KIDS AND PETS--TWO THINGS THAT ARE PARTICULARLY CLOSE TO MY HEART! That's our theme this month--the people and animals that make us smile each day. This issue practically writes itself because the Northland is such a family and animal-oriented area but I'm still happy to be able to steer the ship a bit! Over the years, I've written quite a bit about my two dogs, Indiana Jones and Short Round. I thought that I loved them more than any human being could. I was wrong. My daughter, Iris, thinks that she is part puppy and follows them, cuddles them, and plays with them as if they were all the same pack. And in a lot of ways, they are! It's long been a cliché that puppies and babies are the sales world's favorite tool, but there's a good reason for that. Kids and pets have all the innocence that adults have lost or forgotten. They express joy so purely that it's irresistible and we just want to join in.

The streets are safer with those two on the job. Please enjoy this issue as we wrap up the summer, sending kids off to school and languishing in the 'dog days' of summer!

A Safe Home KEEP YOUR CHILDREN AND PETS SAFE WITH CORDLESS WINDOW TREATMENTS ARTICLE RACHEL MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A ROOM ISN'T COMPLETE WITHOUT A TREATMENT FOR THE WINDOWS, FOR BOTH PRACTICAL AND AESTHETIC REASONS. When you have little ones around, whether human, feline or canine, safety comes first. Pets and babies can get tangled in cords and strangle themselves. Here are five options for keeping your loved ones safe, according to the experts at One Stop Decorating, your source for Hunter Douglas custom shades, designer draperies, and more.

Cord cleats—these handy little gadgets wind cords up so that animals and babies can't reach them. This makes a standard slat blind much safer.
Choose blinds that don't have a cord. All of the products at One Stop Decorating have the option of using a retractable cord that stores safely in the upper housing, leaving only a tassel to grab when needed. Choose blinds with internal cords. With the internal cords, homeowners simply control the height by gripping the bottom bar or handle and pulling down or pushing gently up. A wand controls the horizontal slats, allowing full control of the light.
Think outside the mini blind! Another stylish option is internal shutters. Shutters operate on hinges and attach to your existing trim. Much like external shutters, you can open and close the entire shutter like a door or raise and lower the slats using a solid bar allowing for more filtered light. An added plus? Internal shutters can match any decor and have the luxe look of built-in treatments combined with extreme durability. For larger windows and doors, consider a sliding shade like the Vertiglide line. With no cords at all, these large panels cover windows and sliding glass doors, pulling horizontally across to block light and heat with a solid panel of beautiful fabric, available in a wide array of patterns and colors.

He sits, and she climbs into his lap to comfort him. Even before he left the Army, Mike Ragsdell began showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder – specifically anger, depression, and often-paralyzing anxiety – that he attributes to many “bad experiences” from his 14 years of service. “I couldn’t bring myself to get out of the house,” he says. dogs specifically for veterans with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. “There’s no one cure-all, and a service dog is not for everyone,” says Samantha Jeffers, the group’s director of development. “But for some people, it’s the thing that works best after they’ve tried many different types of treatment.” Jeffers’ father and sister, Bella, founded the organization in 2013, combining two of their passions: rescuing dogs and giving back to veterans. Bella previously worked with another service dog organization where she learned how to train dogs to serve vets with PTSD, before moving back to the region and launching Warriors’ Best Friend with her family. The organization adopts its dogs from local animal shelters and begins by teaching

