Sixty Hearts KRISTINE THOMPSON STEPS INTO THE ROLE OF HEART BALL CHAIR

FOR 16 YEARS, KRISTINE THOMPSON HAS BEEN A CHAMPION FOR HEART HEALTH AS A MEMBER OF THE PHOENIX HEART BALL COMMITTEE. This year, as the ball celebrates its 60th year of raising funds to advance the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association, she embraces her newest role: chair of the Phoenix Heart Ball. For Kristine, the mission of raising funds for the Heart Ball Campaign and celebrating the life-saving work at the Heart Ball is a mission that’s, well, close to her own heart. “Our whole family is affected by heart disease,” she explains. “My mom’s dad had one of the earliest triple bypasses here in Phoenix, from Dr. Diethrich. I was maybe 6 when that surgery took place. So, from a young age, I was aware of heart disease. And, the older I get, the more important it becomes to me.” In fact, heart disease and stroke have now affected other members of Kristine’s family—including her husband, who was unexpectedly diagnosed when he was just 40—as well as numerous friends.

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2019

“One of my themes this year is ‘Know Your Numbers’ because heart disease doesn’t look the same for everyone. People often have an image of what a person struggling with heart disease looks like, but you don’t have to be overweight and you don’t have to be a smoker. I think that’s what’s so surprising to me as I get older.” Kristine hopes that by encouraging people to know their numbers—such as cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and blood sugar— they can live their best and healthiest life by getting ahead of heart disease and stroke. While some aspects of heart disease are genetic, for most, that is not the case. “Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable, so there’s a lot people can do to get ahead of it so it doesn’t happen. Once you have it, the only thing you can do is manage it,” Kristine says. She encourages people to watch their diet and to exercise, in addition to staying on top of their numbers. When Kristine isn’t busy planning the Heart Ball (her mom, Sandy Magruder, is also a longtime member of the committee and a past chair!) and its related events, she loves to both cook and entertain. She also enjoys skiing and playing the drums.

The Phoenix Heart Ball is Nov. 23, 2019, at The Phoenician.

The New, Painless Body Contouring Option BODCOR’S 4D LASER THERAPY IS DISRUPTING AN INDUSTRY

AT FIRST, JASON VALASEK WAS A SKEPTIC. Although the initial technology Bodcor uses has been extremely popular in other areas of the world for the last 10 years, he was still hesitant to try what is touted as a non-surgical body contouring option, not believing it could really work as well as the hype. And then he tried it. “What brought me into this business was when I used [the product] on myself and saw that it actually worked. That was my aha moment,” he says. An aha moment it definitely was. He was so encouraged by the results the technology provided and its potential that he reached out to the parent company to see about bringing it to the United States. “The idea for Bodcor started in April 2018. It opened January 1, 2019,” Jason says. Bodcor’s FDA-approved technology, 4D laser fat loss system is the latest in fat reduction technology. It helps patients achieve inch loss and body contouring without any pain or needles. Plus, there is no downtime. “Our device uses infrared heat and red light therapy to deplete fat cells,” Jason says. “The additional benefit is that the red light therapy tightens and tones the skin of the treated areas.” The device is the only one of its kind that is available as a non-medical device. It uses 4D laser technology, which means that it incorporates four different wavelengths in order for the laser to penetrate deeper levels of fat within the body. According to Jason, the clinically proven technology does specifically well at targeting stubborn fat. Clients are flocking to Bodcor as a non-surgical treatment alternative for the neck, chin and jawline area; flabby arms; flanks; the back of legs; back fat; love handles; the abdomen area; and more.

