Strong Enough for a Woman

REMEMBER THAT OLD SECRET DEODORANT COMMERCIAL? The tagline was "strong enough for a man, made for a woman." At the time, it seemed fearless and edgy; now, it sounds ridiculous. Strength comes in many forms, whether you're referring to mental or physical strength, but the days of seeing women as the 'weaker sex' are thankfully coming to a close. The women in my life have always been strong. My great grandmother raised two children on her own after losing one child and a husband within a week of each other as the Great Depression was coming to a close. My grandmother raised two children after losing a husband to a building fire. My mother stayed at home with my sister and me and showed us what godly marriage looked like, then went back to college after we entered college. My sister defied the odds and became a pilot in the Air Force, while also raising two girls. I'm blessed to have example after example of what women can do when they put their minds to it. In our annual Women's Issue, we celebrate the women that have done real work-sometimes in an office; often not. We meet women that are breaking down walls

And we meet four inspiring women in our feature from all walks of life doing what they do best--loving and living to the fullest. Since having my daughters, I've thought a lot about what it means to be a woman and what lessons I'm passing on in my day to day life. I hope that they see me hustle but that they also see me rest and care for myself and others. As women, we have a lot of balls in the air at all times. Sometimes, we need to permit ourselves to take a break.

So this month, find one of the ladies in your life and tell her how much you appreciate her. Tell her that you see her strength, even when she's not flexing her muscles. Tell her that you understand the load that she carries and offer to share her burden in some small way. Express the love that she gives to you every day. PUBLISHER’S LETTER
More than Just Dance IT'S MAY, AND WE ARE CELEBRATING THE WOMEN IN OUR LIVES--THE MOTHERS, GRANDMOTHERS, SISTERS, AND FRIENDS THAT SUPPORT, ENCOURAGE, AND CHALLENGE US TO ATTAIN OUR FULLEST POTENTIAL. I've always been passionate about empowering women of all ages and backgrounds. It's kind of a family mandate! I'm very fortunate. I've always had examples of strong, courageous women, starting with my mother and grandmother. They owned and operated a Curves location, which allowed women to work out in a nurturing, female-only environment. As a young girl, I grew up in a dance studio; dance gave me an outlet for my creativity and allowed me to build my self-confidence. When I started managing their Curves location, I was eager to do the same for other women. This opened the door to own my own business, Jeron's Kardio Kick, where my class grew to include 50 plus women and even landed us on an episode of MTV's Made. And dance led me to my second family--the Chiefs Cheerleaders. In the seven years that I cheered for the Chiefs, I forged friendships that have stood the test of time. The majority of my bridesmaids were former cheerleaders. It truly was a sisterhood. We traveled together (even to Iraq!), grew together, and helped encourage the next generation of girls on the move. After hanging up my pom poms, the friendships are still strong but I couldn't let dance be absent in my life. I started teaching at Studio 10, a non-competitive, philanthropic dance studio. It's a blessing to be able to mentor young girls through the expression of dance and watch them form the friendships that will carry them through their lives. So be a cheerleader for the women in your life, this month and every month! Let her (whoever 'her' is) know how much she means to you. You'll be glad that you did!

Whiskey in a Teacup WHISKEY ISN'T JUST FOR THE GENTS ANYMORE. THROW YOUR OWN TASTING PARTY!
THERE’S A MODERN MISCONCEPTION THAT THERE’S SUCH A THING AS ‘GIRLY’ DRINKS AND ‘MANLY’ DRINKS. The world of spirits is inhabited and enjoyed by both genders. Of course, those making spirits are still predominately men, which the exception of Benay Shannon, the head distiller at Restless Spirits in North Kansas City. Shannon is the only female distiller in Missouri, and she showed me the ropes on how to taste and share the goodness of what the Scots call the ‘water of life.’ WHISKEY 101 Distilling and brewing have a lot in common. Both start with a base of grains. In the U.S., whiskey is defined as any spirit that starts with grain and is aged in contact with wood. At Restless Spirits, Shannon oversees the production of three whiskeys--the Sons of Erin, which is an imported Irish Whiskey, Gullytown, which is distilled from scratch on premise at Restless Spirits, and Stonebreaker, which is a blend of the two. Gullytown is Kansas City’s first single-malt whiskey, meaning it is produced by one distillery out of one grain bill. Shannon starts with a grain bill of 100 malted barley and double distills on a pot still. She then ages in two different barrels-one new charred oak and one bourbon cask. The barrels in which whiskey is aged directly affect the color of the spirit. The resulting whiskey is deep in

