Happy April!
Although this winter was relatively mild—a trend we’ve seen in recent years—I’m definitely catching the spring fever. As the old saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” Maybe we even need to invest in a little extra rain to coax out the beauty of May!
This month, our focus is on investing—in every part of your life. By investing, I mean devoting time, energy, effort, or finances to achieve worthwhile results. It might be supporting our local community, enriching our relationships, securing our financial future, or even boosting our health.
As a father of four daughters, I truly believe in investing in the future. After all, who else will take care of us when we’re older? On page 38, you’ll find a spotlight on a few local Catholic high schools that are leading the way in shaping tomorrow’s leaders.
Your home is one of your biggest assets, so investing in its upkeep is key. On page 18, Linda Bernstein of LB Designs shares practical tips on maximizing your home’s potential. Whether you’re thinking of remodeling or just refreshing your space, there’s plenty of inspiration inside.
Health is another essential investment. Our cover model, Alison Kreideweis, co-founder of Empire Tri Club, explains on page 32 that “to be the best version of yourself for others, you have to carve out time to focus on what makes you a healthier or better person.” Her journey is as inspiring as it is relatable.
And then there’s the obvious investment—your finances. On page 26, insights from Nicholas Savino and Andrew Manzo, founders of Onesto Capital, who offer tailored financial solutions for business owners.
Thank you for being part of our community. Together, let’s continue to invest in the moments that matter most—whether it’s in our homes, our health, our families, or our future. I’m excited about the possibilities ahead and grateful to share this journey with you.

What’s so special about craft beer? For Tony Romano, co-owner of Gearblock Brewing Co., it’s the freshness that comes from locally made, preservative-free beer. Craft beer is made to be enjoyed as soon as brewing is done, he explains, while mass-produced beer requires additives to extend its shelf life.
“You can taste the difference,” notes Romano, who teamed up with his uncle, Ron Cavaliere, to start Gearblock three years ago. The business has since gained a dedicated following, brewing and serving a range of beers at their 2,000-square-foot brewery and taproom in Waldwick.
“We wanted the taproom to be casual but also elevated and somewhat refined—a lounge space with a subtle industrial feel,” Romano says with a smile.
“We had to get the scale right,” adds Cavaliere. “We wanted it large enough to offer a range of quality beers, but not so big that it became unmanageable—we both have day jobs, after all!”
“The atmosphere is friendly, and the clientele is terrific,” Cavaliere explains. “The only time we ever thought there might be an altercation, it turned out to be a good-natured argument about singing.” Cavaliere laughs. “It ended with a tough-looking, bearded motorcycle rider performing a show-stopping version of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ in the bar!”
The casual and comfortable Gearblock taproom is frequented by a few hundred regulars, some bringing their kids and a couple of pizzas to enjoy while sipping a pint. Servers, knowledgeable about the beers and how they’re brewed, pour the drinks.
Romano and Cavaliere's self-funded craft brewing business began with a hobby—brewing beer at home using pre-made “Mr. Beer” kits. Eventually, Romano built his own brewing system, and the beer quality improved to award-winning levels.
“Ron and I always talked about starting a business together—lots of ideas came up, like a pizza shop—but we realized craft brewing was the perfect fit,” Romano says. “Beer was a topic that kept coming up at family gatherings.”
The name “Gearblock” nods to the duo’s long-standing interest in cars. Both Romano and Cavaliere worked on car engines and raced cars as youths, and Romano spent 18 years as an automotive technology specialist at Toyota. “At first, we thought of naming
the bar ‘Gearbox,’ but another business already used that name, so we went with ‘Gearblock.’ It’s not a car term, but it sounds cool!” Cavaliere jokes.
“I’m generally guided by what I like personally when it comes to flavors and styles,” Romano shares. “But beer trends change quickly, so we’re always looking to try something different.”
“We’re always tweaking recipes and adjusting the process,” Cavaliere adds.
To create a new recipe, the duo typically starts with a target flavor profile and alcohol by volume (ABV), working to achieve both in the same brew. “It’s difficult to nail the perfect flavor and ABV simultaneously, but playing around with it is what makes it fun!” says Cavaliere.
Romano's favorite Gearblock brew is the “Tri-Five” New England IPA, while Cavaliere enjoys pilsners like Warrior Pilsner, named after Waldwick High School’s mascot, and Fahrvergnugen, named after a 1990s Volkswagen ad campaign.
“As brewers, we have the ability to be creative and try new ideas, so our range of beers is wide and unique,” Romano says. The menu often features fan favorites like Gearblock’s Oreo beer or a stout aged in bourbon barrels, along with Germanstyle Märzen ales and fruited sour beers. Gearblock also offers hard seltzers and occasionally homemade root beer.
“It’s not easy, but it’s a fun business,” Cavaliere laughs. “We’re still learning and always exploring!”