them 29 different commands—from basic skills like sitting under a desk and climbing into a car to others that address PTSD symptoms. One command, for example, teaches the dog to stand between the veteran and anyone approaching, creating a barrier and personal space that helps the person feel safer in tight environments. “For some people, this has meant being able to go to their kid’s band concert, being able to go to the grocery store on your own or not in the middle of the night when you know nobody will be there,” Jeffers says. “For every veteran we place a dog with, it has a profound but also extremely unique impact on their life.” Beyond the new commands, however, are those feelings of nonjudgment and unconditional love dogs are known for. “It doesn’t have to be a service dog for you to know what kind of loving and compassionate and intuitive beings they are,” Jeffers says. “It’s about going through all of this, feeling shame, stress and anxiety and letting out your anger, and knowing that dog accepts you unconditionally. I think that’s a huge part to the healing process.” A self-described “dog person through and through,” Ragsdell knew he found something special when he first met Nani, a Weimaraner-Great Dane mix, during one of his first encounters with Warriors’ Best Friend. “I fell in love with her right there on the spot. I couldn’t wait for class to begin.” The organization thoroughly vets all applicants to ensure they can offer a good environment for a dog, and the evaluation includes a home visit and training at the Liberty facility. The group has placed 18 dogs so far, with veterans both male and female and in various stages of life. The service is completely free for veterans, and the group covers all expenses during the training process, including food, hotel and activities. As Ragsdell can attest, the lengthy placement process is more than worth it. After bonding with Nani, he says he was able to summon the courage to embark on a bucket-list trip to Niagara Falls with his wife, and even reconnect with his son, whom he hasn’t been able to talk to or see in eight years. “Having her there was enough for me to be able to break down my wall a little bit and be able to talk to him.” He says Nani gives him the confidence and security to navigate a typical daily routine now, such as appointments or trips to the store on his own. She’s also inspired a new passion: working with other veterans at Warriors’ Best Friend. Since receiving his dog, he has trained under Bella and works directly with both the new adoptions and the veterans. “Having her got me out of that shell of despair, and it’s given me another purpose,” he says. “I used it to get me to a better point in my life, so I’m just trying to help others get to that point.” Simply put, Ragsdell says that Nani has helped him “become more human again.” Indeed, the best dogs always do. Northland Lifestyle | August 2018
THEY CALL DOGS 'MAN'S BEST FRIEND' BUT AS THESE NORTHLANDERS CAN ATTEST, THERE'S NO GENDER TO THE CAMARADERIE THAT OUR CANINE FRIENDS PROVIDE. We asked four Northlanders to introduce us to their furry friends and they willingly obliged. Meet the happiest citizens in the Northland!
meet Solo, Chewbacca, Savannah, Penny & Aria + Scot & Jessica Scot and Jessica are owned by Penny, a senior Maltese, Solo, a border collie mix, Chewbacca, a German Shepherd, Aria, a senior maltipoo, and Savannah, a miniature bull terrier. They live in Excelsior Springs.
HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR DOGS? JC: All of our dogs are rescues. Penny was adopted from MARQ. Solo came from FOPAS (Friends of the Parkville Animal Shelter). Chewie was found on the side of the road with his litter mates and mom by a rescue. We spent an entire day looking for a new family member and the next day I met Aria. She’s been my number two ever since! Savannah was rescued from the breeder auctions by our previous groomer. We watched her while she went on vacation and she became permanently ours shortly after that. She was so scared of everything because of the abuse she had endured; she wouldn’t even leave the kennel. Our groomer thought she had no quality of life but one day in daycare, Chewbacca got Savannah to play and she hasn’t stopped playing with him. He saved her life and we are so proud to be her parents. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR DOGS? JC: We love to spend time outside, whether it’s in our own backyard, at the lake, or by any body of water, on a walk, etc. WHAT IS YOUR DAY JOB? JC: Scot works at a foundry and I work out of the house. I run multiple businesses, one of which is called Love Note. I offer Rover. com services including boarding, drop-in visits, walks, and daycare, as well as pet photography. My other business is called Midwest Jess. It’s a lifestyle site, blog and Etsy shop! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A PET OWNER? JC: Rescuing is a passion of ours. Every time Savannah gains confidence or does something new-she had never barked until this year-I’m in tears. The bond we have with each of them is so special. I just feel lucky to be able to show them love every day! The Chastains are part of the pack.

FUR FRIENDS FOREVER
(CON TI N U ED)
MEET PITA + Shannon Shannon Bowman and husband Rich Bowman are owned by chihuahua Pita, 13 (pictured), baby werewolf Bilbo, 8, chiweenies Husker, 18, and Chickpea, 2. They live in Kansas City north.
HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR DOGS? SB: I’d only had big dogs and wasn’t very enthused about having a little one but after my black shepherd, Vitus, passed away, my sisters’ chihuahuas had a litter and my husband talked me into taking a peek at them. I met Pita seconds after they were born and immediately claimed her and named her. She is my best friend and I tell her that every day. All others are rescues. I got tired of every dog I’ve had dying of some form of cancer so did a lot of research on diet. We make their food now and they are in amazing health. Husker can vouch for that. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS? SB: Dogpile! I just want them all on me. Pretty much at all times. And Pita is unique in that she is an ESA (emotional support animal) so she can come with to most places even though they don’t know she’s there. She just sleeps in my (her) purse. WHAT IS YOUR DAY JOB? SB: I’m a designer for Hallmark and I also create content for and manage social media communities. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A PET OWNER? SB: People say my pets hit the lottery but I feel like they do way more for us. They make us laugh every single day even though they do the same silly things over and over. They are just magical little creatures.

