The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us— remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations or charities giving back locally. We hope that as you read this issue, you—like us—find inspiration in the lives and experiences of your neighbors and the connections that have been made. Happy Thanksgiving, North Scottsdale!

HOMETOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY AND FAMILY SUPPORT THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES

HEROES ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY ERICA + JON PHOTOGRAPHY

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2018

Jay Robinson is a Scottsdale firefighter with Wildfire Specialty Training. When fires hit the coast in California last year, Jay and his team were up to the task. “Traveling to other states to assist with wildfires presents challenges because we are going to areas we don’t know and working in different climates and ever-changing conditions. Last year we went to Napa and witnessed the mass devastation – lives and property lost. We rescued a lot of people, and no one in our area lost their lives, so that was so rewarding,” he says. After 22 years as a firefighter, Jay says helping those involved in tragic events is what keeps him going, and he feels privileged to train others to do the same. “Scottsdale Fire Department is looked at nationally as a solid Wildfire Team. We have high standards in training and the ability to send crews out to help. It’s important to me that we can help other departments as well as citizens with our experience and knowledge.” The holiday season, as well as wildfire season, takes Jay away from his fiancé, who is also a firefighter. The inability to communicate in dire situations can be stressful. “She understands completely, but the hardest part is being away and not being able to communicate," he says. "I have been on numerous wildfires where I was off the grid, on top of a mountain or a burned area with no water trying to put the pieces back together. Luckily she knows the job and is supportive, which makes me feel so fortunate.” Jay encourages local support of the Scottsdale Fire Department. He says it is beneficial to take CPR classes, go to Wildfire Seminars and stay involved with community workshops. “Our community is kind and loyal; it’s why I love my job and why I do it in Scottsdale.”

“THIS IS WHAT I WAS MEANT TO DO. I ALWAYS RESPECTED POLICE, AND THE INTERACTION WITH OTHERS IN MY COMMUNITY MAKES IT REALLY AWESOME.” –POLICE OFFICER BRIAN HARTMAN

Former high school science teacher turned Scottsdale Police Officer Brian Hartman always knew that making a positive difference in the community was his calling. Now, as a resource officer at Coronado High School, he has fulfilled that destiny. “Everyday I get to make connections and truly make a difference. Having that ongoing communication with the students and their families is a real joy,” he says. Brian feels that being a police officer offers a unique coworker camaraderie due to the grueling hours and dependence on one another. “I get to work with real people, you trust them and there is a solid core friendship that comes with our line of work,” he says. Brian recognizes the hardships his job has had on his family but is fortunate that in his department there is flexibility and room to grow and change. “It’s tough to balance family and work. I changed to my current position to allow me to coach my son’s teams, be at school events and be a team with my wife more.” Brian and his family know that if something tragic happens, there is the possibility of working 24 to 36 hours in a row if needed. He says when he was newer to the force, he had an ah-ha moment about his career being all-encompassing. “I had been an officer for six years before I didn’t have to work a holiday. My wife never complained, but that year I was able to attend her work holiday party. The excitement for her in knowing her coworkers would get to see and meet her spouse meant so much to me, and it made me realize how difficult this must be on her during holiday season. It put it into perspective for sure,” he says. Brian says working in Scottsdale is such a blessing. “People stop me at Starbucks to thank me. They contribute turkeys and baked goods at holiday time to the station. It sounds cheesy, but it’s so nice.” Brian says he wouldn’t trade what he does for anything. “This is what I was meant to do. I always respected police, and the interaction with others in my community makes it really awesome.” 28

