“I make sure all design materials are selected and delivered before we break ground.”
From crafting renovations on TV to executing high-profile projects for clients nationwide, Bergen County local John Colaneri’s journey in the design and building industry has been nothing short of remarkable. With more than 20 years of experience, including a decade of high-energy work with HGTV, Colaneri has carved out a niche as both a designer and a television personality. As he continues to shape homes and businesses through his firm, Lilyshea LLC, Colaneri offers a fresh perspective on design, blending creativity with precision. For our Home issue, we sat down with Colaneri to explore his career, creative process, and approach to balancing work and family life.
John Colaneri’s passion for design and architecture began long before his television career. “Early on at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes, I discovered my love for design and architecture,” he recalls. “My senior year, I took a drafting class, and that really opened my eyes to the world of building and design. But it wasn’t until I worked in construction during college summers that I realized this was something I wanted to pursue professionally.”
After graduating from Penn State University, Colaneri found his footing in construction, working with his cousin and uncle at Brunelleschi Construction, a development company. The company specialized in converting brownstones and older warehouses into high-end condos in Hoboken and Jersey City.
In 2011, Colaneri’s career took an unexpected turn when HGTV approached him to host a show. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” Colaneri laughs, reflecting on his transition into the media world. “But it was a whirlwind, and I ended up filming more than 100 episodes and three digital series in a decade.” His popularity grew, and alongside his cousin, Anthony Carrino, Colaneri became a beloved figure on shows like Kitchen Cousins and Cousins Undercover.
Colaneri’s expertise in both construction and design has given him a distinctive edge when working in North Jersey. While he’s tackled projects in more than 20 states across the U.S., he believes the tri-state area—especially New Jersey—presents unique challenges. “The regulations here can be a nightmare,” he says. “New Jersey has a lot of paperwork that can slow down the process, and the state is full of older homes that often throw you curveballs once you start tearing down walls.”
Despite these hurdles, Colaneri embraces the challenge, knowing each renovation is a chance to bring out the best in a space. “I always tell my clients to have a 20% contingency in the budget because unexpected issues are almost guaranteed,” he adds. “Old homes can hide all kinds of challenges, from outdated wiring to structural problems.”
When designing a space, Colaneri starts by getting to know his clients. “The first step is always determining how the space is going to function,” he explains. “Once I grasp the function, we can start talking about form.” From there, Colaneri gathers inspiration from both the client’s preferences and his own extensive design knowledge, creating mood boards and material samples to guide the process.
“I always tell my clients that while I can give my professional opinion, at the end of the day, it’s their home,” he says. “Design is personal, and trends are fleeting. I want my work to be timeless.”
Colaneri's work with HGTV brought him face-to-face with a world that moved at a pace he had never encountered before. “When you’re filming a show and you have a week to build an entire kitchen, the speed is incredible,” he recalls. “We had to plan everything three months in advance, and once the build began, it was nonstop, 24-hour-a-day effort.”
“Seeing the homeowner’s reaction when he saw his new home for the first time—I’ll never forget it.” - John Colaneri
This fast-paced environment shaped the way he runs his own business today. “Now that I’m focused on my own company, Lilyshea LLC, I’m really focused on upfront planning,” he says. “I make sure all design materials are selected and delivered before we break ground. That way, we don’t have to scramble in the middle of a project.”
One of Colaneri’s most memorable projects came from his time working with The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We did a complete home renovation in just seven days for a wounded veteran,” he says. “The speed of the build was intense, but the real motivation came from the purpose behind it. We wanted to create a home that was not just functional, but truly comfortable for someone who had sacrificed so much.”
The project not only challenged Colaneri’s construction skills but also touched him personally. “It was an honor to work on a project that would change someone’s life,” he says. “Seeing the homeowner’s reaction when he saw his new home for the first time—I’ll never forget it.”
While Colaneri is known for creating stunning spaces for others, designing his own home presented its own set of challenges. “When you work in design, there are so many ideas you want to try,” he admits. “It can be overwhelming. But when it’s your own space, it’s about finding the balance between what you love and what works.”