Shannon and Pita have fun wherever they go.
MEET BOOTH + Kari Kari Williams is owned by Booth, 6, a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab mix. They live off of Chouteau Parkway.
HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR DOG? KW: I volunteered with Animal FAIR (Foundation for Animals In Risk) in Sedalia, Mo., while interning at the Missouri State Fair in 2013. While helping at an adoption event, I met Booth (then known as Barney). I immediately took a liking to him, but our family dog, Kandi, was suffering from bone cancer. I was concerned about bringing a new dog into my life while trying to keep her comfortable in her last weeks. I had been contemplating whether or not to adopt Barney when I went home to St. Louis for a weekend visit. Kandi, a strong and protective Great Pyrenees, was having a rough time, so my mom and I sat and talked to her about how I found this adorable dog back in Sedalia. The next morning, Kandi lost her fight -- something I've always looked at as her knowing I had another dog to take care of me. As soon as I returned to Sedalia, I began the process of adopting Barney, changed his name to Booth and brought him back to St. Louis when my internship ended. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR DOG? KW: I like to take him on long walks in the neighborhood or at Berkley Riverfront Park. He loves car rides. WHAT IS YOUR DAY JOB? Kari Williams and Booth were meant to be.
KW: I am an associate editor for VFW magazine. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A PET OWNER? KW: The unconditional love a dog brings to your life. There's nothing like being greeted with a wagging tail, obnoxiously adorable whimpers, and puppy snuggles (typically all at once) after a long day at work.

FUR FRIENDS FOREVER
(CON TI N U ED)
ESKY + Holly Holly and Brian Yocum are owned by dogs Esky (pictured), a Catahoula shepherd mix and Loki, a lab mix. They live in Liberty.
HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR DOGS? HY: From the minute we decided to have dogs, Brian and I agreed that they would only come from the pound. We wanted the dogs who were treated the worst so that we could love them the most. Esky was a rescue dog that we adopted when he was 16 weeks old from the Atchison Humane Society. Loki was adopted from Kansas City Pet Project just a few months ago. His story is a real bummer and he is a definitely a work in progress. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR DOGS? HY: We love to watch them roughhouse with one another and just smile huge goofy grins. They love Mcdonald's Cheeseburgers, pup cups, morning snuggles and evening walks. WHAT IS YOUR DAY JOB? HY: Brian works for Coca-Cola as a technician and I am a paralegal. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A PET OWNER? HY: It's just the unconditional love that these guys give me. Dogs are hilarious and brilliant and once you welcome them into your pack they are loyal forever. No one will love you like a dog will.

Your contributions will provide our Warriors and Families with the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
Most of what I do is preplanned--VIP appearances, major events, things of that nature. We are a locating tool," says Davis. Davis says that he and Victor secure NFL and MLB games, rallies, and even investigate bomb threats called into schools and businesses. He also responds to field searches or tripped alarms in businesses. Each case is assessed to make sure that the risk is worth it. One of the more enjoyable parts of Davis' job is doing demonstrations with Victor at area schools and with various organizations such as the Boy Scouts. Being a K-9 cop is a 24/7 job--in fact, Victor lives with Davis. His police car is modified to accommodate Victor as well. The back seat is removed and has been modified to be a spacious kennel for Victor. The car is climate controlled whether Davis is in it or not and he can open the door to let Victor out remotely as well. When I spoke to Davis, his car, where Victor was waiting, was a cool 58 degrees. Davis emphasizes that Victor is a working dog--his reward is searching and finding his target. He does enjoy playing ball and spinning in the police car, but as Davis says, 'If he likes playing ball more than catching bad guys, that's a problem. We keep their work the fun part."

