warm honeycomb that melts as it spreads on lightly toasted croûtes. The charcuterie ranges from white truffle Berkshire pork salumi to classic two-year aged prosciutto. The Ibérico de Bellota, touted as the finest ham in the world, is an unctuously delicious import from Spain. Forged from black-hoofed, acorn-fed Ibérico pigs, this delicately sliced pork exudes a subtle sweetness, which balances well with the ham’s salty curing process. Other main courses include the delightful ocean trout that appears with a bright pink-hue and looks more like salmon than trout. The freerange veal porterhouse must not have been up to snuff on the night we dined, since the chef swapped it for a juicy, well-seasoned pork chop. The thick slab of pork still pairs well with the porterhouse garnishes. I devour the smooth white truffle-laced potato puree plated beneath the chop. The food and ambience encourage diners to linger away the evening. The servers at A Restaurant are knowledgeable without being pretentious; helpful without seeming invasive; and confident without sounding arrogant. This comes through when we dine on a blustery Sunday evening speckled with light raindrops. Our server, Steven, doubles as the sommelier. As he glides around the dining room, Steven gently inserts himself into the neighboring table’s boisterous conversation with a few witty, well-placed jests. He refills their wine glasses and then heads to our table. “I already know the perfect wine for your steak,” he says to my husband. “Trust me.” He returns with a spicy Malbec blend. The wine’s peppery notes offset the steak’s rich flavor. “He was right,” confirms my husband. “Tell the chef: Another great steak,” says one gentleman to Steven. “I’m never disappointed.” A Restaurant, 3334 West Coast Highway, Newport Beach, 949.650.6505 :: ARestaurantNB.com

Buyer’s Guide to
Exquisite Jewelry and Watches for Valentine's Day ARTICLE KYLE RODERICK
E
xquisite jewelry and great timepieces can create a chic aura around the person who wears them, but why? How to account
for jewelry’s magical effects? Why are some of us so magnetically attracted to great jewels and watches?
Tourmaline statement earrings from Chris Davies feature his proprietary woven granulation technique that glitters with 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold beads.
“Jewelry and timepieces symbolize enduring mysteries of Beauty, Love and Time,” says Hutton Wilkinson, the designer and owner of Beverly Hills-based heritage brand Tony Duquette. “When you give, wear or admire jewelry, you celebrate the mystery of Creation with someone you love, and with the world.” Wilkinson does have a point. Precious metals are the result of meteorite bombardments that occurred 200 million years after Earth was formed, and gemstones are created over millennia under intense pressures deep within the earth. This year, celebrate your love and communion with Creation by giving jewels and/or watches created by one of the following heritage brands or high luxury designers.

Digital Housekeeping—
Dealing With Too Much Email ARTICLE DENIS RIVAS
E
very time I watch an episode of Hoarders, I am prompted to clean out the physical clutter from my home and office. As a technology coach, I often see how people can be overwhelmed by what I’ll politely call “over-storage” of emails. Having virtual and visual clutter in an email inbox can make one’s computing time unproductive and frustrating. Digital housekeeping can be extremely liberating. The goal: To set up a system where you receive a manageable amount of email that is relevant to you, store and retrieve what you need and delete the rest. Consider your email account to be like a running bathtub, which could overflow if left unattended. Slow the Flow. The inbox is like a running faucet, with new mail arriving constantly. How you slow the flow depends on who is sending the mail to you. • Known senders include companies you’ve done business with or whose mailing list you signed up for (perhaps without realizing it). Reputable companies will include an unsubscribe option. It’s more effective to unsubscribe from these than to mark them as junk or spam, since companies often sell their mailing lists to others. Start with the most recent ones you’ve received. For each one, decide whether you’re ready to unsubscribe, and if so, click the unsubscribe link (usually found at the bottom), following the instructions carefully on any web page that link takes you to. If not, you can often just reduce the frequency or fine-tune the topics you want to be emailed about.
40
Newport Beach Lifestyle | February 2016
• Unknown senders, which include spammers (Rolex watches, anyone?), usually include no unsubscribe link, and even when they do, you should not click it, since it may lead to malware or phishing attempts. Your best bet when it comes to unknown senders is to mark them as junk/spam, but don’t expect miracles. Spammers will keep trying! Drain the Bathtub – out with the old! All major email providers and programs have a feature for finding all email from a particular sender, which you can use to locate and delete at least the oldest ones. Have a Bucket Handy. By bucket, we mean a filing system. Set up folders to file messages that you may need to retrieve later, like coupons or receipts. If you decide to stay on a mailing list, consider setting up a rule or filter that automatically sweeps that sender’s emails into a special folder, where you can find them when you need them. Each email provider has a unique technique for this. Going Forward. Be careful when signing up at new websites or purchasing online. There is often a checkbox for “Subscribe me to the ABC Company’s newsletter” or “Send me special offers from ABC Company.” Uncheck it if you aren’t interested. he Mazda MX-5 (originally called the Miata) has long been the personification of driving fun and the fourth-generation 2016 model continues to be just that. The original MX-5 Miata, introduced in 1989, was the reincarnation of a British sports car and more than 950,000 have been sold worldwide. According to Mazda, the all-new 2016 is lighter, smaller, quicker and more nimble than its predecessor. The wheelbase is nearly one inch shorter and curb weight is 2,332 pounds. Mazda says that increased use of high-tensile steel and careful attention to reducing even the slightest amount of weight with every component resulted in a total weight reduction of 150 pounds. There are three models: Sport, Club and Grand Touring. Sport starts at $24,915, Club at $28,600 and Grand Touring at $30,065. The test vehicle was the Club model with the optional Brembo/BBS package of 17inch BBS wheels and Brembo front brakes. The Club model also has a limited-slip differential on manual transmission models, Bilstein shocks, a shock tower brace and a
front air dam and rear lip spoiler. The base price was $28,600. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine delivers 155 horsepower, 12 less than the previous model. It would seem that fewer horsepower would hurt performance, but the car felt as quick and energetic as ever, helped by the lighter weight. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy is up considerably, too. The manual transmission model is rated at 27 miles per gallon in the city and 34 on the highway. That’s exceptional. Driven vigorously, the MX-5 feels as though it is glued to your hips. The engine has been moved down and back for better handling. The steering is light and direct, and the car pivots around corners so precisely that it almost feels telepathic, thanks in large measure to a 50-50 weight distribution and low center of gravity. Slide into the MX-5 and the cockpit definitely feels small. Folks over six feet tall are likely to be cramped. The pedals are tightly grouped and getting in and out can be chal-
lenging, especially for aging enthusiasts. The stubby gearshift is next to the driver’s right hand and changing gears is as simple as rocking your wrist. Dropping the manual top is a matter of undoing a central latch and pulling it back into folded position behind the seats. It is most easily done outside of the car, but can be done from inside. On the highway, the cloth top reverberated so loudly that I could hardly stand to drive more than 65 miles per hour. The previous MX-5 was available with a power folding hard top, but one is not offered on the 2016. A folding hard top would add weight but it would make the car much more suitable for highway use. Mazda’s infotainment system has a seven-inch color touchscreen display. It is operated with voice commands or a multi-function command dial on the console. Standard items include HD radio, two USB inputs, smart keyless entry, a Bosenine-speaker audio system with headrest-mounted speakers and Sirius satellite radio. The interface of the optional, dealer-installed navigation system was not nearly as intuitive as most smartphones. The MX-5 may be 26 years old but it acts like teenager. PRICE
The base price of the Club model is $28,600. The test car was equipped with navigation and the Brembo/BBS package of 17-inch wheels, Brembo front brakes, painted brake calipers, side sill extensions and a rear bumper skirt. The sticker price was $33,170. WARRANTY
Three years or 36,000 miles with a fiveyear, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. POINT: The
redesigned MX-5 still has the soul of a pure sports car. The new body is attractive, fuel economy is improved and handling is just as good as ever. COUNTERPOINT: The MX-5 is slightly smaller than the previous model and the cabin felt crowded. The cloth top is quite noisy at highway speeds.