For Colaneri, this means blending rustic and contemporary elements to create a home that feels both timeless and personal. “I always tell people that when they design their home, they should aim to make people feel something,” he adds. “Whether it’s love or even dislike— just don’t make it forgettable.”
Like many professionals, Colaneri’s career can be demanding, but he works hard to balance his professional life with his personal life. “Time is the one thing I wish I had more of,” he says. “But I always make sure to prioritize my family. Work doesn’t feel like work because I love what I do, but at the end of the day, my family is what matters most.”
Colaneri’s passion for design is clearly something that runs in the family. “My daughter loves to draw, especially fashion designs,” he says with a smile. “I see a lot of similarities between fashion and design. Trends often overlap, and it’s fun to see her creativity blossom.”
As for what’s next, Colaneri is focused on expanding his commercial construction management business. “The past few years have been busy with major projects like Patel Brothers grocery stores,” he says. “We’re building 30,000-square-foot locations,
John Colaneri is the founder of Lilyshea LLC, a design and construction management firm specializing in commercial and residential projects. which is a completely different challenge from residential projects. I love the challenge, and I’m excited to see these new stores open in the coming years.”
Though he’s already achieved so much, Colaneri remains passionate about the future. “I’m focused on continuing to grow my business, but I’m also always looking for new opportunities to educate and inspire others,” he says. “If I can find more time, I’d love to do even more!”
For John Colaneri, the journey is far from over. With his drive, expertise, and creative vision, he will undoubtedly continue to shape homes, businesses, and even the next generation of design enthusiasts.

USR TODAY, BOROUGH OF HO-HO-KUS, BOROUGH OF ALLENDALE, BOROUGH OF SADDLE RIVER
Neighborly, welcoming, family-oriented, community-minded. These are just a few attributes nine residents shared when asked what they love about their hometowns. On our search to uncover why our neighbors hold the Northern Highlands so dear, we discovered that while Ho-Ho-Kus, Allendale, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River share these endearing qualities, each town also boasts its own distinct personality.
One local homeowner, who has lived in three of the four towns over the past 20 years, describes her current town of Saddle River as “private” with an underlying “look out for each other” theme. She enjoys the proximity to New York City, as well as the “different types of rural and urban areas, so you don’t feel like you’re isolated.” But the main reason her family
“WHETHER SEEING FRIENDS AT SCHOOL DROP-OFF, SAYING HI TO THE MAIL CARRIER, OR GOING INTO GARBO’S, THE PEOPLE ARE WHAT MAKE THIS TOWN A COMMUNITY.”
stayed in the Northern Highlands region was its top-rated school system. “The regional high school opens up a whole new opportunity to meet people. It’s an extended community.”
This sentiment was echoed by Vic and Nilu Cividini, nine-year residents of Upper Saddle River. Vic, who grew up in River Vale, knew he wanted to settle in the suburbs. For Cividini, who grew up in Istanbul and has lived in cities her whole life, the move to the suburbs was not as organic. However, she explains, “If it’s not a city, I want to embrace nature.” After placing offers on multiple homes in the region, they settled in a town they describe as “sophisticated, family-first, and nature-friendly.” Upper Saddle River and Saddle River certainly appeal to nature lovers, with their one- and two-acre lots, respectively. As an added bonus, they offer space for some fun—what’s a backyard without a zip line?
Bridget Carroll, former Allendale resident and current Ho-HoKus resident, often takes her two active boys to enjoy the beautiful parks and natural areas the region has to offer. Whether scootering on the track and throwing rocks in the water at Lyons Park in Upper Saddle River or exploring Crestwood Park and the Celery Farm in Allendale, there are many places to “get fresh air and move our bodies.” An active member of the town’s Contemporary Club, Carroll shares, “Whether seeing friends at school drop-off, saying hi to the mail carrier, or going into Garbo’s, the people are what make this town a community.”