Part nurse, part provider, part administrator, she wears a variety of hats at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital and the Abrazo Arrowhead campus. Behind the scenes, Tammy works tirelessly to elevate the level of care for patients. She feels her work isn’t a job, but instead a commitment to a community. In less than three years, Tammy has helped bring minimally invasive alternatives in open-heart surgery to the hospitals, created a nurse navigator program to ensure a smooth transition from the hospital to home for patients and helped drive a shift in Abrazo’s internal culture, where every decision is made with the best interest of patients in mind. “It takes a team. When I think of how much we’ve accomplished in just a few years, it’s rewarding to know that the work we’re doing today will help bring better patient outcomes in the future,” she says. Tammy devotes most of her time spearheading efforts to build six Cardiovascular Centers of Excellence at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital. She also plays a big role in program development at the Abrazo Arrowhead Campus. “When you’re passionate about the work you do, long days blend together in an exciting way as you focus on achieving your goals,” she says. Tammy says the holiday season has made her especially grateful for what Arizona has to offer in the way of medical advancements. HOMETOWN HEROES

(CON TI N U ED)

To meet Officer Matt Figley is to know him as a dedicated member of the SWAT Team and a patrol officer who cares deeply about his family and his community. When you hear about the sacrifices he and his family have made so he can serve overseas in the military at the age of 41, you realize you are in the presence of a local hero. “I have been a police officer for 17 years and ended my active duty service with the United States Army in 2001 after serving nearly 10 years. I re-entered the army to serve with the Arizona National Guard. Despite deploying twice while on active duty, I am about to embark on my first deployment as a member of the Arizona National Guard. Unfortunately, due to operational security reasons, I can’t really say where I’m deploying to, but it is in the Middle East,” Matt says. Matt is a decorated officer and military member, receiving the Top Shooter Award, placing in the top of national sniper competitions and earning the Law Enforcement Commendation Award. He also has quite a collection of company coins for gunnery in the military. “These coins are given for going above and beyond. The person giving the coin will shake your hand with the coin in there and explain why they are giving it. Matt knows exactly where and why he got each of them, but he’s so humble that he won’t display them. Well, last year when he was on annual training, I bought a case to proudly display them in our home,” says Nicole Figley, Matt's wife. Matt believes everyone should serve the United States because it’s an honor. “When I broke contract while on active duty, it was the biggest regret of my life. I felt as if I had let America and my peers down. As a father and soldier, I can’t think of a better example to show my children than to always finish what they start, no matter how long it takes,” he says. Although the sacrifice is great and Matt often has to miss holidays and special events, Nicole is unphased, as she sees the bigger picture. “He’s my hero because he is very selfless. When he decided to go back into the National Guard, I could just see that he was in his element and back where he belonged. He’s so excited to finish what he started so long ago, and I can just see the pride he has when he puts on his uniform. I’ve seen him go out of his way to help make things easier for the citizens of his community. We are used to long hours and rescheduling of holidays. It takes a special person to risk their lives daily for complete strangers or to leave their family knowing there is a chance they won’t come home, but it’s who he is, and he’s amazing.” 30

WITH FALL UPON THE VALLEY, THERE IS NO BETTER ESCAPE THAN SEDONA FOR A LUXURIOUS AND REFRESHING WEEKEND AWAY. The Amara Resort and Spa is located in the heart of uptown Sedona with an atmosphere that blends nature’s fiery artistry with a relaxed social vibe. Amara Resort and Spa is the perfect secret sanctuary to cool down, relax and enjoy the unique beauty of the high desert. Guests can soak in the famed red rock views while taking a dip in the infinity-edge pool or play lawn games like cornhole with a margarita in hand. The resort also offers daily complimentary yoga and a nightly social hour for guests.