FOUR NORTHLAND WOMEN FORGE THEIR OWN PATHS WITH STRENGTH AND GRACE
Cassie Pruessner OWNER/INSTRUCTOR OF STUDIO 10 DANCE IN LIBERTY WHO MAKES UP YOUR FAMILY? Luci, age 15, and Max, age 5 WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY? I enjoy decorating, building things, and remodeling. Finding cool pieces at thrift stores and flea markets. Anything outside whether that's going fishing or taking our cars to car shows. WHAT'S YOUR HUSTLE? Studio 10 is committed to providing quality dance training in a non-competitive Christian environment. We want everyone to have the chance to shine no matter your body type or ability. It’s all about the love of dance and the love for one another. We are proud to offer our Spirit Crew dance troupe for kids with exceptionalities and special needs. It's taught by an incredible pediatric occupational therapist and a kinesiologist. Our emphasis is on giving back to the community instead of competitions. We have raised over $90,000 during our annual Dance for the Cure benefit performance benefiting Breast Cancer research. The past two years we have partnered with Hillcrest Hope at Avondale to raise over $11,000 during our Christmas performances. We have also raised several thousand for some well-deserving families within our studio. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND NIGHT? With my kids. I don’t get many nights at home so I cherish the nights I get. WHAT'S THE GREATEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED? Figure out what each kid responds to. What works for one child may not work for another. Give lots of praise. Know everyone's name. Find great teachers and role models (I got those!!). Seek wise counsel. Make your kids feel loved. Work for Him. 24

Samantha Anderson JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR WHO MAKES UP YOUR FAMILY? Currently, my household is just me and my son, James. I live near my parents and brother, which has been wonderful. We are all really close and James gets spoiled by his grandparents and uncle all the time! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY? I love anything artsy! Painting, drawing, redoing furniture, etc. Dance is my biggest passion. I used to coach a varsity dance team and teach studio classes, but now I just help in my free time with local schools and studios. WHAT'S YOUR HUSTLE? My biggest role is being a mom. James is a little over a year old and is the best part of my life! He is so much fun and just so sweet and good natured. I spend most of my time with him, working as a junior high school counselor, or spending time with family and friends. I am a people person and love having meaningful conversations (especially over a good cup of coffee!). WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND NIGHT? Although I am such a night owl, I usually spend my evenings relaxing. I have an amazing group of friends. You can usually find James and I doing brunch with them on the weekends. WHAT'S THE GREATEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED? I have learned that life does not always go as expected and sometimes life can be tough. You never know what a person is dealing with, so compassion for others can make a huge difference in someone's life. I have come to under-

Quilting is my favorite right now, but I love to digital scrapbook, embroider, tend to my summer flowers and play pickleball. I like to keep busy with a nap thrown in. WHAT’S YOUR HUSTLE? My family! Family for me is being a part of a team. Whether it is my immediate, extended, work, church, sport or school family, these people have my back and I have theirs. I am thankful I am surrounded by a great family, because I can’t do it all by myself. I am a happier person because of these people and I am thankful God put them in my life. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND NIGHT? My favorite way to spend a weekend night is to have a beautiful evening cheering on the kids at their sporting event. I love watching them compete, but I also love hanging out with the other families. It’s a fun evening and the friendships I've built over the season are long-lasting. WHAT’S THE GREATEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED? The greatest lesson I learned thus far is that everyone is someone’s child or loved one. Whether I am in a classroom, hospital, restaurant or sitting in the car line at school, I try to remember these people or little ones are a gift. Sometimes that gift is hidden under a moody teenager, a person dealing with a sickness, or a little one just trying to figure out the world. I try to protect, teach and/or treat them with the same respect that I would want my family to be treated. Some days I succeed and others I fall short, but I remind myself to take a breath and try again.

Nikki Moore RODAN + FIELDS INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT WHO MAKES UP YOUR FAMILY? I've been married to Brent for almost 16 years. Our daughter Mia is 13, our son Micah is 7, and our daughter, Marley, is forever 3 and in Heaven. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY? We love to travel, whether it's to just get away for quality time, relaxation, or to see new places! WHAT'S YOUR HUSTLE? I've been with Rodan + Fields for four years. The flexibility to put my family first is an incredible blessing with running a virtual franchise. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND NIGHT? Going on a Family Date Night. We love trying new restaurants in and around KC and spending time together! WHAT'S THE GREATEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED? Life is short, so live it wisely. We lost our daughter Marley to a cancerous brain tumor 7.5 years ago, after a two-year battle. She taught me more in her almost four short years of life than I think anyone will. Marley was the most joyful person I've known. Even when she was in a lot of pain or didn't feel well, she loved deeply and had an unspeakable joy. I promised myself that I would live each day with a joyful heart, to spend my time doing what brings me joy and purpose, to make our family the priority and not take one moment for granted.

