Remembering Bill, The Pizza Cutter

The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best.

For me, the holiday activity I remember best is picking up our pizza at Mazzone’s Italian Bakery on Clark Avenue in Cleveland on Christmas Eve. It was no small feat. Each year we’d meticulously plan a drop-off strategy because their parking lot only held three cars. We’d take our place at the end of the line (typically outside) and wait up to two hours while the ladies behind the counter sifted through three million little pieces of hand-written paper to find the orders people placed weeks ago.

Also known as Sicilian pizza, Mazzone’s pizza was THICK, the size of a large cookie sheet and cut into rectangular pieces. The sauce was the showcase—no meat—just sauce and cheese and…. you ate it cold. It was too large to store in the fridge so we stored it in the garage or on the patio.

Four years ago, we picked up our pizza and were handed a knife that was engraved with the words, “Bill the Pizza Cutter." And that all customers received uncut pizzas because Bill (the pizza cutter) had passed away. We were heartbroken, both for Bill, and for the fact that we had to cut our own pizza. Sadly, the next year, Mazzone’s closed after 80 years in business. Times change. Our traditions change and we adapt to creating and holding new traditions that are meaningful to us.

This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping more fulfilling. In addition, we’ve highlighted some ways our community is giving back to both people and pets. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy and love.

Happy Holidays!

HOLIDAY SPENDING Made Smart

HOW TO MAKE “THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR” GENTLER ON YOUR WALLET

The holiday season can be a fun time filled with family get-togethers, festive decorations, cookie baking and other merry moments.

It can also be a spendy time of year, especially when it comes to gift-giving.

If you are hoping to make this holiday season more budget-friendly than in years past, the following tips may help:

TIP 1:

HAVE AN HONEST TALK WITH YOUR KIDS

Your kids’ wish lists might be longer than the Declaration of Independence, but take heed. According to Whyzz, research has found that what kids really want for the holidays are enjoyable family traditions, relaxing days with people who love them, and a few gifts.

Interestingly, research also shows that kids have pretty reasonable expectations on how many gifts they will receive, as well as how much money will be spent on them.

With this in mind, before you start your holiday shopping, Whyzz advises sitting down with your kids and letting them know how much you have to spend on gifts this year. Be upfront about what they can expect, and encourage each child to suggest one larger gift or perhaps a few smaller ones that will fit into your budget.

TIP 2:

FIND CREATIVE WAYS TO TRIM THE HOLIDAY BUDGET

Buying presents for lots of friends and family members can really add up. To trim back your spending, Nerd Wallet suggests that people draw names to help lower the number of gifts you’ll purchase, and/or proposing a budget-friendly price limit for each person.

Other ways to pare back your holiday spending include asking family to come visit this season, rather than you booking costly airline trips and paying for hotels; or choosing just one seasonal play, performance, carnival or other event to attend, rather than several.

You can also challenge your kids to come up with ideas for inexpensive and fun things to do as a family. You might

find that your child’s suggestion of filling travel mugs with cocoa and heading out in the car to admire the many amazing holiday displays is a fun and memorable experience.

TIP 3:

ENCOURAGE GIFT RECIPIENTS TO TELL YOU WHAT THEY TRULY WANT OR NEED

Another way to make your holiday spending smarter than ever this year is to purchase gifts that your loved ones truly need. At times, this might involve thinking outside of the gift box a bit, and that’s okay.

Ask each person on your list for ideas, and let them know it’s okay if it’s not a “traditional” gift. For instance, maybe your aunt would love it if you paid for her Netflix subscription for a couple of months, your college-aged nephew could really use a gift card to Amazon or Target, and your grandpa would really be thrilled if you took him out to lunch once the busy holidays are over.

TIP 4:

TRY TO AVOID IMPULSE SPENDING ON “DEALS”

Yes, Black Friday typically features amazing deals on a wide selection of items. But unless you are really sure that one of your gift recipients wants that mega-marked-down item, try to resist succumbing to the temptation of these sales. Buying something just because it’s a terrific price is a sure way to bust that newly-trimmed down budget, and you might end up with gifts that were a great price, but not really useful to anyone on your list.