MAXIMIZING YOUR HOME’S POTENTIAL WITH EXPERT LINDA BERNSTEIN
Renovating your kitchen or bathroom can greatly increase your home's value and create a space that fits your lifestyle. Linda Bernstein, a well-versed kitchen and bathroom designer with over 25 years of experience, shares her insights on key design trends and tips for homeowners looking to invest in their spaces.
she shares. Sustainability has also grown in importance, with eco-friendly materials in cabinets and construction materials.
Bathrooms have evolved into spa-like retreats with walk-in showers, air jetted bathtubs, bidet function toilets and heated flooring. “People are focusing on creating spaces that are relaxing and technologically advanced.
Bernstein's passion for design began early, inspired by her interest in interior design and architecture. After studying Interior Design in New York City, she began her career at Garth Custom Kitchens in Scarsdale, New York. Today, she is owner of LB Designs, a boutique kitchen showroom in Allendale. Bernstein combines aesthetic and functional design to guide homeowners seeking kitchen and bathroom upgrades. “I’ve always had a passion for design and an eye for how spaces can be both beautiful and practical,” she explains.
Over the years, Bernstein has seen significant changes in design trends. Open-concept layouts have transformed kitchens into social hubs. “Homeowners are embracing smart appliances like refrigerators that track groceries and ovens controlled via smartphones,”
Chromotherapy light products in showers and tubs are a newer product now offered in spalike bathrooms.
When renovating kitchens, Bernstein emphasizes the need to balance function and aesthetics. “Top priorities often include storage, counter space, and traffic flow,” she says. “People want their kitchens to look beautiful but also to be highly functional.”
Linda’s approach begins by understanding each client’s specific needs. “I ask how they use the space daily, then we focus on key issues like storage, counter space, and appliances while ensuring the design reflects their style,” she notes.
Each client gets a custom floor plan tailored to their space. Bernstein assesses how clients use their kitchens, asking about their cooking and entertaining habits. “I create a
layout that maximizes flow and functionality, ensuring it works for both aesthetic and practical needs,” she explains.
Lighting plays a key role in kitchen design. Bernstein uses creative solutions to enhance both functionality and ambiance. “Under-cabinet lighting brightens workspaces, while recessed ceiling lights offer even light distribution,” she says. “Lighting inside cabinet boxes and drawers provide a decorative or functional illumination.
Bernstein helps homeowners select appliances that fit into the kitchen design. "Some clients prefer integrated appliances that blend into cabinetry, while others opt for sleek stainless steel," she notes. Smart technology, such as remote monitoring and voice-activated controls, has become a key consideration.
When it comes to countertops, Bernstein encourages homeowners to consider trends like using the same material for both countertops and backsplashes for a cohesive look. “Thicker countertop edges are also popular right now. They add a bold, custom feel,” she says.
Bernstein explains the distinction between custom and semi-custom cabinetry: "Custom cabinetry offers endless options in wood types, finishes, and door styles, but comes with a higher price tag and longer lead time." Semi-custom cabinets are more budget-friendly but with fewer options. Bernstein works closely with clients to help them choose the best option for their needs.
Bernstein plays an active role in the installation process to ensure everything

stays on track. "I act as the liaison between the homeowner and the construction team, coordinating schedules and ensuring communication," she shares.
Bernstein advises renovating before moving into a new home if possible to avoid disruption. Spring and summer are ideal times to begin renovations. For a worthwhile kitchen upgrade, Linda recommends spending about 15-20% of the home's value.
With thoughtful, functional design, homeowners can create spaces that are both beautiful and practical, increasing their home’s value and enjoyment for years to come. Linda Bernstein’s expertise helps homeowners make informed decisions for successful renovations.
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of LB Designs' showroom in Allendale! Linda Bernstein is proud to have spent the past decade helping homeowners bring their dream spaces to life, and she looks forward to continuing to create beautiful and functional designs for years to come.