Davis doesn't mind the fur. Davis loves meeting people when he's out with Victor but emphasizes that approaching a working animal should always be done cautiously and with communication with the owner. "We try to emphasize in demonstrations that any dog, whether it's a working dog or a personal pet, you should ask the owner first," he says. Davis and Victor enjoy making sure that the streets are safe for Kansas City residents, one case at a time.

The Little Lemonade Stand that Could WHAT'S MORE AMERICAN THAN A KID OPENING A LEMONADE STAND TO EARN SOME POCKET MONEY? That's what Gladstone resident Gina and her son, Jacob,

Club for weeks, Jacob's older sister surprised him with the stand as a birthday present. On June 28th, he set it up, armed with a plucky spirit and homemade lemonade made by mom, Gina. His intention? To earn enough money to get the air conditioning fixed in the family transportation, a minivan. And that should have been the end of the story. However, a few flies were about to enter the anointment. One of his first customers, a couple in a car that refused to get out, asked for two glasses of lemonade and after receiving the glasses (delivered to the car, no less) they demanded to see Jacob's permit for operation. Both mother and son were floored. Did they need a permit? Since when was a permit necessary for a lemonade stand in their own front yard? Flabbergasted, Gina took to Facebook to vent a little on a community group, KC North News and Info. To her surprise, her frustrations were met with overwhelming support from the group, including suggestions of contacting Country Time Lemonade for legal aid. Soon after, more concrete encouragement arrived in the form of the men and women in blue. Having heard about the incident, several government organizations including the Gladstone Fire and Rescue, Gladstone Police Department, and the Clay County Sheriff, among others, visited the stand and enjoyed Jacob’s wares. Local news agencies picked up the story and Jacob and his homemade lemonade stand quickly became an overnight success.

But what is success in the lemonade business? Well, as of this writing, Jacob had earned $68 from his .50 cups of lemonade. (Gina may or may not have been in the red from materials, but encouraging Jacob was more important than profit.) And instead of paying for the air conditioning in the van, he has donated a portion of the proceeds to a missions group at his church, Sheffield Family Life Center. "I want more kids to be able to hear about Jesus," says Jacob. Pretty selfless for an 8-year-old! And while he may not have earned enough to fix the van, God still answered his prayer. Community members gathered together and worked with a local mechanic to fix the van's AC, a blessing that the whole family can enjoy, attests Gina.

onade, that it wasn't clean. But I've also had some people be really kind," she says as a truck of regulars drives slowly by, looking for Jacob's wares. Gina says that the real profit in this entire venture has been quality time with her son. "That's why I really wanted to support him--it was never about the

As parents, it's easy to let kids do their own thing at a certain age but I want to really enjoy the time that I have with him now," she says. A mother's love and a cold glass of lemonade--what's better on a hot summer day? Jacob's stand will be open on specific days through the end of the summer and Gina says that the future is open. "Maybe it will turn into Jacob's hot chocolate stand in the winter!"

PARTING THOUGHTS
from the library of the giffords SHANON AND JUSTIN GIFFORD AND KIDS AIDEN, EWAN AND AVA: A FAMILY OF READERS
SHANNON AND JUSTIN GIFFORD KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT CHILDREN’S BOOKS. With twin boys, Aiden and Ewan, almost 4, and Ava, 1, they spend a lot of time reading with their crew. Their shelves have variety but a few of them stand out as favorites for all. Here are their top three favorites.
LET’S PLAY by Hervé Tullet This interactive book invites readers to follow along in a very hands-on way by following along with the main character, a feisty yellow dot. The fun story invites the reader to blow, push, and follow along the twisty, turny path to fun and frivolity. A must-read for the under three set.
PENGUINS LOVE COLORS by Sarah Aspinall Penguins Love Colors tells the not so black and white story of six creative and artistic penguins, named after flowers. Although their home is snowy white, they love to brighten it up for Mama Penguin with the colors of the rainbow.
LITTLE BLUE TRUCK by Alice Schertle Illustrated by Jill McElmurry If your little readers are animal lovers, Little Blue Truck is the perfect book to teach kindness. When the big Dump Truck rumbles rudely through, he doesn’t engender any good will, but the Little Blue Truck is friendly and kind. When a muddy road traps them both, readers can see how being kind reaps greater rewards than being rude, all while accompanied by fun animal sounds and illustrations. 42