BODY CONTOURING

(CON TI N U ED)

The process is simple—to optimize the results of the treatment, clients utilize vibration therapy (standing on a vibration plate) both at the beginning and end of the session in order to stimulate the lymphatic system. The laser therapy is then conducted while the patient relaxes. Everything takes under an hour, and there are no limitations or special instructions upon leaving. The popularity of Bodcor’s treatment has driven the opening of nine locations around the Valley within the first few months of Bodcor’s launch, and Jason shares that there is a growth plan of at least 10 more locations within Arizona before the company will move into new states. The long-term growth plan calls for between 60 and 100 loca-

tions within the United States in the next 12 to 24 months. Treatment plans are offered in a series of 10 treatments, with the recommended schedule being one session every three days. Changes to a body’s shape are often seen within five to six treatments, and results are enhanced by a healthy diet and exercise. Upon completion of the plan, clients qualify for a monthly membership, and for that, one to two treatments a week is ideal.

Howie Mandel TALKING HEART HEALTH, TELEVISION AND VISITING THE VALLEY

ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

26

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2019

HOWIE MANDEL HAS VISITED THE VALLEY MANY TIMES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. The popular comedian, actor and television host was the headliner at the Arizona State Fair for many years and performed at Celebrity Theatre, amongst others, but he and his wife enjoy visiting spas in town, as well. “We love it here,” he says. Recently, he was in the Valley for another reason—to talk about something else that is near and dear to his heart. Literally. Howie is part of the Take Cholesterol to Heart campaign (TakeCholesteroltoHeart.com), and he’s on a mission to educate others about cholesterol. His personal journey with high cholesterol began 30 years ago. “The truth is, I just went to the doctor for a general check-up like I do yearly, and part of the general check-up was taking blood. When the test results came back, he said, ‘You have really high cholesterol’ and he wanted to put me on a statin.” Howie initially agreed, but then didn’t follow the doctor’s orders. “I took my statin. I didn’t like my statin. So, I stopped taking my statin,” he says. He didn’t like how the statin made him feel, so he simply stopped taking it. “I recently learned that many people—at least 50%—stop taking their statins [within] a year of starting them,” he says. “That’s why I’m so glad to be involved in Take Cholesterol to Heart, a campaign that encourages people with high cholesterol to talk more openly with their doctor and find the statin that works best for them.” When Howie’s check-up the following year showed that his cholesterol was “through the roof,” he confessed that he’d stopped taking his statin—and had done so without consulting his doctor. It was then when he learned there were different statins to try, and that not all would affect him the same way.

HOWIE MANDEL

(CON TI N U ED)

Today, Howie continues with the active and healthy lifestyle he’s always followed, and has been faithfully taking a statin. “I want to tell people how important heart health and cholesterol is. … [And] how prevalent this issue is. It’s [a leading] cause of heart disease and stroke, which is the No. 1 killer in our society.” Howie stresses that even if you don’t feel like anything is wrong, it still could be. “There is more than one statin. Cholesterol is a killer because you don’t feel it and because you don’t see it. It’s a ticking time bomb. I didn’t know that,” he says. When he’s not talking cholesterol, Howie’s calendar is filled with family time, and of course, with numerous shows. “My panacea in life is being busy and being distracted, and I’m one of the luckiest guys in the world—having that seat at the table at America’s Got Talent and watching people’s hopes and dreams come true, having that stage at Deal or No Deal and watching people hopefully leave better off than when they came in, having fun and working with my son at Nat Geo Wild on Animals Doing Things and laughing all day long at funny animal clips and trying to add to that, or standing on stage and recording my first comedy special in 20 years.” He also performs approximately 200 live shows a year. Thankfully, his cholesterol numbers are now fine. “I’m on a statin, and I feel perfect,” he pauses and laughs. “I think I am perfect, but that’s up to you and the readers to decide!”

DID YOU KNOW? + High cholesterol, a major risk factor for heart disease, affects more than 100 million Americans.