Long-time Ho-Ho-Kus residents Diane and Ray Rebholz moved to town 42 years ago. The downtown was quieter, and the pace was a bit slower, but one thing has not changed—the idea that “you can always count on your neighbor.” When they moved from Long Island, the Rebholz family hadn’t even heard of Ho-Ho-Kus, but the tree-lined streets caught their eye. They met people through school events and the Contemporary Club and raised their children alongside neighbors who moved to the block around the same time. Diane Rebholz loves sharing town events, such as the annual Memorial Day Parade, with her grown children and their families and continues to stay involved through the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club and the Ho-HoKus Community Garden.
Grace Perruzzi and Stacey Patterson, who both reside in Allendale, echo the importance of community involvement. Perruzzi shares, “Through the Newcomers’ Club, we met a lot of people who were friendly, social, and aligned with how we wanted to raise our family.” Once their children were off to high

school, Perruzzi became a member of the Allendale Women’s Club, and her husband C.J. joined the Holiday Observers, a club “involved in making Allendale a special place to live.”
Patterson, who moved with her family from Hoboken, tries to be “as involved as possible.” When researching their next home, Patterson and her husband placed school systems and proximity to the city at the top of their list. Upon moving to Allendale, Patterson noticed that “everyone is friendly, helpful, and open.” Kelly Knight, a nine-year resident, describes Allendale as “small, quaint, and one of the prettiest towns. The kids can ride their bikes everywhere. The connections they’ve made and the opportunities they’ve had—this was definitely the best place to raise my kids.”
While the tree-lined streets and charming downtown areas might seem reminiscent of sleepy suburbia, Ho-Ho-Kus, Allendale, Upper Saddle River, and Saddle River have quite a lot going for them. The Northern Highlands region is full of great restaurants, shopping, and nature-focused living. In addition, its location makes it ideal for commuters or those heading to the city for dinner. But that’s not all. You can reach hiking trails and mountains within 15 to 30 minutes and have your toes in the sand in just over an hour.

tirelessly and achieved perfection. Her process is seamless, her pricing is excellent, and we plan to use her again in the spring. The clutter is gone, and I swear I sleep better at night knowing everything is perfectly labeled.”
As a business owner, mother, and wife navigating the home organization industry, Heidi faces many of the same challenges as other women-owned businesses—chief among them, how to juggle it all. With the support of family and friends, she attributes much of her success to resilience, a keen understanding of client needs, and a deep passion for her work. “The home organization space can be competitive, but I believe what sets The Perfect Pak apart is our dedication to truly listening to clients’ needs,” she says. “We offer solutions that are personalized and sustainable, ensuring that clients not only have a well-organized space but one that reflects their lifestyle and personality.”
At The Perfect Pak, Heidi and her team believe in blending functionality with style. Whether the goal is to organize a home or prepare for a move, they tailor solutions to each client’s unique needs. “Every family is distinct, so we take the time to understand your wants, needs, family dynamics, and lifestyle,” Heidi says. By customizing organizational strategies, she ensures each space is both efficient and visually appealing.
“We design spaces that promote relaxation and productivity, reflect your personal style, and encourage a sense of calm,” she adds. Through careful curation, The Perfect Pak team creates harmonious environments that inspire and support daily life. “We listen to and understand each client’s unique challenges,” Heidi says. “This allows us to create functional, organized spaces that work for their lifestyle.”
What sets The Perfect Pak apart is Heidi’s commitment to providing personalized, sustainable organizing solutions. Whether she’s creating storage solutions for a young family or helping seniors downsize, her empathetic, detail-oriented approach ensures her clients’ needs are always met.
Her philosophy also emphasizes sustainable practices, including repurposing, recycling, and restyling to minimize waste and maximize resources. This focus on sustainability extends to Heidi’s personal values, which include a passion for community involvement. As president of the Upper Saddle River Garden Club, Heidi leads initiatives supporting local schools, senior citizens, and environmental causes.