does baking soda whiten teeth? Baking soda is a common household product that has many uses around the home, from eliminating smells to cleaning carpets. Now, baking soda can be found in many toothpastes and teeth-whitening products. Using it to remove stains from teeth is common practice. It does an excellent job at removing surface stains, but you should proceed with caution to prevent damage to your enamel.

home remedies to whiten teeth
For a healthier way to whiten your teeth you will need to see a dentist to use a product that was specifically created for whitening teeth. Our office can create whitening trays that are used in combination with carbamide peroxide gel, a take home method where you can brighten your smile at your convenience. For patients that have never bleached before, we offer an In Office Bleaching method where results may be seen in an hour!
How can a simple mixture of equal parts baking soda and water whiten teeth? Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is composed of a chemical compound that makes it a great mild abrasive. It is this same abrasiveness that effectively removes surface stains from your teeth and makes them appear whiter temporarily. However, if your goal is to remove deeper, older stains, then baking soda will not be effective.
If you’re considering using this method to help whiten your teeth, you need to be aware of possible side effects. Using this method, you will cause damage to the enamel that coats your teeth. Some will mix baking soda with Strawberries. This fruit is highly acidic and will cause damage to your enamel.

Romance Defining
WORDS DEIRDRE MICHALSKI
C
andy equals love. Or, so I thought. When I was in second grade, Kirk Fyson placed a box of candy on my desk with a handwritten note wishing me a Happy Valentine’s Day. I was smitten. I fondled each heart-shaped morsel while re-reading the messages in a whisper. Flipping them back and forth with my fingers, I would eventually consume them and my mouth would turn bright pink. Be mine. Love you. Kiss me. I recited them over and over in my head. Meanwhile, all the classroom activity around me remained just a muffled blur. I was in love. My candy told me so. Growing up, my Valentine’s Days had very mixed reviews. It morphed into funny cards, handmade cards, photo collages, boxes of candy and a few lovely flower arrangements. Romantic dinners and dancing were a joy. Dressing up was my favorite part. And yes, indeed, some February 14th’s were a complete disappointment. A break-up just prior to the big day was an instant deflator, or the flu would hit, or some forgetful moron I was dating would go surfing and completely forget the date entirely. Needless to say, he was instantly off the list. Fast forward to today, and, indeed, my husband is very thoughtful. He showers me with flowers and cards and even makes the dinner reservation all by himself for our evening out on the town. We often return to the restaurant where we had our first blind date. We glide right past the table where we dined that very first evening, and we smile and squeeze each other’s hand. It is fraught with wonderful memories for both of us. After being wined and dined, a precious box magically appears on the table. And, just like the blue box, I know exactly what is inside. I anticipate it every year. It contains the most decadent dark chocolate turtles by Valenza Chocolatier. Large pecans anchor the gooey, rich caramel, and I can just picture the warm dark chocolate that was drizzled on top, overflowing along the sides. One bite and I am so gone. Chocolate equals love. No. Chocolate IS love. Deirdre Michalski is a travel and culinary writer covering topics near and far. You can read more about her adventures on her website TastesAndTravel.com