“Legacy took me 10 years to write because of being sick. I thought I had writer’s block, but it turns out I had a symptom called brain fog. As soon as they started treatment on me, the fog lifted and I was able to finish my first screenplay,” she says. “It was like I got my brain back.” Danielle is particularly proud of winning the grand prize for best feature screenplay through The Great American Script Contest, which is attached to the Chicago Independent Film Festival. She’s also excited to be an Inroads Screenwriting Fellowship honoree and a top 10 finalist for the Stage 32 Fantasy and Sci-Fi Screenwriting Contest. “The fastest way to make a career for yourself as a screenwriter is by winning film festivals. Normally fantasy doesn’t win, and normally you don’t win this much,” she says. Her second screenplay, Luana, was written during her year of chemotherapy, which she will need to receive again at the three- and seven-year marks. The word behind the screenplay is “rebirth” because that’s how she felt going through chemo. “I was being born again,” Danielle says. “Obstacles are put in your path. They’re there to build you into the person you’re meant to be. If I hadn’t suffered the way I had, I wouldn’t have needed the escape to create Legacy.” The fog is still lifted, and Danielle is almost finished writing the first draft of a new screenplay. “I’m taking one of my favorite fairytales and bringing it back to how fairytales were originally. It’s darker than anything I’ve ever written. It’ll be interesting to see how people respond to it.”

LOCAL CHEF MAKES OVERNIGHT FISHING TRIP TO ALASKA TO CATCH OCEAN 44’S NIGHTLY SPECIAL

First Fish IT WAS 7 A.M. ON A RECENT THURSDAY MORNING WHEN

MARC LUPINO, CHIEF EXECUTIVE CHEF AT THE VALLEY’S

OCEAN 44, FOUND HIMSELF ON A SMALL PRIVATE COMPANY JET HEADED FROM PHOENIX TO CORDOVA, ALASKA. The plan seemed relatively straightforward: Land in Alaska after a quick stop in Seattle to pick up an executive from Pacific Seafood, the company which owned the jet and which had set up this opportunity, fish for a few hours, pack the catch, then board the plane and head back to Scottsdale to prepare and serve the fresh-caught fish for that night’s dinner.

34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2019

Only, the trip didn’t go exactly as planned. First Fish is a big deal in Cordova, a tiny town with one hotel, one restaurant, one bar, and no roads in or out. The famous adjacent Copper River, known for its highly prized wild salmon, is open for only a brief fishing season—often just 12 weeks long, with two days a week allowed for fishing. The fishing days are controlled by environmentalists, who only allow fishing if enough fish have gone up the river. Thus, First Fish—the first day of fishing for the season—is a highly anticipated event. And, this was an extremely special opportunity for Marc. But when he landed in Alaska, there was bad news: The boat they were going out on was no longer available—nor were any other boats. So Marc settled himself into the only bar in town and mulled his next steps. “That’s when this little Vietnamese man sat down next to me,” he says. The man owned a commercial boat, and so Marc offered him a deal—he’d pay him money to be on the boat, he’d work all day, and he’d pay for his fish, too. It was a deal. At 2:30 a.m. the next morning, Marc went to the dock. “[The man] looked at me like, ‘You showed up? I can’t believe it!’” he says. But Marc, who had no experience, was ready. “We went out at 3 in the morning, and we didn’t come back until about 11 or midnight,” he says. “It was crazy and one of the most interesting things I had ever gotten myself to do. I just knew I wanted that fish!” That day, Marc became a commercial fisherman, working all day, and yes, catching his prized fish. “I was able to bring back two king salmons since I had a 60-pound weight limit for the plane. Each fish was about 25 pounds, plus the ice. “I’m glad it worked out the way it did because it was a huge challenge for me personally. It was very interesting to see how [commercial fishing] really works. It was real.” And by the end of the day, Marc and the man were friends. When they returned to land, Marc then watched the fish be packed at the small packing facility there, boarded a 7 a.m. flight out of Cordova, made two stops, and then finally landed at 3:50 p.m. that Friday in Scottsdale.

“I brought the fish over to the restaurant, butchered it, and that was our feature for the day,” he says. He prepared the fish simply. “I put some house fish seasoning on it, seared it on a flattop, put a little wine and butter in the pan with it, cooked it in the oven, and plated it with grilled lemon. The fish just really stood out on its own.” In all, there were 52 10-ounce portions available. “Ocean 44 takes the freshness of its seafood very seriously,” he says. Indeed it does.