In addition to creating order in her clients' lives, Heidi is committed to giving back to the community. Donations from her projects regularly benefit organizations like CASA, St. Theresa’s, Catholic Charities, and veterans’ groups.
Two common hurdles many people face in home organization are knowing where to start and feeling overwhelmed by the task. Heidi suggests a simple approach to overcoming both challenges:
start small. “Focus on one room at a time and break it down into smaller tasks. Set aside just a short amount of time each day and gradually build momentum,” she advises.
This incremental approach makes organizing manageable and prevents it from becoming overwhelming. “As you complete each small section, you’ll gain confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment,” Heidi says.
For those planning a move, Heidi offers a few key pieces of advice.
“One of the biggest mistakes people make when moving is failing to purge before packing,” she says. “It’s tempting to throw everything in boxes, but you don’t want to bring unnecessary items to your new space.”
Desk Detox: A cluttered desk can lead to a cluttered mind. Heidi recommends sorting through papers, discarding what’s unnecessary, and filing important documents. For added convenience, digitize any documents you don’t need in hardcopy form. A tidy workspace promotes better focus and productivity.
Closet Cleanse: Take time to evaluate your wardrobe. Purge items that no longer fit or serve your style and consider donating gently used clothing or swapping items with friends. The result is a wardrobe that better reflects your current needs and a closet that’s much easier to navigate.
Another common mistake? Failing to label boxes. Heidi recommends clearly marking boxes with both the contents and the room they belong in. Colorcoding boxes by room can further simplify the unpacking process, saving time and reducing stress.
With flowers in full bloom, Heidi shares her top three spring cleaning tips to help individuals revitalize their spaces for the season:
Pantry Purge: Spring is the perfect time to evaluate your pantry. Go through your canned goods and spices and discard expired items. To prevent this from happening again, mark expiration dates on cans with a Sharpie. Organize your pantry by placing the oldest items in front to ensure they’re used before they expire.
These simple yet effective steps can help transform key areas of your home, creating a space that feels more organized and peaceful.
At the heart of Heidi's work is a desire to make a lasting difference in her clients’ lives. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the relief on a client’s face as we transform their space,” she says. “It’s those moments that remind
me why I’m so passionate about what I do.”
Whether you’re tackling a spring cleaning project, organizing your home, or preparing for a move, The Perfect Pak offers expert solutions that help you create spaces that are functional, beautiful, and stress-free.

ARTICLE BY CHLOE ANDERSON
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 lb cooked chicken (shredded or diced)
• 1 cup carrots, diced
• 1 cup peas (frozen or fresh)
• 1 cup celery, diced
• 1/2 cup onion, diced
• 1/4 cup butter
• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 cups chicken broth
• 1 cup milk
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 2 refrigerated pie crusts
• 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). 2. Cook the vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, and celery. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are softened. 3. Make the sauce: Stir in the garlic powder and flour. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to lightly brown and form a roux. 4. Add liquids: Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Let the mixture cook for about 5 minutes, or until it thickens. 5. Add chicken and peas: Stir in the cooked chicken and peas. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. 6. Prepare the pie crust: Roll out one pie crust and fit it into the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish. Pour the chicken and vegetable mixture into the crust. 7. Top the pie: Place the second pie crust over the filling. Trim any excess dough, then pinch the edges together to seal. Make a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. 8. Egg wash (optional): For a golden finish, brush the top of the crust with a beaten egg. 9. Bake: Place the pie in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy. 10. Cool and serve: Let the chicken pot pie cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy the comforting warmth of a homemade classic!
With spring just around the corner, homeowners across the state are dreaming of backyard upgrades to make the most of warmer weather. Enter NJ Decks and Railings, a family-owned business led by Bruce and Judy Verblaauw, offering expertly crafted decks, railings, and pergolas designed to enhance outdoor living.
“People are investing more in their homes than ever before,” Bruce says. “Your backyard is no longer just a yard—it’s an extension of your living space.”