"There are so many offerings for our guests this fall, including stargazing on Monday evenings with local astronomers. As a dark sky community, we get amazing views of the night sky. We have an afternoon wine hour from 5-6 p.m., as well as bikes available for use to explore the city or mountain bikes to explore the creek and trails," General Manager Tara Cline says. The Amara Spa is possibly most notable at the resort. This award-winning retreat has been heralded by Vogue.com, The New York Times and The Huffington Post as a must-do in Sedona. Immediately disconnect from the demands of the outside world with one-of-akind treatments reflective of the harmonious and spiritual atmosphere there. Native American rattles; sage smudging; healing crystals; chakra balancing; custom oil blends of lavender, rosemary and sage drizzled down the spine; and the detoxifying properties of local Sedona mud help guests reconnect spiritually to the local environment and harness the metaphysical energy of the area for which Sedona has become famous. Set against red rock panoramas and nestled along Oak Creek, Amara Spa adds another dimension of peace and tranquility. The spa’s new enchanting experiences are rich in native ingredients and reflect a sincere passion for the area. "Our spa is very special, and the tranquility is unsurpassed. The Winds of Change Massage is a highlight and a must do," Tara says. There are six treatment rooms, and the full-service spa offers massages, facials, body treatments, foot and hand rituals, nail services, makeup application and a variety of perfectly paired spa packages. Amara Spa also boasts a private yoga studio with complimentary daily classes for resort guests, eucalyptus steam rooms, men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers and a retail boutique selling all-natural products. It is the ambiance that will attract guests, and a plethora of extravagant treatments will make it a ritualistic visit.

After rejuvenating in the spa, SaltRock Southwest Kitchen’s new executive chef, Logan Stephenson, welcomes guests to entice their taste buds with seafood that is fresh and flavorful, coupled with sweeping views as a backdrop. Logan draws inspiration from his Louisiana upbringing where he grew up hunting and fishing for his food. Today, he’s taking his own unique approach to the way the restaurant sources ingredients by establishing partnerships with Verde Valley fisheries, farmers and wineries to incorporate indigenous elements with local flair into the restaurant’s cuisine. The menu honors the traditions of the Southwest while upholding a California sensibility that marries fresh, light and seasonal ingredients. A few standouts of the new menu include Vera Cruz-style crab cakes with handmade sopes, chipotle butter, poblano aioli and baby cress ($22); seared pork belly with mole verde, crispy, wild onions and seared rajas ($16); and local trout with foraged mushrooms, chile tepin and grilled kale ($33). SaltRock’s cuisine is perfectly paired with the 180-degree breathtaking views it offers of Sedona’s iconic Camelhead and Snoopy red rock formations. The Amara Resort and Spa is truly an intimate getaway, with 100 spacious guest rooms and suites, combining modern design with Arizona’s comfortable, laid-back lifestyle and views of the surrounding red rocks, Oak Creek and lush foliage. While Amara is just steps from the hustle and bustle of Sedona’s uptown shopping, dining and cultural hub, the resort is situated below the main area and nestled on the banks of the creek, which makes it feel secluded, making it the perfect local getaway this fall.

ANIMAL KINGDOM

A PET-FRIENDLY HOLIDAY SEASON ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY ERICA + JON PHOTOGRAPHY

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE AND ALTERED TAILS' LASTING LEGACY

The Altered Tails staff loves helping animals at their clinics.

THE HOLIDAY SEASON MEANS ABUNDANCE, ESPECIALLY

THE PERFECT PET-FRIENDLY

WHEN IT COMES TO GIFTING AND FEASTING. For our furry

FEAST

friends, this can mean begging for scraps or being welcomed into a new home as a holiday gift. Whatever the case, keeping pets safe and healthy during the holiday season is essential.

“THE ENTIRE MEAL SHOULD FIT IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND. THE FOOD IS RICHER THAN WHAT THEY ARE NORMALLY USED TO, SO IT IS BEST TO ENJOY IN MODERATION.” – DR. ROBERT TRUPP ENTREE: Unseasoned turkey or ham, (remove any skin and skip the gravy) SIDE: Small potato or sweet potato (served cooked, diced up or mashed before the butter, eggs and milk are added) DESSERT: Small scoop of pumpkin pie filling