Here’s to a jolly holiday season filled with special moments, and smart spending!

Shop Small, Gift Big

'Tis the season for gift-giving! Research shows that gift-giving—be it through service, time or actual gifts—can boost the gift-giver's mental and physical health. That smile that spreads across your face as you watch your partner unwrap the present you thoughtfully picked out for them? That releases "feel good" chemicals including serotonin (commonly called the "happy hormone"), dopamine (which gives you a sense of pleasure), and oxytocin, which creates a sense of connection with others.

Aside from the fact that picking out a special gift for a loved one feels awesome, it's fun to do. And when you're shopping small instead of scrolling

through the pages of Amazon, we can make a pretty safe bet that you—and the person you're gifting—are going to love and appreciate the gesture tenfold.

We perused some of our favorite local spots for gifts, and they did not disappoint. Here are a handful of our recommendations from beloved main street stores including Fritzy Jacobs, Vernacular and AR Workshop, as well as The Shops at Worthington gift haven staple, Blissful Trends.

For those who are new to the area (or who are in need of a reminder), here is a bit about each boutique as you're pondering what to get your mother-in-law, always-there-for-you neighbor, or fashion-forward friend.

Fritzy Jacobs, which sits on the corner of High Street and New England Avenue, is home to an eclectic mix of apothecary, frames, kids' apparel, rugs and pillows and more. They even have a local artisan who makes custom lamp shades for the store.

A few steps down from Fritzy Jacobs is AR Workshop, half boutique, half art studio. If you're looking to give the gift of experience this season (always a wise choice), you can choose from hand-knitting classes to wood and canvas workshops and more.

Right beside AR Workshop is Vernacular, a Columbus fashion mainstay for women's apparel, accessories, jewelry and gifts, including modern home decor items, trendy clothing and chic kitchen and entertaining supplies.

Still on High Street, just a short car ride down the road, lies Blissful Trends, inside of The Shops at Worthington. This lively boutique houses cheeky accent pillows, colorful accessories, unique trinkets and so much more.

May you find the perfect gift that tells your loved ones just how special they are.

CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH UP ACADEMY'S UNIQUE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

ARTICLE BY BRICE BUNNER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIIA CHYSTIAKOVA
Homemade dog treats made by UP staff
I love when we have story time, learn about “gentle play” and have a nice walk with our instructors.

Hi! I’m Mac. I like long walks in the park, cuddling up by the fire and chasing squirrels. I’m 3 foot 2 (on my hind legs) and have a shiny, yellow coat that keeps the rain off me. I’m so excited because I just spent the day at my favorite place, Unlimited Pawsibilities Canine Enrichment Academy.

It all gets started as soon as I’m dropped off. I get to mingle a bit with my classmates and say "hi" to my  enrichment specialists. Then, at around 9 a.m., I’m free to explore the smells found in the folds of my snuffle mat, run around the big play set, solve puzzles—and I can even try for a personal best along the slat run. I beat that Pomeranian yesterday and that made me so happy.

My Specialist, Alexis, sets up activities for us to complete each day and in-between those, I never have to worry about accidents since we get multiple bathroom breaks throughout the day.

For lunch, we settle down a bit and I take a nap after I eat. I love when we have story time, learn about "gentle play" and have a nice walk with our instructors. I’m learning that obeying commands leads to some really great rewards (like a nice cold Kong I get for being a good boy).

And the best part is my family loves how much better behaved I am at home (I don’t tear up the sofa when I get anxious anymore!) In fact, before UP, I used to be too anxious to even go out with my owner. But with their enrichment program and unique coaching, I’m a lot more confident. Now, my owner and I can even go for those long walks I love

so much. You might see us walking to get a pup cup from a local shop and me chilling while we enjoy the farmer's market downtown.