Haze Gallery in Berlin, Germany, announced it will represent Xiomaro, a Bergen County, New Jersey, artist known for his National Park photography. His images of Morristown National Historical Park were the subject of a PBS episode and an exhibition at the Morris Museum. The gallery will showcase his work to collectors worldwide.
A former lawyer, Xiomaro turned to photography after overcoming prostate cancer.
His street photography is as documentary as his National Park work, but his candid images of urban life have an abstract and surreal quality that captures Manhattan’s chaos and energy. The unusual results are achieved by photographing the reflective surfaces of store windows, office buildings, vehicles and bus shelters.
“I wanted to document how things feel – not just how they look – for preservation as future history,” Xiomaro says.
The layers of symbols, colors and distortions in his work can be interpreted in many ways. For him, the themes are as abstract as the photographs.
“There are portraits with dreamy images floating above the heads like thought bubbles. It’s as if they are wondering about their place in the world,” he shares.
Xiomaro’s unconventional approach caught the gallery’s attention.
“I was looking for photographers with unique narratives and bold perspectives,” explains Irina Rusinovich, CEO and curator of Haze Gallery.
The gallery, founded in 2019, represents emerging and established international artists in photography, painting and sculpture. It is near Berlin’s prestigious Kurfürstendamm, a shopping boulevard akin to the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Rusinovich is also the founder and editor-in-chief of Purple Haze magazine, a 10-yearold publication focused on art and culture.
Both Xiomaro and Rusinovich have had their careers shaped by health crises. After overcoming prostate cancer in 2005, Xiomaro transitioned from a career as an entertainment lawyer representing recording artists. Experimenting with photography eventually led to commissions from the National Park Service. The experience compelled him to adopt the pseudonym Xiomaro (pronounced “SEE-oh-MAH-ro”), which means “ready for battle.”
In 2016, Rusinovich was diagnosed with breast cancer, prompting a move from her native Russia to Berlin for chemotherapy. After her recovery, she remained in Germany and started her gallery and magazine.
Rusinovich believes art “should be accessible to all, regardless of background or prior knowledge. My goal is to demystify art, make it approachable and spark conversations.”
Xiomaro shares her philosophy. His book Street Photography of New York City – Street Haunting in the Big Apple will be published by Fonthill Media this year. In it, he reveals the backstory of his photography and its connection to history, psychology and politics.
HOW ONESTO CAPITAL EMPOWERS BUSINESS OWNERS WITH FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS
As anyone with a small business knows, securing capital remains one of the greatest challenges they face. For Nicholas Savino and Andrew Manzo, founders of Onesto Capital, the solution lies in providing accessible, transparent, and tailored financial services.
Savino and Manzo, childhood friends from Mahwah, played hockey together for 20 years before both entering private wealth management. Their careers eventually led them to recognize a gap in the lending space.
“We saw a tremendous need for business owners,” Manzo explains. “When we were in private wealth management, we were taking money from people and investing it, but a lot of people were hesitant because they needed money more than they needed to invest it.”
Manzo recalls a turning point when he was offered a job in the funding industry. “I realized I now had an opportunity to help business owners get money instead of just managing their wealth,” he notes. “I pretty much jumped on that, started learning the industry, and then I told Nick about it. He said, ‘This is a great opportunity.’”
Savino agrees, emphasizing that small businesses are often overlooked in the lending space. “It’s difficult for small businesses to acquire capital a lot of the time,” he says. “I thought it was a great opportunity—still in finance but a different factor of finance.”
After learning the industry, Manzo decided to branch off and start his own brokerage. “I didn’t have the money to be funding, but I had all the resources and connections to broker deals between business owners and the funding companies I worked with over the years,” he shares. “I built relationships with banks, lending companies, and investment firms—anyone offering capital.”
Manzo pitched the idea to Savino over a few dinners. “After some convincing and teaching him a little bit about the industry, he was fully up to speed,” Manzo says. “We said, ‘All right, let’s do it,’ and left it to fate. We started our own brokerage and have been in business for the past year and a half.”
Onesto Capital offers a wide range of financial solutions, including SBA loans, venture capital, debt consolidation, and revenue-based financing. The firm’s flexibility allows it to assist clients with varying financial backgrounds and credit scores.
“If a business owner comes to us looking for short-term capital, we can get that for them right away,” Savino explains. “If they need a longer-term capital solution, we usually go to a bank or an SBA lender.”
Manzo explains that their product offerings have grown organically. “We started with a few core services,” he says. “But if we run into a client who needs something we don’t offer, we find a connection, reach out to a company, and partner with them. Our goal is to help clients in any way possible.”
“A lot of our clients say it’s a breath of fresh air working with us compared to other brokers,” Savino notes. “We tell them exactly what’s going on, what we’re doing, and what’s possible.”
Savino adds that their ability to work with private lenders sets them apart. “Most banks require a minimum credit score of 700 or 750 for an SBA loan,” he says. “We work with clients who have a 500 credit score because private lenders care more about the money coming into the company than the credit score itself.”
Manzo shares a recent success story. “Last year, we had a client who wanted a $4 million SBA loan but had a sub-600 credit score. He couldn’t get bank funding,” he explains.
“Our company name, Onesto, means ‘honest’ in Italian. Because that’s what we stand for.”
- Andrew Manzo
For business owners considering taking the leap into entrepreneurship, Manzo offers simple but powerful advice: “Go for it,” he shares. “Make sure it’s something you’re passionate about, not just something you think will make money. If you’re passionate, success will follow.”
Savino echoes the sentiment, highlighting Onesto Capital’s commitment to client success. “Our goal is to help businesses thrive,” he shares. “We work with struggling businesses daily. Whether it’s debt consolidation, a capital infusion, or funding for purchase orders, we want to help them get to the next step.”
Onesto Capital differentiates itself from competitors through transparency and a broad range of financial products.
“We spoke with the client and let him know we weren’t able to get him the full $4 million, but still had other options available to him. We had him break down the exact amount of his initial project and came to the conclusion that, at that time, he really only needed between $150,000 and $200,000. We were able to secure $200,000 from a private lender. By the end of the year, we funded him over half a million dollars to fuel future projects, which helped him grow his business to the point where he was acquired by another company.”
Looking ahead, Savino and Manzo aim to expand Onesto Capital’s reach while strengthening ties within their local community. “We work with businesses across all 50 states, as well as in Canada and Puerto Rico,” Savino says. “But we also want to personally help people close to our community and get more involved locally.”
As they continue to grow, the team remains focused on their mission—offering honest, transparent, and effective financial solutions. “Our company name, Onesto, means ‘honest’ in Italian,” Manzo shares. “Because that’s what we stand for.”