Dr. Robert Trupp is a veterinarian at North Scottsdale Animal Hospital. He and his family are pet owners themselves, and as an animal doctor, he sees a variety of issues this time of year. “Stomach unrest is the most common problem we tend to see at holiday time. The fats and high proteins in the table food we consume during Thanksgiving can cause pancreatitis,” he says. His easy tip: dispose of all food scraps, bones, fat trimmings and drippings in an inaccessible spot for pets. “We had a dog come into the hospital the day after Thanksgiving, and after X-rays, it was evident that the dog had been eating rocks. It was revealed that the owners had poured excess turkey drippings outside on the gravel. With the rocks now smelling and tasting of turkey, the dog ate the rocks. He is rock-free after surgery to remove them, but that could’ve been avoided.” The GI tract and pancreas are the main areas of concern in pets when taste testing human food. Many foods we eat during the holidays can cause serious illness to our pets, even if they seem like safe choices. “Animal fat is a danger, so trim the fat and gristle from the turkey before offering your pet a bite. Bones can cause choking or lodge in the intestinal tract, and no sauces or gravy are recommended as they are very high in sodium and/or sugars. Of course, absolutely no alcohol or chocolate. If you think your pet is sick from table food, please visit us for an evaluation. We are always here to help.”

Carrying on a legacy of keeping pets from facing euthanasia is a passion project for Dick Barnhart, co-chairman of Altered Tails. “Altered Tails was my wife Bea’s baby. She wanted people to know that while adoption is wonderful, spaying and neutering is essential. Pet overpopulation leads to euthanasia, and that epidemic is what Bea took seriously,” Dick says. What started with a woman spaying and neutering from her garage led to a vision of mobile and now brick-and-mortar clinics that offer low-cost spay and neuter surgery to end pet overpopulation. “We made a meaningful contribution when we decided to pour ourselves into Altered Tails," he says. "We are also grateful to our sponsors, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and Petsmart Charities, for seeing the good we were doing and coming aboard.” Bea’s passion for animals has spurred this large nonprofit organization with multiple freestanding state-of-the-art surgery facilities that sterilize more than 20,000 pets each year. Altered Tails has reduced the intake at local shelters by 40 percent and the euthanasia of dogs and cats by 86 percent since 2012. “Spaying and neutering can be expensive, but Altered Tails offers these services at a 75 percent savings compared to traditional services,” Dick says. On June 29, Bea passed away, and her family wants to ensure the longevity of Altered Tails and give Valley residents, regardless of their financial status, access to quality, affordable services for their pets. “Bea got to see things become successful, and that was so satisfying for her. My responsibility to my marvelous wife is that Altered Tails continues. We have wonderful people working with us, and my granddaughter has taken on a leadership role, so we feel we have a long road ahead in helping keep pets safe and alive,” he says. AlteredTails.org

Arizonans for Children Gives Back to the

Community in Various Ways ARTICLE STACI HAUK

THE WARMTH OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON CONJURES THOUGHTS OF FAMILY AND TOGETHERNESS. For foster children, there was a need to provide this security and create memories with adults they could trust. Arizonans for Children began by offering families with children in foster care an inviting place to have visits. Shortly after, they established a mentor program that matches volunteers with foster children to provide them with a role model and friend. "Mentors build a bond with foster children by helping them with homework, playing sports and more," says Outreach Coordinator Monique Quinones. Arizonans for Children mentors commit to a minimum one-year relationship with a foster child in Maricopa County. By donating time, mentors can help shape a child’s feelings of trust, acceptance and most importantly, hope. "These mentors become the one consistent person in the child's life, introducing them to basic life lessons that will greatly aid them." Arizonans for Children also has visitation centers that offer fun, educational, supervised environments for children in foster care to spend time with their families as they work toward reunification. This allows the family to heal and bond. They also host several major events each year for kids in foster care. "We have an annual holiday party in December, a Train Park Picnic in January, a Foster Festival/Resource Fair in February and many more throughout the year," Monique says. Arizonans for Children also offers continuing support for those age 18-plus. Life Skills classes, activities and workshops help these aged-out kids be more prepared for life outside the system. "These children are the future of our community; together we can make