Mac is just one of the students at Unlimited Pawsibilities Canine Enrichment Academy. This is not simply a kennel with daycare classes. UP Academy offers a full enrichment curriculum for your pup, as well as a customized intervention program curriculum plan for students who might require a more intense behavioral concern.

Approaching enrichment with a dedication to whole dog care, UP has developed its curriculum based upon the scientific research that ensures the Mind, Body and Spirit of your dog is nurtured to promote optimal health. Each instructor is devoted to giving your furry baby the care they need to be better behaved at home and in public.

Andrea, the Client Success Director at UP, suggests that when you enroll your dog, you start with a relaxed mindset without a big to-do when dropping off. "Come in calm,” Andrea says. “Let us take your dog, and walk out confidently.”

UP also offers themed activity days, doggie birthday parties, grooming and an all-inclusive resort for overnight stays. You can learn more at unlimitedpawsibilitiesinc.com or receive a personal guided tour by the owner, Jodi Liscio, by calling 614-423-6164 or scheduling online.

The facility is located at 3570 Fishinger Blvd., Hilliard, OH. With enrollment in their premium program packages, they offer door-to-door concierge transport services to clients.

FIREPLACE CLEANING TIPS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON

Sweep up those ashes!

It’s the coziest time of the year. Time to grab a cup of hot cocoa, curl up next to the fireplace with a chunkyknit blanket and get lost in a good book. But before you start roasting chestnuts over the fire this December, take a second to ponder this: When was the last time you cleaned your fireplace?

Fireplace and chimney maintenance may not be the most festive topic this holiday season, but it’s an important one. Whether your stockings are hung over a wood-burning fireplace or a gas-burning one, the flue needs to be free and clear of debris to function properly and keep excess CO2 out of your home. It’s also vital to clean your fireplace once a year to prevent fire safety concerns.

This is due to the buildup of creosote: a tar-like substance that’s produced when wood burns and coats the inside of chimneys. Whempys Chimney Services Accounts Manager, Rachel Reed, warns that creosote is “very combustible,” which is why it is important to keep up on yearly inspections and cleanings to limit buildup and help prevent chimney fires. Whempys suggests completing this either before you burn your first yule log this year, or after you’re done burning for the season.

According to Reed, the best time of year to check the health of your hearth is actually in the spring. She says, “The benefit of cleaning and inspection in the spring is [being] able to get any of the ash and soot out before the weather gets wet and warm. This can cause a smokey smell to permeate from the chimney, especially if you have closed the flue.”

For homeowners who have a gas burning fireplace, maintenance is the same as a wood-burning one. “It may

seem like a gas fireplace does not need to be cleaned or inspected, but homeowners should be aware that gas fireplaces still produce substances that need to properly vent through their chimney,” explains Reed.

Both types of fireplaces should be inspected and cleaned regularly. While homeowners are preparing their holiday festivities by the fire, Whempys will clean chimneys from the bottom up. “This gives us the opportunity to control how quickly soot and debris come down the flue,” Reed says. “We use a specially vented vacuum to remove everything as it comes down.” Whempys enjoys taking care of this for homeowners so they don’t have to, and they can fully enjoy the holidays with a freshly-cleaned fireplace.

Sometimes, chimney cleaning can lead to interesting surprises, too. Whempys has come across some funny finds while on the job. “Fireplaces are apparently great places to hide things,” Reed mentions. “We’ve seen our fair share of…interesting things often hidden by homeowners long ago,” recalling  her favorite on-thejob story: When Whempys owner Dave Reed found and saved a family of baby raccoons.

Other than the potential discovery of a cute, furry, (and perhaps a little sooty) family, yearly fireplace maintenance goes a long way to keep homeowners happy and healthy for the holidays. It helps them save money long-term by fixing small issues before they lead to larger ones, and it allows them to snuggle up next to the fire with some peace of mind.

You can contact Whempys for a professional cleaning and inspection by calling their direct line at 614888-6670 or visiting their website, whempys.com

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