Ingredients:
• 1.5 oz Gin (a floral gin like Hendrick’s works great) • 0.75 oz Elderflower liqueur (St-Germain is a popular choice)
• 0.5 oz Fresh lemon juice
• 0.25 oz Simple syrup (optional, depending on sweetness preference)
• Sparkling water or club soda
• A few dashes of bitters (orange bitters works well)
• Edible flowers or lemon wheel for garnish (optional
Optional Variation: For a slightly different twist, you can add a splash of grapefruit juice instead of the simple syrup for a citrusy bitterness.

1. Shake the base: In a cocktail shaker, combine the gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup (if using). Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
2. Strain: Strain the mixture into a tall glass filled with ice.
3. Top with bubbles: Slowly pour in sparkling water or club soda to your liking—about 2-3 oz, depending on how fizzy you want it.
4. Add bitters: Add a couple of dashes of orange bitters on top for a bit of complexity.
5. Garnish: Garnish with an edible flower (like a pansy or a small violet) or an orange/lemon wheel to bring a pop of color.

Alison Kreideweis on Resilience, Dedication, and Finding Balance
ARTICLE BY ALLISON K. LIM
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICH SILIVANCH
Juggling multiple roles is par for the course for Alison Kreideweis—athlete, entrepreneur, and mom of three active boys. As co-founder of Empire Tri Club in New York City alongside her cousin Jessica McDonald, Kreideweis and her team of coaches empower athletes to achieve their individual training
“People sign up for one triathlon, but by the end of the season, they do five and have made great friends.” - Alison Kreideweis
goals, such as completing everything from short-distance triathlons and marathons to full Ironman Competitions and World Championship events.
Kreideweis's journey into the world of triathlons began with her first race at the age of 17, while a student at Northern Highlands Regional High School. Since that time, getting race-ready has become her passion, and Kreideweis has dedicated herself to both her personal growth and that of her client athletes, one race at a time.
A USAT All-American and 3x member of Team USA, Kreideweis has been adding to her medal collection for the past 25 years. She prefers the more adventurous races, describing two that top her list of favorites. The first, Survival of the Shawangunks in new paltz, NY, is an eight stage triathlon starting with a 30 mile bike, followed by a run, swim, run,
swim, run, swim, run that she completed alongside her sister. She recounts, “After a 30-mile bike ride, you're in the woods for the rest of the race. You swim across the lake, run to the next lake, and on and on, until it ends with a .7 mile run up a hill to the top of a tower.” Phew! The second is Escape from Alcatraz, a nod back to the notorious prison-break escapades from the famous Alcatraz prison off the coast of San Francisco. Athletes arrive at Alcatraz Island via boat, then jump off and swim 1.5 miles to shore, followed by a challenging bike and sprint up and down hills, through deep sand, and across a long, challenging sand ladder.
Life events seem to spur Kreideweis's energy, fueling her drive for success. At just 12-weeks postpartum, Kreideweis competed the World Championships, crossing the finish line with her newborn. When asked, “How did you manage that?” she replies, “You just do it.” Adding, “In order to be the best version
of yourself for others, you have to carve out time to focus on what makes you a healthier or better person.” This decorated athlete understands the power of investing in herself and is currently celebrating another big win—"I just found out that I qualified for the World Championships. I accepted my spot for Team USA, and will be going to Australia in October!”
For Kreideweis and her family, triathlons are a normal part of life, and Empire Tri Club athletes have become extended family. With bike and run workouts taking place in Central Park, Empire Tri Club provides a sense of belonging in an often lonely city. Kreideweis shares, “New York City can be an overwhelming place, but when you find these smaller communities within the big city, it makes it feel much less daunting.” Oftentimes, Kreideweis states, athletes keep coming back for more. “People sign up for one triathlon, but by the end of the season, they do five and have made great friends.”