NJ Decks and Railings has its roots in a business founded by Bruce’s father in 1970, originally focused on general renovations. Bruce joined in 1982, and over the years, the company shifted its focus exclusively to outdoor spaces. Since 2010, they’ve been proud members of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA), reflecting their commitment to safety, quality, and innovation in the decking industry.
The team at NJ Decks and Railings takes pride in creating customized spaces that align with each client’s lifestyle and home architecture. Whether it’s a multi-level deck, an outdoor kitchen, or a modern pergola with a louvered roof, every project
starts with an in-home consultation to understand the client’s needs.
“We really listen to what our clients want, but we also bring our expertise to guide them,” Bruce explains. “For example, if someone has young children, we might recommend avoiding horizontal cable railings to prevent climbing hazards. It’s about balancing functionality and aesthetics.”
Their state-of-the-art showroom has also transformed the client experience. “Now clients can see and feel their options—deck boards, railings, and more—before making a decision,” Judy adds.
Spring 2025 is bringing exciting trends to outdoor spaces, and NJ Decks and Railings is ready to deliver. Popular features include multi-level decks that integrate patios, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens. Horizontal black cable railings and pergolas with adjustable louvered roofs are also in high demand.
“People want their outdoor spaces to feel like an extension of their home,” Bruce says. “Adding features like heaters, lighting, and weather-resistant materials ensures these spaces are functional year-round.”
Community involvement is a core value for NJ Decks and Railings. Through their partnership with NADRA, they participate in the Deck for a Soldier program, donating materials and labor to build decks for veterans. “It’s a program close to our hearts,” Bruce shares. “We’ve been honored to be part of several of these projects.”
As Bruce and Judy look to the future, their vision includes passing the business down to their daughters, who are already actively involved. “It’s truly a family affair,” Judy says. “We’re excited to see how the next generation will grow the company.”
For homeowners considering spring renovations, Bruce has one key piece of advice: start early. “If you want your deck ready for summer, now is the time to call,” he advises. With a three-month backlog during peak seasons, planning ahead is essential.
From timeless designs to cutting-edge trends, NJ Decks and Railings continues to set the standard for outdoor living spaces. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy fire pit or an elegant pergola, their team is ready to bring your vision to life.

“It’s inspiring to see how people trust us to care for their homes.” - Daniel Rosenthal
DLR Plumbing & Heating LLC, a trusted name in the plumbing and heating industry, has been serving the community since 2014. Founded by Daniel Rosenthal, the company has become a reliable go-to for homeowners seeking expert solutions for their plumbing and heating needs.
“I started DLR Plumbing & Heating because I was ready to work for myself,” Rosenthal says. “With my master plumber license in hand, it felt like the right time to take the leap.”
Rosenthal’s journey into plumbing began in high school when he worked for a fire extinguisher company and learned to thread pipes. Although he initially pursued accounting at Bergen Community College, he quickly realized that plumbing was his true calling. In 1987, he became an apprentice for a friend’s plumbing company, laying the foundation for what would later become DLR Plumbing & Heating LLC.
“What I enjoy most about running this company is the flexibility to make my own hours and the opportunity to help people solve their plumbing and heating problems,” says Rosenthal. Over the years, he has watched his business evolve, largely thanks to word-of-mouth referrals from the close-knit community he serves.
Rosenthal’s commitment to customer satisfaction and quality service has earned him loyal clients and a reputation for reliability. “This community has always been supportive,” he notes. “It’s inspiring to see how people trust us to care for their homes.”
Rosenthal believes in empowering homeowners with knowledge to prevent plumbing issues. His top tips include:
1. Use strainers in kitchen and bathroom sinks and hair catchers in tub drains.
2. Avoid pouring grease or oil down the sink.
3. Know the location of your water meter.
4. Be mindful of what you flush.
5. Ensure your main sewer drain is accessible.
6. Winterize outdoor water valves by closing them in winter and reopening them in spring to avoid freezing.
7. Keep flammable items away from water heaters, boilers, and furnaces.

ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY RESTOPROS AND CARLY MAC MANUS
RestoPros of Bergen-Passaic, a woman-owned, family-run emergency services company, is dedicated to restoring homes and businesses affected by water, fire, smoke, mold, and storm damage. Founded by Janine and Vincent Priolo, the company serves Bergen, Passaic, and Rockland counties. RestoPros is known for its personalized service, deep commitment to helping customers, and its ability to navigate the stress of unexpected property damage.