MAMMOGRAMS: THEY STRIKE FEAR INTO THE HEART OF MANY WOMEN. They are traditionally uncomfortable, and the fear of the unknown can be daunting. But according to the American Cancer Society, all women with a reasonable risk of cancer (that means you) should get a yearly mammogram starting at age 40. So when the time comes, choose someone that will make this essential test as comfortable as possible. Imaging For Women has been that practice for hundreds of women in the 20 years that it has been open. At their location on 630 NW Englewood Road, they specialize in 3D mammograms,

more compression you do the clearer the picture will be, and less radiation will be used. And 90% of women end up maxing out the compression. Women are tough, and they will give themselves the best exam possible if you give them that opportunity,” says Voeltz. Once that compression is done, Imaging For Women is committed to getting results fast. Instead of waiting around for weeks to get results, the mammogram is read immediately, and if there is additional work to be done, it’s either completed that day or scheduled for a good time soon. Their commitment to patient comfort extends to patient peace of mind. Zupon says that this dedication to patient care is what truly sets Imaging for Women apart. By creating a soothing atmosphere and placing a high priority on their patients’ time and understanding of the procedures, they ensure that a woman is at ease throughout her experience. “Anxiety is a big part of why women don’t come back for mammograms. They remember the old way of doing it and they expect it to hurt, so they avoid it. We’ve had many women try the 3D imaging and tell us how much better of an experience it was. They are no longer afraid to get their yearly checkup,” says Zupon. Imaging For Women is committed to women’s health and catching cancer early. With years of experience under their belts but the foresight to utilize new technologies, they are taking the fear out of preventative screenings. For more information, visit Imaging4Women.com.

“I LOVE YOU.” That was the last thing that Liberty native and William Jewell graduate Shanna Adamic heard in her right ear--words of love from her husband as she went into brain surgery in January 2018. The surgery was the culmination of a series of divine events that led to her discovery of an acoustic neuroma, a rare brain tumor that was growing on her hearing nerve and pressing into her brain stem. Adamic, a fundraiser and senior operations director for the First Hand Foundation, Cerner’s non-profit, knows the importance of healthcare. Her work with the First Hand Foundation helps to provide healthcare for those that can’t afford it around the globe. After seeing an interview with Maria Menounos where she described her symptoms of an acoustic neuroma, Adamic consulted her doctor. He confirmed her suspicions. As a former NFL cheerleader and an event planner for the First Hand Foundation, Adamic had always led a very active lifestyle. With her new diagnosis, she faced the possibility of only walking with a walker and having permanent hearing loss. Her initial care plan involved surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, then undergoing radiation to shrink what was left, with the option of a second surgery. Adamic reached out to Menounos. She recommended a second opinion. That second opinion came from an old college friend after seeing Adamic post about her condition on Instagram. Dr. Amy Pittman invited Adamic to Loyola Medical where she was a facial nerve

reconstruction surgeon. Two of her partnered doctors had completed more acoustic neuroma surgeries than anyone in the country. They wanted to see her in Chicago. Dr.John Leonetti and Dr. Doug Anderson had a different plan--a big surgery with a big outcome. They planned to go in and remove all of the tumor in one surgery, if possible. They warned her of the possible outcomes--loss of hearing, loss of equilibrium, and potential facial paralysis. But even with the potential side effects, there was no alternative. Adamic would go to Chicago. Adamic, who had always been very career-driven was suddenly brought face to face with what’s important in life--people. As a

Chicago who offered to let Adamic and her husband stay in her home for the two-week observed recovery time to the people who offered to care for her children back home. Their support fortified her for the journey ahead. As she left for the surgery, her daughter asked if she was coming home. Amazingly, Adamic could smile and say yes to her daughter. “That was the hardest moment of all of this. You look at these kids, and you know that you’ll go to hell and back to be there for them,” says Adamic. The surgery went well, with 98% of the tumor removed. The remaining 2% was deemed benign, with extremely low chances of it growing back. The next steps were literally that--steps. This former cheerleader and dancer had to get her balance back. She was told not to expect much. 36

But walk she did, out of the hospital. Tired of waiting for a wheelchair, Adamic left the hospital under her own power, using a walker. This set the tone for the rest of her recovery, which has been nothing short of miraculous. “There was a moment when I had to decide who I was going to be. Was I going to be the person that people looked at and said ‘Remember Shanna before the surgery and look at her now?’ I had to choose to be optimistic and decide that I was going to come out on the other side of this with flying colors,” says Adamic. While her optimism never wavered, her smile did. After waking up from surgery, she found that she couldn’t close both eyes and she had facial paralysis on her right side. She put up a Post It note on her

That resilience defines Adamic. Since returning to work and regaining her smile, she’s also completed a dance class with some of her friends from her Chiefs cheerleading days, something she was told that she would likely never do again. After completing a class at Dance Fit Flow, she came away beaming. “I’ve still got it!” she says. And she does. She has her family and her life, the two most precious gifts. She also has the knowledge of all the people that were willing to support and uplift her. As she goes forward in her life, she is dedicated to reflecting that care onto others with every smile she has.

A Good Pair of Shoes! Ok, spoiler alert, I sell good shoes. But I wouldn't do it if I didn't believe in what we do at The Running Well Store! I have seen clients come in with plantar fasciitis, back pain, knee pain – you name it. I have watched them get fitted for a good pair of shoes and walk out excited with the pain-free possibilities ahead. As a runner, hiker, and active lifestyle enthusiast, I put my shoes to the test.