To squelch the fear newbies might feel when embarking on their training journeys, Empire Tri Club offers 12-week community-focused sessions where athletes learn the basics needed to cross their first finish line. They also offer discounted memberships for advanced swimmers with Red Tide, a master’s swim team, and open water swim clinics for beginners. One of these newer athletes—someone who had been afraid to put her face in ocean water— became Kreideweis's greatest success story when she completed a triathlon with a half-mile open-water swim. Kreideweis proudly shares, “It was a super short race, and she wasn't winning it, but we took somebody who had this really big fear and helped her conquer it.”
Empire Tri Club prides themselves on their ability to provide 1:1 support to their athletes and customize training plans to suit the needs and timeline of each individual. While most training takes place in New York City, coaches also work virtually to cater to clients all over the world. They offer destination training camps in places such as Mallorca, Bermuda, Colorado, and Martha's Vineyard as well. In some of these training camps, many people share a house and the responsibilities that come with it. In addition to participating in three daily workouts, both trainers and trainees

- Alison Kreideweis
prepare all of the meals. “Someone cuts peppers; another marinates chicken. We want people to be part of the process.” Kreideweis continues, “It’s a big team-bonding experience.”
While Empire Tri Club workouts are intense, Kreideweis stresses the value of balance. For example, a 60-mile bike ride might end with some laughs at a beer garden. She notes, “You can train hard and be super competitive but also have fun, live in the moment, and focus on your community and the people it draws you toward.”
KREIDEWEIS'S WINNING FORMULA
If you’re looking to train for your first—or next—race, follow Kreideweis's tips for success. 1. Partner up. Surround yourself with a supportive community. You’ll be far more successful
working with friends, family, a team, or a coach than if you go it alone.
2. Keep your eye on the prize. Focus on your training. Personal goals, such as weight loss, will come naturally. They’re an added bonus.
3. Take baby steps. Don’t jump to the finish line. Pick a realistic training goal and take small, measurable steps to get there. As Kreideweis explains, “You wouldn't sign up for a marathon without first running a 5K.”
Following these tips will help you tackle any race with ease. But, as Kreideweis reveals, “The metal you get at the end of the race is the icing on the cake. It’s a reflection of how you've transformed your life over the past 12, 16, 20 weeks of training to become a better version of yourself.”

The school’s financial commitment is balanced by its tremendous return, evidenced by the $45 million in scholarships awarded to the Class of 2024 and their 100% college acceptance rate.
IHA’s commitment to academics, athletics, theater, and service sets it apart. As Principal Kerry Carroll notes, the school’s success goes beyond these achievements.
“IHA has set a high bar for academic excellence, Catholic values, service, and sisterhood for over six decades. As a proud member of the Class of 2004, I can attest to the transformative power of time spent in this community. Our goal is to enable students to develop leadership skills, grow in faith, and challenge themselves academically while ensuring they feel valued by their teachers and peers.”
IHA’s sisterhood extends beyond graduation, forming a lifelong network of support. Alumni return as teachers, counselors, staff, and supporters, creating lasting bonds.
The school offers a rigorous academic program and is the only Catholic school in Bergen County accredited by both the Commission on Secondary Schools and the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools. The curriculum prepares students for college with skills in time management, writing, and critical thinking. Service is at the heart of IHA's mission, encouraging a lifetime of volunteerism and faith in action.
With nearly 80 clubs and 16 sports teams, IHA provides a well-rounded education that develops both the mind and spirit. A focus on health, wellness, and extracurricular involvement ensures a balanced experience for all students.
Investing in a daughter’s future at IHA provides an unmatched educational experience that empowers young women to contribute positively to society.