Janine, who has lived in Mahwah for over 25 years, understands firsthand how overwhelming a disaster can be. Her family has faced water damage five times, each due to different causes: sump pump failures, burst water heater, and sewage backups. These experiences shaped her approach to running RestoPros. Janine’s empathy for customers stems from her own trials, helping her provide swift, professional, and compassionate service.
"I can relate to the stress that comes with these situations. For most of our customers, this is their first time dealing with an emergency like this," says Janine. "Our technicians respond with urgency and care because we understand how vulnerable people feel when their lives are upended."
What sets RestoPros apart is its dedication to customer care. Many restoration companies focus solely on completing the job, but RestoPros goes further by offering transparent communication and ensuring clients feel supported throughout the process. The company’s
tagline, “Quality that is guaranteed in your time of need,” reflects its commitment to maintaining top-quality service, even in urgent situations.
Before proceeding with any work, RestoPros carefully assesses each situation. The team works with customers to explain the steps needed and helps them navigate the process. As a mitigation company, Janine believes in educating clients about their options. RestoPros works with all insurance providers, ensuring customers are well-informed when making decisions about filing claims. They document the job from start to finish and handle the insurance submissions process for their customers.
"We don’t turn a lead into a job unless our services are necessary," says Janine. "Sometimes, the best thing we can do is reassure our clients that their property is safe. But when it’s not, we guide them through the steps of mitigation."
March brings increased risk of water damage in the region due to thawing snow and heavy rain. RestoPros is on call 24/7 to assist with emergencies like flooding, frozen pipes, or storm damage. Many calls come from homes affected by broken pipes, overflowing toilets, or sump pump failures. Returning snowbirds and families coming home from vacation often discover flooding exacerbated by mold growth from prolonged water damage.
When it comes to water damage, timing is critical. Delaying mitigation increases the extent of damage and repair costs, and can jeopardize a home’s structural integrity. Most insurance policies require homeowners to prevent further damage by acting quickly. Failing to properly mitigate could reduce coverage or even result in a denied claim.
"Swift action is crucial," says Janine. "Mold can start growing in as little as 24-48 hours, which is why we offer 24/7 emergency services. Some of the mold damage we've seen is heartbreaking, and knowing families have been living in such harmful conditions is devastating."
Mold poses serious risks, from poor air quality and musty odors to respiratory issues and structural damage. Janine advises homeowners to act quickly to prevent mold

growth, recommending they address leaks, flooding and water seepage immediately.
“Don’t just rely on fans and wet vacs after water damage,” she says. “Water seeps into walls and insulation, creating hidden damage. It’s like spilling soup on a couch and just wiping the surface, while the foam cushions underneath stay wet, leading to bigger problems down the road.”
RestoPros offers expert mold remediation services, including thorough inspections, containment, and removal. The team follows IICRC standards to ensure the safety of every property they restore.
RestoPros isn’t just a business; it’s a part of the community. The Priolos have lived in Bergen County for decades, raising their three daughters there, and take pride in supporting local businesses. They regularly host events at supply houses throughout Bergen and Passaic counties, connecting with local tradespeople and showing appreciation for the community's support.
“We love being part of this community,” says Janine. “We’re not just a name on the phone—people know us, and we’re always here to help.”
“WHETHER IT’S A FLOODED BASEMENT, A BROKEN PIPE DURING A HOLIDAY, OR A FIRE DISRUPTING DAILY LIFE, WE TEACH OUR TECHNICIANS TO RESPOND WITH URGENCY, PROFESSIONALISM, AND COMPASSION BECAUSE WE KNOW HOW IT FEELS.” - Janine Priolo, Owner
